Assessing driver acceptance of technology that reduces mobile phone use while driving: The case of mobile phone applications

This study aims to evaluate student satisfaction with e-learning in Jordan by combining the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). This research also delved into the study of the mediating role played by both synchronous and asynchronous learning and their impact on students’ satisfaction with e-learning. Data was collected through a questionnaire distributed to 590 students studying at four private Jordanian universities in northern Jordan. To analyse the study model, Smart PLS was used because it offers a robust methodology for such complex constructs. The results show that both synchronous and asynchronous learning significantly and positively affect students’ satisfaction with e-learning. The results also revealed that the relationship between synchronous learning and perceived usefulness was statistically significant. Regarding asynchronous learning, the relationship with perceived ease of use was positive and statistically significant. Turning to the TAM and UTAUT variables as independent variables, the results revealed a direct and statistically significant relationship between these variables and students’ satisfaction with e-learning. This study provides valuable insights into the factors that influence student satisfaction with e-learning in Jordan and presents a new approach by integrating synchronous and asynchronous learning as a mediator within the TAM and UTAUT frameworks. The findings highlight the nuances of technology acceptance and use in the context of e-learning, which can benefit educational institutions and policymakers in enhancing the e-learning experience for students in Jordan.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the intention to use blockchain technology (BT) in the context of supply chain (SC) operations through an integrated technology adoption framework using two well-known models, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Moreover, the study looked at the direct effect of TAM and UTAUT elements on attitude toward BT, as well as the role of attitude toward BT as a mediator between TAM and UTAUT elements and intention to use BT. Design/methodology/approach The study used a quantitative research method, and a structured questionnaire was used to gather primary data. The final sample, drawn using a convenience sampling that consisted of 273 managers from the Jordanian manufacturing sector. Structural equation modeling statistical method was conducted using the Smart PLS program to test hypotheses in the proposed study framework. Findings The study has provided intriguing results. It found that two UTAUT elements, namely performance expectancy and social influence and one TAM element, namely perceived usefulness, have a significant impact on the attitude toward BT. Besides that, the study found that attitude toward BT significantly mediated the relationship between UTAUT-TAM elements and intention to use BT. The findings revealed that three elements namely performance expectancy, social influence and perceived usefulness have statistical significance on intention to use BT through the mediation of attitude. Finally, there is a direct significant positive relationship between the attitude toward BT and intention to use it. Research limitations/implications The study helps decision-makers, South Carolina practitioners and academics recognize the fundamental factors that increase manufacturing firms’ intentions to use blockchain in their SCs. This gives decision-makers a better understanding of why users accept or reject BT, as well as how to improve user acceptability through technological design. Future studies should seek for a bigger sample size and use random sampling techniques. Furthermore, the study should be replicated in other industries or developing countries to validate the findings. Originality/value There is a scarcity of studies identifying the factors that increase blockchain adoption intention in SCM and developing countries. This study differs in that it examines BT intention to use in the context of SC using an integrated technology adoption framework that uses two well-known models, UTAUT and TAM, whereas other studies typically use only one model/theory. Moreover, given the importance of attitude in behavior, this study also investigated the effect of TAM-UTAUT elements on attitude toward BT, as well as the role of attitude toward BT as a mediator between TAM and UTAUT elements and intention to use BT.

Assessing the utility of TAM, TPB, and UTAUT for advanced driver assistance systems

Purpose Few studies have investigated how anxiety operates within the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Framework. Consequently, this investigation explores the influence of anxiety on the customer adoption of online shopping based on the UTAUT. Design/methodology/approach The UTAUT's framework was extended by proposing new casual pathways between anxiety and its existing constructs (e.g. effort expectancy, performance expectancy and behavioural intentions) within the contingencies of age, gender and experience. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique was employed to evaluate the statistical significance of the proposed pathways by analysing 483 sets of self-administrated survey responses. Findings The results indicate that anxiety simultaneously exerts negative direct influences on performance expectancy, effort expectancy and behavioural intention constructs. While the moderating effects of age, gender and experience on the anxiety-intention link were found to be significant, there was no evidence suggesting that they moderate anxiety-performance expectancy and anxiety-effort expectancy relationships. Research limitations/implications The limitations of the current study are inherent in its design and methodology, providing some directions for future research. Originality/value This study contributes to the theory by including anxiety in the UTAUT and applying it to the online shopping context. The evidence about the significance of anxiety, with contingencies regarding age, gender and experience, supplies practical implications for online marketing strategies.

Aim/Purpose: This study aims to examine the ten factors from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) theories in order to analyze behavioral intentions to use the Indonesian online capital market investment platforms and the effect of behavioral intentions on actual usage. Background: The potential growth of capital market investors in Indonesia is large, and the low use of the Internet for investment purposes makes it necessary for stakeholders to understand the factors that affect people’s intentions to invest, especially through online platforms. Several previous studies have explained the intention to use online investment platforms using the TAM and TPB theories. This study tries to combine TAM, TPB, and UTAUT theories in analyzing behavioral intentions to use an online capital market investment platform in Indonesia. Methodology: The research approach employed is a mixed method, particularly explanatory research, which employs quantitative methods first, followed by qualitative methods. Data were collected by conducting interviews and sending online surveys. This study was successful in collecting information on the users of online capital market investment platforms in Indonesia from 1074 respondents, which was then processed and analyzed using Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) with the IBM AMOS 26.0 application. Contribution: This study complements earlier theories like TAM, TPB, and UTAUT by looking at the intention to use online capital market investment platforms from technological, human, and environmental viewpoints. This study looks at the intention to use the online capital market investing platform as a whole rather than separately depending on investment instruments. This study also assists practitioners including regulators, the government, developers, and investors by offering knowledge of the phenomena and factors that can increase the capital market’s investment intention in Indonesia. Findings: Attitudes, perceived ease of use, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and national pride were found to be significant predictors of the intention to use online investment platforms in Indonesia, whereas perceived usefulness, perceived risk, perceived trust, perceived privacy, and price value were not. Recommendations for Practitioners: All practitioners must be able to take steps and strategies that focus on factors that have a significant impact on increasing usage intentions. The government can enact legislation that emphasizes the simplicity and convenience of investment, as well as launch campaigns that encourage people to participate in economic recovery by investing in the capital market. Meanwhile, the developers are concentrating on facilitating the flow of investment transactions through the platform, increasing education and awareness of the benefits of investing in the capital market, and providing content that raises awareness that investing in the capital market can help to restore the national economy. Recommendation for Researchers: Further research is intended to include other variables such as perceived benefits and perceived security, as well as other frameworks such as TRA, to better explain individuals’ behavioral intentions to use online capital investment platforms. Impact on Society: This study can help all stakeholders understand what factors can increase Indonesians’ interest in investing in the capital market, particularly through online investment platforms. This understanding is expected to increase the number of capital market participants and, as a result, have an impact on economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Future Research: Future research is expected to investigate additional factors that can influence individuals’ behavioral intention to use an online capital market investment platform, such as perceived benefits and perceived security, as well as the addition of control variables such as age, gender, education, and income. International research across nations is also required to build a larger sample size in order to examine the behavior of investors in developing and developed countries and acquire a more thorough understanding of the online capital market investment platform.

This study examines the acceptance of ICT-based sports devices by the older adults, focusing on psychological improvements through exercise participation. A systematic literature review was conducted on papers related to the types of ICT devices and their acceptance by the older adults, selecting 13 quantitative studies after a rigorous selection process. These studies applied various theoretical models such as the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), Senior Technology Acceptance Model(STAM), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology(UTAUT), and theTranstheoretical Model(TTM) to evaluate device acceptance behavior. Results showed that using ICT-based sports devices significantly enhanced the physical and emotional health of the older adults, particularly increasing self-efficacy. Device ease of use was critical for the older adults’ acceptance of technology, impacting their confidence in using new technologies effectively. The findings suggest that embracing ICT-based sports devices can significantly enhance the quality of life for the older adults, highlighting the importance of effective technology solutions and a multidisciplinary approach to policy development.

Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) has been in vogue for quite sometime now. The theory lends credence to the fact that technology and its usage in different spheres of life ought to go through various stages like designing, planning, implementing and leveraging in various ways before making that much needed change in human lives. The stakeholders involved in various stages of technology need to know the challenges they might come across in order to overcome them while successfully implementing technology. This is where UTAUT play a pivotal role by providing necessary information to all key stakeholders. The chapter throws light on the importance of UTAUT in different sectors with some illustrations. The research findings highlighted in the chapter provides additional explanation, apart from exploring new areas of research pertaining to UTAUT.

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) systems is on the rise owing to their many benefits. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify (1) how the literature on AI adoption has evolved over the past few years, (2) key themes associated with AI adoption in the literature, and (3) the gaps in the literature. To achieve these objectives, we utilised the Biblioshiny of R-package bibliometric analysis tool to analyse the AI adoption literature. A total of 91 articles were reviewed and analysed in this study. Four major themes were identified: AI, machine learning, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Using a content analysis of the identified themes, the study gained additional insight into the studies on AI adoption. Previous studies have been limited to specific industries and systems, and adoption theories like the UTAUT and TAM have also been utilised to a limited extent. Directions for future studies were provided.

Agricultural extension plays a vital role in supporting agricultural development; however, the use of digital extension media remains limited and has not yet become embedded in extension practices. This study aims to evaluate the dynamics of perceptions among farmers and Field Agricultural Extension Workers (FAEW) toward smartphone-based digital extension media using the ADDIE model. An evaluative research approach was applied by integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and the Innovation Diffusion Theory to analyze technology adoption. The study involved 100 respondents, consisting of 36 farmers and 64 FAEWs, from five Agricultural Extension Centers (BPP) under the Kostratani program in East Java. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with a Likert scale of 1–5. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that five key factors explained 85.2% of the variance in digital media adoption (R² = 0.852; p < 0.01). Among these factors, Perceived Usefulness (β = 0.42) and Performance Expectancy (β = 0.38) were identified as the strongest determinants influencing adoption. Comparative analysis indicated perception gaps between farmers and extension workers, particularly in digital literacy. The Android-based multimedia applications developed through the ADDIE stages were shown effective in improving communication, information delivery, and collaboration in extension activities. This study offers a novel integration of the ADDIE model with dual perception analysis based on TAM and UTAUT in the Indonesian agricultural extension context. Recommendations include strengthening digital literacy training and improving infrastructure to support sustainable adoption of digital extension media.

An important goal for health care organizations is supporting older adults who age in place. Telehomecare (THC) technology can help to meet the growing demand for care. Despite the apparent positive effects of this technology, there are still barriers to THC adoption. This study investigates how the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) can be used to identify predictors for THC use by Dutch care professionals. Data were collected from 207 health professionals working in homecare in the Netherlands. Data were fit to the UTAUT model. The UTAUT was extended with three possible determinants for professionals' intention to use THC: concerns about privacy, costs expectancy and technology experience. We conclude that UTAUT can be used to explore predictors for care professionals. More research has to be done that can be used to develop transnational eHealth nursing education programs to make them more adequately prepared for a rapidly changing health care sector.

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of demographics as moderators of the factors influencing library workers’ and library patrons’ behavioral intention toward the use of social media in university libraries in Ghana. The theoretical model for this study was based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). The study employed a cross-sectional survey and quantitative data was collected from a total of six-hundred and five usable responses obtained from the sampled respondents using a pre-tested questionnaire. Statistical analyses were carried out using the t-test analysis (using Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances) and the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. Key findings were that although partial relationships were established, the mediating roles of the demographics of library workers and patrons on factors influencing the intention to use and actual use of social media in the university libraries were significant. Establishing the effect of the user demographics on factors influencing social media use in the context of the UTAUT is novel within the Ghanaian university library setting and thus contributes new knowledge to methodological discussions to improve practices and policies on social media adoption and use. However, since this study was largely quantitative, future research could include both quantitative and qualitative research approaches to explore any other important constructs that fit into the context and can explain adoption in further detail. Recommendations based on findings are provided in the article.

Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have a very significant role in the economy, can even be said to be the backbone of the economy. However, MSMEs are precisely the sector hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Digitalization creates new opportunities for MSMEs in the pandemic. FinTech, one of the implementations of digitalization should be pursued to be used by MSMEs. Using path analysis processed using Partial Least Square (PLS), this research aims to identify how Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) works on Adopting FinTech by MSMEs. The Outer Model and Inner Model reflect that the model work. The outer loading value of ? 0.7, AVE value ? of 0.5, Cronbach's Alpha ? 0,70, a correlation value ? of 0.50; and Composite Reliability ? 0.6, and R-Square 0.716 reflect it. However, regarding the factors that influence intention to use, it is different from previous research that became a reference. There are only four hypotheses proven. Those are Context had a significant positive effect on Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness, and Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness had a significant positive effect on the intention to use fintech. BackgroundOut-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) are a leading cause of death worldwide, yet first responder apps can significantly improve outcomes by mobilizing citizens to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation before professional help arrives. Despite their importance, limited research has examined the psychological and behavioral factors that influence individuals’ willingness to adopt these apps.ObjectiveGiven that first responder app use involves elements of both technology adoption and preventive health behavior, it is essential to examine this behavior from multiple theoretical perspectives. Building on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and health belief model (HBM), this study therefore developed an integrative framework to explain which behavioral determinants and demographic and health-related factors drive an individual’s willingness to install a first responder app for OHCA.MethodsWe conducted a web-based cross-sectional survey (N=3660; mean age 49.95, SD 16.75 years; n=1909, 52.2% women) in June 2024 among Belgian adults. Behavioral determinants (UTAUT and HBM constructs), demographic (eg, age), and health-related (eg, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training experience) variables were measured using (multi-item) scales. Willingness to install the app served as the outcome variable. We developed a structural equation model using the Lavaan package in R and specified regression paths, on the one hand, between the behavioral determinants and willingness to install the app, and on the other hand, between the demographic and health-related factors and the behavioral determinants. Additionally, we conducted multiple group analyses to examine the moderating role of demographic and health-related factors on the relationships between the behavioral determinants and the willingness to install the app.ResultsOur results revealed that 2 UTAUT variables (ie, facilitating conditions: β=.07; P=.003 and social influence: β=.16; P<.001) and 3 HBM variables (ie, perceived susceptibility: β=.06; P=.003, perceived barriers: β=–.29; P<.001, and perceived benefits: β=.38; P<.001) were associated with willingness to install a first responder app for OHCA. Additionally, most demographic and health-related factors were indirectly related to willingness via behavioral determinants, with age being the sole moderator. Specifically, a negative association between perceived severity and willingness was only observed among older adults. In addition, the positive relationship between perceived benefits and willingness was stronger for older adults compared to younger ones.ConclusionsOverall, the results of this study have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, this study finds its relevance in extending the UTAUT and HBM to altruistic mobile health apps and advancing our understanding of technology adoption in health contexts. Practically, the study’s findings could inform real-life health campaigns aimed at enhancing citizen participation in first responder systems.
