SummaryComputer simulations may ingest and generate high numbers of raw data files. Most of these files follow a de facto standard format established by the application domain, for example, Flexible Image Transport System for astronomy. Although these formats are supported by a variety of programming languages, libraries, and programs, analyzing thousands or millions of files requires developing specific programs. Database management systems (DBMS) are not suited for this, because they require loading the raw data and structuring it, which becomes heavy at large scale. Systems like NoDB, RAW, and FastBit have been proposed to index and query raw data files without the overhead of using a database management system. However, these solutions are focused on analyzing one single large file instead of several related files. In this case, when related files are produced and required for analysis, the relationship among elements within file contents must be managed manually, with specific programs to access raw data. Thus, this data management may be time‐consuming and error‐prone. When computer simulations are managed by a scientific workflow management system (SWfMS), they can take advantage of provenance data to relate and analyze raw data files produced during workflow execution. However, SWfMS registers provenance at a coarse grain, with limited analysis on elements from raw data files. When the SWfMS is dataflow‐aware, it can register provenance data and the relationships among elements of raw data files altogether in a database, which is useful to access the contents of a large number of files. In this paper, we propose a dataflow approach for analyzing element data from several related raw data files. Our approach is complementary to the existing single raw data file analysis approaches. We use the Montage workflow from astronomy and a workflow from Oil and Gas domain as data‐intensive case studies. Our experimental results for the Montage workflow explore different types of raw data flows like showing all linear transformations involved in projection simulation programs, considering specific mosaic elements from input repositories. The cost for raw data extraction is approximately 3.7% of the total application execution time. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In several working environments, production involves repeated executions of certain procedures. A workflow describes the individual tasks performed in these procedures and their interrelationships. Current workflow management systems (WFMSs) use a database management system (DBMS) to store task descriptions, and implement all workflow functionality in modules that run on top of the DBMS. Motivated by scientific workflows, we propose a much more DBMS-centric architecture, in which conventional database technology provides much of the desired scientific WFMS functionality. A key element of our approach is viewing the workflow as a web of data objects interconnected with active links that carry process descriptions. The workflow is fully defined as a database schema, and its execution is the gradual buildup of an instance of this schema through the active object links. For our work, we use the modeling and querying tools of Horse, the object-oriented DBMS that we have developed in the context of the Zoo Desktop Experiment Management Environment.

Functionality, complexity, heterogeneity and dynamism in computing environment are increasing day by day. This enhanced utility of computers has a profound impact on the systempsilas brittleness, manageability and security. Self-management is important in systems, networks, communication as well as in Database Management Systems (DBMSs). Autonomic computing reduces the problems and increases accuracy and efficiency of the DBMSs. Recent years have seen an upsurge in research related to incorporation of autonomic computing within the computing systems. IBM is working on autonomic computing in systems and DBMSs from last many years. The paper discussed the autonomic features and tools in DB2 from the literature available up to 2002. Our paper presents an extension of that paper which covers available autonomic features, components, utilities and tools up till now. A comparison of DB2 with Oracle is presented w.r.t autonomic computing. We have also identified the optional and essential human intervention (HI) in autonomic components, utilities and tools of IBM Universal Database DB2 that reveals the degree of autonomic computing in these.

A survey of database management in engineering

Numerous manufacturing and service organizations have integrated or are considering integration of their respective occupational health and safety management and audit systems into the International Organization for Standardization-based (ISO) audit-driven Quality Management Systems (ISO 9000) or Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14000) models. Companies considering one of these options will likely need to identify and evaluate several key factors before embarking on such efforts. The purpose of this article is to identify and address the key factors through a case study approach. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons of the key features of the American Industrial Hygiene Association ISO-9001 harmonized Occupational Health and Safety Management System with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. management and audit system were conducted. The comparisons showed that the two management systems and their respective audit protocols, although structured differently, were not substantially statistically dissimilar in content. The authors recommend that future studies continue to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various audit protocols. Ideally, these studies would identify those audit outcome measures that can be reliably correlated with health and safety performance.

The database system is critical in information management because it has the ability to significantly improve information organization accuracy and productivity. To protect against business competitors, business units currently need more knowledge and technological data. In solving this issue for companies, the database management system plays a major role. However, traditional database management systems usually struggle to cope competently with the overwhelming number of data and knowledge, generating the obstacle of information apprehension. This paper therefore proposes an incorporated method by integrating artificial intelligence technique with the computer database for the development of an information management system for scientific research. In the suggested method, the information modeling of the framework has three stages of construction. This research also includes a case study of the integrating computer database for collecting research data.

The V 3 Video Server is a demonstration showing a multimedia application developed on top of the VODAK database management system. VODAK is a prototype of an object-oriented and distributed database management system (DBMS) developed at GMD-IPSI. The V 3 Video Server allows a user to interactively store, retrieve, manipulate, and present analog and short digital video clips. A video clip consists of a sequence of pictures and corresponding sound. Several attributes like author, title, and a set of keywords are annotated. The highlights of the demonstration are as follows. (1) It is shown that an object-oriented database management systems is very useful for the development of multimedia applications. (2) The video server gives valuable hints for the development of an object-oriented database management system in direction to a multimedia database management system .

The purpose of this paper is to present a computerized integrated project management system and report results of a survey on the effectiveness of the system. The system consists of a scheduling system, material management system, labor/equipment system, and safety/quality control system. The backbone system is a scheduling system that adopts a production planning system and a project scheduling system. The lowest level in the scheduling system is a daily work management system, which is linked to each functional management system (i.e. material management system, labor/equipment system, and safety/quality control system). The paper focuses on the material management and scheduling systems to implement a material “pull” system to reduce material inventories on site. Details of material management and scheduling systems are discussed, and a sample application is presented to demonstrate the features of the proposed computer application system. The paper presents practitioners and researchers with a practical tool to integrate material management and scheduling systems for site personnel.

7-1-7: an organising principle, target, and accountability metric to make the world safer from pandemics

Very powerful data base management systems (DBMS) now exist which allow medical personnel access to patient record data bases. DBMS's make it easy to retrieve either complete or abbreviated records of patients with similar characteristics. In addition, statistics on data base records are immediately accessible. However, the price of this power is a large computer with the inherent problems of access, response time, and reliability. If a general purpose, time-shared computer is used to get this power, the response time to a request can be either rapid or slow, depending upon loading by other users. Furthermore, if the computer is accessed via dial-up telephone lines, there is competition with other users for telephone ports. If either the DBMS or the host machine is replaced, the medical users, who are typically not sophisticated in computer usage, are forced to learn the new system. Microcomputers, because of their low cost and adaptability, lend themselves to a solution of these problems. A microprocessor-based intelligent terminal has been designed and implemented at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine to provide a transparent interface between the user and his data base. The intelligent terminal system includes multiple microprocessors, floppy disks, a CRT terminal, and a printer. Users interact with the system at the CRT terminal using menu selection (framing). The system translates the menu selection into the query language of the DBMS and handles all actual communication with the DBMS and its host computer, including telephone dialing and sign on procedures, as well as the actual data base query and response. Retrieved information is stored locally for CRT display, hard copy production, and/or permanent retention. Microprocessor-based communication units provide security for sensitive medical data through encryption/decryption algorithms and high reliability error detection transmission schemes. Highly modular software design permits adapation to a different DBMS and/or host computer with only minor localized software changes. Importantly, this portability is completely transparent to system users. Although the terminal system is independent of the host computer and its DBMS, it has been linked to a UNIVAC 1108 computer supporting MRI's SYSTEM 2000 DBMS.

For the purposes of this discussion, I would like to define tuning as the adjustment of the variables in a generalized system to optimize it for a particular environment. The generalized systems we are talking about are called Generalized Data Base Management Systems or GDBMS, and I am going to talk about one of these: IBM's Information Management System, or IMS.

Requirements for management of aerospace engineering data

In the last decades databases have been growing rapidly in scale and complexity. High performance, availability and further service level agreements need to be satisfied under any circumstances to please customers. Achieved database management system’s (DBMS) performance highly depends on individual skills of expensive database administrators (DBAs) who need to have deep knowledge about the DBMS itself, the application stack on top of the DBMS, and the application domain in general. Our goal, therefore, is to develop a framework enabling administrators to formalize and exchange their tuning knowledge in a community and let the system act autonomously according to this knowledge. This contribution proposes a Tuning Policy Language and gives an insight into the underlying policy model. This model is a basis for a tuning coordination component that is responsible for an advanced tuning control and provides an interface for the administrator.

International research collaborations access and integrate data collected in different countries. For different reasons, e.g., legislation, data owners need to control who has access to and how their data are analyzed. The analysis of data is performed in statistical software, which is usually called on top of a data management system, e.g., a database management system (DBMS). Therefore access to data is controlled by the DBMS, while statistical analyses are usually controlled by another system. To improve security we propose a novel architecture for executing statistical analysis on data stored in a DBMS. In the proposed architecture the statistical software is called from a DBMS. The architecture allows control of both data retrieval and statistical data analysis from one system, i.e., DBMS. We implemented a prototype for executing analysis programs by calling statistical software SAS from a relational DBMS IBM DB2 over data stored in DB2 database. This paper describes the proposed architecture and the implemented prototype.

Introduction. The banking sector assigns high priority to data storage, as it is a critical aspect of business operations. The volume of data in this area is steadily growing. With the increasing volume of data that needs to be stored, processed and analyzed, it is critically important to select a suitable data storage solution and develop the required architecture. The presented research is aimed at filling the gap in the existing knowledge of the data base management system (DBMS) suitable for the banking sector, as well as to suggest ways for a fault-tolerant data storage cluster. The purpose of the work is to analyze the key DBMS for analytical queries, determine the priorities of the DBMS for the banking sector, and develop a fault-tolerant data storage cluster. To meet the performance and scalability requirements, a data storage solution with a fault-tolerant architecture that meets the requirements of the banking sector has been proposed.Materials and Methods. Domain analysis allowed us to create a set of characteristics that a DBMS for analytical queries (OnLine Analytical processing — OLAP) should correspond to, compare some popular DBMS OLAP, and offer a fault-tolerant cluster configuration written in xml, supported by the ClickHouse DBMS. Automation was done using Ansible Playbook. It was integrated with the Gitlab version control system and Jinja templates. Thus, rapid deployment of the configuration on all nodes of the cluster was achieved.Results. For OLAP databases, criteria were developed and several popular systems were compared. As a result, a reliable cluster configuration that met the requirements of analytical queries has been proposed for the banking industry. To increase the reliability and scalability of the DBMS, the deployment process was automated. Detailed diagrams of the cluster configuration were also provided.Discussion and Conclusions. The compiled criteria for the DBMS OLAP allowed us to determine the need for this solution in the organization. Comparison of popular DBMS can be used by organizations to minimize costs when selecting a solution. The proposed configuration of the data warehouse cluster for analytical queries in the banking sector will improve the reliability of the DBMS and meet the requirements for subsequent scalability. Automation of cluster deployment by the mechanism of templating configuration files in Ansible Playbook provides configuring a ready-made cluster on new servers in minutes.
