Read moreFeasibility Study on Power Interchange Operation of Multiple Household Gas Engine Cogeneration Units by an Optimization Approach
Household cogeneration systems have been increasingly utilized for energy saving; however, their energy-saving effect in Japan is not necessarily sufficient due to their operational restriction that electricity generated by them cannot be transmitted to commercial electric power systems due to the regulation. To relax the restriction, the authors propose power interchange operation of multiple household gas engine cogeneration units and investigate its feasibility from the energy-saving viewpoint by an optimization approach. In this power interchange operation, a micro-grid using the units is constructed in a housing complex; electricity generated by them is shared among households without transmitting to a commercial electric power system outside the housing complex so that the operating time of these units may increase. To evaluate the energy-saving effect of the power interchange operation, a numerical analysis of operational strategies by the mixed-integer linear programming is conducted for ten households and three types of household energy supply configurations: the power interchange operation of the gas engine cogeneration units, a stand-alone operation of each gas engine cogeneration unit, and conventional energy supply system without the gas engine cogeneration unit. A computational result clarifies the advantage of the power interchange operation from the energy-saving viewpoint over the other energy supply configurations.

Urban space greening is of great significance for improving urban underground space environment. At present, the design of urban underground space in China mostly involves the design of underground space. However, very rare research has been conducted on the design of semi-underground space greening to date. Through case study and survey research, this study focuses on the design of domestic semi-underground space, the preliminary semi-underground space greening design scheme, and the concrete implementation process of the semi-underground public space green wall greening design. The current study employs the green wall project in a semi-underground space environment as an example to illustrate the application of greening design in urban semi-underground space, and provide guidance for future ecological design of semiunderground public space.

We describe a method that can be used to analyze chemical process flowsheets for waste minimization options for hazardous waste. The system is based on relating current waste minimization solutions to the waste generating unit operation. The system is simple and emphasizes EPA pollution prevention priorities. The system database contains numerous waste minimization solutions compiled from case studies, EPA reports, consultant reports and options identified during waste minimization visits. The database structure and the system which uses the database to analyze chemical process flow is described for two existing companies, a specialty chemical company and a plating company. A pollution prevention index (PPI) that emphasizes EPA pollution prevention priorities as well as economic and technical factors is proposed and is used by the system to rank solutions for a given process flowsheet. Analyses for the specific plating and specialty chemical companies examined are described in detail. It is shown...

Re-engaging with the process and materials of making is a form of transparency common in sustainable design approaches. The current academic studio model, wherein a student chooses a retail fabric for a one-off design or stand-alone collection, does not reflect resilient circular models of apparel production. An opportunity exists to model ways in which the designer might be empowered to designing out waste and keep materials in use by re-utilization<br>(Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). This project focuses on sustainable material selection, creative ideation and design process as strategies toward a considered and sustainable design solution. As design researchers exploring sustainable design in our own scholarship, we were eager to embed resilience and circular strategy into our teaching.
Read moreSustainable Supplier Selection Process in Edible Oil Production by a Hybrid Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process and Green Data Envelopment Analysis for the SMEs Food Processing Industry
Today, business organizations are facing increasing pressure from a variety of sources to operate using sustainable processes. Thus, most companies need to focus on their supply chains to enhance sustainability to meet customer demands and comply with environmental legislation. To achieve these goals, companies must focus on criteria that include CO2 (carbon footprint) and toxic emissions, energy use and efficiency, wastage generations, and worker health and safety. As in other industries, the food processing industry requires large inputs of resources, which results in several negative environmental effects; thus, decision-makers have to evaluate qualitative and quantitative factors. This work identifies the best supplier for edible oil production in the small and medium enterprise (SME) food processing industry in Vietnam. This study also processes a hybrid multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) model using a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and green data envelopment analysis (GDEA) model to identify the weight of all criteria of a supplier’s selection process based on opinions from company procurement experts. Subsequently, GDEA is applied to rank all potential supplier lists. The primary objective of this work is to present a novel approach which integrates FAHP and DEA for supplier selection and also consider the green issue in edible oil production in uncertain environments. The aim of this research is also to provide a useful guideline for supplier selection based on qualitative and quantitative factors to improve the efficiency of supplier selection in the food industry and other industries. The results reveal that Decision-Making Unit 1 (DMU 1), DMU 3, DMU 7, and DMU 9 are identified as extremely efficient for five DEA models, which are the optimal suppliers for edible oil production. The contributions of this research include a proposed MCDM model using a hybrid FAHP and GDEA model for supplier selection in the SME food processing industry under a fuzzy environment conditions in Vietnam. This research also is part of an evolution of a new hybrid model that is flexible and practical for decision-makers. In addition, the research also provides a useful guideline in supplier selection in the food processing industry and a guideline for supplier selection in other industries.
Read moreOpportunities for small‐scale biorefinery for production of sugar and ethanol in the Netherlands
Developments such as the Common Agricultural Policy reform, growth of the bio‐based economy, increasing energy prices, increasing sustainability demands, and expected growth of global sugar demand change the environment in which the sugar producing industry operates. In order to remain competitive and profit from this, the traditional large‐scale sugar producing industry can adapt. The aim of this study was to address sustainability and energy issues of the traditional sugar production process and to provide opportunities for improving the process and value chain. The methodological approach included evaluating function and resource usage of the unit operations. More sustainable alternative unit operations and processes were identified and studied. The results indicate that the current sugar production and by‐product valorization focuses on centralized processing and has been individually optimized per sector and industry based on relatively inexpensive transportation and energy without a focus as such on the bio‐based economy. For incorporation of the opportunities, a process for targeting new bio‐based markets and supplementing large‐scale sugar production was designed. It was found that small‐scale biorefineries as an alternative and/or supplementation of the traditional large‐scale process have the ability to increase the overall sustainability of sugarbeet processing, for example reduce energy usage and carbon footprint, by reducing transportation movements. Moreover, it provides opportunities for leaving out certain unit operations and using less capital‐intensive technologies. With a holistic approach throughout the value chain, the introduction of small‐scale biorefineries can help meet the challenges of the sugar producing industry, while simultaneously benefitting people, planet, and profit.
