Abelian groups with small cotorsion images

In this chapter, we discuss several special types of modules that will make frequent appearances later. These include semisimple modules, artinian modules, and torsionfree modules, which have prototypes in vector spaces, finite abelian groups, and torsionfree abelian groups, respectively. That special types of modules have useful roles in the study of arbitrary modules may be seen already in the case of abelian groups (i.e., ℤ-modules). In studying an arbitrary abelian group, an almost reflexive first step is to look at its torsion part (i.e., the torsion subgroup) and its torsionfree part (i.e., the factor group modulo the torsion subgroup), since entirely different techniques are available (and needed) for dealing with torsion groups and torsionfree groups. On the torsionfree side, vector spaces make an appearance due to the facts that the torsionfree divisible abelian groups are exactly the vector spaces over ℚ and that every torsionfree abelian group can be embedded in a divisible one. On the torsion side, many questions can be reduced to the case of finite abelian groups, since every torsion abelian group is a directed union of finite subgroups. In studying torsion abelian groups, one also reduces to the case of p -groups for various primes p . Vector spaces make another appearance here, since in an abelian p -group the set of elements of order p (together with 0) forms a vector space over ℤ/ p ℤ.

We prove that the category M of abelian groups with a Polish cover introduced in collaboration with Bergfalk and Panagiotopoulos is the left heart of (the derived category of) the quasi-abelian category A of abelian Polish groups in the sense of Beilinson–Bernstein–Deligne and Schneiders. Thus, M is an abelian category containing A as a full subcategory such that the inclusion functor A→M is exact and finitely continuous. Furthermore, M is uniquely characterized up to equivalence by the following universal property: for every abelian category B, a functor A→B is exact and finitely continuous if and only if it extends to an exact and finitely continuous functor M→B. In particular, this provides a description of the left heart of A as a concrete category.We provide similar descriptions of the left heart of a number of categories of algebraic structures endowed with a topology, including: non-Archimedean abelian Polish groups; locally compact abelian Polish groups; totally disconnected locally compact abelian Polish groups; Polish R-modules, for a given Polish group or Polish ring R; and separable Banach spaces and separable Fréchet spaces over a separable complete non-Archimedean valued field.

Maximally localized Gabor orthonormal bases on locally compact Abelian groups

Let R be an associative ring with a unit and N be a left R-module. The set MR(N) = {f: N → N | f(rx) = rf(x), r ∈ R, x ∈ N} is a near-ring with respect to the operations of addition and composition and contains the ring ER(N) of all endomorphisms of the R-module N. The R-module N is endomorphic if MR(N) = ER(N). We call an Abelian group endomorphic if it is an endomorphic module over its endomorphism ring. In this paper, we find endomorphic Abelian groups in the classes of all separable torsion-free groups, torsion groups, almost completely decomposable torsion-free groups, and indecomposable torsion-free groups of rank 2.

The study of Hopficity in Abelian groups has been largely motivated by the fundamental results of Baumslag, who proved that torsion groups are always Hopfian regardless of their cardinality, but left several questions open concerning torsion-free groups. Later, Corner addressed some of these questions by providing counterexamples showing that a direct sum of two Hopfian groups can be non-Hopfian, and that a group with an automorphism group of order two does not guarantee Hopficity. These results highlighted the need for new constructions to explore Hopficity in torsion-free Abelian groups. Our work introduces a new approach based on divisibility techniques, as it contributes to the understanding of free-torsion groups with respect to the Hopficity property, providing new insights into their structural properties and implications within group theory. Our analysis also demonstrates how divisibility properties, as well as the introduction of totally invariant subgroups and homomorphisms, can be used to establish Hopficity in specific Abelian groups, particularly those that are free-torsion. In order to reach all of this, we start by taking a group defined as an infinite direct sum of cyclic groups; then we construct a specific subgroup generated by two particular families of elements; and finally we show that this group is Hopfian through results from the theory of divisible subgroups.

We are investigating cellular covers of abelian groups (for definition, see Preliminaries). Surjective cellular covers of divisible abelian groups have been characterized in a recent paper by Chacholski–Farjoun–Gobel–Segev [2]; see Theorem 3.1. After presenting a new, simple proof of this theorem, we concentrate on reduced groups. For reduced torsion groups the only surjective cellular covers are the trivial ones (Theorem 4.3). On the other hand, even rank 1 torsion-free groups may have cellular covers of arbitrarily large cardinalities (Theorem 5.3). Interestingly, those rank 1 torsion-free groups that do not admit such large cellular covers have only the trivial cellular covers (Theorem 5.4).

In the theory of abelian groups, the study of relations between an abelian group and its endomorphism group is an important problem. The question arises on conditions under which an abelian group and its endomorphism group are isomorphic ([1], Problem 31). The answer to this question has been obtained in the classes of completely decomposable abelian groups [2], vector groups [3], in the classes of periodic abelian groups, divisible abelian groups, nonreduced abelian groups, reduced algebraically compact abelian groups [4]. A group A is called an E+-group if it is isomorphic to its endomorphism group End(A). Clearly, if an abelian group A is an E+-group, then its endomorphism group End(A) is also an E+-group. In this paper, we show that the converse statement holds not always. A group A is called an End-group if the following implication takes place:

Given a locally compact group G, G L U C is the largest semigroup compactification of G and G * = G L U C ∖ G . We show that (i) for every locally compact compactly generated Abelian group G and for every p , q ∈ G * , the multiplication in G L U C is discontinuous at ( p , q ) , (ii) there is a locally compact σ-compact torsion-free Abelian group G for which, assuming Martin's Axiom, there are p , q ∈ G * such that the multiplication in G L U C is continuous at ( p , q ) , and (iii) it is consistent with ZFC that for every locally compact Abelian group G and for every p , q ∈ G * , the left translation by p in G * is discontinuous at q.

We study Pontryagin reflexivity in the class of precompact topological Abelian groups. We find reflexive groups among precompact not pseudocompact and among pseudocompact not compact groups. Making use of Martin's axiom we give an example of a reflexive countably compact not compact Abelian group. We also prove that every pseudocompact Abelian group is a quotient of a reflexive pseudocompact group with respect to a closed reflexive pseudocompact subgroup.

In the paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for an Abelian group A to be isomorphic to the endomorphism group End(A) are obtained. The classes of periodic Abelian groups, divisible Abelian groups, nonreduced Abelian groups, and reduced algebraically compact Abelian groups are considered. For certain classes of Abelian groups, the isomorphism problem for a group and its endomorphism group is solved under the assumption that the endomorphism group itself has the corresponding property.

An associative ring R is called a unique addition ring (UA-ring) if its multiplicative semigroup (R, · ) can be equipped with a unique binary operation+ transforming the triple (R, ·, +) to a ring. An R-module A is said to be an End-UA-module if the endomorphism ring EndR(A) of A is a UA-ring. In the paper, the torsion-free End-UA-modules over commutative Dedekind domains are studied. In some classes of Abelian torsion-free groups, the Abelian groups having UA-endomorphism rings are found.

We prove that the additive group of the rationals does not have an automatic presentation. The proof also applies to certain other abelian groups, for example, torsion-free groups that are p-divisible for infinitely many primes p, or groups of the form ⊕pϵIZ(p∞), where I is an infinite set of primes.

Introduction. A nil group is an (additively written) abelian group G such that every associative ring R with G as its additive group has trivial multiplication, i.e., xy = 0 for every x, y ER. Szele [2] has shown that every nil group is either a torsion group (every element of finite order) or a torsion-free group (every element except the identity of infinite order), and he has completely characterized the torsion nil groups. In [3 ], Szele discusses some questions related to nil groups, but is unable to find conditions for the existence of torsionfree nil groups. An additive group G is said to be strongly nil if there is no nontrivial ring, associative or nonassociative, which has G as its additive group. It is the purpose of this note to characterize those nil and strongly nil groups which are (isomorphic to) a weak direct sum of subgroups of the additive group of rationals, and to show that every such nil group is also strongly nil. The abelianizations of Weyl groups of root systems extended by abelian groups

For a wide class of spaces endowed with symmetries, the maximum size of a one-colour symmetric set existing under any colouring of the space in a given number of colours is determined. Discrete spaces (finite Abelian groups and initial segments of the positive integers) and continuous algebraic and geometric structures (a closed interval on the real line, figures of revolution, and compact Abelian groups) are investigated.
