6 Dependence notions in reliability theory
The tail decay of the hitting probabilities on level zero in M/G/1-type Markov renewal processes (MRPs) is studied. The Markov renewal process is transformed into a Markov chain so that the problem of tail decay is reformulated in terms of the decay of the coefficients of a suitable power series. The latter problem is reduced to analyze the analyticity domain of the power series. Two numerical methods are introduced to compute the convergence radius of the latter power series. Some numerical experiments are presented that show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Comparison of Semi-Markov and Markov Processes
Conditions are given under which a semi-Markov process $Z(t)$ can be obtained from a Markov process $Y(t)$ by a time change (i.e. $Z(t) = Y(\gamma(t))$). Estimates are given for $P\{\sup_{s\leqq t} |s - \gamma(s)| > \varepsilon\}$ and the construction is used to give conditions under which a sequence of semi-Markov processes will have the same convergence properties as the corresponding sequence of Markov processes.

An explicit numerical-analytical method is demonstrated for accurate solving the Schrödinger equation in those cases when this equation reducible to a system of n coupled ordinary differential equations with singular points. Fundamental system of solutions is constructed as algebraic combinations of power series, power functions and logarithmic function in the neighbourhood of the regular singular point and as asymptotic expansions of solutions in the neighbourhood of the irregular singular point. The method is based on the calculation of recurrent sequences of constant matrices of coefficients in power series and in inverse power series in asymptotic expansions using derived recurrent relations, that makes possible to calculate solutions at any given point using only algebraic computations and elementary functions. In turn it makes possible to solve accurately the eigenvalue problem and scattering problem and to derive analytical expressions for the wavefunctions. The method is applied to calculations of energies and wavefunctions of the discrete spectrum and wave functions of the continuous spectrum of the hydrogen-like atoms and of acceptors in semiconductors.
Read moreExact distributions for reward functions on semi-Markov and Markov additive processes
The distribution theory for reward functions on semi-Markov processes has been of interest since the early 1960s. The relevant asymptotic distribution theory has been satisfactorily developed. On the other hand, it has been noticed that it is difficult to find exact distribution results which lead to the effective computation of such distributions. Note that there is no satisfactory exact distribution result for rewards accumulated over deterministic time intervals [0, t], even in the special case of continuous-time Markov chains. The present paper provides neat general results which lead to explicit closed-form expressions for the relevant Laplace transforms of general reward functions on semi-Markov and Markov additive processes.

A Markov Renewal Process (M.R.P.) is a process similar to a Markov chain, except that the time required to move from one state to another is not fixed, but is a random variable whose distribution may depend on the two states between which the transition is made. For an M.R.P. ofm (<∞) states we derive a goodness-of-fit test for a hypothetical matrix of transition probabilities. This test is similar to the test Bartlett has derived for Markov chains. We calculate the first two moments of the test statistic and modify it to fit the moments of a standard χ2. Finally, we illustrate the above procedure numeerically for a particular case of a two-state M.R.P.
Read moreRadiative properties of small particles: extension of the Penndorf model
Explicit analytical expressions to represent the radiative properties of spherical particles in the small size-parameter range were obtained. These expressions were deduced following Penndorf’s approach of expanding the Mie coefficients in power series on the size parameter. However, in opposition to Penndorf’s original work—in which some errors were found and corrected—the Mie coefficients were expanded to the eighth power of the size parameter, which results in a five-term approximation to the extinction and scattering efficiencies. Also, expressions for the evaluation of the asymmetry factor and both polarized and unpolarized phase functions were deduced and presented. The results so obtained have proved to be very accurate, even for size parameters beyond the limit of validity of the approach utilized.
Read moreII.—The Van der Waals Force between a Proton and a Hydrogen Atom
The calculation of Van der Waals forces has acquired considerable interest recently through the work of Buckingham, Knipp and others (Buckingham, 1937; Knipp, 1939). In these papers the interaction energy between two atoms is expressed as a power series in i/R, where R is the nuclear separation, and the various terms in this series are known as dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, quadrupole-quadrupole, etc… interactions. In most cases only approximate values are obtainable for the coefficients in this series, though for two hydrogen atoms in their ground states, Pauling and Beach (1935) have determined the magnitudes correct to about I in 106. In this paper we discuss the simplest possible problem of this nature, i.e. the force between a bare proton and a normal unexcited hydrogen atom. We shall show that a rigorous determination of the coefficients in the power series can be made.

At first there was the Markov property. The theory of stochastic processes, which can be considered as an exten- sion of probability theory, allows the modeling of the evolution of systems through the time. It cannot be properly understood just as pure mathemat- ics, separated from the body of experience and examples that have brought it to life. The theory of stochastic processes entered a period of intensive develop- ment, which is not finished yet, when the idea of the Markov property was brought in. Not even a serious study of the renewal processes is possible without using the strong tool of Markov processes. The modern theory of Markov processes has its origins in the studies by A. A: Markov (1856-1922) of sequences of experiments connected in a chain and in the attempts to describe mathematically the physical phenomenon known as Brownian mo- tion. Later, many generalizations (in fact all kinds of weakenings of the Markov property) of Markov type stochastic processes were proposed. Some of them have led to new classes of stochastic processes and useful applications. Let us mention some of them: systems with complete connections [90, 91, 45, 86]; K-dependent Markov processes [44]; semi-Markov processes, and so forth. The semi-Markov processes generalize the renewal processes as well as the Markov jump processes and have numerous applications, especially in relia- bility.

The central limit theorem for additive functionals of Markov and semi-Markov processes
One presents the results obtained recently by the collaborators of the Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, regarding limit theorems for additive functionals of Markov and semi-Markov processes. One makes use of the theory of inversion of singularly perturbed semigroups of operators in the phase extension scheme and of the methods of asymptotic analysis of singularly perturbed Markov renewal equations.
Read moreStochastic Systems with Averaging in the Scheme of Diffusion Approximation
We propose a system approach to the asymptotic analysis of stochastic systems in the scheme of series with averaging and diffusion approximation. Stochastic systems are defined by Markov processes with locally independent increments in a Euclidean space with random switchings that are described by jump Markov and semi-Markov processes. We use the asymptotic analysis of Markov and semi-Markov random evolutions. We construct the diffusion approximation using the asymptotic decomposition of generating operators and solutions of problems of singular perturbation for reducibly inverse operators.

Reversion of power series and the extended Raney coefficients
In direct as well as diagonal reversion of a system of power series, the reversion coefficients may be expressed as polynomials in the coefficients of the original power series. These polynomials have coefficients which are natural numbers (Raney coefficients). We provide a combinatorial interpretation for Raney coefficients. Specifically, each such coefficient counts a certain collection of ordered colored trees. We also provide a simple determinantal formula for Raney coefficients which involves multinomial coefficients.
Read moreRemarks on the Coefficient Ring of Quaternionic Oriented Cohomology Theories
Let h* be a complex (or real) oriented cohomology theory. It has recently been observed that the of h* plays a very important role in such a theory. Above all, D. Quillen [6] showed that the formal group FU of the complex cobordism theory MU* ( ) is isomorphic to the Lazard universal formal group, and its coefficients generate the ground ring MU* (pt). Unfortunately, in the case of quaternionic oriented cohomology theory (see § 2), there exists no such formal group, since the tensor product of quaternionic line bundles does not yield a quaternionic bundle. This situation makes it difficult, for example, to produce enough generators of MSp*(pt). However there are some substitutes for the formal group. In particular, using the total Pontrjagin class of a certain quaternionic vector bundle 2C (see § 3), N. Ja. Gozman [5] defined a subring A of MU* (pt) which is contained in the image of the forgetful homomorphism (p: MSp* (pt}-*MU*(pt). In this paper, we will generalize his approach to arbitrary quaternionic oriented cohomology theory 7i*, and define a subring Ah of h* (pt) which is generated by the coefficients of certain power series. Then it will be shown that
