An Approach for Supervising the Security Threats using Software Defined Networks

Software-defined networking (SDN) is an emerging network architecture that decouples the control plane from the data plane, enabling centralized programmability and management of networks. While SDN offers benefits like flexibility, scalability, and automation, it also introduces new security vulnerabilities. This literature review analyzes the current state of research on SDN security in three key domains – Internet of Things (IoT) environments, cloud computing, and traditional enterprise networks. A systematic review methodology was followed to search, select, and review 53 relevant studies published in the past 5 years. The analysis focuses on identifying common SDN threat vectors, security solutions proposed leveraging SDN programmability and evaluating their effectiveness based on results from simulations, testbed experiments, and initial real-world implementations. Key findings of the review include lack of authentication, susceptibility to DDoS attacks, and flow rule conflicts as major security issues in SDN across domains. Dynamic traffic monitoring, access control, policy orchestration, and virtualized security functions are commonly proposed techniques to enhance SDN security. However, limitations exist in robustness testing at scale, emerging paradigms like fog computing, and quantitatively comparing SDN security with legacy networks. As SDN adoption expands, focused efforts are needed to address these research gaps through innovations in data-driven security, coordinated security policy, and emphasizing SDN controller security. This review provides valuable insights into the current state of SDN security research and informs future efforts needed in this important area

In recent years, SDN has evolved as a promising alternative to the traditional networking paradigm. This is because the traditional network is decentralized, making it difficult to manage and provide trouble-shooting. SDN is an approach to network management whereby the forwarding process of the data plane (DP) is disassociated from the control plane (CP). The CP is responsible for decision-making. SDN centrally control the network infrastructure and make it programmable. Communication between the two planes (data and control) is carried out by the OpenFlow (OF) protocol. The deployment of SDN was initiated by Mr. Matrin Casado and his research team in 2008. The original projects developed at Stanford University were SANE and ETHANE. Security reports and web articles suggest that SDN (Software Defined Network) has the caliber to defend DDoS attacks. The year 2017 has been declared as the year of SDN adaption and DDoS mitigation. The initial effort in the direction of compiling the detection and mitigation approaches has been done in (Dayal et al., 2016). Recently a similar effort has been done in (Rochak et al., 2019). The CP of SDN has a complete visibility of the network which makes traffic monitoring feasible. Moreover, SDN open flow switches contain forwarding logic only; decision-making capability is softwarized at 58controller. This helps the controller to instruct and configure the switches with new flow rules which the switches follow. This facilitates the network admins to detect and mitigate these attacks easily. SDN have gained momentum among the possible solutions of DDoS attacks due to its decentralized nature of network management, but solutions come with its repercussions. The centralization and open architecture framework makes SDN difficult for widespread adaptation. The chapter begins with an introduction to DDoS attacks and its classification such as volumetric attack, protocol exploitation attack and application attack. In the next section, we discuss the possible DDoS attacks over SDN framework. We have categorized the vulnerability into three classes: DDoS attack on data, control, and application planes (APs). The DDoS attack on DP can further be classified into TCAM exhaustion, switch DDoS, ICMP flood, TCP flood, TCP_SYN flood, etc. We would discuss Resource depletion, OF bandwidth exhaustion, amplification attacks in DDoS attack over CP. HTTP flooding and Slowloris attack has been discussed in DDoS attack over AP. The next section highlights the working of attack tools used in performing DDoS attacks. Various DDoS tools have been widely exploited to render DDoS attacks and facilitate attackers to carry out dangerous attack on target; here target may be network resources, server resources, or applications. The fourth section focuses on the state-of-the-art for detection and mitigation approaches of DDoS attacks. Detection approaches are classified into statistical, policy, and machine learning-based approaches. DDoS mitigation OF switches, including Alcatel Lucent’s OmniSwitch, Brocade’s MLXe series routers, and applications such as DefensePro by Radware that are available in market; also depend on the statistical threshold to detect the DDoS attack. In addition, this section also incorporates a brief analysis of the previous defense mechanism of the last 10 years and analyzes and compares the products of different security vendors like Cloudflare, Radware, Akamai, Arbor, Nexusguard, etc.

Software-defined network (SDN) radically changes the network architecture by decoupling the network logic from the underlying forwarding devices. This architectural change rejuvenates the network-layer granting centralized management and reprogrammability of the networks. From a security perspective, SDN separates security concerns into control and data plane, and this architectural recomposition brings up exciting opportunities and challenges. The overall perception is that SDN capabilities will ultimately result in improved security. However, in its raw form, SDN could potentially make networks more vulnerable to attacks and harder to protect. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of SDN security domain while focusing on its data plane, which is one of the least explored but most critical aspects in securing this technology. We review the most recent enhancements in SDNs, identify the main vulnerabilities of SDNs, and provide a novel attack taxonomy for SDNs. Thereafter, we provide a comprehensive analysis of challenges involved in protecting SDN data plane and control plane and provide an in-depth look into available solutions with respect to the identified threats and identify their limitations. To highlight the importance of securing the SDN platform, we also review the numerous security services built on top of this technology. We conclude the paper by offering future research directions.

Software Defined Network (SDN) Technology made tremendous changes in networking field by controlling the hardware with remote software by decoupling data plane and control plane. The focus here is on the controller which is part of control plane. A controller is a central part of SDN; it is an intermediary between Data plane and Forwarding plane. It takes prime place in SDN architecture like Operating System in Computers. SDN Controller is a software which directs the packets using flow rules and also contains statistical information of network. The controller orchestrates the networking devices such as switches and routers by channelizing the packets. SDN controller has different flavor based on the commercial requirement achieved by including new pluggable module. This paper discusses some of the SDN Controller with their feature; the controllers are POX, NOX, Floodlight, ODL, Open Contrail. This paper also compares the characteristic of centralized and distributed controller by focusing on performance, bandwidth and round-trip time of Floodlight and Open Daylight (ODL) controller. The simulation is conducted using Mininet.

Popularity of Software Defined Network (SDN) technology is spreading rapidly and corporate networks are deploying to take advantages of its features. Control & Data planes are segregated in SDN and simple forwarding devices enabled with OpenFlow protocol is used to forward data planes. The responsibility of control planes are taken by controller into SDN network. The data packets are generated by source host and forwarded to destination host by seeing destination address of such packet without validating source host address. Flow of data packets is controlled by controller setting up required flow entries into flow table of forwarding devices. Initially forwarding devices do not have any security & control and they are not able to forward traffic generated by attached hosts. Data packets of attached hosts are sent to the controller by forwarding devices for generation of control packets and setup necessary flow entries into device flow table. Source IP spoofed attacks may be setup by attacker in this situation and perform different type of attacks. There are some techniques for prevention and mitigation from such attacks. In this study, we offer an analysis of available source address validation techniques for SDN environment. The study discussed various features, limitations and gaps of source address validation solutions and provided various areas in SDN Security for future research.

Cyber attacks are a major concern for network administrators as the occurrences of such events are continuously increasing on the Internet. Software-defined networks (SDN) enable many management applications, but they may also become targets for attackers. Due to the separation of the data plane and the control plane, the controller appears as a new element in SDN networks, allowing centralized control of the network, becoming a strategic target in carrying out an attack. According to reports generated by security labs, the frequency of the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks has seen an increase in recent years, characterizing a major threat to the SDN. However, few research papers address the prevention of DDoS attacks on SDN. Therefore, this work presents a Systematic Mapping of Literature, aiming at identifying, classifying, and thus disseminating current research studies that propose techniques and methods for preventing DDoS attacks in SDN. When answering these questions, it was determined that the SDN controller was vulnerable to possible DDoS attacks. No prevention methods were found in the literature for the first phase of the attack (when attackers try to deceive users and infect the host). Therefore, the security of software-defined networks still needs improvement over DDoS attacks, despite the evident risk of an attack targeting the SDN controller.

Software-defined networking (SDN) attracts the attention of the research community in recent years, as evidenced by a large number of survey and review papers. The architecture of SDN clearly recognizes three planes: application, control, and data plane. The application plane executes network applications; control plane regulates the rules for the entire network based on the requests generated by network applications; and based on the set rules, the controller configures the switches in the data plane. The role of the switch in the data plane is to simply forward packets based on the instructions given by the controller. By analyzing SDN-related research papers, it is observed that research, from the very beginning, is insufficiently focused on the data plane. Therefore, this paper gives a comprehensive overview of the data plane survey with particular emphasis on the problem of programmability and flexibility. The first part of the survey is dedicated to the evaluation of actual data plane architectures through several definitions and aspects of data plane flexibility and programmability. Then, an overview of SDN-related research was presented with the aim of identifying key factors influencing the gradual deviation from the original data plane architectures given with ForCES and OpenFlow specifications, which we called the data plane evolution. By establishing a correlation between the treated problem and the problem-solving approaches, the limitations of ForCES and OpenFlow data plane architectures were identified. Based on identified limitations, a generalization of approaches to addressing the problem of data plane flexibility and programmability is made. By examining generalized approaches, open issues have been identified, establishing the grounds for future research directions proposal.

Operational, organizational and business challenges for network operators in the context of SDN and NFV

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the new promise towards an easily configured and remotely controlled network. Based on Centralized control, SDN technology has proved its positive impact on the world of network communications from different aspects. Security in SDN, as in traditional networks, is an essential feature that every communication system should possess. In this paper, we propose an SDN security design approach, which strikes a good balance between network performance and security features. We show how such an approach can be used to prevent DDoS attacks targeting either the controller or the different hosts in the network, and how to trace back the source of the attack. The solution lies in introducing a third plane, the security plane, in addition to the data plane, which is responsible for forwarding data packets between SDN switches, and parallel to the control plane, which is responsible for rule and data exchange between the switches and the SDN controller. The security plane is designed to exchange security-related data between a third party agent on the switch and a third party software module alongside the controller. Our evaluation shows the capability of the proposed system to enforce different levels of real-time user-defined security with low overhead and minimal configuration.

The nature of computer network flash crowd traffic, which is generated by legitimate users accessing servers or other network resources are similar to the traffic generated by Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) like attacks. With advancement in spoof packet generation tools, attacker may generate Multi-source Multi-destination Multi-protocol (MMM) traffic; characteristics of such traffic are very similar to on-going genuine/ flash crowd traffic in the network. In the case of Software Defined Network (SDN), attacker’s target is controller plane. Controller plane in SDN is a centralized processing unit of the underlying network, which manages several data planes. Controller plane frames the policies and pushes forwarding rules to the data planes. Data planes just maintain the forwarding rules. Thus by overloading the SDN controller, functionality of complete computer network will be hampered. In this paper, we have proposed Media Access Control (MAC) address based Model to Differentiate Flash crowd and Malicious traffic in SDN (MDFMS). Novelty of the proposed model is to detect, locate and mitigate the source of Traditional DDoS (T-DDoS) and MMMDDoS traffic. MDFSM has been implemented on separate machine to avoid any additional computing load on SDN controller. It also preserves the original design of the SDN architecture. Proposed model has been evaluated under various scenarios and encouraging results have been obtained to differentiate T-DDoS and MMM-DDoS from benign flash crowd traffic.

Artificial intelligence based load balancing in SDN: A comprehensive survey

The evolution from conventional network frameworks to Software-Defined Networks (SDNs) marks a pivotal shift in network management. SDNs offer a unique architecture where a centralized controller orchestrates network traffic, separating the control plane from the data plane. This architecture not only brings enhanced flexibility, agility, and scalability to network operations but also introduces specific security challenges, primarily due to the centralization of control, which can be a potential Single Point of Failures (SPOFs). Addressing these security concerns, this paper introduces an innovative machine learning-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) tailored for SDNs, by proposing a three-stage CatBoost Classifier (3CC). This classifier is specifically designed for efficient and effective intrusion and vulnerability detection within SDN environments. The multistage aspect of the classifier allows for refined and detailed analysis, catering to a diverse array of attack vectors. Another key feature of our approach is the utilization of real-world data from SDN environments, which ensures that our model is tested and validated under realistic and current conditions. Furthermore, the integration of GPU acceleration significantly enhances the training speed of our model, a critical factor given the voluminous nature of network data. The proposed model, 3CC, demonstrates remarkable performance in our evaluations, achieving an accuracy of 99.8966%. This high level of precision in detecting and identifying various network intrusions and vulnerabilities underlines the efficacy of our approach. Our paper contributes significantly to the field of SDN security, offering a sophisticated, multistage classification solution that leverages the latest in machine learning techniques and real-world applicability.

This paper introduces a model that provides reduced resource waste. A resource waste is main issue of performance of mobile grid. To solve this issue, we utilize new type network system. That is Software Defined Network(SDN). In traditional network environment, there are various network technologies on Internet. People enjoy a high speed Internet service by advanced network technologies now. However, this advanced network becomes a hurdle that the new network technology is hard to be applied. Many researchers try to overcome this problem. They introduce a new network concept that is called SDN. SDN divides a switch into a control plane and a data plane. SDN provides network administrators with more comfortable management. In addition, SDN is a variety of other benefits. These benefits are used to the mobile grid. Mobile grid has an issue of management that resources of a node are freely controlled due to unstable mobile network environment. SDN overcomes this problem using additional tag of a switch and programmable controller of own networks. In this paper, we introduce a model of mobile grid with SDN. Driven by the requirement of increasing performance and flexibility, networks are being softwarized by paradigms such as software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). These solutions reduce the complexity and the specialization of hardware devices, by extracting the inherently distributed control plane of forwarding network elements such as switches and routers, to a logically centralized control plane (referred as controller in SDN). The control plane acts as a broker between the network applications (e.g. monitoring, traffic engineering) and the data plane (i.e. physical network infrastructure). For scalability and robustness, the logically centralized control plane is implemented by physically distributing different controllers throughout the network. This chapter presents different solutions to increase the reliability of both planes: data and control planes. The reliability of the data plane can be increased by considering survivable virtual network embedding solutions. This chapter proposes a survivable embedding against single and double failures at either links or nodes. Furthermore, in order to provide a programmable and resilient data plane, BPFabric has been proposed for SDN which supports high performance functions suitable for detecting attacks. On the other hand, the reliability of the control plane applied to SDN can be addressed by considering enhanced controller placement solutions providing redundancy against uncorrelated as well as targeted failures while coping with latency and capacity requirements. Furthermore, a solution to increase the security and robustness of the control channel is also addressed in this chapter.
