A Semiotic Analysis on Leaving Home Short Film

This study is aimed to analyze the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs which are found in Nivea Nourishing body lotion Signs are commonly used in advertisements in order to make them attractive and can deliver the messages properly. This research used a qualitative data collection approach and the data source came from YouTube Nivea Body advertising for the Nivea Nourishing body lotion. Saussure's (1983) semiotic theory uses this research issue to evaluate verbal and non-verbal signs and Barthes' (1977) theory of meaning to examine the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in advertising for body lotion. 5 verbal signs and 9 nonverbal signs were included in the result. In advertisements, most of these signs contain connotative and denotative meanings, with 1 denotative meaning and 13 connotative meanings identified by the researcher. In all ads, the use of connotative significance is prevalent because advertisers use hidden meanings to communicate messages and encourage buyers to try these goods.

Abstract— The aims of the study are to identify the verbal and non-verbal signs as well as to analyze their meaning in Kudeta Bali advertisements. Advertisements usually contain with sign whether in verbal or non-verbal. Each of them is used to express the meaning intended by the advertisers. The signs used also can attract the attention of the audience as well as to persuade them to buy or use the products. The data of this study were taken from the internet. The process of collecting data was searching the data from the internet, downloading the data and note taking technique. The data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. This study used the theory of semiotics by (Saussure, 1983) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and the theory of meaning by (Barthes, 1967) and supported by theory of color by (Wierzbicka, 1996). By conducting of this study, it found that verbal and non-verbal signs have important rules to make an attractive advertisement. These verbal and non-verbal signs contain denotation and connotation meaning. The advertiser tends to use brief sentences and give an informative idea about the event that held in order to attract reader’s attention. The pictures, the models, and the colors used in the advertisements also support the sentences in delivering the idea. Both of verbal and non-verbal signs are related to each other since what is in verbal signs are conveyed in visual signs.

This study is entitled Verbal and Nonverbal signs in the first episode of webtoon Orange Marmalade. This study mainly focuses on the analysis of signifiers and the signified of the verbal and nonverbal signs and their relationship in creating an event in the first episode of webtoon Orange Marmalade. Semiotic theory by Saussure’s was applied to analyze the first problem about signifying of the verbal and nonverbal signs while McCloud’s theory of relationship in comic was applied to analyze the second problem. Qualitative method was applied in the analysis of this study. The source of data was taken from the first episode of Webtoon entitled Orange Marmalade by using documentation method. The data were presented descriptively in the form of table and diagram. All types of signs found in the first episode of webtoon entitled Orange Marmalade consist of signifier and signified by verbal and nonverbal sign. The analysis reveals that the meaningful event is created by the relationship between verbal and nonverbal signs comprised in each panel within a page of the webtoon. The analysis also shows that both verbal and nonverbal signs support each other in conveying the idea.

This study involves the discovery of verbal and non-verbal signs, which also describe the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs found in the facial wash commercial advertisements. The data were taken from three printed facial wash advertisements. The data source has been taken from the internet. This study used the semiotic hypothesis provided by Saussure (1983: 65) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and the theoretical meaning provided by Barthes (1977) to find out the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in the facial wash ads. The analysis used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the results. As a result, the three facial wash ads show verbal and nonverbal signs that enable the company to market its product. In the verbal signs of the advertising, most of them contain denotative meaning and non-verbal signs which is in part, contain connotative meaning in certain advertisements. Two advertisements used a female as a model; one advertisement used a male as a model. This means that advertisers seek to gain public attention through the use of pretty females, popular figures and natural extracts or ingredients.

Digital painting are alternative media that show visual messages which element of da’wahput into the painting. With digital painting, we can share da’wah with the precious look. One of them is smudge art technic from Baju Seno that choose K.H. Anwar Manshur as an object. As we know that “Yai Anwar Manshur” is Caretaker of Lirboyo Kediri Boarding School. This research has goals to describes the signs that appear from smudge art digital painting and also to describe the meaning inside. The research use qualitative approach. The writer use analytical method with Charles Sanders Pierce Semiotic Theory. With use Semiotic Theory, any signs will prefers to “Yai Anwar Manshur”. And all of the verbal and nonverbal signs have to interpretate to be understood. The most important source of data is derived through the signs that appear on the smudge art digital painting of “Yai Anwar Manshur” and the previous research result on same themes, books, and also journals. There are signs that appear in smudge art digital painting “Yai Anwar Manshur” from Baju Seno. Start from nonverbal signs that appear on facial expressions, body expressions, and gestures of “Yai Anwar Manshur” as objects. And also visual signs as like design elements, for example lines or scratches effect of smudge tool, color, texture, and gradation that appear in smudge art digital painting “Yai Anwar Manshur”. The meaning or interpretation of nonverbal and visual signs that appear, are related with “Yai Anwar Manshur” as digital painting objects. In terms of attitude and personality, it is depicted in sign that appear on the smudg art digital painting by Baju Seno Hartyanto. Firm, disciplined, simple, and humble attitudes also personalities are the meanings that appear behind nonverbal and visual signs in digital painting. And form here the person or figure of “Yai Anwar Manshur” can be a motivation while encouraging everyone to be positive and be a better personality. The message can be a da’wah for the generations of Muslims around, through a visual work in the from of smudge art digital painting with objects “Yai Anwar Manshur” by Baju Seno Hartyanto.

Many literary works, such as novels and short stories, have been transformed into works in the form of audio-visual or film. This results in a dualism between enthusiasts of both types of works. Many enthusiasts of original works (novels) are disappointed with the results of the transfer of media to films. However, some people are satisfied with the transfer of the media, even preferring the film version to the original novel. A collection of short stories entitled Rectoverso by Dee Lestari which was transferred into a film has received a lot of praise. A collection of short stories and films are equally able to achieve the attention of the public. The two versions of Rectoverso's works have also received many awards national and international. Thus, this makes researchers interested in studying one of the short stories in Rectiverso entitled Malaikat Juga Tahu and a short film version with the same title. This research aims to find out the differences in the elements of the work of Malaikat Juga Tahu in the form of a short story and short film and to find out how the short story of Malaikat Juga Tahu is narrowed, elaborated and varied to be presented in a short film. This research used a qualitative method with the use of Pamusuk Eneste's ecranization theory as an analytical tool. The results of this research indicate changes in aspects of expansion, narrowing and variations of stories from short stories to short films. These changes were made to make the audience more immersed in the story by adding dramatic elements. In addition, the visualization element that is prioritized in the film version demands changes in the story version so that it is more acceptable to the audience.

This study aims to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs found in Walt Disney posters and analyze the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs found in Walt Disney posters. Verbal sign is about text or words that appear in the Walt Disney poster. For the non-verbal signs appears as characters and colors used. The data of the research were downloaded from the pinterest. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. This study used a theory by Saussure in Chandler (2007) to analyze verbal and non-verbal signs. While the theory from Barthes (1977) to analyze the meaning of signs, and the supporting theory from Cerrato (2012) to analyze color terms. This research reveals that 6 verbal signs and 6 non-verbal signs were found in Walt Disney posters. These signs also contained 5 denotative and 9 connotative meanings from the story line in the poster. These meanings were found in the words and picture of Walt Disney posters.

Wayang Beber is inseparable from the Indonesian people’s journey as they embrace the Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic cultures. This performing art show is an embodiment of acculturation between Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Javanese. Wayang Beber Kyai Remeng Mangunjaya is a type of Wayang Beber found in This article discusses how the semiotics of Roland Barthes can be used to reveal the significance of the Wayang Beber Remeng Mangunjaya. Through this study, the author examines the denotative and connotative meanings of the Wayang Beber. The results show that the denotative meanings are defined based on the puppet’s history and how the sacred Wayang Beber Remeng Mangunjaya is obtained. Contrastingly, the connotative meanings are expressed through visual and narrative terms.

Advertisements are a means of communication used by communicators, in this case, producers, or companies, to convey informationabout services or goods, primarily to their customers or consumers. Advertisements are not only a means of promotion but can also serve as a medium for delivering messages. One type of message that can be conveyed in advertisements is the representation of moral messages. This research aims to analyze the moral messages contained in the Telkomsel Siaga Ramadhan Edition #BersamaKitaBerkah advertisement. This research uses a qualitative method with a critical paradigm and a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include observation and documentation. The theory used is Roland Barthes’ semiotics theory, which analyzes the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings in the Telkomsel Siaga Ramadhan Edition #BersamaKitaBerkah advertisement. The results of this research show that the denotative and connotative meanings in each scene presented are closely related to everyday life. They remind us to always respect our mothers and appreciate their hard work, dedication, and efforts in raising us. The myth created is that a child should be able to repay the kindness of a mother who has worked hard to support and finance the child. The conclusion is that Telkomsel does not just create advertisements as commercial ads aimed at gaining profit but strives to present works whose story content contain positive moral messages that can be taken as lessons for Telkomsel provider users.

This research is motivated by the development of increasingly sophisticated technology, making it easier to deliver dakwah messages through this technology. Currently, da'wah is not only carried out on the pulpit but has penetrated social media and cinema. This is what prompted the author to conduct research on the Nilep Short Movie produced by Ravacana Films. This study aims to determine how the meaning, connotations and myths contained in the Nilep Short Movie and to find out what da'wah messages are contained in the Nilep Short Movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. This research uses observation and documentation data collection techniques, by applying a data analysis technique, namely semiotic analysis using the Roland Barthes model. By using this semiotic analysis model of Roland Bartes, the writer can find out the meaning of denotation, connotation and myths, as well as the da'wah messages contained in the Nilep Short Movie. The result, the writer found that the object of semiotic analysis research are image/visual, shot type and sound/audio. The writer also finds denotative meanings, connotative meanings and myths contained in the Nilep Short Movie. The author also found several da'wah messages in the short movie, namely please help, be grateful, empathize, do not repay evil for evil as well, reject munkar, do not steal, hasten good deeds, check the truth of information, say and answer greetings, and ask for sorry and forgive. Finally, the writer recommends readers to watch and retrieve the da'wah messages contained in the Nilep Short Movie.

The aim of this research is to find out the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth as well as moral values contained in the Webtoon Mistake season 1. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The data in this research are text and panel images from the Webtoon Mistake season 1 which was published on the Webtoon from 2019 until now. Data was collected using documentation and literature study data collection techniques. The results of this research are three semiotic studies by Roland Barthes, namely denotation, connotation and myth, and three moral values, namely the relationship between humans and God (gratitude), the relationship between humans and humans (caring and gratitude), and the relationship between humans and themselves (honesty and responsibility). The conclusion of this research, researchers found the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth as well as moral values contained in the Mistake season 1 Webtoon by Cindy Chwa. This research can be a reference for future researchers, especially those who will research Webtoons about moral values using Roland Barthes' semiotic studies.

The development and distribution of hoaxes are often linked to the existence of online media. Speed ​​in delivering information is considered a challenge in today's digital era, so sometimes it overlooks the importance of information accuracy and verification. The hoax issue does not only arise and is related to political problems, but also touches various other aspects of people's lives. Film Tilik (2018) is a short film that is viral on social media because it raises the hoax issue and reaps the pros and cons of netizens who watch it. This study aims to see how the film depicts the process of spreading hoaxes in society. This research is a qualitative research using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which analyzes a sign's meaning through denotation, connotation and myth. The results of this study explain how the hoax distribution process occurs in society. In addition, the researchers found a variety of motives behind the character of the figures who made hate speech who initiated the emergence of a hoax. Researchers also see that the film Tilik is a short film work that provides a complex social criticism of the topic of a hoax issue that often occurs in Indonesian society

Film in a narrow sense is the presentation of images through a wide screen, but in a broader sense it can also include those broadcast on TV. Film is one of the mass media in the form of audio-visual and its nature is very complex. The film becomes a social discourse with unique characteristics that spread to various places, and the psychoanalytic perspective of film to influence the way of thinking related to perception and value suitability in which the information is communicated. Films in general also raise a theme or phenomenon that occurs in the midst of society. One of them is the film "Nanti Kita Cerita Hari Ini" (NKCTHI) directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko. The film Later We Tell Today (NKCTHI) is the 13th film directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko which was adapted from the book of the same name by Marchella FP. Unlike other film adaptations, NKCTHI's book only contains quotable words. The touching messages in this book are then turned into a scenario in the form of a complete story. In this study used qualitative research methods using the method of Content Analysis or content analysis. The main instrument in this study is the researcher himself who conducts direct research such as watching, listening and understanding the film "Nanti Kita cerita Hari Ini" (NKCTI), using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which focuses on the idea of two orders of signification. ). There are three aspects that show that in the film "Nanti Kita Cerita Hari Ini (NKCTHI)" it does not only have a general meaning but also has a denotative meaning, connotative meaning and myth.

The purpose of this study is to determine the changes that occur in the adaptation process of the short story “Berangkat” (Go) written by Akhmad Sekhu, into the short film “Krenteg” (Intention) written and directed by Marjo Klengkam Sulam. In collecting data, this study used a qualitative descriptive method. The analysis process is by reading the short story “Berangkat”, watching the short film “Krenteg”, study to personal communication with writer and filmmaker, identifying form of change, categorizing, describing, then concluding. Based on data analysis, it is concluded that there has been a change in the intrinsic elements of the short story “Berangkat” in the short film “Krenteg”. Such as changes to the title, characters, events, setting, plot, and language. These changes were made to strengthen the story and to bring out local wisdom. Changes divided into three categories: reduce, increase, and varying changes. In conveying the message, short stories use written media and short films use audio-visual media. When changing the media, there will be adjustments based on expression needs. The results of this study can be a reference for short film makers who want to adapt short stories and attract their interest in local wisdom.

From the semiotics of theatrical representation to cultural anthropology or why theater (resists)? In this paper I propose an epistemological approach to the field of theatre semiotics from the beginning of the 20th century to our days. Firstly, I point out two different periods that have influenced theatre semiotics. The first one centres on reflections and studies by the Prague School of Structuralism. More precisely, I address Jan Mukařovsky’s essays about art and society as well as Jindrich Honzl’s contributions to the study of sign and system in theatre. The second period presented here is that of theatre semiotics in the early 70s and late 80s in France. My goal here is to expose the main reasons that led theatre semiotics to a deadlock in the early 90s. Theatre semiotic research has been rich and fruitful in the beginning of last century. However, in our days it is generally deemed unadvisable to describe theatre representation in terms of sign and system. Although theatre semiotics used to be presented in French university classes, it is no longer possible to do so. Even though general semiotics has progressed by denying the importance of structure and by refusing to search for the minimal sign and its code, theatre semiotics has remained faithful to old communicational semiotics research. Throughout my contribution, I would like to examine the kind of semiotic field best fit to approaching an artistic domain such as theatre. In other words, I would like to show that Western theatre, granted it can be seen as a semiotic object, is first and foremost an artistic and cultural one. In order to do so, I propose a theoretical and methodological framework based on a specific semiotic model: the “indicial semiology” proposed by Anne-Marie Houdebine. Inspired by Juri Lotman’s essays about culture and art, I will try to set “indicial semiology” in the general field of a cultural anthropology.
