Algebraic Immunity of Even Variable Symmetric Boolean Functions

Rotation symmetric Boolean functions (RSBFs) which are invariant under circular translation of indices have been used as components of different cryptosystems. In this paper, we study the construction of RSBFs with maximum algebraic immunity. First, a new construction of RSBFs on odd number of variables with maximum possible Algebraic Immunity is given. Then by using the relationship between some flats and support of a n -variables Boolean function f , we prove that a construction of RSBFs on even number of variables has maximum possible Algebraic Immunity. Furthermore, we study the nonlinearity of functions by our construction.

The properties of the 2m-variable symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity are studied in this paper. Their value vectors, algebraic normal forms, and algebraic degrees and weights are all obtained. At last, some necessary conditions for a symmetric Boolean function on even number variables to have maximum algebraic immunity are introduced.

Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity have been considered as one class of cryptographically significant functions. It is known that Boolean functions on odd variables have maximum algebraic immunity if and only if a correlative matrix has column full rank, and Boolean functions on even variables have maximum algebraic immunity if and only if two correlative matrices have column full rank. Recently, a smaller matrix was used in the odd case. We find that one or two smaller matrices can be used in the even case and consequently present several sufficient and necessary conditions for Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity. This result advances the ability to identify whether Boolean functions on even variables achieve maximum algebraic immunity. We also present a construction algorithm for n-variable Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity, specially with the Hamming weights of \( \sum {_{i = 0}^{\left\lceil {\frac{n} {2}} \right\rceil - 1} } \left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} n \\ i \\ \end{array} } \right) \). It is easily realized for not too large n and helps construct balanced Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity on even variables. Furthermore, we present a sufficient and necessary condition for balanced Boolean functions to achieve maximum algebraic immunity and optimum algebraic degree, and modify the construction algorithm to construct Boolean functions on odd variables with maximum algebraic immunity, optimum algebraic degree and high nonlinearity.

Results on highly nonlinear Boolean functions with provably good immunity to fast algebraic attacks

Algebraic immunity is an important cryptographic property for Boolean functions against algebraic attacks. Constructions of Boolean functions with the maximum algebraic immunity (MAI Boolean functions) by using univariate polynomial representation of Boolean functions over finite fields have received more and more attention. In this paper, how to obtain more MAI Boolean functions from a known MAI Boolean function under univariate polynomial representation is further investigated. The sufficient condition of Boolean functions having the maximum algebraic immunity obtained by changing a known MAI Boolean function under univariate polynomial representation is given. With this condition, more balanced MAI Boolean functions under univariate polynomial representation can be obtained. The algebraic degree and the nonlinearity of these Boolean functions are analyzed.

The conceptions of $\chi$-value and K-rotation symmetric Boolean functions are introduced by Cusick. K-rotation symmetric Boolean functions are a special rotation symmetric functions, which are invariant under the $k-th$ power of $\rho$.In this paper, we discuss cubic 2-value 2-rotation symmetric Boolean function with $2n$ variables, which denoted by $F^{2n}(x^{2n})$. We give the recursive formula of weight of $F^{2n}(x^{2n})$, and prove that the weight of $F^{2n}(x^{2n})$ is the same as its nonlinearity.

Two important classes of symmetric Boolean functions are the equal-weight Boolean functions and the elementary (or homogeneous) symmetric Boolean functions. In this paper we studied the equal-weight symmetric Boolean functions. First the Walsh spectra of the equal-weight symmetric Boolean functions are given. Second the sufficient and necessary condition on correlation-immunity of the equal-weight symmetric Boolean function is derived and other cryptology properties such as the nonlinearity, balance and propagation criterion are taken into account. In particular, the nonlinearity of the equal-weight symmetric Boolean functions with n (n ≥ 10) variables is determined by their Hamming weight. Considering these properties will be helpful in further investigations of symmetric Boolean functions.

This paper reports a study that has established the possibility of improving the effectiveness of the method of figurative transformations in order to minimize symmetrical Boolean functions in the main and polynomial bases. Prospective reserves in the analytical method were identified, such as simplification of polynomial function conjuncterms using the created equivalent transformations based on the method of inserting the same conjuncterms followed by the operation of super-gluing the variables. The method of figurative transformations was extended to the process of minimizing the symmetrical Boolean functions with the help of algebra in terms of rules for simplifying the functions of the main and polynomial bases and developed equivalent transformations of conjuncterms. It was established that the simplification of symmetric Boolean functions by the method of figurative transformations is based on a flowchart with repetition, which is the actual truth table of the assigned function. This is a sufficient resource to minimize symmetrical Boolean functions that makes it possible to do without auxiliary objects, such as Karnaugh maps, cubes, etc. The perfect normal form of symmetrical functions can be represented by binary matrices that would represent the terms of symmetrical Boolean functions and the OR or XOR operation for them. The experimental study has confirmed that the method of figurative transformations that employs the 2-(n, b)-design, and 2-(n, x/b)-design combinatorial systems improves the efficiency of minimizing symmetrical Boolean functions. Compared to analogs, this makes it possible to enhance the productivity of minimizing symmetrical Boolean functions by 100‒200 %. There are grounds to assert the possibility of improving the effectiveness of minimizing symmetrical Boolean functions in the main and polynomial bases by the method of figurative transformations. This is ensured, in particular, by using the developed equivalent transformations of polynomial function conjuncterms based on the method of inserting similar conjuncterms followed by the operation of super-gluing the variables.

Boolean functions with a variety of secure cipher properties are the key factors to design cryptosystem with the ability to resist multiple cipher attacks and good safety performance. In this paper, using the derivative of the Boolean functions and the e-derivative defined by ourselves as the main research tools, we study algebraic immunity, correlation immunity and other cryptographic properties of the quadratic rotation symmetric Boolean functions. We determine the quadratic rotation symmetric Boolean functions which are H Boolean functions, and the range of weight distribution of the quadratic rotation symmetry H Boolean functions. Besides, we get the compatibility among propagation, balance, correlation immunity and algebraic immunity of the quadratic rotation symmetry H Boolean functions, and also focus on the relationship of balance, correlation immunity and dimension. Furthermore, we check the existence of the cubic rotation symmetry H Boolean functions, and obtain the relationship between existence and dimension of the cubic rotation symmetry H Boolean functions. Moreover, we obtain a more convenient method for solving annihilator. Such researches are important in cryptographic primitive designs, and have significance and role in the theory and application range of cryptosystems.

Two Boolean functions are affine equivalent if one can be obtained from the other by applying an affine transformation to the input variables. For a long time, there have been efforts to investigate the affine equivalence of Boolean functions. Due to the complexity of the general problem, only affine equivalence under certain groups of permutations is usually considered. Boolean functions which are invariant under the action of cyclic rotation of the input variables are known as rotation symmetric (RS) Boolean functions. Due to their speed of computation and the prospect of being good cryptographic Boolean functions, this class of Boolean functions has received a lot of attention from cryptographic researchers. In this paper, we study affine equivalence for the simplest rotation symmetric Boolean functions, called MRS functions, which are generated by the cyclic permutations of a single monomial. Deutsch–Jozsa problem (D–J) has exact quantum 1-query complexity (“exact” means no error), but requires super-exponential queries for the optimal classical deterministic decision trees. D–J problem is equivalent to a symmetric partial Boolean function, and in fact, all symmetric partial Boolean functions having exact quantum 1-query complexity have been found out and these functions can be computed by D–J algorithm. A special case is that all symmetric Boolean functions with exact quantum 1-query complexity follow directly and these functions are also all total Boolean functions with exact quantum 1-query complexity obviously. Then there are pending problems concerning partial Boolean functions having exact quantum 1-query complexity and new results have been found, but some problems are still open. In this paper, we review these results regarding exact quantum 1-query complexity and in particular, we also obtain a new result that a partial Boolean function with exact quantum 1-query complexity is constructed and it cannot be computed by D–J algorithm. Further problems are pointed out for future study.
