A new solid-state electrolyte based on polymeric ionic liquid for high-performance supercapacitor

Polymeric ionic liquid enhanced all-solid-state electrolyte membrane for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Conductivity in polymer electrolytes has been generally discussed with the assumption that the segmental motions control charge transport. However, much less attention has been paid to the mechanism of ion conductivity where the motions of ions are less dependent (decoupled) on segmental dynamics. We present that this phenomenon is observed in ionic materials as they approach their glass transition temperature and becomes essential for design and development of highly conducting solid polymer electrolytes. In this paper, we study the effect of chain rigidity on the decoupling of ion transport from segmental motion in three polymerized ionic liquids (polyILs) containing the same cation–anion pair but differing in flexibility of the polymer backbones and side groups. Analysis of dielectric and rheology data reveals that decoupling is strong in vinyl-based rigid polymers while almost negligible in novel siloxane-based flexible polyILs. To explain this behavior, we investigated ion and chain dynamics at ambient and elevated pressure. Our results suggest that decoupling has a direct relationship to the frustration in chain packing and free volume. Finally, these conclusions are also supported by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) combine the benefits of ceramic electrolyte and polymer electrolyte, and have broad application prospects in high‐energy lithium metal batteries. However, low Li+ conductivity and tensile strength are crucial elements that hinder the application of solid polymer electrolytes. In this paper, an effective solid polymer electrolyte was proposed to solve these problems. A polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) was chosen as the ionic transport material to synthesize three‐dimensional cross‐linked ion channels through thermal polymerization, which can effectively improve the ionic conductivity. This work is different from some other reports that add ionic liquid without C=C double bond. We used the vinyl ionic liquid (IL) as matrix via polymerization with azobis initiator (AIBN) and the obtained co‐polymer has excellent flexibility and non‐flowing character. Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) ceramic filler was added to enhance the thermal stability and tensile strength of the electrolyte. Meanwhile, solid‐state batteries (SSBs) assembled with LiFePO4 cathode and high‐voltage LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode can deliver remarkable cell performance. This work presents an appropriate device for the structure of modern polymerized ionic liquid solid polymer electrolytes, and shows significant implication for the progress of high‐property polymer electrolytes.

Dispersion of graphene nanosheets in a water and polymer matrix has been rarely achieved due to graphene’s hydrophobicity, which thus impedes its potential anticorrosive application. In this study, stable graphene aqueous dispersion was obtained by using imidazole-based polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) as the dispersant with ultrasonic vibration. Stacked graphene sheets were exfoliated to a few layers via cation-π interaction between PIL and graphene nanosheets. Electrochemical impedance measurements were taken to investigate the anticorrosion performance of epoxy coatings with or without polymeric ionic liquid–graphene (PIL–G) hybrids. Results indicated that the PIL–G hybrid significantly enhanced the long-term protective performance of epoxy coatings, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of the corrosion-inhibitive PIL and impermeable graphene nanosheets.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) show potential to be used as new water-free polyelectrolyte-based electrorheological (ER) material. To direct ER material design at the molecular level, unveiling structure-property relationships is essential. While a few studies compare the mobile ions in PILs there is still a limited understanding of how the structure of tethered counterions on backbone influences ER property. In this study, three PILs with same mobile anions but different tethered countercations (e.g., poly(dimethyldiallylammonium) P[DADMA]+, poly(benzylethyl) trimethylammonium P[VBTMA]+, and poly(1-ethyl-4-vinylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) P[C2VIm]+) are prepared and the influence of tethered countercations on the ER property of PILs is investigated. It shows that among these PILs, P[DADMA]+ PILs have the strongest ER property and P[C2VIm]+ PILs have the weakest one. By combining dielectric spectra analysis with DFT calculation and activation energy measurement, it can clarify that the influence of tethered counterions on ER property is mainly associated with ion-pair interaction energy that is affecting ionic conductivity and interfacial polarization induced by ion motion. P[DADMA]+ has the smallest ion-pair interaction energy with mobile ions, which can result in the highest ionic conductivity and the fastest interfacial polarization rate for its strongest ER property.

Analysis of beer volatiles by polymeric imidazolium-solid phase microextraction coatings: Synthesis and characterization of polymeric imidazolium ionic liquids

We performed long-time all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of cationic polymerized ionic liquids with eight mobile counterions, systematically varying size and shape to probe their influence on the decoupling of conductivity from polymer segmental dynamics. We demonstrated rigorous identification of the dilatometric glass-transition temperature (Tg) for polymerized ionic liquids using an all-atom force field. Polymer segmental relaxation rates are presumed to be consistent for different materials at the same glass-transition-normalized temperature (Tg/T), allowing us to extract a relative order of decoupling by examining conductivity at the same Tg/T. Size, or ionic volume, cannot fully explain decoupling trends, but within certain geometric and chemical-specific classes, small ions generally show a higher degree of decoupling. This size effect is not universal and appears to be overcome when structural results reveal substantial coordination delocalization. We also reveal a universal inverse correlation between ion-association structural relaxation time and absolute conductivity for these polymerized ionic liquids, supporting the ion-hopping interpretation of ion mobility in polymerized ionic liquids.

Worldwide energy needs are growing, requiring new extraction techniques for crude oil from old reservoirs. However, conventional chemicals face difficulties when exposed to harsh reservoir environments such as solubility in high saline water and heat stability under harsh reservoir environments. This study investigates the potential of newly synthesized polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) as alternative options. A series of PILs was synthesized and characterized by using NMR and FTIR techniques. It was noticed that a PIL without ethoxy groups exhibits precipitation and therefore is not suitable for oilfield applications. However, the incorporation of ethoxy groups in the chemical structure of PILs leads to excellent solubility in low to high salinity brine. The solubility of the synthesized PILs in formation water, seawater, and deionized water, as well as their thermal stability using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), was assessed. In addition, the surface properties, including critical micelle concentration (cmc), surface tension (γcmc), surface excess concentration (Γmax), minimal surface area per molecule (Amin), free adsorption energy (ΔG°ads), and free micellization energy (ΔG°mic), were also evaluated. The findings revealed that adding ethoxy groups in PILs led to a drop in Γmax and an increase in Amin, suggesting reduced monolayer compactness at the air/water interface. The synthesized PILs demonstrated remarkable solubility, heat stability, and resistance to salt, rendering them well-suited for oilfield applications under challenging reservoir environments.

The aim of this study was to develop ionic liquid (IL) polymer materials incorporating enzymes that can be used as active, stable and reusable biocatalysts. To this goal, Candida rugosa lipase has been microencapsulated in surfactant aggregates formed in an IL monomer or the solution of an IL monomer/IL and then incorporated into polymer frameworks through the free radical polymerization of an IL (1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl) amide) ([veim][Tf(2)N]). The activity, stability and reusability of such IL polymer materials containing lipase were evaluated using lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl butyrate (p-PNB) as a model reaction. Lipase encapsulated within ionic liquid polymer materials remained active and exhibited excellent stability in aqueous solutions. More importantly, these biopolymer materials retained most of their activity after five reaction cycles, in which biopolymers were recovered from the reaction mixture simply by centrifugation. This study promulgates a direction toward the design of IL - an interesting class of tunable and designable solvents - based polymer materials containing biomolecules via a combination of polymer and supramolecular chemistry for diverse applications.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) with super ion diffusion kinetics have aroused considerable attention in rechargeable batteries, which are very promising to solve the problem of the slow ion diffusion kinetics in organic electrode materials. Theoretically, PILs incorporated redox groups are very suitable as anode materials to realize "superlithiation" performance, achieving high lithium storage capacity. In this study, redox pyridinium-based PILs (PILs-Py-400) have been synthesized through trimerization reactions by pyridinium ionic liquids with cyano groups under an appropriate temperature (400 °C). The positively charged skeleton, extended conjugated system, abundant micropores, and amorphous structure for PILs-Py-400 can boost the utilization efficiency of redox sites. A high capacity of 1643 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 (96.7% of the theoretical capacity) has been obtained, indicating intriguing 13 Li+ redox reactions in per repeating unit of one pyridinium ring, one triazine ring, and one methylene. Moreover, PILs-Py-400 exhibit excellent cycling stability with a capacity of around 1100 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 500 cycles, and the capacity retention is 92.2%.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are a novel class of functional polymers that combine the unique physicochemical properties of molecular ionic liquids with the outstanding mechanical characteristics of polymers [1,2]. This special mix of features might help to circumvent the key limitations of low molecular weight ionic liquids, namely, leakage and poor mechanical properties while utilizing their outstanding characteristics such as low vapor pressures, wide liquidus ranges, high thermal stability, high ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical windows. PolyILs have shown remarkable advantages when employed in electrochemical devices such as dye-sensitized solar cells, lithium batteries, actuators, field-effect transistors, light emitting electrochemical cells, and electrochromic devices, among others. Despite their promising prospects as ideal polymer electrolytes, the role of molecular structure, morphology, and polymer dynamics on charge transport in PolyILs remains poorly understood. According to classical theories, the self-diffusion and ion transport in electrolytes are controlled by structural relaxation. These approaches predict similar temperature dependence for the dc conductivity and structural dynamics. Although this prediction has been shown to hold reasonably well for low molecular weight aprotic ionic liquids, it fails for PolyILs [2,3]. In addition, the impact of morphology charge transport is not considered within the framework of these theories. The first part of this talk will focus on new insights obtained from experimental studies employing broadband dielectric spectroscopy, temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry, rheology, and scattering techniques to elucidate charge transport and structural dynamics in a systematic series of bulk polymerized ammonium- and imidazolium- based ionic liquids. Detailed analyses reveal strong decoupling of these processes in the PolyILs, implying the limitation of the classical theories in describing charge transport and molecular dynamics in these materials, in contrast to low molecular weight systems (4,5). In addition, the strong correlation observed between ionic conductivity from dielectric experiments and morphologies from scattering studies will be reviewed. In the second part of this talk, our recent results from a new approach to dielectric experiments yielding details about ion dynamics in ultrathin films of polymerized ionic liquids down to sub-5nm film thicknesses will be discussed. While the characteristic charge transport rates remain bulk-like down to about 5 nm film thicknesses, ionic-liquid/substrate interactions play an increasingly significant role in determining ion dynamics in confined polymerized ionic liquids (5). Investigation of gas permeation properties of film forming polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) based on polybenzimidazoles

VRFBs based on benzotriazole grafted polybenzimidazole / polymeric ionic liquid with high ion selectivity

Owing to their robust and tunable properties compared to molecular compounds, ionic liquids and their high molecular weight counterparts, polymeric ionic liquids, have provided suitable compounds for the development of smart materials with high physical and chemical stability and strongly stimulus-responsive characteristics. By functionalizing ionic liquids themselves or incorporating ionic liquids into traditional materials, many new kinds of stimuli-responsive materials have been developed. In this chapter, we specifically focus on the recent advances in electro-responsive electrorheological smart fluids with ionic liquids and polymeric ionic liquids as either active components or additives. The goal is to highlight the potential of incorporating ionic liquids into traditional electrorheological materials and using polymeric ionic liquids as new electrorheological active materials to overcome the problems of present electrorheological fluids for real applications.
