Owing to two phases are continuous and penetrated each other, Interpenetrating composites exhibit good abrasive wear properties, can be an attractive candidate for structural and functional materials. Specifically, the abrasive wear model of IPCs is an important topic in the field of tribology. In present work, the model has been proposed according to the mixing rule. Many factors such as special topology structure characteristic of reinforcement, hardness and elastic module are discussed in this model. One kind of Al2O3/Mg composite with different volume content was fabricated and many test data of friction wear were obtained. These data validate the correctness and universality of model.

Influence of fillers and fibre reinforcement on abrasive wear resistance of some polymeric composites

In the present study, the abrasive wear behavior of Al–4.4 wt% Cu composite reinforced with 2 vol% graphite particle (Grp) has been investigated. In the preparation of composite, Ultrasonic Treatment (UT) is provided in the composite melt for the uniform distribution of reinforcement particles. Two bond abrasive wear tests are conducted for composites treated with ultrasound and without UT and base alloy. The results of abrasive wear studies indicate that at 5 and 10 Newton (N) loads, the composite with UT has a higher coefficient of friction (COF) and wear resistance than that of the base alloy (Al–4.4 wt% Cu). Whereas, at 15 and 20 N load, the value of COF and wear resistance is lower for the composite. Two abrasive wear mechanisms micro-plowing and micro-cutting have been observed during the wear tests of base alloy and composites. The analysis of worn-out sample surfaces at higher load reveals that softened material layer due to localized elevation in temperature between two contact surfaces during wearing acts as a tribolayer in base alloy while in composites both softened material layer and graphite layer have worked together as tribolayer.

Wear is the damaging, gradual removal or deformation of material at solid surfaces. Causes of wear can be mechanical or chemical. The study of wear and related processes is known as tribology. Abrasive wear alone has been estimated to cost 1–4% of the gross national product of industrialized nations. The current chapter focuses on types of wear phenomena observed in the industries (such as abrasive wear, adhesive wear, fretting wear, fatigue wear, erosive wear and corrosive wear), their mechanisms, application of surface coating for the protection of the surface from the industrial wear, types of surface coatings, thermal spray coating, types of thermal spray coating and its application in industry to protect the surface from wear. The detail information about the wear phenomena will help the industries to minimize their maintenance cost of the parts.

High-speed cutting technology has become the main direction of development of machinery manufacturing industry; however, the excessive temperature and sharp tool wear have greatly restricted the improvement of drilling speed. To reduce the cutting temperature and alleviate the severe friction and wear of the tool/chip and tool/workpiece interface, micro-groove textures were fabricated on the rake face and flank face of the carbide internal cooling twist drills by an Nd:YAG laser. Thus, two developed cutting tools were fabricated: (1) the internal cooling twist drills with textured rake-face (TF) and (2) the internal cooling twist drills with textured flank-face (TB). High-speed drilling experiments were carried out on Ti6Al4V using these developed tools, and the resulting friction and wear data were compared with those from the conventional one (NT). Results obtained in this work demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating micro-groove textures on internal cooling tool to improve the high-speed cutting performance. Moreover, the mechanisms for the effects of micro-textures fabricated on rake face and flank face were different. The micro-groove textures fabricated on the rake face can significantly increase the degree of chip curling, reduce the contact length at the tool/chip interface, and improve the chip breaking ability; while, the internal cooling abilities were significantly enhanced by the micro-textures fabricated on the flank face; thus, the effects on decreasing the drilling force and improving the anti-adhesive and abrasive wear properties were achieved.

This paper describes effect of the lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and remelting on microstructure; hardness and abrasive wear behavior of Ni-WC composite powder flame sprayed coatings. It was found that La2O3 modification and remelting of flame sprayed Ni-base composite coating refined the microstructure and increased microhardness and resistance to abrasive wear. La2O3 modification and remelting of the coating increased hardness by 1.2 to 1.3 folds. Abrasive wear behavior of unmodified and La2O3 modified coating in as spayed and re-melted conditions were studied against at different normal loads (5, 10, 15 and 20N) and abrasive mediums of 120 and 600 grit sizes. La2O3 modified composite coating in re-melted condition showed minimum wear rate irrespective of normal load and abrasive medium. Abrasive wear study results were supported by SEM analysis of worn out surfaces.

Dry sliding wears behavior of die cast aluminium alloy composites reinforced with copper-coated short steel fibers were investigated using a pin-on-disk wear-testing machine. The composites were prepared by liquid metal route using vortex method. The weight percentage of copper-coated steel fibers was varied from 2.5 to 10. The density and hardness of the composite increased linearly with increasing wt% of steel fibers. The wear rate decreased by 40% with addition of 10% weight percentage of fibers. A linear dependence of wear rate on fiber content and hardness of MMC is observed. The unreinforced aluminium and composites containing upto 5-wt% of fibers exhibited a sliding distance dependent transition from severe to mild wear. However, composites containing 10-wt% fiber showed only mild wear for all sliding distance. It was also observed that with increase in the fiber content to 10-wt% the coefficient of friction decreased by 22%. The duration of occurrence of the severe wear regime and the wear rate decreased with increasing fiber content. For the composite the wear rate in the mild wear regime decreased with increase in fiber content reaching a minimum. From the analysis of wear data and detail examination of (a) wear surface and (b) wear debris two modes of wear have been identified to be operative, in these materials. These are (i) adhesive wear in the case of unreinforced matrix and in MMC with low wt% (upto 5-wt%) fibers (ii) abrasive wear in case of MMC with high wt% of fibers.

ABSTRACTNitrogen ion implantation was investigated as a means of improving the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the performance of the Ti-6Al-4V/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear couple. Included in the pin-on-disc wear study were cobalt-chromium and stainless steel controls as well as non-ion-implanted Ti-6Al-4V. Ion implanted Ti-6Al-4V and the control alloys exhibited minor scratching whereas non-ion-implanted Ti-6AI-4V exhibited definite wear scars. Gravimetric analysis of the UHMWPE discs revealed no significant difference between those worn against ion implanted Ti-6Al-4V and the control alloys. Discs worn against non-ionimplanted Ti-6Al-4V, however, exhibited significantly more weight loss than the other couples. The results of this testing indicate that nitrogen ion implantation improves the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V with an attendant decrease in the amount of polyethylene abrasive wear.
