In a formal or an informal manner, computer graphics has been a field of research and education since the early 1970s in Turkey. The earlier examples of academic research work came from Istanbul Technical University and Middle East Technical University in Ankara. Istanbul Technical University research efforts were basically on computer-aided design, whereas at the Middle East Technical University, more theoretical computer graphics work has been carried on.Two examples can be given of early theoretical graphics work: A hidden line elimination algorithm by Ibrahim Canbulat, and an automated drafting algorithm by the author [2, 3]. To the best of my knowledge, the earliest official computer graphics course was offered at the Middle East Technical University in 1979. With the establishment of Bilkent University in Ankara, the first private university in Turkey, computer graphics became an official track of study, not only in computer engineering, but in fine arts as well.In this paper, we examine the current state of computer graphics education in Turkey under two main headings. First, the educational activities within the departments of computer science will be examined. Then, the educational activities within the schools of art and design will be looked at. In order to find out the educational activities at various universities, we have written to 52 departments at 40 universities. The information given in this report is based on the responses from these departments. Many departments at various schools offer technical drawing courses by the use of drafting software. These have not been classified as computer graphics courses.

The other-race effect refers to the observation that we perform better in tasks involving faces of our own race compared to faces of a race we are not familiar with. This is especially interesting as from a biological perspective, the category “race” does in fact not exist (Cosmides L, Tooby J, Krurzban R, Trends Cogn Sci 7(4):173–179, 2003); visually, however, we do group the people around us into such categories. Usually, the other-race effect is investigated in memory tasks where observers have to learn and subsequently recognize faces of individuals of different races (Meissner CA, Brigham JC, Psychol Public Policy Law 7(1):3–35, 2001) but it has also been demonstrated in perceptual tasks where observers compare one face to another on a screen (Walker PM, Tanaka J, Perception 32(9):1117–1125, 2003). In all tasks (and primarily for technical reasons) the test faces differ in race and identity. To broaden our general understanding of the effect that the race of a face has on the observer, in the present study, we investigated whether an other-race effect is also observed when participants are confronted with faces that differ only in ethnicity but not in identity. To that end, using Asian and Caucasian faces and a morph algorithm (Blanz V, Vetter T, A morphable model for the synthesis of 3D faces. In: Proceedings of the 26th annual conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques – SIGGRAPH’99, pp 187–194, 1999), we manipulated each original Asian or Caucasian face to generate face “race morphs” that shared the same identity but whose race appearance was manipulated stepwise toward the other ethnicity. We presented each Asian or Caucasian face pair (original face and a race morph) to Asian (South Korea) and Caucasian (Germany) participants who had to judge which face in each pair looked “more Asian” or “more Caucasian”. In both groups, participants did not perform better for same-race pairs than for other-race pairs. These results point to the importance of identity information for the occurrence of an other-race effect.

Tangible cultural heritage has provided visually appealing material for those researching in computer graphics, computational geometry, and interactive techniques. However, experiments were initially of more benefit to computer scientists as tests for their novel techniques than of any practical benefit to cultural-heritage professionals. Recently, however, tools have matured considerably, and technology is now enabling novel applications for documenting and preserving tangible cultural heritage and is continuing to inspire computer graphics researchers. Nevertheless, there's still a long way to go.

The effects of filler loading on the tensile and elongation at break of SMR 10 using a sulphur vulcanization system was studied. Carbon black (N220) was used as the fillers and the loading range was from 10 to 40 phr. Two Roll Mill (Model LS-22005) and 25 Ton Hot Cold Molding Press (Model LS22025) used for mixing and molding press. Both equipments were supplied by Lotus Scientific. Tensile and elongation at break were determined using a Universal Testing Machine (Model 133004600771) operating at 20 mm/min. Results show that, elongation at break decreases, but tensile strength, increase with filler loading. This observation is attributed to the rubber–filler interphaseinteraction of carbon black and rubber.

Recent advances in computer graphics and interactive techniques have increased the visual quality and flexibility of Augmented Reality (AR) applications. This, in turn has increased the viability of applying AR to educational exhibits for use in Science Centres, Museums, Libraries and other education centres. This article outlines a selection of five projects developed at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory in New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) that have explored different techniques for applying AR to educational exhibits. These exhibits have received very positive feedback and appear to have educational benefits involving spatial, temporal and contextual conceptualisation and provide kinaesthetic, explorative and knowledge-challenging stimulus. The controls available to a user of turning a page, moving an AR marker, moving their head and moving a slider provide sufficient freedom to create many interaction scenarios that can serve educative outcomes. While the use of virtual media provides many advantages, creating new content is still quite difficult, requiring specialist software and skills. Useability observations are shared.

VRML —the Virtual Reality Modeling Language— has estab-lished as the standard description language for 3D worlds on theInternet. Although it recently has been extended by features inorder to support behaviors and user interactions, enablingauthors to realize interactive virtual worlds, there is still a lack ofsupport to share such worlds with other users. In this paper we will present our approach on supportinglarge-scaled shared virtual worlds based on VRML by an appro-priate network infrastructure as well as mechanisms to partitionthese worlds. We will show how virtual worlds can be populatedby world-wide distributed users and applications, and the re-quirements to share behaviors and interactions between those.CR Categories and Subject Descriptors: C.2.2 [ComputerCommunication Networks]: Network Protocols; C.2.4 [Com-puter Communication Networks]: Distributed Systems -Dis-tributed applications; H.5.1 [Information Interfaces and Pre-sentation] Multimedia Information Systems - ArtificialRealities; I.3.2 [Computer Graphics]: Graphics Systems -Dis-tributed/network graphics;I.3.6 [Computer Graphics]: Meth-odology and Techniques - Interaction Techniques; I.3.7. The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for solving educational computational and graphic work from a cycle of constructive tasks of engineering and construction design (construction graphics) by computer geometric modeling in the environment of the domestic nanoCAD program. Algorithmization of the solution of the problem was carried out on the example of a training task from the cycle of graphic works in the course "Engineering and computer graphics", which is performed by students in the first semester and is the basis for solving problems of engineering and construction design. It is shown that the use of computer geometric modeling methods by means of modern software products makes it possible to speed up the process of solving a problem, simplify the calculation of the necessary data and visualize the results, which together contribute to an increase in the didactic effect and mastering the learning competencies necessary in future professional activities. Computer geometric modeling contributes to the understanding of the principles of modern information technologies, and also instills the skills to use them to solve more complex educational problems and tasks of future professional activity. Thus, the application of the proposed algorithm of computer geometric modeling in solving educational and applied problems within the framework of the training course "Engineering and Computer Graphics" in the preparation of students of engineering and construction profile, as well as in the performance of research and design activities is appropriate.

CavePainting is an artistic medium that uses a 3D analog of 2D brush strokes to create 3D works of art in a fully immersive Cave environment. Physical props and gestures are used to provide an intuitive interface for artists who may not be familiar with virtual reality. The system is designed to take advantage of the 8 ft. x 8 ft. x 8 ft. space in which the artist works. CavePainting enables the artist to create a new type of art and provides a novel approach to viewing this art after it has been created. In this paper, we describe CavePainting’s 3D brush strokes, color pickers, artwork viewing mode, and interface. We also present several works of art created using the system along with feedback from artists. Artists are excited about this form of art and the gestural, full-body experience of creating it.
