An Affect-Based Built Environment Video Analytics

Purpose This study aims to provide an overview of how Citizen Science (CS) has been applied in the Built Environment (BE) field, highlighting research trends, participation levels, challenges, and future opportunities. Design/methodology/approach A total of 107 relevant articles were identified from Taylor & Francis Online, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. A combination of bibliometric analysis (using CiteSpace software) and Content Analysis was conducted to reveal a broad picture of the research landscape. Findings The study found that 107 articles were published across 52 journals, primarily in urban planning and health-related domains. The United States and the United Kingdom lead global CS collaboration, while many regions remain underrepresented. CS projects in BE are typically small-scale (=50 participants), with contributory CS being the most common (45.79%). The CS research focuses on enhancing community engagement, addressing health-related BE issues, and improving urban design. However, research gaps remain in mental well-being, social networks, and policy support. Key challenges include sustaining long-term engagement, addressing technical skill gaps, ensuring data quality, and improving demographic representativeness. Research limitations/implications The review is limited to English-language articles and focuses on formal CS projects. Future research could expand to include more diverse databases, apply advanced computational methods like NLP, and conduct comparative analyses across regions and participation models. Originality/value This review systematically maps the landscape of CS research in the BE field, clarifies citizen participation levels, highlights regional disparities, and proposes actionable directions for improving research design, digital tool integration, and policy mechanisms that can support the formal inclusion of CS research in urban planning and decision-making processes.

The aim of the paper is to review and analyze the content of papers that focused on the perception verbal aggression of university teachers and its reflection on the outcomes of higher education. The research method used is the method of theoretical analysis. Papers related to the perception of verbal aggression of teachers were reviewed, and the analysis included papers that had a sample of student population, and used an identical measuring instrument to examine the perception of verbal aggression of teachers, and papers that did not use hypothetical situations and experimental designs in research. Initially, 25 papers were considered, of which, according to the established criteria, 9 were taken into account for analysis. The results of the research indicate that higher perception of verbal aggression by teachers, ie manifestation of verbal aggression by teachers participation in communication both in class and outside, satisfaction, general atmosphere in the group, perceptions of fairness, perceptions of students' understanding of students, application of antisocial student behavior, anxiety, affective attitude towards the subject and teacher, self-esteem, perceptions of confirmation by teachers, perceptions credibility of teachers. Considering that a small number of researches have been found that are aimed at examining the problem of perception of verbal aggression of teachers in English, and none in Serbian, in the period from 2000 to 2022 it can be concluded that this problem is quite neglected in scientific and professional circles. Given that the goal of higher education institutions is to educate people who will successfully respond to practical and scientific problems in the field for which they are educated, it is important to conduct research on this issue.

Nowadays, awareness and understanding on health and well-being related to various built-environments has become a part of the responsibility of architectural designers and scientists. It was in this context that the Center for Sustainable Healthy Buildings (CSHeB) at Kyung Hee University has been nominated as an Engineering Research Center (ERC) of an Advanced Center of Excellence (ACE) by Korean Government in September of 2008. A total grant, approximately US $10 million for 7 years, has been provided by the government for the funding of CSHeB. The Center’s emphasis is based on creative research to ensure exploration of basic theory and knowledge that may lead to outstanding papers and the development of advanced technologies for sustainable building environment. The CSHeB has become one of the leading research organisations in the area concerning the built environment, emphasising the need for interdisciplinary research into architectural, medical, psychological, physiological, social, and environmental aspects of healthy buildings. Progress has been made in understanding the need for social integration, design, construction, maintenance, and occupants’ requirements for development of sustainable and healthy buildings. A number of reports and studies have been published providing the latest ‘‘state-of-the-art’’ dissemination of research relating to lighting, ventilation, social environment, indoor air quality, acoustics, thermal comfort, moisture, and structure for the built environment. The CSHeB has hosted the ‘‘2nd International Symposium on Sustainable Healthy Buildings’’ in Seoul, Korea on October 8, 2009. The symposium has highlighted the many creative research and engineering designs by the architectural scientists that will advance our missions for sustainable development from the residential to commercial scale, incorporating consideration of health performance, harmfulness caused, and energy efficiency. The 21 papers selected for publication for this special issue of Indoor and Built Environment were developed from articles initially presented at the Symposium. The main objective of the Special Issue is to publish high quality research papers that will contribute to debate and discussion on how healthy environment should be achieved within architecture to protect our natural resources and indoor environmental quality including medical aspects. This Special Issue is of interest to broad interdisciplinary readers including academics, practitioners, and consultants. The following provides the readers a brief guide to the papers included. P. Boyce presents a paper reviewing the impact of light on human health. J.T. Kim and J.A. Hoskins discuss the need for sensible assessment on the risk of asbestos materials used in Korean buildings. C. Yu, J.T. Kim, and J. Singh provide the survey requirements for environmental monitoring and investigation of sick buildings. C. Li, B. Deng and C.N. Kim examine a three-dimensional simulation method for reducing biological pollutants concentrations in a hospital isolation room by using UV light devices. H.J. Moon and Y.R. Yoon report the key factors identified by their questionnaire survey that could affect mould growth on interior surfaces in residential buildings.

Calculus plays a significant role in succeeding in various fields. In line with this, the researchers should identify the relationship between a factor that drives success in the mentioned subject, self-belief, and Calculus performance. This study aimed to determine the level of sources of self-efficacy presented by Albert Bandura, specifically mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and physiological state, in the context of students' calculus performance. The relationship between the four sources and the academic performance of the learners in the mentioned subject was also determined. The study was conducted from October 2023 to February 2024 at Cavite State University–Carmona. The participants were one hundred twenty-seven students from the programs BS Computer Engineering, BS Computer Science, and BSE-Mathematics who qualified for the limitations of this study. Descriptive and correlational research designs were utilized to attain the study's objectives. In addition, the researchers adapted and modified a mathematics self-efficacy questionnaire. Both Spearman's rho and Pearson's r were used to determine if there was a correlation between mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and physiological state, and Calculus performance. The results showed that students have low confidence or belief in their ability to perform well in Calculus when mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social or verbal persuasions, and physiological or emotional states are taken into consideration. In addition, it was found that there is a significant negative relationship between the first three mentioned sources of self-efficacy and Calculus performance. On the other hand, the physiological state has a significant positive relationship.

Food insecurity is pervasive in Allegheny County, as one in five residents experiences food insecurity. Food insecurity is linked to chronic health conditions like heart disease and hypertension and disproportionately affects women in the United States, particularly women who are head of household. There are multiple dimensions used to measure regional disparities in food accessibility. Prior research has examined the linkages between food access and food insecurity, and this study aims to explore further the relationship between equitable access to sustainable and affordable food sources. This study examines food outlets in Allegheny County to determine if there is a significant relationship between food outlet availability and food insecurity. Both the presence and accessibility of these food outlets were examined. To measure accessibility, the walking distance to the nearest public transportation stop was calculated for each public transportation stop. The minimum distance to each food outlet was compared to food insecurity rates on a census tract level. Results showed that communities without grocery stores had lower access to healthy and affordable food sources. Also, communities with a higher proportion of female-headed households experienced greater food insecurity, regardless of access to food outlets. There was no statistically significant relationship between the distance from public transportation stops to grocery stores and rates of food insecurity overall and in low-income communities. However, communities with inaccessible grocery stores, either absent in the census tract or without close public transport stops, did have even greater average rates of food insecurity if there was an above-average proportion of female-headed households. Based on these findings, it is evident there exist structural elements of the built environment that correspond with disproportionate rates of food insecurity experienced by communities with households that are predominately female headed. In addition to resource support for these marginalized groups, we suggest that sole reliance on distance as an indicator of food insecurity can be misleading. There should be a greater focus on walkability aggregated on a household or individual level within the community instead of physical distance alone at a general scale.

Civilization is the advanced social development that is believed to owe its origin to human interaction in cities. But cities do not always have a civilizing effect. In history, the size of a population has corresponded to the availability of resources, particularly food and water. Ever since the Age of Agriculture, the stability of food supplies and the relative security of group settlements have decreased mortality rate and increased fertility. The consequent increased demand leads to exploitation of resources, which invariably exceeds the accessible supply. As a result, a cyclical population decline occurs, through starvation, disease, social and economic declination, migration and war (Facing The Future: People and the Planet 1997). Historical examples abound: recurring famines, the Black Death, colonization, the two World Wars. As cities have historically been a place of gathering, of diversity and culture, trends in city planning are redefining the structure of cities into segregated zones separating the haves and the have-nots. Classified by political theorist Michael Walzer as “single-minded” spaces, most metropolises today comprise distinct business districts, industrial zones, shopping arcades, uptown residences, and lower class or racial ghettos. In contrast to “open-minded” spaces that interweave multiple functions for the masses, single-minded spaces, along with automobile dependency, promote social isolationism, in which city residents tend to minimize interaction with and within the city and the diversity thereof. In addition, the decentralization of megacities to a greater urban sprawl spring a number of design issues, including the harmonization of new business districts, mix-income residences, and land allocation for green areas. At present, urban development continues to follow the piecemeal approach, where districts are designed as an isolated project. Furthermore, infrastructure such as roads and public transportation must be considered with the environment and population density. In most of the countries (since the industrial revolution for some European countries) and in the beginning of the 1960’s in South America and Africa, it had been noticed a huge and unexpected migration from the rural to the urban areas. The attraction and migration to the urban areas can be explained by the search for a diversified environment (different ethnics, multitude of activities) offering many opportunities (in terms of jobs, leisure, health, communication, etc.) with the hope to change the social status, offer a better education to their progenitor. Certainly, this attraction has some positive aspects (amenities offered, well-being, increase of knowledge, etc.) but it has also some negative aspects from the environmental and psychological (anonymity, noise, aggression, vandalism, pollution, robbery, crimes, etc.). These negatives aspects led to a social and physical segregation of the city, usually the areas with a high-rise buildings or occupied by a low-income lack of gardens or playground for children and most of the urban furniture are damaged physically or having some graffiti on them. It seems that there is a very strong correlation between crime and density. In fact this kind of behavior is not specific to our contemporary life. Historically, and from the chronological point of the view, it was Leonardo De Vinci who tried to construct a safety space. Then the utopian who developed some spatial organizations highlighting the hygienic issues, and later Henard, Howard and Perry with their interests on the traffic problems, and public safety led to the development of a new of thinking about the production of our build environment and called Environmental Design.

This study regards the concept MENSCH in German literary and media discourses in terms of cognitive linguistics. The analysis of the conceptual content of the domain Mensch in German literary and media discourses is carried out within an anthropocentric approach, where the individual is in the very center, whereas the periphery is taken by the surrounding objects that are classified by the individual with due regard to his interests, knowledge, status, and other factors. The objective of this study is to delineate the parcelle of the concept MENSCH, its ethno specific characteristics, and the most representative elements within literary and media discourses. The initial phase of the research focused on finding all verbalizations of the concept MENSCH inside thematically cohesive and pragmatically connected text segments. The second stage aimed at grouping the concepts into suitable semantic categories, or parcelles. The purpose of the final stage was to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the domains in order to elaborate the conceptual framework of the Mensch domain. Relying on the DWDS-Kernkorpus (which contains 13,678 verbalizers with the lexeme Mensch), the study differentiates four essential parcelles: (1) Soziales Wesen (Social Creature), which comprises such domains as employment, profession, social position, relationship, and nationality; (2) Physisches Wesen (Physical Creature), which encompasses qualities related to age and gender, as well as physical components and physiological state; (3) Emotionales Wesen (Emotional Creature), which is a term identified with human emotions, routines, and passions; (4) Intelligentes Wesen (Intellectual Creature), which describes mental activity, thinking, and communication. The key concepts such as ARBEIT, GEFÜHLE, KÖRPERTEILE, SOZIALE ROLLE, and RELIGION, among others, come together to form a cognitive matrix that is composed of several layers. The research reveals that the domain MENSCH in the German language brings together notions that are targeted at comprehending an individual as a socially and intellectually evolved creature, capable of engaging in creative activity and abstract thinking. The further investigation of the issue under discussion might touch upon the attempt of ascertaining the inter-conceptual connections that will replicate certain mental dependencies, as well as generate some correlations of the meta-concept MENSCH.

Nonverbal elements are additional, non-linguistic means of communication. In literary texts (original and translated) it is actively used to describe the internal experiences, emotions of the character, the attitude of the participants in the story towards each other, and the communicative situation. The main group of non-verbal means that cause difficulties in translation are the names of color terms that depict emotions. Changes in human skin color, which the article is devoted to, are universal phenomena, characteristic of all people, reflecting the internal state of the communicant, the appearance of his physiological state. The main goal of the study is to explain the cause of translation difficulties by showing the anthropocognitive and neurobiological motivation of color vocabulary denoting emotion in the novel “Abai Zholy”. During the comparative analysis of translations, it was revealed that the names of colors in the Kazakh language representing the inner state of the character, such as «kogeru» (to get blue), «surlanu» (to get grey), «kokpenbek bop kety» (to get dark blue), «bozaru» (to get pale), «qup-qu bolu» (to get white), «qap-qara bop ketu» (to get black) were equivalent to only one lexeme "pale" in Russian, highlighting such linguistic facts, the author explains the root cause of difficulties in translation by the fact that each nation has its own intellectual instinct in recognizing emotions, which reflects paraemotional elements in the language at different levels. The physiological motivation and psychological causators of the names of colors, which describe the change in emotion in the author’s narrative in the novel “Abai Zholy,” are explained on the basis of the experimental method, that is, on the basis of the results of neurobiological analysis conducted by foreign researchers. As a result of the study, it was proven that the Kazakh people have a deep level of recognition of human emotions, therefore in the Kazakh language there are many more para-emotional words reflecting changes in facial tone than in Russian, each non-verbal element in the Kazakh language has a neurobiological basis, each people has a different level recognizing human emotions and conveying them in language, which also affects translation. Although non-verbal means in works of fiction, including somatic non-verbal structures, are widely considered in paralinguistics, difficulties with their translation and insufficient attention to the causes of translation problems emphasize the relevance of the study. The article also uses the term "intellectual instinct" for the first time in relation to translation.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) can be described as a sophisticated, spatial software that allows for combining different types of data including, but not limited to, demographics, health data, and community resources, all connected by an underlying map. The GIS can then be used to investigate various relationships, trends, and patterns between the different layers of data. In addition to analyzing various secondary data, such as census information or summarized electronic health records, utilizing geospatial technologies, for example, field mapping devices or global positioning system (GPS) units, means that a detailed insight can be gained into the health consequences of any environment. Examples of what one can determine using GIS include which health outcomes cluster around a water course; what is the most effective route for a rural patient to travel to care; or which neighborhoods, and even intersections, generate spikes in pediatric injuries. There are many GIS applications in both public health and clinical health research. In addition, several other aligned disciplines, such as sociology, social work, urban planning, and geography, use GIS to visualize and analyze geographic data that have a relevance to health phenomena. For example, GIS has been utilized to study heart disease mortality and access to hospitals (Yamashita & Kunkel. 20101: breast cancer and historical exposure to pesticides (Brody et al.. 2004): clusters of opioid prescription abuse in New Mexico (Brownstein. Green. Cassidv. & Butler. 20101: obesity and neighbor fast-food outlets (Li, Harmer, Cardinal. Bosworth, & Johnson-Shelton, 20091: and sexually transmitted diseases epidemiologic patterns in Fort Bragg, North Carolina (Zenilman et al.. 2002). The appreciation of how space and place intersect with health, and a suite of important, new geospatial technologies have opened new avenues of research and given rise to several multidisciplinary fields including medical geography, geomedicine, health geography, and geographic gerontology. In spite of having different names and sometimes different disciplinary perspectives, these fields all focus on the interrelationships between geographic/environmental attributes and health outcomes. However, the manner in which our environment affects health and wellbeing is still in its infancy in the nursing literature. This column will provide a basic introduction as to how GIS can be used as a research tool to study various nursing phenomena. We will begin by reviewing selected examples of the relatively few nursing studies that have utilized a GIS.Examples of GIS Use in the Nursing LiteratureBloch (2011! examined the correlation between the exposure to stressful environments (as indicated by crime rate and poverty) and preterm birth rate in foreign-born and United States (U.S.)-born African American mothers. Bloch studied 2000 U.S. Census data and Philadelphia crime data, using a GIS, to show how stressful neighborhoods are significantly associated with a higher prevalence of preterm birth for foreign-born and U.S.-born black mothers. Bloch established these relationships by geographically manipulating and overlaying data on births, crime, poverty, race, and nativity into common areas (census tracts). In another example, Madigan, Wiencek, and Vander Schrier (2009) used GIS to examine the availability of community-based, end-of-life care providers to the elderly in rural areas. The researchers created maps for eight states showing the distribution of community-based, end-of-life providers per 1,000 elders at the county level by degree of rurallty. The analysis showed that more than 85% of rural counties in Arkansas and Louisiana did not have end-of-life hospice providers. Madigan et al. noted that studies such as theirs provide crucial information for making social-policy decisions. It is important to recognize that Madigan et al.'s research was conducted at a different geographic scale than that of Bloch's (2011). …

ObjectivesGuided by the social ecological model, this study aimed to examine the relations of built environments (i.e., walking/cycling infrastructure, recreation facilities, neighborhood safety/crime), youth’s transition abilities, and changes of youth’s physical activity (PA) and play behaviors due to COVID-19-based restrictions. Ethnic and socioeconomic status (SES) disparities were also examined on studies variables during the COVID-19 restrictions.MethodA cross-sectional research design was used to assess an anonymous online survey completed by US parents/guardians. The final sample had 1324 children and adolescents (Meanage = 9.75; SD = 3.95; 51.3% girls), and 35.5% the families were of upper socioeconomic class (income > $150,000). Parents reported the perceived built environment and neighborhood safety, child’s PA and play behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic shelter-in-place restrictions.ResultsYouths who had access to safe built environment were more active and played more outdoor/indoor (p < .01). It was found playing behavior in yard and neighborhood were significantly increased, but community-based play behavior was significantly reduced during COVID-19 restrictions. The SEM analysis (χ2/df = 236.04/54; CFI = .966) supported indirect and direct effects of neighborhood safety on PA changes during COVID-19 restrictions, and the youth’s ability to respond to COVID-19 restrictions served as a full mediator. Low-SES and Hispanic minority youth reported significantly less safety to walking or playing in their neighborhoods than their middle-/high-SES non-Hispanic peers (p < .001). Regardless of ethnicity, the magnitude of the reduction of MVPA was significantly higher among low-SES groups than that of the high- and middle-SES groups (p < .001).ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate a need to tailor programs and policies to help high-risk groups (e.g., low SES) stay active, healthy, and resilient during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Studies show that Service Learning (SL) has a positive influence on student learning outcomes regardless of how learning is or was measured. However, literature makes it clear that, as a pedagogy, SL lacks a common definition and therefore has been described in various ways by different authors. This paper explored the knowledge and understanding of SL by third-year students and their lecturers in the Faculties of Engineering and Built Environment, Information and Communications Technology, and Humanities at a University of Technology in South Africa. Following a qualitative research design, three focus groups were held with ten students per group, and the qualitative questionnaire was administered to eight lecturers. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. The study found that SL is not well known to both lecturers and students, even those who attempted to impart their knowledge and understanding. Both lecturers and students likened SL to other programmes such as experiential learning, Work-integrated Learning (WiL), and in-service training. The study highlights the critical disconnect amid the multifaceted academic discourse on SL and the definite, practical understanding of the concept among lecturers and students by providing clear, practical recommendations that contribute to the effective implementation of SL. Institutions can benefit from SL by implementing awareness and training programs to build a foundational understanding among all stakeholders. This shifts the scholarly focus from simply defining SL to the prerequisite step of educating the academic community about its core principles, distinguishing it from other pedagogies.

Deakin University has recently moved to an academic calendar of three trimesters. This change aims to provide students with greater flexibility to plan their study around work or life commitments, create options for students to commence their degree and enable students to fast track their study. It has been found for students in the Bachelor of Construction Management that engagement and satisfaction during summer (Trimester 3) are less than when those same units are delivered during other trimesters. This research addresses the use of Supported Cloud learning to improve learning and the relationship with students. The School of Architecture and Built Environment used two units as case studies to examine different innovative unit delivery strategies that combined cloud and located learning. The research design included evaluation surveys, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews as well as reflection by participating teachers. The findings show that students’ results are improved when the cloud based learning is supported by well-developed resources, structured delivery and availability of some face-to-face contacts. This innovation will serve as a benchmark for Cloud delivery in the School in all trimesters. Keywords: Flexible Delivery, Construction Management Education, Cloud Learning, Located Learning
