R2P: an Open Source Modular Architecture for Rapid Prototyping of Robotics Applications

Computer Science is being increasingly used in medicine to improve quality of care and patient outcome. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) that codify clinical Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and provide situation-specific advice to physicians CDSSs have shown effectiveness in reducing adverse patient outcomes during clinical evaluations. However, representing both the BPG and the associated physical processes in software is complex and tedious, making CDSSs prone to bugs. This can be mitigated using a modular software architecture that encapsulates computational representation of physical processes for finer-grained development and verification leading to improved comprehensibility, shareability and maintainability. This paper discusses the sources of complexity in CDSSs, and proposes a software architecture that consists of an encoding of the BPG's medical knowledge into executable representations comprising of a patient digital twin, diagnosis and treatment workflows, an adherence monitor, a User Interface (UI) and a middleware for seamless integration with existing Hospital Information Systems. We developed a CDSS for Pediatric Sepsis Management co-designed by physicians using our approach. We use the Fluid Resuscitation therapy of this CDSS as a case study to illustrate the development process.

An architecture which seamlessly integrates multiple audio decoders onto a single DSP is presented. A new concept in the form of an open software architecture is implemented which allows third party owned intellectual property in the form of specialized software modules to coexist as value-added post decoder processing phases. This modular software architecture maintains flexibility and adaptability for future decoder and post processing integration. The means by which this architecture supports post processing functions across decoders is the focus of this paper.

Chapter 8 - The integrated architecture of typical avionics systems

The article describes basic principles of creating software tools for monitoring and parameter visualization in computer control system of industrial robots. Concept of creating extendable data monitoring subsystem with open modular software architecture purposed. Architectural models, algorithms and software implementation of control system components on key levels of hierarchy such as collecting diagnosis data in real-time subsystem, data exchange with HMI devices and data visualization with help of predefined and user configured dialog screens are discovered. Implementation aspects of tools for monitoring and parameter visualization explained in application to different types of HMI devices like hand control panel, commissioning and programming software or remote terminal software.

After decades of development from the chimney architecture to the current modular architecture, the architecture of military systems is still facing many problems, such as high total cost, poor software reusability and portability, lacking of a common computing foundational facilities, and lacking of professional avionics field services. With the change of security situation, the US military pointed out that the future of the Air Force emphasizes tactical agility in the "Air Force Future Combat Concept". In order to maintain global superiority, Air Force must be able to be prior to the opponent to integrate the existing technology into combat effectiveness. The contents of tactical agility in avionics requirements are highly consistent with advanced avionics architecture requirements, which are rapid configuration, flexible re-assembly, and plug-and-play. This poses new challenges to the software architecture. To this end, this issue studies the evolution of system architecture, basing on the reports, proposes future avionics system architecture, which is open five-tier avionics system architecture. Service-oriented open avionics system is divided into five layers, from the bottom to the top are resource layer, operating system platform layer, infrastructure layer, service layer and application layer. Each layer can be flexibly replaced and reorganized to ensure the openness of the avionics system architecture. This paper describes the application layer APP implementation of situation awareness and data transmission between different levels.

There is a high demand for system reliability in the field of avionics. With the increase in system complexity, it is becoming increasingly difficult to analyze the reliability of integrated avionics systems. This paper summarizes the commonly used reliability analysis methods of avionics systems. Specifically, the dynamic Bayesian network method is used to conduct the reliability analysis of the general integrated modular avionics system architecture. According to the results of reliability and inference analysis, the system architecture design is improved to enhance reliability and reduce system cost. The results indicate that dynamic Bayesian networks can evaluate the reliability of complex avionics systems over time and guide the optimal design of the system.

This article argues that the future of public services will be shaped increasingly by the evolution of global, Internet-enabled, digital platforms, with two distinctive technical and commercial features. First, use of open standards and architectures that separate standard business logic from supporting applications will allow government to become technology- and vendor-agnostic, freeing it from its overdependence on proprietary systems and suppliers. Second, over time, open standards and increased market choice will drive both innovation and progressive convergence on cheaper, standard “utility” public services. These two features will combine to create a powerful dynamic situation, driving disintegration of traditional “black boxed” technologies and services, traditionally organized around “systems integrators” and departmental structures, and their reaggregation around the citizen in the form of services. The study aim was to develop a remote diagnostic monitoring system for pumping equipment with an open architecture to improve the reliability and efficiency of pump operation in various industrial sectors. The system is designed for the periodic collection and analysis of vibration and temperature signals, which allows for the prompt identification of potential equipment malfunctions and avoidance of emergency shutdowns during the production process. The aim of this study was to develop an effective open architecture for a diagnostic monitoring system for pumping equipment based on IoT technologies. The primary focus is on creating a system architecture that simplifies the installation and operation of equipment, ensures scalability and ease of integration with existing enterprise information systems, and reduces material implementation costs. To achieve this goal, the following objectives were addressed within the study: 1) selection of informative features from vibration signals that allow for the diagnosis of the most common faults in pumping equipment during periodic monitoring; 2) selection of hardware specifications that ensure the diagnostic monitoring system meets the stated requirements; and 3) development of a software and network architecture for the diagnostic monitoring system based on open hardware and software standards. The results of the experiments demonstrated that the developed system enables effective monitoring of the condition of pumping equipment and reduces the risk of emergency shutdowns, thereby optimizing operating costs. The incorporation of wireless technologies, open software products, and standards makes systems flexible and cost-effective, which is especially important for small and medium-sized industrial enterprises. Conclusion. The use of the proposed monitoring system improves the reliability of pumping equipment and maintenance management based on the current state data.

This paper describes OpenTracker, an open software architecture that provides a generic solution to the different tasks involved in tracking input devices and processing tracking data for virtual environments. It combines a highly modular design with a configuration syntax based on XML, thus taking full advantage of this new technology. OpenTracker is a first attempt towards a write once, track anywhere approach to virtual reality application development.

This paper introduces an open architecture humanoid robotics platform (OpenHRP for short) on which various building blocks of humanoid robotics can be investigated. OpenHRP is a virtual humanoid robot platform with a compatible humanoid robot, and consists of a simulator of humanoid robots and motion control library for them which can also be applied to a compatible humanoid robot as it is. OpenHRP also has a view simulator of humanoid robots on which humanoid robot vision can be studied. The consistency between the simulator and the robot are enhanced by introducing a new algorithm to simulate repulsive force and torque between contacting objects. This paper presents the open architecture humanoid robotics platform (OpenHRP) which consists of a simulator and motion control library of humanoid robots. A short historical perspective is given of the evolution of the use of software for the realization of increasingly complex control systems. The state-of-the-art in designing computer-based control systems is discussed and highlighted with an example. Two major aspects of the difficulties encountered with the current approach to designing these systems are discussed as an introduction to a solution. The solution is in the form of SPICE, a system that makes large real-time control software less complex by adopting a highly modular and expandible software architecture. This paper will describe the work done by KOP in the use of open standard systems to provide the control system backbone for the retrieval of large amounts of data from subsea control systems. The use of the OPC and TCP/IP standards allows the easy connection of almost any application to the subsea control system. Introduction The current generations of subsea control systems tend to be closed systems. These systems are constrained by the difficulties of connecting in other systems such as downhole systems or platform control systems. Vital areas of the system are implemented using proprietary protocols and methods that are poorly defined and entirely non-standard within the subsea community. This means that during the implementation of a system, integration of various manufacturers' equipment leads to a large number of well identified problems. It also leads to problems when additional functionality needs to be added to a system following its commissioning. It is becoming clear that, in future, there will need to be an increase in the amount of data that is retrieved from a subsea control system. The arrival of intelligent wells and the need for more information from reservoirs will have a large affect on the facilities that will need to be provided by any control and monitoring system. In the design and building of any new control and monitoring systems, open architecture standards are vital to enable inter-connectivity between the subsea equipment and other systems. Open systems can be considered to be fundamental standards and technologies used in the general computing market. These open standards define how different systems interconnect and how the data should be transferred between systems. The standards have been used for many years within the automation and control industries but less so within a subsea control and monitoring system environment. Theory and Definitions The use of interface standards will allow applications to connect to the subsea control system with ease and data to be passed around the wider system and to other applications in a much more efficient way. When the use of fibre optic technology or faster copper communications (increasing the speed of the line), exception based data retrieval (increasing the efficiency of the line) and the overall modularization of the system (increasing the flexibility of the system) are combined with the open standards, a control and monitoring system that can respond to future needs is produced. The ideas that have driven this work are to implement technology that has been used successfully in other areas and to apply this to the subsea field. The technologies that are used should advance the connectivity and flexibility of the system such that benefits can be seen in the time to configure a user system, the simplification of the interfaces to other systems and the extension of functionality beyond that of current systems. This work has principally investigated 2 open standard technologies.TCP/IP (The Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol) is the protocol suite that drives the Internet.

Open-die forging is a key process for manufacturing large components such as generator shafts and crankshafts for ship engines. Despite its industrial relevance, the process remains dependent on manual labour and operator expertise, leading to challenges in process stability, reproducibility, and efficiency. Traditional automation approaches are impractical due to the high variability and low production volumes typical of open-die forging. At the Institute of Metal Forming (IMF) at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, a novel concept for autonomous open-die forging has been developed and tested. The system combines conventional forging equipment with advanced technologies, including industrial robotics, 3D laser scanning, thermal imaging, and modular control software. Central to the concept is a robot cell operating as a distributed system, where sensor data is used to create a digital twin of the workpiece. This enables adaptive process planning and real-time autonomous operative adjustments. A process planning tool generates pass sequences and commands for manipulator movements, while an electromechanical interface allows indirect control of the forging press. The modular software architecture, coordinated by a central core-module, ensures flexibility and facilitates integration into different production environments. Initial trials demonstrate the system’s potential to improve process stability and quality while reducing dependency on manual operation. Ongoing work focuses on refining the concept to meet industrial requirements and support advanced material applications.
