Abstract

Early and accurate detection of plant leaf diseases play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable agricultural productivity and minimizing crop losses. This research addresses the classification of bean leaf lesions—a common problem affecting yield and plant health—by proposing an advanced deep learning-based methodology utilizing the EfficientNetV2-S architecture. The approach integrates systematic preprocessing techniques, including normalization and augmentation, to enhance model generalization across varying visual conditions. The model was trained and validated on a structured dataset comprising three categories: healthy, angular leaf spot, and bean rust. Optimization was achieved using the AdamW optimizer along with a multi-step learning rate scheduler and early stopping to prevent overfitting. Experimental results demonstrated a classification accuracy of 99%, supported by near-perfect precision, recall, and F1-scores across all classes. The confusion matrix confirmed the model’s high reliability, with only one instance misclassified out of 133 total samples. These findings highlight the robustness and efficiency of the proposed model in classifying bean leaf lesions with minimal error. The research contributes a scalable and accurate solution to the domain of automated plant disease detection and presents significant potential for integration into real-time agricultural monitoring systems, aiding in precision farming and early intervention strategies.
