Retention of neohydrin-Hg203 as determined with a total-body scintillation counter.
excerpt As radioisotopes are coming to hold an increasingly important position in clinical medicine, new ways of utilizing them and new labeled compounds are being sought by many groups of workers. If one reviews the physical characteristics of the various nuclides, radiomercury, Hg203, is found to possess some very desirable features. In particular, it has a single, rather weak gamma emission (280 kev) and enables good resolution when multihole focusing collimator and gamma spectrometry are used. Blau and Bender have used radiomercury-labeled Neohydrin in brain tumor localization with considerable success (1), and McAfee and Wagner (2) have reported promising studies with the same tracer for kidney scanning. Following the report of these latter writers, we started kidney scanning, finding excellent differential concentration of the isotope in the kidneys. Initially, data concerning the effective half-life of the tracer had been accepted as reported by McAfee. This matter was re-considered, however, after...

The top 100 most cited manuscripts in bladder cancer: A bibliometric analysis (review article).
Bladder cancer is one of the top 10 frequently occurring neoplasms worldwide and is responsible for over 150,000 deaths per annum. Bibliometric analysis helps further our knowledge of bladder cancer research, topics and trends. It is useful to identify the most influential articles and its impact pertinent to this field that has helped mould our understanding and management of bladder cancer. Search terms related to bladder cancer were compiled and used to interrogate the Thompson Reuters Web of Science indexing database. The 100 most cited manuscripts in the English language were identified and further evaluated by theme, manuscript type, journal, year of publication, author and institution. The Web of Science search returned a total of 47,381 manuscripts. The median number of citations among the top 100 was 515, ranging from 2257 to 352. The greatest number of manuscripts in the top 100 were published in the Journal of Urology (n=15), followed by the Journal of Clinical Oncology (n=14) and European Urology (n=13). The most cited paper (Stein et al. Journal of Clinical Oncology 2001, 2257 citations) reported on the long term outcomes from a large cohort of patients that underwent radical cystectomy and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy for transitional cell carcinoma. The most prevalent theme was the pathobiology of bladder cancer (n=37) followed by oncological treatment (n=17). The majority of manuscripts were of original research (n=79) mainly based on basic science study design and published from institutions in the USA. The pathobiology and oncological treatment of bladder cancer were the areas with most citations within the top 100. This bibliometric analysis has identified influential articles in the field on bladder cancer, which provides a useful guide to authors as to what type of article constitutes a highly citable publication in this subject.

Globalization in Urology: A Bibliographical Analysis of Cross-Continent Publication between 2002 and 2012
Introduction: Asian scientists have now increasingly begun to contribute to globalization; yet it is not clear whether publishing in the field of urology is paralleled by elevated cross-continental scientific publishing. Materials and Methods: An exemplary bibliometric analysis of urologic journals from 3 different continents was conducted between 2002 and 2012. Based on the ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports, 2 urologic journals with similar impact factors (IFs) in 2013 were selected from Europe (‘British Journal of Urology International', ‘World Journal of Urology'), Asia (‘International Journal of Urology', ‘Asian Journal of Andrology') and North America (‘Urologic Oncology-Seminars and Original Investigations', ‘Urology'). The home continent of the journal, the workplace continental affiliation of the last author, article type (clinical, experimental or review) as well as the IF were documented. Results: Most authors published their manuscripts in journals from the same continent in which they worked. However, a significant increase in cross-continental publishing was apparent from 2002 to 2012. Asians publishing in North America increased from 17% in 2002 to 35% in 2012. Europeans also increased the number of articles they published in North American journals, while publications from North American authors were shifted towards both European and Asian journals. Experimental and clinical articles showed significant increases in cross-continental publishing, while review publishing showed no significant change. The average IF for authors from all 3 continents increased from 2002 to 2012 (p < 0.001). The largest increase in the IF was found for Asian authors (0.11 per year). Conclusions: Cross-continental publication significantly increased during the period from 2002 to 2012. The impact that the Asian authors have experienced was found to be gradually impacting the North American and European colleagues.

To explore the cooperation of authors, institutions, countries and find hot topics of priapism. Papers about priapism were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to conduct the bibliometric analyses. Network maps were generated to evaluate the collaborations between different keywords, institutions, authors and countries. A total of 2485 articles related to study of priapism were identified. We observed gradually increasing in the number of publications from 1970 to 2012, and the trend was to be relatively stable in the past ten years. Journal of Urology (322 papers) owned the highest number of publications and Journal of Urology was the most co-cited journal. Burnett, AL (106 papers) was the top most productive authors and the largest numbers of citations (1703 co-citations) during the past decades. There were active collaborations among the top authors. The USA was the leading contributor in this field with 820 papers. Cooperation between countries and between institutions was observed. The main hot topics included matters related to priapism, management, erectile dysfunction, penile erection, penis, diagnosis and high-flow priapism. This paper uses visualization tools to draw a knowledge map of priapism research, and provides a new perspective and direction for priapism research by clarifying the time series, development context, research hotspots, knowledge network structure and the status of major scholars in priapism.

Objectives Varicocele is one of the most common causes of male infertility. Bibliometric analysis can assist researchers in identifying research trends, providing clinicians with a general perspective, and guiding future research. In this study, we aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited (T100) articles to examine the characteristics and distribution of the most impactful publications on varicocele. Methods Search terms related to varicocele were compiled and used to interrogate the Web of Science Core Collection database. The 100 most cited manuscripts were identified and further evaluated by manuscript type, author, institution, journal, and year of publication. The search was restricted to the English language. Results T100 articles were published between 1980 and 2017, and the citation counts for the T100 articles ranged from 683 to 91. A total of 24 countries worldwide contributed to T100 articles; the country with the highest number of manuscripts in the T100 is the USA (n = 54). The most productive institution was the Cleveland Clinic, which had 14 articles. The authors with the most articles in the T100 are Agarwal A. and Goldstein M., who have 13 and 9 articles, respectively. T100 articles were published in 22 different journals, and the most T100 articles were published in the Journal of Urology, which had a 2023 IF of 5.9 (n = 25). Conclusions In this study, we identified the T100 articles in varicocele and analyzed them bibliometrically. Our findings showed that the USA is the dominant country regarding T100 articles, institutions, and scientists. The journals that published the most T100 articles were American-origin journals such as the Journal of Urology and Fertility and Sterility. The effects of varicocele on spermatozoa and fertility, the surgical techniques and outcomes of varicocelectomy were the topics that attracted the researcher’s academic attention most. Conflicts of Interest The authors declare no conflict of interest.
