An efficient license plate recognition system using convolution neural networks

Automated reading of license plate and its detection is a crucial component of the competent transportation system. Toll payment and parking management e-payment systems may benefit from this software’s features. License plate detection and identification algorithms abound, and each has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. Computer vision has advanced rapidly in terms of new breakthroughs and techniques thanks to the emergence and proliferation of deep learning principles across several branches of AI. The practice of automating the monitoring process in traffic management, parking management, and police surveillance has become much more effective thanks to the development of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR). Even though license plate recognition (LPR) is a technology that is extensively utilized and has been developed, there is still a significant amount of work to be done before it can achieve its full potential. In the last several years, there have been substantial advancements in both the scientific community’s methodology and its level of efficiency. In this era of deep learning, there have been numerous developments and techniques established for LPR, and the purpose of this research is to review and examine those developments and approaches. In light of this, the authors of this study suggest a four-stage technique to automated license plate detection and identification (ALPDR), which includes, image pre-processing, license plate extraction, character segmentation, and character recognition. And the first three phases are known as “extraction,” “pre-processing,” and “segmentation,” and each of these processes has been shown to benefit from its own unique technique. In light of the fact that character recognition is an essential component of license plate identification and detection, the Convolution Neural Network (CNN), MobileNet, Inception V3, and ResNet 50 have all been put through their paces in this regard.

Traffic control and vehicle owner identification become major problems in Bangladesh. Most of the time it is difficult to identify the driver or the owner of the vehicles who violate the traffic rules or do any accidental work on the road. Moreover, it is very time-consuming for a traffic police officer to physically check the license plate of every vehicle. So, an automatic license plate recognition system is a much-needed solution to solve these problems. The existing Bangla license plate recognition systems are mostly based on character segmentation and these methods are not implemented in real-time. In this study, two separate Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) models are used to identify the license plate and the characters on the license plate from the real-time video streaming. The first CNN model detects the license plate from the live video of a vehicle on the road. Than it crop the license plate area from the video frames. The cropped frame is then fed into the second CNN to detect the characters on that license plate. The characters are detected as individual objects. After detecting all the characters and numbers on the license plate, they are rearranged according to their position on the plate. To train the proposed model total of 292 images are collected used. Moreover, an open-sourced Bangla handwritten character dataset named BanglaLekha-Isolated is also used to train the model with synthetic character data. The trained model is tested using 18 live videos and 6 still image data. Finally, the proposed methodology gains a 100% precision on detecting the license plate, and 91.67% precision for detecting the characters on the license plate for the given test dataset.

With the increasing advancement of science and technology, the popularity of automobiles in my country has gradually increased. Among them, license plate positioning and license plate recognition technology are very important key technologies in the license plate recognition system. Through the license plate positioning technology, the position information, centroid and other data information of the license plate can be obtained, so as to realize the positioning of the license plate. The license plate recognition technology can extract the uniqueness of the vehicle. Identifying the license plate number, so the design and implementation of vehicle recognition and license plate recognition technology based on embedded devices have practical significance and practical application value to promote the technological progress of intelligent transportation and vehicle recognition systems. This design is a license plate recognition system, an embedded character segmentation recognition processing platform with ARM Cortex-A9 as the core, and the method of cross-compiling OpenCV, Qt, BootLoader in the Linux operating system, and transplanting related drivers to the ARM Cortex-A9 platform; Based on the classic algorithm, the OpenCV library function is used to realize the segmentation and recognition of the license plate image characters. The experimental results show that the design has achieved the expected goal.

Any vehicle license plate recognition system consists of three main components which include plate detection, character segmentation, and character recognition. The main theme of this paper is the improvement and innovation in the recognition of license plate characters. The assessments and the comparison between the performances of the methods proposed in this paper and the previous methods have all been done on one database and in similar software and hardware environments. The database includes about 20000 characters which have been extracted by license plate recognition systems from images obtained in real situations, i.e. day, night, and different distances and angles. This database contains low-resolution (20 × 12) characters, and also includes images with noise, distortion and omission. In a review and evaluation of different methods that use the support vector machine (SVM) to enhance the separation process, the MLP-SVM approach has been found to be one of the best. This method has recognized all the characters of a license plate with an accuracy of 95.86% in an average time of 92.9 ms. In this paper, to improve the character recognition, two methods based on combining probabilistic classifiers with the SVM have been proposed, and the outcome is the achievement of 96.7% accuracy and an average time of 57.4 ms.

The license plate recognition technology is an important part of the construction of an intelligent traffic management system. This paper mainly researches the image preprocessing, license plate location, and character segmentation in the license plate recognition system. In the preprocessing part of the image, the edge detection method based on convolutional neural network (CNN) is used for edge detection. In the design of the license plate location, this paper proposes a location method based on a combination of mathematical morphology and statistical jump points. First, the license plate area is initially located using mathematical morphology-related operations and then the location of the license plate is accurately located using statistical jump points. Finally, the plate with tilt is corrected. In the process of character segmentation, the border and delimiter are first removed, then the character vertical projection method and the character boundary are used to segment the character for actually using cases.

Vehicle License Plate Recognition (VLPR) is an essential part of License Plate Recognition Systems (LPRS) that are intelligent and automated to be applicable in fields that involve traffic management, toll collection, and vehicle monitoring. These systems are different from traditional license plate recognition systems, as the techniques used are artificial intelligence (AI) based, which includes deep learning techniques in this case. The system in this paper highly relies on AI-based methods, such as conventional neural networks and other pre-processing techniques that transformed the system to become more accurate and reliable in real time. In scenarios where the issue depends on the environment, traditional systems give low-precision results, while the system used in this research allows us to get better results despite challenges that occur due to bad lighting and weather. The images detected can be filled with noise, unnecessary obstructions and details. Pre-processing is used to prepare the image before the recognition phase, resulting in 98.5% more accurate license plate detection consistently. The reliability of the system is also increased by the advanced technologies used that give 3.4% better results than the results given by OCR-based conventional license plate recognition systems. Datasets with low-resolution quality images train the system to work efficiently in the practical world while making the model a viable option for automated surveillance systems. Furthermore, we have successfully integrated the system into a web interface that allows the user to use the system to its full potential. The interface allows the user to search and gather information on the owner of the vehicle that they have inquired about. The process includes feeding an image to the system as it did originally, then it takes the image to process the details and extract the number plate, and then it runs a search throughout the database, providing the authorized information of the owner.

On the streets of Taiwan, many roadside tollers are often seen riding motorcycles in one hand, and the other hand holding mobile devices to issue payment notices for cars and motorcycles parked on the roadsides. The work of roadside tollers is very dangerous. First, they must first park their motorcycles next to the roadside cars and motorcycles. They then use their eyes to confirm the license plate number, enter the license plate number into the mobile device, and finally place the bill on the car’s windows or attach the bill to the motorcycles. Our idea is to implement an automated license plate recognition system in mobile devices to increase the efficiency of roadside tollers and reduce their time on the road. Recently, license plate recognition systems have been widely used in various aspects of life, such as parking lot toll systems, access management systems, and traffic management systems. However, existing license plate recognition systems must have good recognition rates under a number of constraints, such as fixed angles and fixed light sources. Moreover, due to the insufficient computing resources of the general mobile device, the application cannot have a good recognition rate in the complex environment or skewed angle in the license plate recognition. Therefore, this paper proposes a lightweight and high-performance multi-angle license plate character recognition model, which reduces the complexity and computational complexity of traditional license plate recognition. This paper also collects a large number of license plate images from different environments, angles and sizes as training data. Finally, we propose an optimized deep learning model to identify the characters on license plates. The experimental results show that the proposed model can recognize the license plate with a tilt of 0~60 degrees, and the overall recall rate is 84.5%. Compared with Tiny-YOLOv2, the computation of the proposed model is reduced by 61% with a little penalty of recall.

The intent of this research is to design a license plate recognition (LPR) system in the domain of Bangla language for smart vehicle management. The proposed system is designed on the basis of computer vision tools and deep supervised machine learning model. The system has three modules: license plate detection, character segmentation and recognition of the characters of the License Plate (LP). The goal of detection is to localize the plate area from the vehicle image and to crop region of interest (LP). It is executed by applying following process: preprocessing the image, conversion to binary image, contour detection and filtering the contours to get the LP's character contours, tilt correction and cropping the plate area from the image. Then, the cropped LP is segmented to extract the characters from the plate. Finally, the recognition step classifies the characters by means of deep convolution neural network where the features of the character are crafted and learned by the convolution layers of the networks. The system is implemented in Python OpenCV environment for offline car license plates images which are taken in different illuminations, road scenarios and colored cars. The system performance is evaluated in terms of detection rate, segmentation rate, recognition rate and execution time. The results illustrate that the performance of the system is remarkable.

Operator context scanning to support high segmentation rates for real time license plate recognition

Accurate and fast recognition of license plates is one of the most important challenges in the field of license plate recognition systems. Due to the high frame rate of surveillance cameras, old license plate recognition systems cannot be used in real-time applications. On the other hand, the presence of natural and artificial noise and different light and weather conditions make the detection and recognition process of these systems challenging. In this paper, an end-to-end method for efficiently detecting and recognizing plates is presented. In the proposed method, vehicles are first detected using a single-shot detector- (SSD-) based deep learning model in the video frames and the input images. This will increase the speed and accuracy in identifying the location of the plate in the given images. Then, the location of the plate is identified using the proposed architecture based on convolutional networks. Finally, using a deep convolutional network and long short-term memory (LSTM), the characters related to the plate are recognized. An advantage of our method is that the proposed deep network is trained using different images with different qualities that leads to high performance in detecting and recognizing plates. Also, considering that in the proposed method the vehicles are first detected and then the plate is detected in the vehicle image, there is no limit in the number of identified plates. Moreover, plate detection in the vehicle rectangle, instead of the whole frame, speeds up our method. The proposed method is evaluated using several databases. The first part of the evaluation focuses on robustness and recognition speed. The proposed method has the accuracy of 100% for vehicle detection, 100% for plate detection, and 99.37% for character recognition. In the second part of evaluation, the proposed method is evaluated in terms of overall speed. The experimental results witness that the proposed method is capable of processing 30 frames per second without losing any data and also outperforms several methods proposed in recent years, in terms of time and accuracy.

In urban environments, the issue of unauthorized parking in designated no-parking zones persists, leading to traffic congestion and safety hazards. inaccurate license plate recognition, License plate (LP) detection is a crucial task for Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) systems. Most existing LP detection networks can detect License plates, but their accuracy suffers when license plates (LPs) are tilted or deformed due to perspective distortion. This leading to difficulties in identifying vehicle owners. To address this challenge, this project present TraceMe, a predictive system utilizing advanced machine learning algorithms. The system employs YOLOv8 for efficient object detection, focusing on identifying vehicles in no-parking zones, and Tesseract OCR for accurate license plate recognition. The extracted license plate information is then processed by a machine learning model trained to predict the owner of the vehicle. The proposed system involves collecting and annotating a diverse dataset, training YOLOv8 and LPRNet model for vehicle number plate detection, utilizing Tesseract OCR for license plate extraction, and implementing a machine learning model for owner identification. Real-time processing and integration with surveillance systems allow for immediate identification of unauthorized parking incidents. The system generates alerts or notifications, aiding law enforcement in enforcing parking regulations.TraceMe not only provides a technological solution to mitigate unauthorized parking but also contributes to improved traffic management and public safety.

Efficient and accurate license plate recognition (LPR) in unconstrained environments remains a critical challenge, particularly when confronted with skewed imaging angles and the limited computational capabilities of edge devices. In this study, we propose a high-performance, FPGA-based license plate alignment and recognition (LPAR) system to address these issues. Our LPAR system integrates lightweight deep learning models, including YOLOv4-tiny for license plate detection, a refined convolutional pose machine (CPM) for pose estimation and alignment, and a modified LPRNet for character recognition. By restructuring the pose estimation and alignment architectures to enhance the geometric correction of license plates and adding channel and spatial attention mechanisms to LPRNet for better character recognition, the proposed LPAR system improves recognition accuracy from 88.33% to 95.00%. The complete pipeline achieved a processing speed of 2.00 frames per second (FPS) on a resource-constrained FPGA platform, demonstrating its practical viability for real-time deployment in edge computing scenarios.

Character segmentation is a necessary preprocessing step for character recognition in many license plate recognition systems. It is important because incorrectly segmented characters are less likely to be recognized correctly. In this article segmentation scheme of Indian LP has been proposed with some unconventional and easy-to implement technique — The connected component analysis. In this paper the first part is taken into consideration some preprocessing operations and the second part is for connected component analysis by means of labelling algorithm, aspect ratio analysis and pixel count analysis. By using the corresponding co-ordinates, characters are extracted from the license plate. Results for this method are promising even in tough conditions.

In today's world automatic license plate recognition play an important role in monitoring and organizing vehicles. In this paper, we propose a method of detecting and recognizing the license plates of vehicles in an automatic way in our country. The system can be used to collect toll, in car parking and find stolen vehicles. We have used different image processing techniques like resizing image, image binarization, connected component analysis, image enhancement and noise filtering. Our system is composed of four main modules, such as detection of the license plate area, extraction of license plate. Then, segmentation of characters and words and finally recognition of the characters and words. As Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) imposed a common standard for vehicle license plate, the size and aspect ratio of all license plates are same. We have used a threshold value to detect and extract the license plate based on our analysis. Afterward, for character segmentation, we used connected components. Later, we used deep learning tool ‘the Convolutional Neural Network’ for character recognition. Due to the lack of a standard data set, we have developed a customized dataset of Bangladeshi number plate for the implementation of our method. The accuracy of our proposed system is 95.42%.

Image processing-based vehicle recognition is one of the important research fields in ITS. The existing methods are all based on license plate recognition and car shape recognition. Their common problem is algorithm stability. And the license plates are easy to be changed. All information about vehicles should be used to recognize them reliably. A problem to be solved is to find a method to recognize vehicles besides license plate recognition and vehicle model recognition. Vehicle license plate location and character segmentation are critical steps in the license plate recognition system, and yet there are difficult problems to be solved.
