Abstract

An experimental study of leading edge vortex breakdown on a family of delta wings is currently being conducted at the University of Notre Dame. Flow visualization and imaging processing techniques were used to measure the location of vortex breakdown as a function of angle of attack or roll angle. Both static and dynamic experiments were conducted. The models were driven through dynamic pitch sweeps for a zero roll angle, and for a fixed angle of attack the models were driven through dynamic roll sweeps. This paper reviews the results obtained for a 65 swept wing. Two models were used in the study, both models had the same leading edge sweep but different leading edge geometries. A centerbody was added to the delta wing to examine its influence on vortex breakdown location. Results are presented that show the influence of the leading edge geometry and the centerbody on the static and dynamic location of vortex breakdown. For the dynamic models, vortex breakdown was found to lag the corresponding location from static experiments. Data is presented that shows the influence of the motion amplitude and reduced frequency on the vortex hysteresis.
