Opportunistic preventive maintenance scheduling for multi-unit reusable rocket engine system based on the variable maintenance task window method

This paper proposes an opportunistic maintenance policy for the multi-unit series production system, which is on the basis of the failure rate analysis. When system halts for performing preventive maintenance or opportunistic maintenance, the alternative decision of replacement and repair is made by economic evaluation of two types of maintenance actions. The optimal preventive maintenance plans in a finite time horizon can be obtained by adjusting the preventive and opportunistic maintenance threshold. A numerical example is given for illustrating the applications of the policy.

Purpose Making decisions on preventive maintenance (PM) policy and buffer sizing, as is often studied, may not result in overall optimization. The purpose of this paper is to propose a joint model that integrates PM and buffer sizing with consideration of quality loss for a degenerating system, which aims to minimize the average operation cost for a finite horizon. The opportunistic maintenance (OM) policy which could increase the output and decrease the cost of the system is also explored. Design/methodology/approach A joint PM and buffer size model considering quality loss is proposed. In this model, the time-based PM and the condition-based PM are taken on the upstream and the downstream machine, respectively. Further, the OM policy based on the theory of constraints (TOC) is also considered. An iterative search algorithm with Monte Carlo is developed to solve the non-linear model. A case study is conducted to illustrate the performance of the proposed PM policies. Findings The superiority of the proposed integrated policies compared with the separate PM policy is demonstrated. Effects of the policies are testified. The advantages of the proposed TOC-based OM policy is highlighted in terms of low-cost and high-output. Originality/value Few studies have been carried out to integrate decisions on PM and buffer size when taking the quality loss into consideration for degenerating systems. Most PM models treat machines equally ignoring the various roles of them. A more comprehensive and integrated model based on TOC is proposed, accompanied by an iterative search algorithm with Monte Carlo for solving it. An OM policy to further improve the performance of system is also presented.

Multi-criteria model to support the definition of opportunistic maintenance policy: A study in a cogeneration system

In this chapter maintenance concept is defined and maintenance types are classified with regard to implementing maintenance policies toward preventive maintenance. Especially achieving planned maintenance policies toward preventive (planned) maintenance and condition based maintenance policies toward predictive maintenance is taken into consideration primarily. Maintenance concept is defined and maintenance types are classified. Due care is given for ‘Preventive Maintenance’ in this chapter. In general ‘Maintenance’ term could be defined as; The integration of all possible technical and administrative actions, including planning, supervising, monitoring and controlling toward retaining an item, a system, a machine to restore their original functional state in which they can perform the intended functions. In addition maintenance, include protective and corrective actions to keep the plant operational system in intended conditions or to maintain the acceptable manufacturing conditions. Optimum maintenance policies aims to sustain system reliability and robustness within minimum cost. In line with the progress of industry, increase in the system, material and manpower costs, increasing demand for robustness and the complex structure of the machines increases also the importance of maintenance policies. Maintenance types could be divided into two main parts namely; 1. Preventive Maintenance, 2. Corrective Maintenance. Preventive Maintenance is also classified into following sub groups; 1.a- Planned Maintenance, 1.b- Predictive Maintenance, 1.c- Advanced Maintenance Implementations; 1.c.1 Reliability Centered Maintenance 1.c.2 Risk Based Maintenance. All of these maintenance types elaborated with relevant figures in the chapter. In this chapter Comparison of Planned and Unplanned (corrective) Maintenance (With regard to transaction and output) is defined with a table. Additionally, Comparison of Planned and Unplanned (corrective) Maintenance (With regard to infra structure) is also tabulated. ‘Benefits of Preventive & Predictive Maintenance’ and ‘Predictive Maintenance Methods’ are defined with relevant descriptive figures in the chapter. For Corrective Maintenance, basic definitions and corrective maintenance steps, types of corrective Maintenance, improvement strategies in corrective maintenance effectiveness are also given. In the final part of ‘Results and conclusions’ expected and verified benefits of implementing maintenance policies for planned and predictive maintenance are explained. Comparisons in some maintenance policies is given.

The opportunistic maintenance of a k-out-of-n:G system with imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) is studied in this paper, where partial failure is allowed. In many applications, the optimal maintenance actions for one component often depend on the states of the other components and system reliability requirements. Two new (τ, T) opportunistic maintenance models with the consideration of reliability requirements are proposed. In these two models, only minimal repairs are performed on failed components before time τ and the corrective maintenance (CM) of all failed components are combined with PM of all functioning but deteriorated components after τ; if the system survives to time T without perfect maintenance, it will be subject to PM at time T. Considering maintenance time, asymptotic system cost rate and availability are derived. The results obtained generalize and unify some previous research in this area. Deep reinforcement learning based preventive maintenance policy for serial production lines

For traditional degrading load-sharing systems, a typical assumption lies in the only effect of unit load on its degradation rate. However, motivated by a laser system example with positive correlation between degradation rate and volatility, we present a novel load-sharing system with general degradation rate-volatility-load correlation. Furthermore, to take account for unit economic dependence caused by sharable maintenance set-up cost, and the window period generated by the maintenance on some unit, opportunistic maintenance (OM) strategy is introduced to offer the opportunity of simultaneously maintaining another working unit under control-limit criteria. Based on the semi-regenerative process, the long-run average cost rate is minimized to obtain the optimal inspection interval, preventive maintenance and OM thresholds. Compared to the traditional condition-based maintenance strategy separately for each unit, the effectiveness of OM strategy is validated through numerical examples and case studies, offering broad managerial insights for engineers to reduce maintenance expenses.

Optimizing wind turbine's maintenance policies under performance-based contract

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) bridge inventory is rapidly aging. As such, the Cabinet needs to identify and implement relevant preventative maintenance (PM) actions to extend the useful service lives of those structures. Maintenance actions, costs, and application interval/repair durability information have been obtained for both cyclical and condition-based bridge PM. Additionally, information rehabilitation actions were acquired from a regional Department of Transportation (DOT) survey and from other literature. As part of this study, the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) researchers monitored a KYTC bridge washing project to assess its level of effectiveness and to identify potential improvements. Based upon these tasks, recommended guidance was provided to KYTC for use when implementing bridge PM programs. The guidance includes a discussion of critical PM activities, strategies to adopt training and work documents (i.e., special notes) for contract work, and the implementation of work standards/special operating procedures for work performed by KYTC personnel. This report also includes details on the tools and training KYTC district-level personnel will need and outlines a roadmap for conducting pilot programmatic PM work in several districts.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a model that permits more rational planning for preventive maintenance, by controlling failures in the specific context of equipment breakdown. Thus not only the cost and reliability parameters are dealt with, but also the peculiarities of different contexts in which maintenance activities occur. Furthermore, it aims to include Bayesian methodology in the procedure to overcome main difficulties in failure data.Design/methodology/approachA multi‐criteria decision‐aiding model capable of overcoming the two main difficulties related to preventive maintenance: establishing a replacement periodicity based on more than one criterion, and the ability to provide a solution in uncertainties situations, has been developed from adaptation of classical models. This model also uses Bayesian elements to address uncertainties during equipment failures.FindingsThe paper finds that in a preventive maintenance planning, as a multi‐criteria decision problem, different types of uncertainties may be identified, which may be categorized as external uncertainties and internal uncertainties. In the proposed model a division of procedures has been established, dealing with external uncertainties first, then the internal uncertainties related to the structure of the problem and analysis of the decision are addressed using the multi‐criteria decision‐making method PROMETHEE III that allows the amplification of the notion of indifference. In this way, a suitable structure to connect two types of uncertainties was structured.Practical implicationsThe model will assist the decision‐maker in preventive maintenance planning to take uncertainties into account, seeing the alternatives that are closest, through an amplification of the notion of indifference provided by PROMETHEE III. Furthermore, in practice the proposed model have an impact on maintenance cost and reliability of production plant.Originality/valueThis paper proposes a multi‐criteria decision‐aiding model capable of overcoming the two main difficulties related to preventive maintenance: establishing a replacement periodicity based on more than one criterion; and the ability to provide a solution even when failure data are unavailable or incomplete.

PurposeThis paper aims to propose an approach for the optimization of imperfect preventive maintenance and corrective actions performed on a single machine. After maintenance, the machine returns to an age between “as good as new” and “as bad as old”.Design/methodology/approachThe approach is based on fuzzy logic and simulation‐based optimization. Fuzzy logic is preferred over crisp logic because it is relatively easy to implement in this situation considering that the human factor is hardly interpreted by analytical methods because of its unpredictable nature. Simulation‐based optimization is used to have a more reactive and accurate tool for practitioners.FindingsTaking into account the impact of the imperfections due to human factors, the period for preventive maintenance, which minimizes the expected cost rate per unit of time or maximizes the availability of the system, is evaluated by the simulation‐based optimization.Research limitations/implicationsDifferent and more realistic maintenance levels must be considered and the traceability of a specific system could be used to determine the most appropriate failure law. For this study, cost reduction was considered as the priority, but the model can be adjusted according to the user's preferences.Practical implicationsThis paper considers a single repairable machine as a system that undergoes periodic preventive and corrective maintenance actions. Considering maintenance imperfections, rule‐based fuzzy logic can be integrated into the maintenance program to determine the times for the periodic preventive maintenance actions.Originality/valueConsidering human factors in maintenance programs is indispensable to assure more accurate and realistic results. However, due to the difficulty engendered by their modeling, most theoretical maintenance models do not consider these factors. Therefore, the proposed fuzzy model in the paper can be an important tool to include them.

With the popularization of service-oriented manufacturing, the current operation & maintenance (O&M) has shifted from traditional in-house maintenance to proactive outsourcing maintenance. It is paramount for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to provide timely and cost-effective maintenance schemes to geographically distributed customer enterprises. Interestingly, transportation theories could be combined to facilitate multi-location O&M management. In this paper, a transportation-oriented cross-regional opportunistic maintenance (TCOM) policy is developed for solving O&M optimizations and planning real-time schemes for the multi-center service network. The optimization model of this TCOM policy addresses several inter-related decisions: (1) most suitable maintenance times for each leased machine, (2) cost-effective arrangements of technician teams to perform maintenance tasks, and (3) optimal service routes for required teams. We not only integrate maintenance grouping and technician routing, but also investigate the new issues arising from the collaborative sharing of technician teams belonging to different maintenance centers. Numerical examples show that this TCOM policy can achieve significant cost-saving in cross-regional maintenance grouping and multi-location routing optimization for OEMs. <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Note to Practitioners</i> —This paper is motivated by the critical problem of computing an optimal maintenance policy for the multi-center service network of geographically distributed production systems to achieve a timely and cost-effective O&M management. We consider individual machine degradations, complex maintenance opportunities and network logistics optimization to establish a global maintenance scheme for the multi-center service network. The existing approaches are to schedule the preventive maintenance (PM) for a single machine or multi-unit leased system, which is unilateral and cannot be applied to multi-location production systems. Although the network opportunistic maintenance policy has been proposed in the literature for maintenance grouping and technician routing problem, it still does not consider the limited workforce resource and the collaborative sharing of technician teams from different maintenance centers. To fill this literature gap, in this paper, we develop the TCOM policy to determine the optimal maintenance timetable for leased machines, as well as the cost-effective service route of technician teams belonging to multiple maintenance centers, so as to conduct timely and cost-effective PM on multi-location production systems. Compared with the conventional maintenance policy, our adaptive policy greatly reduces the total outsourcing maintenance cost in long-term O&M services.

This paper studies a manufacturer with a system prone to failure. The manufacturer performs two types of maintenance activities: preventive maintenance (PM), performed periodically, resets the system, and Minimal Repair (MR), performed after breakdowns, restores the system to working condition. It is assumed that two different types of learning take place: (i) repetition learning: due to the repetitive nature of PM, the manufacturer gains experience and learns to perform the PM activities faster and at a lower cost and (ii) failure learning: each failure gives the manufacturer the opportunity to find the root causes, to learn from mistakes and to improve the system. This paper, the first one to quantify failure learning in maintenance literature, assumes that such learning can then be applied during the next PM activity, which brings down the failure rate for the next PM cycle. For the increasing failure rate case, repetition learning increases the PM frequency, whereas failure learning causes the manufacturer to reduce the optimal number of PM activities. However, for the constant failure rate, repetition learning has no effect on the PM frequency, whereas failure learning may actually increase it.
