A dynamic Access Control model based on trust

A major development in the field of access control is the dominant role-based access control (RBAC) scheme. The fascination of RBAC lies in its enhanced security along with the concept of roles. In addition, attribute-based access control (ABAC) is added to the access control models, which is famous for its dynamic behavior. Separation of duty (SOD) is used for enforcing least privilege concept in RBAC and ABAC. Moreover, SOD is a powerful tool that is used to protect an organization from internal security attacks and threats. Different problems have been found in the implementation of SOD at the role level. This paper discusses that the implementation of SOD on the level of roles is not a good option. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid access control model to implement SOD on the basis of permissions. The first part of the proposed model is based on the addition of attributes with dynamic characteristics in the RBAC model, whereas the second part of the model implements the permission-based SOD in dynamic RBAC model. Moreover, in comparison with previous models, performance and feature analysis are performed to show the strength of dynamic RBAC model. This model improves the performance of the RBAC model in terms of time, dynamicity, and automatic permissions and roles assignment. At the same time, this model also reduces the administrator’s load and provides a flexible, dynamic, and secure access control model.

In recent years, the access control technology has been researched widely in workflow system, two typical technologies of that are RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) and TBAC (Task-Based Access Control) model, which has been successfully used in the role authorizing and assigning in a certain extent. However, during the process of complicating a system's structure, these two types of technology can not be used in minimizing privileges and separating duties, and they are inapplicable when users have a request of frequently changing on the workflow's process. In order to avoid having these weakness during the applying, a variable flow dynamic role_task_view (briefly as DRTVBAC) of fine-grained access control model is constructed on the basis existed model. During the process of this model applying, an algorithm is constructed to solve users' requirements of application and security needs on fine-grained principle of privileges minimum and principle of dynamic separation of duties. The DRTVBAC model is implemented in the actual system, the figure shows that the task associated with the dynamic management of role and the role assignment is more flexible on authority and recovery, it can be met the principle of least privilege on the role implement of a specific task permission activated; separated the authority from the process of the duties completing in the workflow; prevented sensitive information discovering from concise and dynamic view interface; satisfied with the requirement of the variable task-flow frequently.

Security of Platform as a Service for multi-tenant becomes a key factor for the sustainable development of the system. This paper analyzes the limitations and shortcomings of traditional identity authentication. Identity authentication is realized through the ticket authentication method. Considering the dynamic and timeliness of resources in cloud computing, this paper proposes a dynamic access control method based on Role-Based Access Control and usage control model from the perspective of business conversation, so as to realize the dynamic access control of tenants to resources in Platform as a Service. The paper elaborates on the security and usability of the key generation, distribution, update, and metadata access control processes. Practice shows that the cloud resource access control model can flexibly realize the control of cloud resources such as authority separation, resource attribute restriction and utilization control, so as to better meet the demand of cloud resource access control with multi-tenant sharing and dynamic characteristics in cloud environment.

The authors propose a dynamic access control model (DACM) to meet the access control requirements of an environment that frequently changes and adjusts user access privileges and/or target object confidential level. For the DACM, one uses an object-oriented technique to describe the whole model and also to implement its access control mechanism called the dynamic access control system. A real case similar to the DACM has been implemented in the Administration Information System of the Central Police University. The performance shown in this case is quite good from the viewpoint of the end user and system developers/maintainers. Role based access control (RBAC) is well known due to its high security and ease in management for permissions. But it also has some deficiencies like role structure complexity and having no dynamic behavior. Attribute based access control (ABAC) is a dynamic access control model that provides ease of role structuring. Analyzing roles and permissions after implementing access control model and its management is not easy in ABAC. In this paper, an access control model is developed that accumulates the strengths of RBAC and ABAC and also remove some of the deficiencies of above stated models. The proposed model implements and exploits the attributes of objects, permissions, roles, and users as foundation. Moreover the proposed model employs the role structuring ability of ABAC and tight security behavior of RBAC. We also implemented the proposed model and discussed with respect to a case study.

Role based Access Control (RBAC) is known as an evolution in the field of access control. The strength of RBAC is considered due to the incorporation of concept of roles. Separation of Duty (SOD) is a constraint that implements least privilege principle in RBAC. Dynamic Separation of Duty (DSD) is a powerful constraint to control internal security threats. Current RBAC standard implements DSD on the level of roles. This creates various problems. In this paper, various problems in case of implementing DSD on the level of roles are identified. We show and prove that RBAC's strength is the incorporation of concept of roles but this is not for better security in terms of authorization. Instead this helps in better administration or usability for users. The RBAC usability can be improved if RBAC administration is being implemented on the basis of roles and access control can be more secure if DSD is being implemented on the basis of conflicting permissions. The concept of normalized roles is also introduced. The proposed model implements access control on the basis of normalized role. DSD is being implemented on the basis of conflicting permissions and non-conflicting permissions are exercised under the umbrella of role. This becomes a hybrid approach for access control. The administrators are given freedom in implementing DSD in various modes according to the organizational requirements from lenient to strict implementation. The proposed model is also formally specified and the benefits as a result of implementing the proposed model are discussed.

Access control system is an important component to protect patients’ information from abuse in a health care system. It is a major concern in the management, design, and development of healthcare systems. Designing access control policies for healthcare systems is complicated due to the dynamic and inherent complexity of the tasks performed by the healthcare personnel. Permissions in access control systems are usually granted on the basis of static policies. However, static policies are not enough to cope with various situations such as emergencies. Most often, the Break-the-glass mechanism is used to bypass static policies to handle emergency situations. Since healthcare systems are critical systems, where errors can be very costly in terms of lives, quality of life, and/or dollars, it is crucial to identify discrepancies between policy specifications and their intended function to implement correctly a flexible access control system. Formal verifications are necessary for exhaustive verification and validation of policy specifications to ensure that the policy specifications truly encapsulate the desires of the policy authors. We present a verifiable framework to enact a dynamic access control model by integrating the ANSI/INCTIS RBAC Reference Model in a workflow and an approach for property verifications of the access control model. Access control policies are expressed by the formal semantics of a model checker and properties are verified by the DiVinE model checker.

Multi-domain authorization and decision-making method of access control in the edge environment

The rapid growth of internet of things (IoT) applications, especially in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), has led to the generation of large amounts of real-time data from interconnected devices. This growth leads to challenges in securing data access and managing resources efficiently. To address these challenges, we propose a dynamic trust-based access control (DTAC) model for IoT and WSN applications. The DTAC model integrates behavioral trust evaluation and context-aware decision making to dynamically adapt access permissions to network conditions in real-time. the trust scores are calculated using fuzzy logic and machine learning techniques, which enable adaptive decision-making. To increase security, the model uses a hybrid encryption scheme that combines elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) with lightweight symmetric encryption, ensuring data confidentiality with minimal computational overhead. In addition, access control decisions are refined by contextual factors such as user roles, device locations, and data sensitivity. The model includes a collaborative re-evaluation mechanism that periodically updates trust scores and isolates malicious nodes without compromising network stability. The DTAC model is evaluated on key metrics such as security resilience, energy efficiency, and latency and demonstrates better performance than existing solutions. This model provides a scalable, energy-efficient, and secure framework for IoT and WSN applications that ensures reliable data access and privacy in diverse environments.

Access control is generally a rule or procedure that allows, denies, restricts or limit access to system's resources. It may, as well, monitor and record all attempts made to access a system. Access Control may also identify users attempting to access unauthorized resources. It is a mechanism which is very much important for protection in computer security. Various access control models are in use, including the most common Mandatory Access Control (MAC), Discretionary Access Control (DAC) and Role Based Access Control (RBAC). All these models are known as identity based access control models. In all these access control models, user (subjects) and resources (objects) are identified by unique names. Identification may be done directly or through roles assigned to the subjects. These access control methods are effective in unchangeable distributed system, where there are only a set of Users with a known set of services. For this reason, we propose a framework which is well suited to many situations in cloud computing where users or applications can be clearly separated according to their job functions. In this chapter, we proposes a role based access control framework with various features including security of sensitive data, authorization policy and secure data from hackers. Our proposed role based access control algorithm provides tailored and fine level of user access control services without adding complexity, and supports access privileges updates dynamically when a user's role is added or updated.

The importance of security-enhancing mechanisms at the kernel level, such as an access control, has been increasingly emphasized as the weaknesses and limitation of mechanisms at the user level have been revealed. Among many access controls available, role based access control (RBAC) is mandatory and supports the separation of duty when compared to discretionary access control (DAC). With these advantages, RBAC has been widely implemented at various levels of computing environments, such as the operating system and database management system levels. However, the overheads for supporting all of the RBAC features and flexibility are significant. We designed a fast, simple, and mandatory access control model with some RBAC and DAC characteristics, then implemented a prototype and measured its overheads.

Enterprises collect and use private information for various purposes. Access control can limit who can obtain such data, however, the purpose of their use is not clear. In this paper we focus on the purpose of data access and demonstrate that dynamic role-based access control (RBAC) is not sufficient for enforcement of privacy requirements. We extend RBAC with monitoring capability and describe a formal approach to determining whether access control policies actually implement privacy requirements based on the behaviour of the system. We show how access control fails to detect privacy violations and use small examples to demonstrate how our technique is used to solve such issues. We also describe a prototype implementation of our technique and present two case studies that demonstrate the applicability of our approach in practice.

While providing access control in a hierarchical access structure, a partially ordered set of security classes can be used to depict an access hierarchy. Data accessible to descendants of a particular security class should also be accessible to the users of that security class. Towards this, an access control scheme is proposed for providing dynamic hierarchical access control. In the proposed solution, the storage at the users is constant. The public key storage is equal to the size of the hierarchy. Also, deriving the decryption key of a descendant class involves constant cost at the users in the security class.

The increased complexity of modern access control (AC) systems stems partly from the need to support diverse and multiple administrative domains. Systems engineering is a key technology to manage this complexity since it is capable of assuring that an operational system will adhere to the initial conceptual design and defined requirements. Specifically, the verification stage of an AC system should be based on techniques that have a sound and mathematical underpinning. Working on this assumption, model checking techniques are applied for the verification of predefined system properties, and thus, conducting a security analysis of a system. In this paper, we propose the utilization of automated and error-free model checking techniques for the verification of security properties in multi-domain AC systems. Therefore, we propose a formal definition in temporal logic of four AC system properties regarding secure inter-operation with Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) policies in order to be verified by using model checking. For this purpose, we demonstrate the implementation of a tool chain for expressing RBAC security policies, reasoning on role hierarchies and properly feeding the model checking process. The proposed approach can be applied in any RBAC model to efficiently detect non-conformance between an AC system and its security specifications. As a proof of concept, we provide examples illustrating the verification of the defined secure inter-operation properties in multi-domain RBAC policies.

In many domains, organizations must model personnel and corresponding data access privileges as fine-grained hierarchical access control models. One class of such models, Role-based Access Control (RBAC) models, has been widely accepted and deployed. However, RBAC models are often used without involving cryptographic keys nor considering confidentiality/privacy at the data level. How to design, implement and dynamically modify such a hierarchy, ensure user and data privacy and distribute and manage necessary cryptographic keys are issues of the utmost importance. One elegant solution for cryptography-based hierarchical access control combines the collusion-resistant and privacy-preserving Access Control Polynomial (ACP) and Atallah's Dynamic and Efficient Extended Key Management scheme. Such a model involves cryptographic keys used to encrypt data, can address confidentiality/privacy at the data level and can efficiently support dynamic changes to the RBAC access hierarchy. In this paper, we discuss several implementation challenges and propose solutions when deploying such a system including: data encryption and decryption, key storage and key distribution. Furthermore, we provide analysis of the efficiency and scalability of the resulting system.
