The destruction of a dam on the Irpin River in 2022 resulted in the flooding of over 2,500 hectares of floodplain, representing one of the first documented environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine. This study provides an assessment of early changes in three biotic components – macrophytes, fish, and birds – within the newly formed waterbody. The findings indicate a shift in the ecosystem toward a lentic regime, accompanied by transformations in species composition and habitat structure. A decline in macrophyte species richness, an increase in ichthyofaunal diversity, and the dominance of hydrophilic bird species were observed. In total, 12 species listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, 5 species included in the European Red List (as Vulnerable or Near Threatened), and 83 taxa protected under the Bern Convention were recorded, underscoring the high conservation value of the study area. These results provide a valuable baseline for assessing how wetland ecosystems respond to military impacts and enable meaningful international comparisons of the impacts of armed conflict on wetlands, particularly in the context of conserving transboundary migratory species.

"Red Data Book of Ukraine. Vegetable Kingdom" Afterword The results of the third edition of the Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009) are summed up. This edition includes 826 species (611 vascular plants, 46 bryophytes, 60 algae, 52 lichens, 57 mosses). The approaches to species selection and category comparing assessment, which are accepted by Ukraine and IUCN, are highlighted as well as species distribution according to phytoceonological and political regions. Approaches to the selection of species for inclusion in the lists of the Red Data Books of Ukraine and Poland are analyzed.

It is substantiated that the territory of the NNP «Pivnichne Podillia» is unique in the phytososological meaning of the ecosystem — three species of plants (Cochlearia pyrenaica DC., Sesleria caerulea (L.) Ard., Spiranthes amoena (M. Bieb.) Spreng.) occur in Ukraine only here, the location of which was confirmed by us in 2017 new NNP ecotops of the Red Data Book of Ukraine were marked: Utricularia intermedia Hayne, U. minor L., Salix lapponum L., Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soo, D. majalis (Rchb.) PF Hunt et Summerhayes. A part of the species of the Red Data Book of Ukraine, found in literary sources, have been identified. The list of regionally rare plants of Lviv region is analyzed. There are 10 phytogroups of the Green Data Book of Ukraine. Rare wetland types of natural environments of the Bern Convention are presented. After further research, we recommend the inclusion of the following vulnerable, rare, endangered species of flora of wetlands and peatlands of the North Podillia: Drosera rotundifolia L., Lathyrus palustris L., Ophioglossum vulgatum L., Veratrum lobelianum Bernh., Lotus uliginosus L., Eriophorum gracile Koch, Parnassia palustris L., Triglochin palustre L., Blysmus compressus (L.) Panz. ex Link., to the fourth edition of the Red Data Book of Ukraine.

Introduction. Traditionally, lands transformed by mining operations are considered destabilized and environmentally hazardous. However, the experience of natural researches of Kryvyi Rih Basin showed that over time post-mining territories (those that emerged after the completion of mineral extraction and enrichment) become the arena of formation of secondary ecosystems, the development of which is the subject to the general natural laws. There, within vegetation communities, populations of rare plants, which are included into “conservation lists” of various ranks, are forming.Aim. To define the sozophyte fraction of phytobiota of post-mining territories of Kryvyi Rih Basin and to carry out ecological-coenotical analysis of this fraction.Methods. A list of the sozophytes was completed basing on multiple surveys of quarry-dump complexes of Kryvyi Rih Area. In its formation, the materials of the Red Book of Dnipropetrovsk Region, the Red Book of Ukraine, the latest editions of the World and European Red Lists have been analyzed. The analysis of the eco- and coenomorphic structure of the composition of the sozophytes was carried out using the monographic work by V.V. Tarasov, as well as the characteristics of species from the Red Book of Dnipropetrovsk Region. Determination of life strategies of species was carried out in accordance with the concept of L.G. Ramenskiy – J. Grime.Results. We found that 27 species of flora of anthropogenic ecotopes included in the World and European Red Lists are widespread in the region. There is no threat to the existence of such species today, and it does not make sense to include them in the conservation lists. Instead, the list of sozophytes included 40 species from the “red books” of the lower ranks: one belongs to Ascomycota, one to Marchantiophyta, 4 – to Polypodiophyta and 34 to Magnoliophyta (19 families, 27 genera). The composition of the sozophyte fraction of phytobiota of waste man-made objects is dominated by patients (S-strategists), steppants and petrophytes, xerophytes, heliophytes, mesotrophs.Conclusion. Post-mining territories undergo much less anthropogenic interference than the remnants of natural ecosystems of Kryvyi Rih Area, so they are refugia of rare phytodiversity in the technogenically transformed region. Of the sozophyte fraction, 32 species settled here spontaneously, 4 – naturalized after introduction during reclamation experiments, and 4 more – established by both ways.Key words: sozophytes; phytobiota; post-mining landscapes; ecological-coenotical analysis; refugia; Kryvyi Rih Area.

The article presents a comprehensive characterization of the flora the valley-terrace landscapes of the Ukrainian steppe zone based on the results of systematic, geographical, biological and ecomorphic analyses. It has been established that the flora of valley-terrace landscapes is represented by 1315 species of vascular plants belonging to 508 genera, 120 families, 6 classes and 5 divisions. The spectrum of the leading families of valley-terrace landscapes of the steppe zone of Ukraine basically coincides with a similar spectrum leading families of vascular plants of southeastern Ukraine, the flora of the Right Bank steppe and of the Dniester-Tiligul interfluve. The only difference is in the Cyperaceae family, which ranks fifth in the spectrum of leading families, while in the above floras this family is on the 9th–10th places. The flora is dominated by hemicryptophytes among climamorphs, perennials among biomorphs, heliophytes among heliomorphs, mesotrophs among trophomorphs, mesophytes among hygromorphs, and pratants among cenomorphs. According to the cenomorphic analysis of the flora, it was found that 30.2% (397 species) have a ruderal component (found in ruderal, semi-natural habitats). The adventitious flora is represented by 223 species of vascular plants (16.96%), including 6 invasive species. From the flora of valley-terrace landscapes of the Ukrainian steppe zone, 8 species of vascular plants are included in the World Red List (WRL), and 14 species are included in the European Red List. The Red Data Book of Ukraine in different categories: (1) – 1 species, (2) – 25 species, (3) – 9 species, (4) – 7 species. The Red List of Dnipropetrovska oblast includes 42 species of the studied flora. The analysis of species occurrence categories revealed that 88 species are very rare, 495 species are rare, 286 species are sporadic, 368 species are frequent, and 78 species are very frequent. The analysis of landscape transformation according to the hemerobia system shows that mesohemorrhizal species predominate in the flora, which indicates an average level of transformation of valley-terrace landscapes of the Ukrainian steppe zone.

Based on the results of field research, inventory of CWU herbarium collections and study of scientific sources it was carried out the sozological assessment of rare plant species as a part of the higher aquatic flora of the Kharkiv region according to generally accepted criteria of rarity. It has been found that four species (Salvinia natans (L.) All., Trapa natans L., Utricularia intermedia Hayne, U. minor L.) are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, the first two of which are in the Annex I of Bern Convention. The European Red List of Vascular Plants includes three species (Potamogeton acutifolius Link, P. rutilus Wolfg., Trapa natans), which have the conservation status “Near Threatened”. 27 plant species are in the Red List of Aquatic Macrophytes of Ukraine and 22 species are included in the Regional Red List of the Kharkiv region. It has been revealed that populations of six rare species (Batrachium aquatile (L.) Dumort., Potamogeton obtusifolius Mert. et Koch, P. rutilus Wolfg., Scirpus triqueter L., Vallisneria spiralis L., Wolffia arrhiza (L.) Horkel ex Wimmer) are on the border of the range. By the uniqueness for the region, one species (Salvinia natans) is considered as rare for Europe, 26 species are rare at the state level and 10 species are rare at the regional level. For 22 species there are known from one to five locations in the region. By the size of the habitat area, the most of cenopopulations of species occupy small areas (for 27 species it is less than 5 hectares). At present the location of 6 species has not been confirmed (Ceratophyllum tanaiticum Sapjeg., Potamogeton gramineus L., P. obtusifolius Mert.et W.D.J.Koch, P. praelongus Wulfen, P. sarmaticus Mäemets, Trapa natans). It has been established that populations of only 8 species are represented quite fully at the natural reserve areas of the region. On the basis of autphytosozological analysis we propose to include 22 species of vascular plants in the Regional Red List of the Kharkiv region and to exclude from it two species: Utricularia intermedia, which is in the Red Book of Ukraine and has the conservation status at the state level, and Vallisneria spiralis L., which is considered as adventive species.

The search and study of the distribution conditions of rare plants are important for their protection from extinction and the conservation of biodiversity. This activity becomes even more relevant due to the acceleration of climate change due to anthropogenic impact on biocenoses, in the formation of which plants play a substantial role, creating grass cover of meadows, floodplains, and undergrowth. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyse information on protected plant species and communities in the Ivotka river basin in the Sumy region and study the conditions of their distribution. In the course of the study, field examinations were conducted to search for rare plants and describe the places of their localisation using the route diagnostic method and desk studies to identify the found material. The result of the study was the finding of 28 rare species of vascular plants in the Ivotka river basin within the Sumy region, among which 2 are listed in Resolution No. 6 of the Berne Convention and the Red Book of Ukraine, 10 – in the Red Book of Ukraine, 16 – in the list of plant species that are not listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, but are rare or endangered in the territory of the Sumy region. These plants can be classified as especially valuable for conservation that require protection and balanced use of both these species and the biocenosis complex in their distribution territory. It is not enough to change the protected status of the plant species itself or the territory of their localisation to preserve and protect rare plants. Systematic implementation of responsible forest and land use practices is essential to preserve existing biodiversity. The results obtained help to establish the protected status for rare plants, develop measures for their protection and use, and determine the need to implement a system of responsible forest and land use for Biodiversity Conservation

The article presents data on the current state of the rare component of the urban flora of Pereiaslav. Urbanization is one of the most powerful factors of anthropogenic impact on nature, which causes radical changes in the species composition, structure, evolutionary development of flora and fauna on the territory of settlements and their environs. The flora of the city becomes the most important in the environment of the person and therefore requires special research and establishment of ways to restore the natural biological diversity, in particular, the conservation of fragments of natural flora and vegetation in the city. One of the important tasks of biodiversity conservation is the study of the location and protection of the most vulnerable species - rare, relict species listed on various levels. In addition to the presence of well-preserved fragments of natural vegetation, the unique character of Pereіaslav also lies in its geographical location. The city is located on the terrace of the middle reaches of the Dnieper River, through which passes the Dnieper meridional eco-corridor, which provides for the resettlement of plants in different zones. Given that the left-bank part of the Middle Dnieper is characterized by extremely transformed vegetation cover, every area of natural vegetation in this territory, including the territories of cities where the enclaves of natural vegetation have been preserved, which is, in particular, the studied city, should be considered as a zone of potential re-naturalization. It is established that the flora of Pereіaslav and its surroundings has 968 species of vascular plants, 66 species of mosses, 28 species of lichens and 146 species of algae. It is established that rare vascular plants cover 3.5% of the total floral composition of the natural fraction of urban flora. Inventory of flora reveals 34 rare protected plant species: 10 of which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (2009), 4 of them are listed in the Convention for International Trade with Endangered Species (CITES), 2 of them are listed in the Berne Convention, 1 of them are listed in the European Red List, 23 of them are included in the regional list Kyiv region. A brief description of the species and their location is given.

Black Stork Ciconia nigra L. is a rare species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, so any information about it is important, in particular for its protection. Within the period of 2020-2023, studies of this species were carried out on the territory of the western part of Zhytomyr Polissya to figure out the relevant population, factors affecting it, biological features and to compare them with the data obtained during the expedition in this area in 2009. The research was conducted by searching for the new and checking previously known nests in Horodnytsky Forest Farm. Moreover, local residents and employees of the forest farm provided some data. During the period of 2020-2023, 7 residential nests were found in the area investigated, 2 of which belong to one pair of Black Stork, 3 uninhabited nests and 5 likely nesting sites. Overall, 11 nesting pairs were confirmed. Considering that we have studied less than half of the area of this forest farm, using the extrapolation method, we can assume that the total number of species now is approximately 25 pairs. Therefore, the number has remained stable during the last decade. However, in recent years there has been a decrease in the number of pairs that begin to breed, as well as, a reduction in chicks’ number that have successfully hatched and left the nest. In 2020- 2023, the average number of chicks in a brood was 1.9, which is almost twice less than in 2004-2008 - 3.43. This is due to the climate change, as small ponds are drying up being the major feeding grounds of this species. In the future, such changes will lead to a decline in the population of Black Stork, so it is necessary to apply all potential means to protect them. In addition, the article discusses some biological features of the species.

Purpose. To create a thematic bibliographic list of publications, which highlight the results of scientific research of the family Labridae listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (2009): the goldsinny wrasse Ctenolabrus rupestris (Linnaeus, 1758) – a conservation status of rare species, the green wrasse Labrus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) – a rare, very vulnerable species, and the longnoused wrasse Symphodus rostratus (Bloch, 1791) as a vulnerable species of the ichthyofauna of Ukraine. Methods. Systemic and selective methods were applied in the process of the systematic search. The bibliographic core have been consisted of scientific publications, such as conference proceedings, monographs, articles from collections of scientific works and periodicals, in mainly English and Ukrainian, from the fund of the Institute of Fisheries of the NAAS Scientific Library, as well as resources available to its users. Results. There was composed a thematic list of publications with a total quantity of 56 sour­ces covering the time interval from 1976 to 2025 and outlining issues regarding population ecology and biology, results of morphological, physiological, genetic, ichthyopathological studying of wrasses (Labridae), which are protected as Red Book species of ichthyofauna of Ukraine. In addition, it contains a description of the experience of cultivating wrasses under controlled conditions in the context of their prospects as a potential object of polyculture with commercial fish species. The literary sources were arranged in alphabetical order by author or title, and described according to DSTU 8302:2015 “Information and documentation. Bibliographic reference. General principles and rules of composition”, with the amendments (code UKND 01.140.40), as well as in accordance with the requirements of APA style — international standard of references. Practical Value. The list may be useful for scientists, specialists, professors, and students whose area of interests includes studies of Red Book fish species, in particular the biological, population genetic, ecological and other cha­racteristics of the Labridae family (longnoused wrasse, green wrasse and goldsinny wrasse). BackgroundThe dataset contains records of vascular plant species occurrences and distribution in 39 old cemeteries of the Right–Bank Dnipro Grass Steppe District (southern Ukraine). It documents 635 vascular plant species. Notably, the high vascular plant diversity of old cemeteries includes 58 protected species (10.4% of the total recorded flora) with varying conservation statuses. The dataset underscores the conservation significance of old cemeteries in southern Ukraine by documenting the presence of protected species. Old cemeteries contribute to the conservation of endangered and protected vascular plant species outside legally protected steppe areas. Therefore, where they are abundant, they may play an important role in the future restitution of the European and Eurasian steppes.New informationThe dataset contains 6,923 occurrences of vascular plants (635 species) recorded in 2023-2024 in 39 old cemeteries of the Right–Bank Dnipro Grass Steppe District. The dataset includes information on 427 occurrences of 58 protected species of particular conservation interest mentioned in Resolution 6 of the Bern Convention as well as in the Red Data Book of Ukraine and regional Red Lists. This dataset highlights the significance of old cemeteries as pivotal refugia for vascular plant biodiversity within southern Ukraine. The high number of endangered and protected vascular plant species present in old cemeteries provides a critical opportunity for future conservation efforts, thereby contributing directly to biodiversity protection objectives.

The composition of the biota is dynamic and changes for many reasons, making biodiversity research relevant. Studies of rare species that are most vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures are of particular importance. Although the Mozh River flows through the central part of the Kharkiv Region, its valley remains understudied, especially the pine forests and their rare plants. The results of the current study include data from our field research, revision of the Herbarium of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (CWU), and literature sources from the second half of the 20th century to the present. This paper contains an annotated list of 35 species of vascular plants. Each species is provided with the data on its geographical range, distribution in Ukraine, population status and its study history in the Kharkiv Region, conservation status, and the state of its population in the studied forests. We found the localities of two species included in Appendix I of the Bern Convention (Salvinia natans (L.) All. and Jurinea cyanoides (L.) Rchb. and six species included in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (Botrychium lunaria (L.) Sw., Pulsatilla pratensis (L.) Mill., Iris pineticola Klok., Neottia nidus-avis (L.) Rich., Neottia ovata (L.) Hartm., Tulipa quercetorum Klok. & Zoz). We also found 19 species rare in the Kharkiv Region (Lycopodium clavatum L., Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth, Ophioglossum vulgatum L., Campanula persicifolia L., Chimaphila umbellata (L.) W.P.C. Barton, Comarum palustre L., Hottonia palustris L., Rubus saxatilis L., Carex pseudocyperus L., etc.). Nine regionally rare plant species have the boreal range type; they occur at the southern limit of their distribution range which indicates the specificity of ecological and climatic conditions formed in the pine forests in the Mozh River valley. In addition, we found five species without conservation status, but they are rare in the region (Caltha palustris L., Catolobus pendulus (L.) Al-Shehbaz, Gratiola officinalis L., Lythrum hyssopifolia L., Rubus polonicus Barr. ex Weston), and, therefore, they are recommended to be included in the next edition of the Official List of the Regionally Rare Plants of the Kharkiv Region. Three species (Buglossoides czernjajevii (Klokov & Des.-Shost.) Czerep., Jacobaea andrzejowskyi (Tzvelev) B.Nord. & Greuter, Sedum album L.) were identified as understudied in the Kharkiv region due to the lack of or insufficient information on their distribution in the study area.

The results of studying the consequences of the use of the invasive species Robinia pseudoasacia L. in reforestation and phytomelioration in the Prut-Dnister interfluve (within the Chernivtsi region) are presented. It is established that in the studied area artificial R. pseudoaсаcia plantations are represented by communities of alliance Chelidonio majoris-Robinion pseudoacaciae Hadač et Sofron ex Vítková in Chytrý 2013 of class Robinietea Jurko ex Hadač et Sofron 1980, the area of which has increased significantly in recent years. On the slopes of the Dnister canyon R. pseudoaсаcia plantations are often created on the site of meadow-steppe communities, that small fragments are preserved in adjacent areas, therefore, there is a replacement of natural grassland habitats by forest crops of introducers with a large number of ruderal and adventive plants species in the grass tier. In the region describes robinia plantations, in the grass layer of which grow species of rare plants included in international and national sozological lists, in particular to Annex I of the Bern Convention (Fritillaria montana Hoppe and Serratula lycopifolia (Vill.) A.Kern.), to Annex IIb of the Habitat Directive (Serratula lycopifolia) and to «The Red Data Book of Ukraine» (Bulbocodium versicolor (Ker Gawl.) Spreng., Lilium martagon L. and the above species). To date, we have not been able to reliably establish in the place of which communities R. pseudoasacia was planted. Given the high competitiveness of R. pseudoaciacia, the ability, penetrating into natural communities, to rapidly displace species of aboriginal plants and transform the biotope, it is possible to predict a decrease of these rare species populations or probably their complete disappearance from the coenosesis. Thus, the use of the invasive species R. pseudoasacia in reforestation and phytomelioration has led to the degradation of grass and forest phytodiversity of the Prut-Dnister interfluve. It is necessary to inform the organizations involved in landscaping of settlements, reforestation, phytomelioration, about the threats of phytoinvasions for local species, habitats, landscapes and recommend the use of local plants with similar ecological and biological features as an alternative to invasive or potentially invasive species.

In the Crimean peninsula there are six nature reserves, of which the Crimea nature reserve did not have a complete list of bryophytes. Bryological investigations were carried there by A.A. Sapehin, A.J. Roshal, D.K. Zerov, V.M. Melnychuk and others. According to their data it was known about 130 species in the reserve. L.Ya. Partyka investigated bryophytes of the Crimea nature reserve in 1963, 1964, and 1984 years. She visited the Nikita yaila, the Ulu-Uzen’ river with Golovkinski waterfall, the Roman-Kosh, Chorna and Chatyr-Dag mountains, the Beshuis’ki mines area. V.M. Virchenko has checked the Roshal moss collection from the reserve that keeped in the bryological herbarium of the Institute of Botany, NASU. In general on the territory of the Crimea nature reserve there are 189 species, of which 26 species of liverworts and 163 ones of mosses. The families of Brachytheciaceae, Orthotrichaceae, Amblystegiaceae have the relative richness of taxa that occur in forest and humid habitats. In the reserve the greatest species diversity was established in the belt of beech forest (146 species), after that follow the belt of oak forest (90) and pine forest (81), and the belt of yaila communities (69). One species from the Red Data Book of European Bryophytes (Neckera pennata Hedw.), four species from the Red Data Book of Ukraine (Cololejeunea rossettiana (C.Massal.) Schiffn., Fissidens rivularis (Spruce) Schimp., Neckera menziesii Drumm., Palamocladium euchloron (Mull.Hal.) Wijk et Margad.), as well as a number of regional rare bryophytes occur in that protected area. On the whole, the Crimea nature reserve plays the important role in protection of Crimean bryophytes because about 56% species diversity of that peninsula occur in its territory.

An annotated list of new records of butterflies and moths of the National Nature Park ‘Dvorichanskyi’ is provided. The list includes 85 species, of which 46 are registered in the park for the first time, 24 are new records for Kharkiv Region, and 1 (Phtheochroa unionana (Kennel, 1900)) is new for Ukraine. Totally, there are 1,284 species of Lepidoptera registered in the National Nature Park ‘Dvorichanskyi’. There are 12 species from the Red Data Book of Ukraine and 23 species from the Red Data Book of Kharkiv Region of Ukraine registered in the park.
