A review of monitoring systems of pavement condition in paved and unpaved roads

In Ethiopia the failure of roads are before handover period. Most roads found in Ethiopia are flexible pavements. Nowadays, the failure of surface of flexible pavement roads are common before the expected design period. For the example Bako-Nekemte road/ has become a critical issue in our country. The most common parameters that cause stress, strain and deflection of the roads are loads and pressures that come from vehicles. Moreover, modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio and thickness of each layer needs to be characterized. Further, the load magnitude, contact pressure (or load radius) and location are defined for each load (wheel) considered. Finite element method (FEM) is a numerical analysis technique to obtain the stress-strain and deflection of each pavement layers. Analytical method usually uses layers thickness, loads, elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the pavement materials as design parameters. The objective of this research was to study the sensitivity of the road parameters in analyzing the major causes of failure in asphalt pavement layers fatigue cracking and rutting deformation which came due to the critical tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt layer and the critical compressive strains on the top of subgrade using the finite element method by relating the standard specification of ERA and laboratory test result. This thesis studied the analysis of stress-strain and deflection of flexible pavements using Everstress finite element method. The Ever stress program will take into account any stress dependent stiffness characteristics. This thesis dealt with ways to reduce deflections by varying the design configuration, such as increasing the HMA modulus, the base modulus, sub base modulus, the subgrade modulus and increasing thickness of each layers. Based on type of materials to use the value of elastic modulus and poison’s ratio are various in each layers, in layer 1 is varied from 1500 to 3500 MPa, in layer 2 is varied from 200 to 1000MPa, in layer 3 is varied from 100 to 250 MPa and in layer 4 is varied from 20MPa to 150MPa.

Abstract. Mobile Mapping (MM) has gained significant importance in the realm of high-resolution data acquisition techniques. MM is able to record georeferenced street-level data in a continuous (laser scanners) and/or discrete (cameras) fashion. MM’s georeferencing relies on a conjunction of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and optionally on odometry sensors. While this technique does not pose a problem for absolute positioning in open areas, its reliability and accuracy may be diminished in urban areas where high-rise buildings and other tall objects can obstruct the direct line-of-sight between the satellite and the receiver unit. Consequently, multipath measurements or complete signal outages impede the MM platform’s localisation and may affect the accurate georeferencing of collected data. This paper presents a technique to recover correct orientation parameters for MM imaging platforms by utilising aerial images as an external georeferencing source. This is achieved by a fully automatic registration strategy which takes into account the overall differences between aerial and MM data, such as scale, illumination, perspective and content. Based on these correspondences, MM data can be verified and/or corrected by using an adjustment solution. The registration strategy is discussed and results in a success rate of about 95 %.

With increased emphasis on public accountability and program evaluation, the need for effectiveness measures to indicate the extent to which an agency's goals and objectives are being met is increasingly apparent. A research study was undertaken to establish and implement a procedure for monitoring the effectiveness of transportation services in Kentucky. Quantitative data for many of the effectiveness measures were obtainable only through responses from the public. Surveys of licensed drivers and bus riders were selected as data sources. This report addresses the procedures and results of the two surveys. Responses were received from 35.5 percent of the 10,000 licensed drivers who were sent questionnaires and 26.0 percent of the 4,560 bus riders. Results from the surveys were summarized into the following areas: (l) survey response, (2) personal information, (3) satisfaction with transportation services, (4) inadequate transportation services, (5) drivers' complaints and compliments, (6) future government spending for transportation, (7) problems getting to various destinations, (8) use of other modes of transportation, (9) opinions on laws or government regulations, and (10) bus rider survey.

This article analyzes problems of determining the shortest path and optimal route amongst the given stoppages. The model of the problem is presented as a directional graph, where nodes are pickup points (termed as stoppage point in database) and crossings outside stoppage points and edges are roads among stoppage points and crossings. Each node has some information attached to it: stoppageId, stoppageName, latitude, longitude and numberOfPassengers of the stop, maintenance organizations, and mark(s) of the crossing(s). All pickup points are connected by roads. These roads are considered as the edges of the graph. Edges also have information attached to it: roadId, source, destination, distance, time etc.We have selected Floyd Warshall algorithm to nd the shortest path between two stoppages. This algorithm works in two stages: in rst stage, it nds the shortest path between all stoppages, and in second stage it nds optimized route to visit some of these stoppages. The solution is displayed in the form of shortest distance and time between two locations. The program is written in java language. It uses 3 tables as input from database : nodes, vehicle details and road. This paper gives implementation outcome of Floyd Warshall algorithm to solve the all pairs shortestpath problem for directed road graph system. We have considered an example of a map of Pune. Introduction Now days in the current scenario companies and schools provide transportation facilities to their employees and students from their organizations to their respective houses and vice versa. The purpose of this article is to present an interface between a traveling agency and its traveller so that, the subscribers can keep a track of the service they have subscribed.A key problem in public conveyance system is the computation of shortest paths between di erent locations for a given region. Sometimes this computation has to be done in real time. During the literature survey we found how di cult it is to nd the shortest path covering all pickup points and how to allocate available transport vehicles to these speci c routes manually. There is always a need to nd optimal path for their operational viability. So, just the idea that our system will help in e cient allocation of vehicles and shortest route creation to save time and fuel consumption. The system scope is to design such system for a small area of the city.

This paper draws on the author’s recent experiences as Environmental and Social Specialist on an ADB road upgrading and maintenance project in four provinces along the Highlands Highway,1 as well as reports on numerous recent and ongoing road projects in several parts of the country. The emphasis is on the Highlands region, but all the evidence indicates that the issues canvassed here apply throughout Papua New Guinea. By and large villagers, townspeople, businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians throughout Papua New Guinea are keen to see new roads built and existing roads improved, or at least maintained properly. Despite this enthusiasm for roads, for a host of reasons broached in this paper it is becoming increasingly difficult to implement road and bridge construction and improvement works throughout the country. The issues are broadly those of governance, which, following UNDP (1997) I take to mean:

Le xington, in central Kentucky, is the second largest city in the state. Local government is by a mayor and council of elected representatives from twelve districts and three at-large representatives. The Department of Public Works headed by a Commissioner, who reports to the mayor and city-county council, administers the streets and roads system. The street and road network in Lexington consists of approximately 720 centerline miles. Approximately 100 miles are rural in nature and 620 miles are urban. Approximately 95 percent are bituminous surfaced roads; a majority of the remainder is constructed of portland cement concrete. Increasing costs for constructing and maintaining the street and road network was a stimulus to implement a systematic pavement and road surface management system. Available alternatives were reviewed, and it was decided to maximize in-house resources of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Meetings with public works officials were used to establish criteria for implementation of a management program: (a) program for visual condition survey of pavements, (b) procedure(s) to determine structural deficiencies for critical pavements identified in the visual condition survey, and (c) utilization of the above information to estimate rehabilitation strategies and their associated costs. The paper describes and documents three phases of implementation of a pavement and road surface management system. Phase I included development of a system­ wide inventory of pavements and a pavement condition rating system for both flexible and rigid pavements. Phase II dealt with the modifications to a microcomputer program to process pavement condition ratings for ranking pavements on the basis of need and also to estimate pavement maintenance and rehabilitation costs. Phase III included administrative and training activities necessary for implementation of the pavement management program. Training generally addressed three areas: (1) collection of pavement condition and distress information, (2) operation of the microcomputer program for data processing and analyses, and (3) interpretation and utilization of results of the analyses, Finally, the paper describes current research and development relating to refinements and modifications for the Lexington situation.

Traditionally, serviceability surveys are conducted periodically through visual inspection of pavements in order to identify and classify any existing distress. Though such ratings may be subjective in nature, they are very useful for project level surveys or when technical or funding limitations arise. Many authorities and organisations have devised methods and equipment to objectively measure pavement surface conditions. The latest developments in this field include the use of laser scanners and video imaging technologies. Such techniques allow for determining the geometric characteristics of the distress and its position in an 'absolute' reference system, taking into account the precision of the measurements performed. A standardised index obtained by combining various types of distress is useful when drafting priority maintenance lists for specific road sections. A semi-automatic method has been tested on various sites and validated by comparing the results obtained with those from standard manual calculation of the index.

One of the major obstacles in the process of national development, is the disruption in regional balance construct. As has been noted in some studies the existence of regional inequity leads to domination of some regions to surrounding regions and causing political and economic challenges in developing countries. And given that transportation is one of the components of region, undoubtedly equity in transportation infrastructure and quality services both for passenger and freight is one of the factors affecting the balance construct between regions.Socio-economic impacts of transportation are amongst the most important issues in transportation planning and appropriate transportation planning is the key to sound regional development. One of the major planning issues is the transportation equity. Inequity of transportation, itself leads to many other inequities and it is highly essential to consider that in the plans and policies regarding transportation in the country. The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate and make a comparison of road transportation indicators among the provinces of Iran. For this purpose, the relative level of transportation development in different provinces was determined using taxonomy method. Nine indicators provided by Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization were used to carry out analyses. The data were analyzed and described by utilizing from SPSS and GIS Soft wares. The outcomes indicate relative favorable development status in the region consisted of Tehran, Alborz and Qom provinces and unfavorable development of transportation status, especially in the Southeast region. In fact it was revealed that vertical equity in the distribution of infrastructure and services among provinces of Iran is not considered enough. This may be the result of horizontal equity or internal and external factors affecting the performance of the provinces or both.

Mobile mapping, a technology that integrates digital imaging with direct georeferencing, has developed rapidly. This article provides an overview of the development and current state of digital mobile mapping, emphasising the rapid development of this field from academic research to a commercially viable industry. The analysis of cited papers contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the market landscape. The article reviews mobile and handheld scanners. The introduction highlights the significant impact of mobile mapping systems on geospatial technologies, enabled by advancements in photogrammetry, computer vision, and robotics. Low-cost survey sensors with diverse specifications have further enhanced the systems and their applications, making mobile mapping more flexible and cost-effective. The article acknowledges the absence of a single widely adopted mobile mapping standard for a system and it aims to present a comprehensive meta-review of sensor suites and associated mobile mapping systems. The article presents studies demonstrating the accuracy achieved by scientists using mobile mapping systems, highlighting the role of sensors like LiDAR, cameras, and GNSS receivers. An analysis of the specifications of mobile mapping systems reveals diverse possibilities, including the integration of LiDAR and cameras or the limitation to one type of data acquisition. Manufacturers have focused on enhancing platform connectivity to various mobile mechanisms, expanding adaptability in challenging conditions. The article concludes with future trends, highlighting the democratisation of laser scanners, refinement of mobile and airborne scanning platforms, the ubiquity of terrestrial laser scanners, integration with complementary technologies, and advancements in development of airborne scanning systems. It predicts advancements in sensor technologies, positioning systems, data processing techniques, and integration with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. The future of mobile mapping technology entails continuous innovation and refinement to create more accurate, efficient, and versatile systems. What used to be a topic of academic study, has become a commercially viable industry.

The mobile 3D mapping systems (MMS) and the integration with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) represent an innovative and efficient approach to modern topography. It is recommended and useful for infrastructure analysis and urban planning. This modern technology provides accurate, fast, and detailed data, facilitating well-informed decision-making and contributing to the development of sustainable infrastructure in the 21st century. The purpose of this research was to use a mobile mapping system for land surveying measurement of an urban area, independent of pre-established ground control points. On the other hand, the research is supposed to demonstrate the usefulness of kinematic trajectory, digital imaging, and laser scanning in acquiring, storing, and processing point cloud data. This paper shows an affordable method and a modern scanning instrument used for mobile mapping scanning, to create a georeferenced point cloud (PC). The obtained result has centimetric precision of georeferenced point cloud data, even if the average speed of the car was about 30km/h. The trajectory adjustment with static GNSS measurements increases the accuracy of ground control points (GCPs) up to ±5cm for horizontal positioning and vertical positioning. Although this study was carried out while the system was mounted on a car the result followed the national accuracy requirements for land surveying and cadastre fields. In other words, the mobile mapping system is a faster and cost-effective in time alternative to static laser scanning and it is important to continue to explore and adopt these technological solutions to face the future challenges in the field of urban development and infrastructure.

In this paper, assessment and evaluation of vehicle low frequency interior noise, infrasound closer to the threshold of hearing and their potential effects on human health are presented. The vehicle interior noise of off-road and mid-size vehicles was measured while driving on three different asphalt road surfaces. The results indicate that the vehicle acoustic comfort factor (VACF) should be at lower level for a relatively high acoustical comfort. Furthermore, at constant vehicle speed, the kurtosis parameter value is greater in high roughness road surface and is proportional to vehicle speed for every kind of road surface. Kurtosis has inverse effect on the VACF value. The VACF for road surface with higher roughness is lesser than the VACF for smoother road surface at same vehicle speeds.

Transportation is an important part of human life. Transportation is the driving force for socio-economic activities that must be accessible to all people. Transportation access is the heart of the development of an area, if transportation access is easy then the development of an area is easier to achieve. One of the most popular means of transportation in Indonesia and being a mass transportation that is very effective for human and goods mobilization is the train. So that the existence of train access can be a determining factor and support the accessibility of an area. This research was conducted to determine the role of trains in supporting the accessibility of the region. Research data collection was carried out by conducting observations, interviews, and literature reviews. Based on the results of the study it was found that since the first time it was built by the Dutch East Indies government in 1864, 26 km in the Kemijen Tanggung area currently has 25,361 employees. The vision is to become the best rail service provider that focuses on customer service and meets stakeholder expectations. Good and smooth transportation growth is a collaboration between three supporting forces in the form of good spatial planning, policies or regulations in the field of road network infrastructure and multi-modal transport, road traffic behavior and law enforcement. Urban and suburban highways account for less than three percent of road miles in metropolitan areas, yet they carry more than one third of all vehicle miles traveled in our nation's cities and suburbs. As Congress tackles reauthorization of the nation's transportation law, the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), these interstates, freeways, and expressways - the vital core of the country's road network - are crumbling. The main reason is that each year state departments of transportation (DOTs) divert billions of dollars available for road repair to the construction of new highways, typically on the suburban fringe. Since the enactment of ISTEA, money available for highway repair that was instead spent on new highway construction in major metropolitan areas alone could have resurfaced almost 5,000 mi (8,045 km) of existing urban highway - repairing every mile of urban highway currently in poor or mediocre condition. Because fixing a highway in poor condition can cost ten times more than routine maintenance of roads in fair or better condition, diverting repair money to new construction further increases long-term road repair costs. It also increases maintenance costs - to the tune of billions of dollars each year - for drivers whose cars are battered by failing roads. Further supporting statistics are presented in this report, along with recommendations for amending and strengthening ISTEA.
