An Enhanced Super-Peer Model for Digital Library Construction

The digital library field is recently broadening its scope of applicability and it is also continuously adapting to the frequent changes occurring in the internet society. Accordingly, digital libraries are slightly moving from a controlled environment accessible only to professionals and domain-experts, to environments accessible to casual users that want to exploit the potentialities offered by the digital library technology. These new trends require, for instance, new search paradigms to be offered, new media content to be managed, and new description extraction techniques to be used.Building digital library applications, and effectively adapting them to new emerging trends, requires to develop a platform that offers standard and powerful building blocks to support application developers. In this paper we discuss our experience of using MILOS, a multimedia content management system oriented to the construction of digital libraries, to build a demanding application dedicated to non-professional users. Specifically, we discuss the design and implementation of an on-line photo album (PhotoBook), which is a digital library application that allows people to manage their own photos, to share them with friends, and to make them publicly available and searchable.PhotoBook, uses a complex internal metadata schema (MPEG-7) and allows users to simply express complex queries (combining similarity search and fielded search), enabling them to retrieve material of interest even if metadata are imprecise or missing.KeywordsDigital LibrarySimilarity SearchMultimedia ContentMulti Medium ServerMetadata SchemaThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This community service activity under the scheme of applying science and technology for the community is in partnership with the village of Tegal Harum, Denpasar Bali, in the field of digital library management. The Sastra Mahottama Library in Tegal Harum Village, apart from providing conventional services, also provides digital library services through the SIPESAT application (Digital Library Application) in Tegal Harum Village, which makes it easier for people to borrow various types of e-books according to their needs. Problems faced by the library managers are related to the classification and cataloguing of library materials, as well as increasing the capacity of human resources for digital library managers. The implementation using the classical and individual methods lasts for one month at the Tegal Harum village office. Activities consist of situation analysis, training, and evaluation stages. The implications of service activities are the results of the classification and cataloguing of 30% of reading collections as well as increasing knowledge and skills in using digital library applications.

The increasing reliance on digital library applications in higher education has significantly reshaped how university students in Peru access academic resources. While digital libraries provide on-demand access to scholarly articles, e-books, and research databases, disparities in technological infrastructure, digital literacy, and institutional policies continue to affect their effectiveness in bridging information access gaps. This study evaluates the impact of digital library applications on university students in Peru, examining accessibility, usability, and engagement patterns across urban and rural institutions. Through surveys, usage analytics, and case studies, this research highlights the key advantages of digital libraries, including enhanced search efficiency, remote accessibility, and AI-driven research support, while also identifying persistent challenges such as connectivity limitations, complex user interfaces, and digital literacy gaps. Findings indicate that urban students benefit more from digital library platforms due to better internet access and institutional support, while students in rural regions continue to rely on traditional libraries due to infrastructural constraints. The study also explores best practices for increasing student engagement, including faculty integration of digital resources, digital literacy training, and mobile-friendly platform enhancements. Finally, recommendations for policy interventions and technological innovations, such as low-bandwidth digital access solutions and AI-powered academic assistants, are proposed to improve digital library utilization. The study concludes that while digital libraries have great potential to enhance information accessibility, their effectiveness remains contingent on infrastructure development, institutional adoption strategies, and student training programs.

This chapter aims to promote discussion and collaboration between developers of computer support for collaborative learning (CSCL) environments, digital library developers and user communities. Many CSCL environments pull together a variety of digital library-like content, in effect, creating purpose-built digital libraries. The chapter looks for a group of researchers and practitioners who are willing to work together in a workshop to identify challenges and opportunities for the integration of a variety of CSCL environments and digital library applications. Digital libraries typically offer access to a managed collection of electronic information, with associated services, and are rapidly emerging as promising teaching and learning tools in a variety of disciplines. The workshop is designed primarily for people involved in such ongoing research and practice but is open to the general CSCL audience. All workshop organizers have extensive experience with digital libraries.

In this case on campus, UNWAHA has some wall magazine that contains many interesting writings such as novels, short stories, and others, but the works received less response and interest from students by providing a media or container that is easy and appropriate can be used as a solution to increase the interest of a writer and reader in publishing and enjoying a paper. And the media is Digital Library, a digital library application equipped with a Text to speech feature to attract readers. This research aims to design and build the digital library application on a website basis. The application is built with the Codeigniter framework while the database used is the MySQL. And from the User side of either Author or Reader, they can easily publish their work and they can also enjoy the work easily.

In this paper, we investigate issues of performance management in Digital Libraries. We defined a management architecture for measuring and monitoring the behavior of digital libraries as they operate, so that we can make performance conclusions using real life digital library load. Our architecture can be easily applied on any digital library system, introducing minimal overhead to digital library performance, and requiring minimal changes to the digital library code. We implemented this architecture over a testbed of Dienst servers using real data and workload. We defined the relevant parameters for investigating the performance of the servers and we made visualization tools to study the performance results. We also demonstrated how the performance results can be used by the digital library itself, to produce advanced unattended operations, like load balancing and dynamic timeout adaptation. PurposeThis study aims to investigate the relationship between the concreteness of searching module icons and their effectiveness in Iranian digital library applications.Design/methodology/approachThis study was a correlational survey whose participants consisted of two groups, namely, users and experts. The former consisted of 174 users, all of whom were included because of their scarcity, and the latter included ten experts of knowledge and information science. First, the effective and non-effective icons were identified by users. Then, their concreteness was investigated by the expert participants.FindingsThe results of the study showed a significant relationship between the concreteness of icons and their effectiveness, meaning that the more concrete, the more effective the icon was, and vice versa. Furthermore, it was shown that the effective icons were representational and semi-abstract, whereas non-effective ones were very abstract.Practical implicationsThe designers, especially digital library practitioners, should use icons that distinguish themselves as effective icons, and avoid using non-effective ones. It is suggested that they apply representational icons more.Social implicationsThe designers of mobile interfaces and public environments, such as social networks, transportation systems and so forth, can use icons in their user interfaces that are more effective when they are perceived with more concreteness.Originality/valueThe investigation of the relation between the concreteness of icons and their effectiveness may help determine effective and non-effective icons. It can also be of help to designers to satisfy user needs and improve their site’s performance through using effective icons.


 
 The progress of data systems in the current global era is very meaningful because at this time an institution or industry is not free from the use of PCs as a tool to help process information. Data systems using very advanced and modern PC technology will make it easier for us to carry out information processing that can save time, space and costs. This research uses a qualitative research approach. In terms of terminology for Baydan and Taylor, a qualitative approach is a research method that produces descriptive information in the form of recorded words or words. This research shows that UINSU has carried out the development of a library data system, namely the digital library of UIN North Sumatra. The Digital Library application used by the UIN North Sumatra Medan library is an integrated application where each part of the management of bibliotech collections and consumer services is connected to each other.

Nowadays, the information access on the Web is a main problem in the computer science community. Any major advance in the field of information access on the Web requires the collaboration of different methodologies and research areas. In this paper, the concept of aggregation operator playing a role for information access on the Web is analyzed. We present some Web methodologies, as search engines, recommender systems, and Web quality evaluation models and analyze the way aggregation operators help toward the success of their activities. We also show an application of the aggregation operators in digital libraries. In particular, we introduce a Web information system to analyze the quality of digital libraries that implements an important panel of aggregation operators to obtain the quality assessments. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper explores the integration of text mining and data mining techniques, digital library systems, and computational and data grid technologies with the objective of developing an online classification service exemplar. We discuss the current research issues relating to the use of data mining algorithms and toolkits for textual data; the necessary changes within the Cheshire3 Information Framework to accommodate analysis workflows; the outcomes of a demonstrator based on the National Library of Medicine's Medline dataset; and the provision of comparable metrics for evaluation purposes. The prototype has resulted in extremely accurate online classification services and offers a novel method of supporting text mining and data mining within a highly scaled computational environment, integrated seamlessly into the digital library architecture.

Technology usage is changing rapidly and is becoming a more mobile, more social and more multimedia-based experience. This is especially true in the area of content creation where mobile social applications used by crowds of people are challenging traditional ways of creating and distributing content, especially for applications like news dissemination. Libraries have traditionally functioned as repositories where the information content of a society is analysed, curated, organised and stored, acting as a permanent record of what is to be remembered from a society. How can this function be achieved by present-day libraries attempting to cope with mobile, social, multimedia content who's nature and utility of which change the type of information we wish to curate and store? This information is both dynamic and organic, posing challenges to the more fixed models of information in digital libraries. In this article we describe two digital library systems that archive video content from the sports domain, and which support user annotations and merging of diverse information sources in an integrated way. We report on analysis of the deployment of these two systems and highlight how they extend the traditional role of a (digital) library.

This research study examines how digital library technologies are transforming access to information in educational and public settings. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while secondary data were gathered from academic articles, reports, and case studies on digital library development. The analysis shows that digital library technologies provide easy and quick access to a wide range of resources, including e-books, journals, research papers, and multimedia content. Users appreciate the convenience, search efficiency, and 24/7 availability offered by these platforms. However, the study also identifies key challenges such as slow internet connectivity, lack of digital skills, limited device access, and occasional technical issues within digital library systems. Overall, the findings reveal that digital libraries play a significant role in improving learning and research by making information more accessible and organized. The study concludes that continued technological improvements, user training, and better digital infrastructure can further enhance the effectiveness of digital library services. Furthermore, the study highlights the growing importance of digital library technologies in bridging the gap between traditional information systems and modern user needs. As educational institutions and libraries continue to adopt digital platforms, the role of user-friendly interfaces, reliable digital infrastructure, and well-organized content becomes increasingly crucial. The findings suggest that with proper technological support and digital literacy programs, digital libraries can significantly enhance knowledge accessibility for diverse user groups. This research encourages institutions to invest in continuous upgrades, user training, and innovative digital tools to ensure that digital libraries remain effective, inclusive, and future-ready.

The modern knowledge economy has transformed library and information organizations to adopt and embrace digital social media platforms. Proliferation and growth of social media and social networking technologies continue to play pivotal roles in establishment and operation of digital library and information systems in organizations. The purpose of the chapter is to examine the extent to which information professionals and practitioners understand the impact of social media and social networking technologies on digital library and information systems. The author also analyzes how information professionals manage and promote the adherence to copyright and intellectual property laws in digital library contexts. This chapter specifically discusses the rationale for social media and social networking in digital library and information systems; emerging social media platforms and their applications; legal aspects of social media, copyright and intellectual property protection, and risk management; as well as professional ethics and guidance on social media.
