The Development of Simulation Model for Self-reconfigurable Manufacturing System Considering Sustainability Factors

The manufacturing field is an area where the application of simulation is an essential tool for validating methods and architectures before applying them on the factory floor and the warehouse control. Multiagent system technology has demonstrated its utility in manufacturing system modelling and implementation. Agenthood features such as proactivity, reactivity, sociability and trust may also be useful for associating them with the specific simulation needs of the new manufacturing and warehouse management requirements. In this article, we present an agent-supported simulation tool for an intelligent manufacturing system and its influence with the management of the warehouse applied to a metal-mechanic manufacturing enterprise. The main goal is to provide a flexible simulation tool that can be adapted to solve the new manufacturing requirements and optimise and validate methods of management of material in warehouses that appear in real environments. Thus, the benefits of the multiagent theory application for the simulation of intelligent manufacturing and warehouse management system allows the experts of manufacturing domains to optimise the resource usage, control of inventory, providers and to have enough data to make decisions that influence the production level are presented.

A three-step approach is proposed to substantially reduce the high cost of development of control software for an FMS on the shop floor. First, by introducing the concept of multiple computing processes into Automata Theory, a finite capacity machine (FCM) is presented as an extended finite machine. An FCM is used to model the control of a flexible manufacturing system, which avoids the state explosion problem. Secondly, a structured adaptive supervisory control (SASC) model meeting the desired control objectives for an FMS is derived from a composed FCM. The SASC model can be constructed systematically. Finally, generic software components for an SASC model are described, which allow the SASC model to be cost-effectively transferred into shop-floor applicable control software.

The paper is a partial synthesis of the work that a team within the Faculty of Managerial and Technological Engineering has in the field of modeling and simulation of systems with Petri nets. The paper deals with three issues. The first part is Modeling and simulation of manufacturing systems with timed Petri nets. The first part presents the way in which the performances of some manufacturing systems are evaluated using timed Petri nets. The first example is a manufacturing system specific to the textile industry. The system has three production lines. In this case, the modeling with timed Petri nets allows the analysis of the operation of the flow lines and highlights the bottleneck. Another modeled manufacturing system is specific to a series production, more precisely it refers to the manufacture of gas cookers within a company from Oradea. The model with Petri nets also describes the supply sequences of the stocks of parts and subassemblies. The next modeled system is an automated manufacturing system for the packaging of detergents. The complexity of the Detergent Packing System and the high level of automation, require the use of efficient modeling and simulation methods to verify the validity of the solutions adopted. In this chapter is present the model of a robotic welding cell. The second part of the paper, the transition from timed Petri nets to hierarchical colored Petri nets, shows how Petri nets were developed for a robotic cell for metallographic analysis. The third part is dedicated to modeling with colored Petri nets timed with complex colors of the flexible manufacturing cell A007 within the Department of Industrial Engineering.

Previous studies of reliability centered maintenance (RCM) rarely consider the maintenance quality for the operation condition monitoring of manufacturing system. Therefore, a quality-oriented maintenance approach for the multistate manufacturing system with the aid of mission reliability is proposed. First, connotations of the mission reliability and maintenance quality of the multistate manufacturing system are expounded on the basis of the operational mechanism. Second, a quality stochastic flow network (QSFN) model of the multistate manufacturing system is established, and a novel mission reliability model is presented. Third, a quality-oriented mission reliability–centered maintenance framework for multistate manufacturing systems is proposed, and the optimal integrated maintenance strategy is obtained by minimizing the total cost. Finally, an industrial example of subway flow receiver is presented to verify the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method can simultaneously balance the maintenance cost and maintenance quality of the multistate manufacturing system.

As environmental problems become more apparent, manufacturers need to balance environmental considerations with economic activities. This is where closed-loop supply chains are gaining attention. However, in addition to demand fluctuations, which are a problem in conventional supply chains, a circular supply chain is unstable in terms of supply, where end-of-life products are collected and reused. This destabilizes not only excess inventory and shortages but also production resources, such as manpower, facilities, and raw materials. This study focuses on the stabilization of the manufacturing system in a closed-loop supply chain. To confirm the dynamic changes in the manufacturing system, we designed a simulation model of a closed-loop manufacturing system and conducted numerical experiments under several scenarios, taking the variation of manufacturing quantity per unit period as an evaluation measure of stability. After showing that unplanned remanufacturing destabilizes the recovery of reusable end-of-life products, we demonstrate that the manufacturing system can be stabilized by appropriately limiting the amount of remanufacturing. However, excessive limits reduce opportunities for remanufacturing end-of-life products and generate adverse economic and environmental impacts. To determine appropriate restrictions, it is necessary to consider the product currently in use by the customer as a virtual inventory and to consider factors such as the quality of the products in the virtual inventory. In the future, we plan to study a system that can dynamically manage remanufacturing quantities based on the status of virtual inventories.

In order to evaluate coordination degree in the evolution process about the subsystems of manufacturing and logistics industry linkage development system, Synergetics is applied to establish coordination degree model of system. The order parameters are proposed to evaluate the manufacturing and logistics industry. The calculation results show that the order degree of subsystems of both manufacturing and logistics industry is upward. The coordination degree of manufacturing and logistics industry linkage development system shows overall ascendant trend from the year 2000 to 2008 in China, but the coordination degree is still low.

This paper presents an investigation of three simulation packages: VS7, SIMAN/CINEMA IV, and SIMFACTORY II.5. These packages were investigated with regard to their capabilities of modeling problems related to a Manufacturing Systems Design (MSD) Framework, which involves different levels of detail. These levels are the Conceptual Modeling level and the Detailed Design level. The investigation is based on a case study which relates to manufacturing systems. The main objective of this investigation was to examine the existing manufacturing simulation packages and their abilities to offer variable detail modeling. The paper also suggests that it may not be possible to have an existing simulation environment that offers flexible facilities for variable detail modeling of manufacturing systems. The paper presents a method of data arrangement that may be able to help existing simulation packages cope with problems of detail variability.

An intelligent reconfigurability model based on multi-agent theory was proposed in this paper to improve feasibility of automotive manufacturing system. Each production management department in automobile manufacturing enterprises was designed as an independent agent. The practicability and rationality of the manufacturing system model was simulated as communication and interactive between different agents in this multi-agent system through JAFMAS. The application of multi-agent model in the design of automobile manufacturing system can promote the reconfigurability and intelligent level of the system.

Virtual integration (VI) offers a way to make manufacturing systems more agile and competitive. VI integrates the production resources of many manufacturing systems (partners) efficiently, and that leads to a rapid response to market changes. Based on the VI concept these partners throughout the world will form a virtual enterprise (VE). Thus to select partners is the essential and the most important issue. The main objective of this paper is to develop a partner selection and production-distribution planning with the novel partner selection model, based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology, multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) and integer programming (IP), for the VI with multiple criteria. The AHP and MAUT methods are use to assess and set weights for each partner candidate and the IP model applies these weights to find the optimal partners from the potential ones and provide the suitable production-distribution plan to the elective partners. Finally, a case study has been provided to substantiate a feasible quality solution of the proposed model.

This chapter discusses the timed event graphs (TEGs) a suitable tool for the modelling of manufacturing systems characterized by synchronization and delay phenomena but devoid of choices. Furthermore, TEGs have a linear representation in an algebraic structure called idempotent semirings. The chapter introduces several idempotent semirings, for example, max-plus algebra min-plus algebra and minax and demonstrates with several examples. As many manufacturing systems and the operation are subject to additional constraints, the standard notion of linear systems in dioids has been extended. Using the approach, it is possible to model minimal and maximal operation times, that is, time window constraints, as well as minimal and maximal numbers of work in progress, for example, in systems operating with a nested schedule. The chapter shows that the approach is relatively robust to mistakes in the modelling procedure. More precisely, if unfeasible constraints are requested, the resulting system will indicate that some transitions are blocked from the beginning.

Decentralized supervisory structure has drawn much attention in recent years to address the computational complexity in designing supervisory structures for large Petri net model. Many studies are reported in the paradigm of automata while few can be found in the Petri net paradigm. The decentralized supervisory structure can address the computational complexity, but it adds the structural complexity of supervisory structure. This paper proposed a new method of designing a global controller for decentralized systems of a large Petri net model for flexible manufacturing systems. The proposed method can both reduce the computational complexity by decomposition of large Petri net models into several subnets and structural complexity by designing a global supervisory structure that can greatly reduce the cost at the implementation stage. Two efficient algorithms are developed in the proposed method. Algorithm 1 is used to compute decentralized working zones from the given Petri net model for flexible manufacturing systems. Algorithm 2 is used to compute the global controller that enforces the liveness to the decentralized working zones. The ring assembling method is used to reconnect and controlled the working zones via a global controller. The proposed method can be applied to large Petri nets size and, in general, it has less computational and structural complexity. Experimental examples are presented to explore the applicability of the proposed method.

Automated construction of GSPN models for flexible manufacturing systems

During the last few decades, significant progress has been made in solving large-scale finite-dimensional and semi-infinite linear programming problems. In contrast, little progress has been made in solving linear programs in infinite-dimensional spaces despite their importance as models in manufacturing and communication systems. Inspired by the research on separated continuous linear programs, we propose a new class of continuous linear programming problems that has a variety of important applications in communications, manufacturing, and urban traffic control. This class of continuous linear programs contains the separated continuous linear programs as a subclass. Using ideas from quadratic programming, we propose an efficient algorithm for solving large-scale problems in this new class under mild assumptions on the form of the problem data. We prove algorithmically the absence of a duality gap for this class of problems without any boundedness assumptions on the solution set. We show this class of problems admits piecewise constant optimal control when the optimal solution exists. We give conditions for the existence of an optimal solution. We also report computational results which illustrate that the new algorithm is effective in solving large-scale realistic problems (with several hundred continuous variables) arising in manufacturing systems.

<p indent="0mm">The deep integration of the new generation of information technology and manufacturing is driving manufacturing to socialization, service-oriented, interconnected integration, and platform-oriented development. The industrial internet-oriented social manufacturing model fits the current manufacturing industry’s vision of intelligent transformation and the creation of new business formats. Based on the analysis of the evolution of the current manufacturing model, this paper presents the system architecture and operating logic of the social manufacturing model driven by information-physical-social interconnection and explores three key implementation technologies, including Social sensor-driven resource clustering and community creation, cyber-physical-social interconnection driven social manufacturing system and software model of social manufacturing. Developed a 3D printing testbed for social manufacturing and verified the feasibility of the social manufacturing theory by introducing testbed application development and the production operation process. At the same time, it also provides a demonstration and guiding role for the application and practice of the industrial internet.
