A Nodes-Based Non-Structural Model Considering a Series Structure for Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis
The aim of heat exchanger network synthesis is to design a cost-effective network configuration with the maximum energy recovery. Therefore, a nodes-based non-structural model considering a series structure (NNM) is proposed. The proposed model utilizes a simple principle based on setting the nodes on streams such that to achieve optimization of a heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) problem. The proposed model uses several nodes to quantify the possible positions of heat exchangers so that the matching between hot and cold streams is random and free. Besides the stream splits, heat exchangers with series structures are introduced in the proposed model. The heuristic algorithm used to solve NNM model is a random walk algorithm with compulsive evolution. The proposed model is used to solve four scale cases of a HENS problem, the results show that the costs obtained by NNM model can be respectively lower 3226 $/a(Case 1), 11,056 $/a(Case 2), 2463 $/a(Case 3), 527 $/a(Case 4) than the best costs listed in literature.

Feature selection is an important part of data mining, image recognition and other fields. The efficiency and accuracy of classification algorithm can be improved by selecting the best feature subset. The classical feature selection technology has some limitations, and heuristic optimization algorithm for feature selection is an alternative method to solve these limitations and find the optimal solution. In this paper, we proposed a Multi Strategy Grey Wolf Optimizer algorithm (MSGWO) based on random guidance, local search and subgroup cooperation strategies for feature selection, which solves the problem that the traditional grey wolf optimizer algorithm (GWO) is easy to fall into local optimization with a single search strategy. Among them, the random guidance strategy can make full use of the random characteristics to enhance the global search ability of the population, and the local search strategy makes grey wolf individuals make full use of the search space around the current best solution, and the subgroup cooperation strategy is very important to balance the global search and local search of the algorithm in the iterative process. MSGWO algorithm cooperates with each other in three strategies to update the location of grey wolf individuals, and enhances the global and local search ability of grey wolf individuals. Experimental results show that MSGWO can quickly find the optimal feature combination and effectively improve the performance of the classification model.

How to strike a balance between local search and global search in multiobjective memetic algorithms for multiobjective 0/1 knapsack problems
An important implementation issue in the design of hybrid evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms with local search (i.e., multiobjective memetic algorithms) is how to strike a balance between local search and global search. If local search is applied to all individuals at every generation, almost all computation time is spent by local search. As a result, global search ability of memetic algorithms is not well utilized. We can use three ideas for decreasing the computation load of local search. One idea is to apply local search to only a small number of individuals. This idea can be implemented by introducing a local search probability, which is used to choose only a small number of initial solutions for local search from the current population. Another idea is a periodical (i.e., intermittent) use of local search. This idea can be implemented by introducing a local search interval (e.g., every 10 generations), which is used to specify when local search is applied. The other idea is an early termination of local search. Local search for each initial solution is terminated after a small number of neighbors are examined. This idea can be implemented by introducing a local search length, which is the number of examined neighbors in a series of iterated local search from a single initial solution. In this paper, we discuss the use of these three ideas to strike a local-global search balance. Through computational experiments on a two-objective 500-item knapsack problem, we compare various settings of local search such as short local search from all individuals at every generation, long local search from only a few individuals at every generation, and periodical long local search from all individuals. Global search in this paper means genetic search by crossover and mutation in multiobjective memetic algorithms.
Read moreLearning-Based Genetic Algorithm to Schedule an Extended Flexible Job Shop.
This work considers an extended flexible job-shop scheduling problem from a semiconductor manufacturing environment. To find its high-quality solution in a reasonable time, a learning-based genetic algorithm (LGA) that incorporates a parallel long short-term memory network-embedded autoencoder model is proposed. In it, genetic algorithm is selected as a main optimizer. A novel autoencoder model is trained offline via end-to-end unsupervised learning without relying on labeled data. This model captures the major linkages among decision variables and generates promising solutions in an informative low-dimensional space, striking a balance between computational efficiency and solution quality. To further improve its search ability, a co-evolving framework is designed, which includes both a network-embedded subpopulation and a regular one. The former focuses on its global search while the latter ensures LGA's convergence. An information exchange method between the two subpopulations balances global and local search, improving its overall optimization ability. This work conducts various numerical experiments to compare LGA with the CPLEX optimizer, several classical heuristics, and some popular methods. Results show that LGA outperforms its peers in finding high-quality solutions in a reasonable time.
Read moreParametrization and Balancing Local and Global Search
This chapter is devoted to the parametrization of memetic algorithms and how to find a good balance between global and local search. This is one of the most pressing questions when designing a hybrid algorithm. The idea of hybridization is to combine the advantages of different components. But if one components dominates another one, hybridization may become more hindering than useful and computational effort may be wasted. For the case of memetic algorithms, if the effect of local search is too strong, the algorithm may quickly get stuck in local optima of bad quality. Moreover, the algorithm is likely to rediscover the same local optimum over and over again. Lastly, an excessive local search quickly leads to a loss of diversity within the population.

Dynamic scheduling of heterogeneous resources across mobile edge-cloud continuum using fruit fly-based simulated annealing optimization scheme
Achieving sustainable profit advantage, cost reduction and resource utilization are always a bottleneck for resource providers, especially when trying to meet the computing needs of resource hungry applications in mobile edge-cloud (MEC) continuum. Recent research uses metaheuristic techniques to allocate resources to large-scale applications in MECs. However, some challenges attributed to the metaheuristic techniques include entrapment at the local optima caused by premature convergence and imbalance between the local and global searches. These may affect resource allocation in MECs if continually implemented. To address these concerns and ensure efficient resource allocation in MECs, we propose a fruit fly-based simulated annealing optimization scheme (FSAOS) to serve as a potential solution. In the proposed scheme, the simulated annealing is incorporated to balance between the global and local search and to overcome its premature convergence. We also introduce a trade-off factor to allow application owners to select the best service quality that will minimize their execution cost. Implementation of the FSAOS is carried out on EdgeCloudSim Simulator tool. Simulation results show that the FSAOS can schedule resources effectively based on tasks requirement by returning minimum makespan and execution costs, and achieve better resource utilization compared to the conventional fruit fly optimization algorithm and particle swarm optimization. To further unveil how efficient the FSAOSs, a statistical analysis based on 95% confidential interval is carried out. Numerical results show that FSAOS outperforms the benchmark schemes by achieving higher confidence level. This is an indication that the proposed FSAOS can provide efficient resource allocation in MECs while meeting customers’ aspirations as well as that of the resource providers.
Read moreSynthesis of Cost-Optimal Heat Exchanger Networks Using a Novel Stochastic Algorithm and a Modified Stage-Wised Superstructure
Facing the current energy structure urgently needs to be transformed, heat exchanger network (HEN) can implement heat recovery and cost reduction by the arrangement for heat exchanges between cold and hot streams. The plenty of integer and continuous variables involved in HEN synthesis cause the results to be easily trapped in local optima. To avoid this situation, the mechanism of accepting imperfect solutions is added in a novel algorithm called Random Walk Algorithm with Compulsive Evolution. However, several potential solutions maybe abandoned by accepting imperfect solutions. To maintain the global searching ability, and at the same time, protecting the potential solutions during the optimization process, the limitations of accepting imperfect solutions are investigated in this work, then a back substitution strategy and elite optimization strategy based on algorithm are proposed. The former is to identify and adjust the inferior individuals in long-term stagnation while the latter is to keep and perform a fine search for the better solutions. Furthermore, a modified stage-wised superstructure is also developed to implement the flexible placement of utilities, which efficiently enlarges the solution domain. The validation of strategies and model is implemented by three cases, the results are lower, with 2219 $/year, 1280 $/year, and 2M $/year than the best published result, revealing the strong abilities of the proposed method in designing more economical HENs.
Read moreEffective operators using parallel processing for nurse scheduling by cooperative genetic algorithm
This paper proposes effective operators for cooperative genetic algorithm (CGA) to be applied to a practical nurse scheduling problem. The nurse scheduling is a very complex task. In the real hospital, the change of the schedule occurs frequently. This paper describes a technique to reoptimise such nurse schedule. CGA is superior in ability for local search, but often stagnates at the unfavourable situation because it is inferior in ability for global search. To improve this problem, we have proposed a mutation operator depending on the optimisation speed. The mutation yields small changes into the population. Then the population is able to escape from a local minimum area. However, this operator has two parameters to define itself. Therefore, we have proposed periodic mutation operator which has only one parameter. In the case which contains such changes, a more powerful operator is necessary. We propose a multi-branched mutation (MBM) operator. MBM provides natural concurrency. Therefore, we have implemented parallel processing of MBM. In many cases, when the optimisation converges on an unfavourable penalty value in the early stage of the optimisation, the final population is also unfavourable. Therefore, we propose a technique of multiplied initial populations (MIP).
Read moreVNE strategy based on chaos hybrid flower pollination algorithm considering multi-criteria decision making
With the development of science and technology and the need for multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), the optimization problem to be solved becomes extremely complex. The theoretically accurate and optimal solutions are often difficult to obtain. Therefore, meta-heuristic algorithms based on multi-point search have received extensive attention. The flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is a new swarm intelligence meta-heuristic algorithm, which can effectively control the balance between global search and local search through a handover probability, and gradually attracts the attention of researchers. However, the algorithm still has problems that are common to optimization algorithms. For example, the global search operation guided by the optimal solution is easy to lead the algorithm into local optimum, and the vector-guided search process is not suitable for solving some problems in discrete space. Moreover, the algorithm does not consider dynamic multi-criteria decision problems well. Aiming at these problems, the design strategy of hybrid flower pollination algorithm for virtual network embedding problem is discussed. Combining the advantages of the genetic algorithm and FPA, the algorithm is optimized for the characteristics of discrete optimization problems. The cross-operation is used to replace the cross-pollination operation to complete the global search and replace the mutation operation with self-pollination operation to enhance the ability of local search. Moreover, a life cycle mechanism is introduced as a complement to the traditional fitness-based selection strategy to avoid premature convergence. A chaos optimization strategy is introduced to replace the random sequence-guided crossover process to strengthen the global search capability and reduce the probability of producing invalid individuals. In addition, a two-layer BP neural network is introduced to replace the traditional objective function to strengthen the dynamic MCDM ability. Simulation results show that the proposed method has good performance in link load balancing, revenue???cost ratio, VN requests acceptance ratio, mapping average quotation, average time delay, average packet loss rate, and the average running time of the algorithm.
Read moreA memetic-based technical indicator portfolio and parameters optimization approach for finding trading signals to construct transaction robot in smart city era
With the development of smart cities, the demand for personal financial services is becoming more and more importance, and personal investment suggestion is one of them. A common way to reach the goal is using a technical indicator to form trading strategy to find trading signals as trading suggestion. However, using only a technical indicator has its limitations, a technical indicator portfolio is further utilized to generate trading signals for achieving risk aversion. To provide a more reliable trading signals, in this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm for obtaining a technical indicator portfolio and its parameters for predicting trends of target stock by using the memetic algorithm. In the proposed approach, the genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) algorithm are utilized for global and local search. In global search, a technical indicator portfolio and its parameters are first encoded into a chromosome using a bit string and real numbers. Then, the initial population is generated based on the encoding scheme. Fitness value of a chromosome is evaluated by the return and risk according to the generated trading signals. In local search, SA is employed to tune parameters of indicators in chromosomes. After that, the genetic operators are continue employed to generate new offspring. Finally, the chromosome with the highest fitness value could be provided to construct transaction robot for making investment plans in smart city environment. Experiments on three real datasets with different trends were made to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, including uptrend, consolidation, and downtrend. The total returns of them on testing datasets are 26.53% 33.48%, and 9.7% that indicate the proposed approach can not only reach risk aversion in downtrends but also have good returns in others.
Read moreFIR digital filter design based on improved artificial bee colony algorithm
The traditional swarm intelligence optimization algorithm is prone to fall into local optimal solutions in finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter design and has slow convergence speed. In order to optimize the design of FIR filter, a FIR digital filter design method based on improved bee colony (ABC) algorithm is proposed. This improved ABC algorithm can adaptively adjust the step size of the selected neighborhood of nectar source location. At the same time, the information of the global optimal solution is used to guide the search of candidate solution, which improves the global search ability of the algorithm. The improved ABC algorithm can balance the conflict between local search ability and global search ability, so it can achieve better optimization effect. The time and space complexity of the algorithm is analyzed in detail. Then, the improved ABC algorithm is used to design three typical FIR digital filters, namely low-pass, band-pass and band-stop filter. The performance of the designed filter is tested by simulation experiments. The experimental results show that compared with other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, the proposed FIR filter design method has achieved better effect and performance. Meanwhile, the proposed design method has shorter optimization time. The superiority of the proposed method is verified.
