Construction projects in mineral processing plants in South Africa have high failure rates despite the availability of many risk management processes, tools and practices to project managers. This industry application paper investigates the effectiveness of risk management in mineral processing projects. The mining and mineral processing industry is one of the world's most uncertain and hazardous industries and in recent years South Africa has experienced its fair share of economic, political and industrial challenges. Despite these challenges, a recent survey revealed that many African mining executives remain focused on the importance of securing new projects to ensure future production and growth. These new projects include new and complex technologies aimed at increasing productivity and efficiencies in the extraction and processing of minerals. South African mining industry risks unique to the region include knowledge and skills shortage, quality of education, prevalence of HIV/AIDS, power outages, political involvement and increased talks on nationalization, insufficient expenditure on R&D projects and increased unionisation. The effective management of risks is essential for project performance especially in this particular industry, due to significant investments required as well as the combination of both construction and mining/mineral processing risks involved. The study uses qualitative research methods to collect and analyse data from project management practitioners involved in construction projects in mineral processing plants. Operational, financial, legal and compliance, political and SHE risks are identified as major risks that need to be effectively managed to reduce project failure. The actions and behaviours of leaders and followers in projects are found to precipitate project failure. These include limited risk knowledge and competence, complacency and poor collaboration with team members. Risk management processes are also noted as a problem as they tend to be complex and impractical. Finally, the lack of comprehensive application of formal risk management along all the stages of the project life cycle is found to have a negative effect on risk management. The study recommends the development of a risk management culture, project team training and the reassessment of the effectiveness of currently used risk management tools in order to improve project success rate.

Risk control and management are becoming increasingly important in many organisational operations. It goes beyond the business sector to include security organisations like police departments. The fact that police officers engage in a widerange of daily activities that expose them to a variety of potentially hazardous situations Police risk management includes both physical and financial aspects. Risk identification is the first step in the risk management process, followed by risk analysis, risk evaluation, and risk treatment. According to the literature, the Dubai Police Department has no framework in place to fully manage risks and evaluate the effectiveness of police operations. Early warning systems are critical for detecting potential severe RM because police departments must rely on them to manage risks and keep track of any potential new risks. As a result, the UAE police department's risk management strategy was investigated in this paper. It classified the data collection process using exploratory factor analysis, which wasa quantitative approach. A self-administered survey yielded 381 valid questionnaires from Dubai Police Department officers. The study's findings revealed that risk identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation, and risk response are the four fundamental steps of effective risk management. The Crobach Alpha test was used to assess the consistency and reliability of the data, and the result was 0.814, indicating that the data is suitable for use. Only one of the twenty indicators, which were divided into four groups for risk management, was weak according to outliers and communalities tests. The risk management process was accurately described by another 20 factors. Total variance extraction yielded a rate of 57.130 percent, which was higher than the required 50%. As a result, the risk management procedure investigated in this study may be useful for effectively managing risks in the UAE police force.

The implications of the results are related to stakeholder management, sustainability, and flexibility during the execution of large-scale project risks.

Introduction: Managing risks means, in the case of risks with negative effects, having them under control to mitigate or eliminate them, if possible, or in the case of risks with positive effects, turning them into opportunities. The Adolfo Lutz Institute (IAL) establishes documents and implements and maintains a management system in accordance with option A of ISO/IEC 17025: 2017. Thus, risk management is one of the requirements to be met. In order to fulfill this requirement, the IAL started the implementation of the risk management process using the Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) tool. As the methodology was considered complex by the collaborators, this tool was abandoned and only the brainstorming was used for the identification step, and the probability and impact analysis at the risk analysis for the assessment stage. Objective: To assess the level of implementation of the risk management process in the IAL and identify the main difficulties involved in this process. Method: 74 risk matrix forms filled out by the various sectors of the institution were analyzed. Results: There was a 76.3% adherence to the implementation of risk management and the main difficulties encountered in the risk management process were: identification of the risks, including identification of risks with positive effects, selection of an indicator associated with risk, and proposal of actions to treat risks. Conclusions: To implement the risk management process, the use of simpler tools should be recommended when the team maturity level is still low or intermediate. Another point to be considered for the successful implementation of this process is strengthening of the understanding of risks by everyone in the organization. In IAL, the risk management process is in the risk monitoring phase; the next step is to review the risk mapping initially done.

This research discusses the risk management process applied at Islamic State Universities with a case study at UIN Walisongo Semarang. The research seeks to describe and analyze the risk management process by using interviews and documentation techniques. The analyzed data used was an interactive model, including data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The result showed that risk management has been well running at UIN Walisongo Semarangan, even though there is no risk management committee, and it is still attached to the Internal Supervisory Unit. The risk management process used the AS/NZS 31000:2009 standard which consists of the process of establishing context, risk identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation, risk handling, monitoring and review, and communication and consultation. If it is assosiated to the reputation of higher education, UIN Walisongo risk management has prepared anticipatory steps related to the reputation of the institution. These steps are damage control, reputational risk assessment, and management academic community control.

Every World Cup is surrounded by a set of diverse, unpredictable and unique risks that must be mitigated, eliminated or identified. It examines World Cup risk and security management processes. Particularly, there is a pressing need for future research on the risk management of Women's World Cups and the World Cups below senior level.

Over the last decade, the ideas, concepts and tools of risk management have colonised the way that organisations frame potential adverse outcomes associated with their activities. Intended as a means of optimising the tolerance, rather than elimination, of adverse organisational outcomes, risk management has been promoted as a means of challenging organisational practice, particularly in the context of heightened accountability pressures that can readily make organisations risk averse. Relatively little attention, however, has been paid to the extent to which risk ideas are able to challenge traditional organisational ways of understanding and responding to adverse outcomes. In this article, therefore, we examine the implementation of risk management practices in two contrasting organisational contexts; the UK Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the English university sector. Our studies suggest that risk management processes can be readily filtered and reinterpreted through a series of ideological, methodological and organisational mechanisms to reflect and reinforce organisational understandings and practices. We build on this analysis to point to what might tentatively be termed ‘Risk Organizations’, which are distinctive, at least in principle, by the way in which they seek to identify, but also come to terms with, failure. As such, rather than providing a means of organisational challenge, the systematic application of risk management practices tends to act as a conservative force of organisational continuity.

Thus, it can be noted that no risk management system can exist without a structured risk model that currently poses a threat. Analysis of potential and known risks is a very important area in planning the activities of the enterprise. Assessing risks, taking into account their likely effects on the state of the enterprise, and applying methods to minimize them is very important to ensure the effective operation of economic entities. In addition, it is important to add that risks are present in any field of activity. That is why the topic of risks is relevant for both economists and business leaders and managers. In modern economic conditions, the importance of the risk category for domestic enterprises is growing. The state of uncertainty makes it almost impossible to avoid risk. However, this does not mean that you should look for solutions in which the result is known in advance - they are usually ineffective. It is important for the company to have the ability to anticipate risk, critically assess its size, immediately plan preventive measures and do not exceed acceptable limits. Risk identification is a very important step in the risk management process. The relevance of effective consideration of possible risks in the course of the enterprise is beyond doubt, given that risk becomes an integral part of the strategy and tactics of economic policy of most enterprises. The problem of risk management is extremely broad and important, because it arises in a variety of areas of human activity. Moreover, the content of risk is determined depending on the scope in different ways. In the course of the enterprise there are a variety of risk situations. Analysis of the theoretical foundations of risk management allows you to identify and select those methods and stages of the risk management process that would allow the most effective work with them. Risk management in business is based on risk analysis and finding tools to help influence them. The risk management system is impossible without a structural model, the factors of which, in turn, will depend on the specifics of business. Risks are inherent in any activity and any business entity.

Risk management is an integral part of the organizational process effected by an entity's management and personnel. It is designed to identify and address risks and to provide reasonable assurance in pursuit of the entity's mission. Risk management is to an organization’s strategic management as it raises the probability of success, and reduces both the probability of failure and the uncertainty of achieving the organization’s overall objectives. This study is set to ascertain the role of Internal Audit in risk identification, analysis and management in a Public University in Ghana. This single case study is situated at University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. The research goes beyond the evidence in the public domain and includes questionnaire and interview of key personnel for data collection. The research revealed that, Internal Audit function plays an important role in making risk management at UMaT effective by carrying out activities such as pre-audit, revenue checking, updating procedures, provision of recommendations, and ensuring policies and procedures are complied. These go a long way to contribute to the achievement of the University objectives. Financial risk is found to be the major risk that threatens the operations of the University. The questionnaire administration indicated more than 77% of respondents agreed that the Internal Audit helps to reduce risk, conducts regular evaluation and review of risk, has qualified staff and management considers recommendations made by the unit as valuable. Respondents were, however, critical regarding professional training of staff, low percentages of respondents (30% and below) agreed to assertions in areas such as professional training of staff, adequate logistics and staff strength. It is recommended that there should be a documented risk management policy and when possible size of the Internal Audit staff should be increased to enable wider coverage of audit activity within the University be carried within the shortest possible time to ensure timeliness and relevance. In addition, staff should be encouraged to attend professional training periodically. Project processes are affected by risks in many ways, and this is particularly true in today's highly competitive world. Construction projects usually take much longer than typical projects in other sectors. In this sector, it is important to follow some kind of standardised risk management process. There is much literature on different approaches to project risk management, and this paper reviews the most prominent sources that suggest procedures that are widely used in practice. Nevertheless, standard risk management still faces some shortcomings, and professionals call for a more sophisticated solution. This research aims to expand the general risk management process based on the frameworks of the prestigious stand-ardisation institutions and associations (mainly on Project Management Institute's (PMI's) risk management standard considering the approaches of Institute of Risk Management (IRM), National Forum for Risk Management in the Public Sector (ALARM), Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (AIRMIC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO), as well as Association for Project Management (APM)). The suggested two new processes are justified by in-depth interviews conducted with interviewees working on large and complex construction projects, and are supported by a thorough literature review. The novelty of the research is that these two processes added to the standard processes, namely, risk analysis verification and validation and risk plan experimentation. The research expectedly improves the risk management process in the construction sector and emphasises the need to clearly articulate and communicate the organisation's risk appetite and the necessity for risk management training to employees. Therefore, the research reconfirms the concept of project risk management by the standards, and justifies the proposed new phases.

In modern military operations, nations participate as members of a coalition. In order to realize a rapid command and control cycle, the armed forces of one nation need to establish communication links between their information system and that of other members of the coalition. These interconnections inevitably introduce risks, and these risks need to be managed. However, because each nation uses its own risk management methodology and tools, integrating the results of the risk assessment performed by a partner in the coalition with whom information is exchanged, into one's own risk management process, remains a periodically performed, manual operation. In this paper we will first discuss risk management approaches in a single organization, and show why it is important to adopt a continuous risk management approach. Next we will present a concept for realizing this continuous risk management in a coalition environment.

Both risk analysis and risk management are required for answering today's challenging construction project demands. The targeted result of combining risk analysis with risk management is a successful project, which satisfies the expectations of its stakeholders. This paper aims to assist geotechnical professionals with extending from traditional risk analysis towards risk management, by presenting some experiences and guidelines. These are derived from geotechnical practice and ongoing geotechnical risk management research, which actually takes place in The Netherlands. It also integrates professional experiences from a number of other countries, such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa. The paper starts by defining and describing the concepts of risk analysis and risk management, while stressing that both complement each other. Risk analysis and risk management are blended in one geotechnical risk management framework: the GeoQ risk management process. The anticipated (financial) benefits of applying risk management are also highlighted. Next, some common barriers are presented, which may prevent geotechnical professionals from extending their activities to risk management. These barriers can be lowered, and under certain circumstances can even be eliminated. However, this will require the professional's motivation to apply risk management and the availability of at least some risk management tools. In addition, it is likely that some kind of training will be needed for gaining the attitude and skills for applying risk management. Non-geotechnical decision makers turn up in any construction project and they ultimately determine the amount of resources, such as money and time, to be allocated to geotechnical activities. By gaining risk management skills, in addition to in-depth geotechnical expertise, geotechnical professionals may become even better positioned to effectively communicate and implement their precious geotechnical expertise in any construction project.

This study is about project risk management tools. The aim has been to identify which tools have the greatest potential for contribution to risk management processes in the Norwegian oil and gas industry, and which factors contribute to efficient risk management. Empirical data from the Norwegian industry have been gathered using a questionnaire. The results revealed strong relationships between project system complexity, average tool score and risk management contribution. Furthermore, the results of the analysis show that some of the previous recommendations of tools for project risk management may have been based on a restricted set of determinants. On the other hand, similarities are also found with previous research in terms of the highest ranked tools based on perceived contribution to the risk management performance. Compared to the previous findings, this study indicates that a new measure for project management performance is needed, and that the recommendation of tools based on the risk management contribution index may be flawed. Nevertheless, it is concluded that several of the recommended tools are of great value across industries.
