Analysis of SD systems under stochastic disturbances

Silicon nanocrystal memory devices [1],[2] such as shown in Fig. 4.1, offer the potential to solve the challenging problem of scaling nonvolatile memories. Scaling of floating-gate (FG) nonvolatile memory cells has been limited to bottom oxide thicknesses in the range of 80–110 A primarily because of the vulnerability to charge loss from the conducting FG through isolated defects in the tunnel oxide that arise after repeated write/erase operations. As a result the FG, operating voltages are in the range of 16–20 V required for erasing the memory cell by Fowler-Nordheim tunneling of carriers from the FG to the channel. This voltage is sometimes split as ±8 to ±10 V using fully isolated wells. Silicon nanocrystal memory cells that store charge in isolated centers inside a gate dielectric are less susceptible to charge loss through isolated defect paths in the tunnel oxide due to their discontinuous nature of charge storage. In other words, an underlying oxide defect leads to charge loss only from charge storage sites in its immediate proximity. Once the impact of defect-mediated charge loss is mitigated, charge loss is primarily due to tunneling and the tunnel oxide in these devices can be scaled down to about 50–60 A based on retention-time requirements. The scaling of the tunnel oxide results in embedded memory modules that can operate with a maximum on-chip voltage of ±6 V, allowing reduction of the memory module size by up to a factor of 2 at the 90-nm technology node, as shown in Fig. 4.2 [3]. Furthermore, this reduction in operating voltage enables sharing of logic I/O device implants with the high-voltage periphery devices, which are used to charge and discharge the memory bitcells in the array. In this chapter we discuss the challenges faced by restoration practitioners (RPs) aiming to rehabilitate lands disturbed by open-cut coal mining operations. Large deposits of coal occur around the globe, notably in Australia, China, North America, and Russia. Coal deposits formed during Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic geologic periods. Coals vary from soft brown (lignite), to soft black (bituminous), to hard black (anthracite). In many areas coal deposits lie exposed, or near the earth’s surface, where they can be efficiently and economically extracted by open-cut (often referred to as open-cast) mining operations (figure 8.1). To reach coal deposits near the earth’s surface, open-cut mining operations remove over-burden (regolith) materials to create large and extensive piles of waste material called spoil (figure 8.2). In chapter 15 we describe eight indicators that inform restoration practitioners (RPs) about hether a drainage line is still active or is becoming stabilized. Here, we are referring to drainage lines that flow occasionally, that is, ephemeral drainages, such as gullies running down a hillslope rather than permanently flowing creeks, streams, or rivers. Ephemeral drainage lines on hillslopes in undisturbed landscapes are smoothly concave in cross-section (no sharp edges), receive diffuse overland flow, and gently drain water from the surrounding slopes. (See figure 15.1.) These undisturbed landscapes do not have high rates of runoff or erosion. Landscapes that have a history of disturbance, however, often have hillslopes here drainage lines have become incised. (See figure 15.2.) If erosion cuts a channel deeper than 0.3m, the drainage line is defined as a gully; if the cut is less than 0.3m, it is called a rill. Open image in new window Figure 15.1. Exporting a completed Fireworks document for web use makes for some interesting situations. For instance, how can you export graphical images that need hover, active, or click states while still maintaining an optimized user experience? You could use Fireworks’ built-in button exporting features to export each of the image states to separate files, but a more efficient way would be to export all of the image states to a single file or sprite sheet, as it’s often called (see Figure 13-1). Rutile (TiO 2) belongs to P42/mnm space group. The crystal structure of rutile is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The cation sublattice constituted of titanium ions is body-centered tetragonal. Each titanium ion is surrounded by a slightly distorted octahedron of six oxygen ions. The octahedra are linked to each other forming chains parallel to the c-axis. Between the chains are regions of low electron density, “open channels” (easy diffusion channels). At regular intervals of c/2 along the channel are potential minima which are possible interstitial sites for cations. The open channels cause anisotropy in the diffusion process and may allow fast diffusion of smaller ions parallel to the tetragonal axis [1, 2]. Open image in new window Figure 1. The earliest approaches concerned recognition within small populations, with the volume of data limited largely by the computational resources available then. As illustrated by Fig. 4.1, many sought to derive a human silhouette from an image and, as common in pattern recognition, and then to derive a description which can be associated with the identity of the subject. This gives a ‘statistical’ approach to automatic gait recognition wherein the image sequence is described as a whole, and neither by a model- nor by a motion-based approach, but one which describes the motion content. Given that techniques to separate a moving object from its background have been developed for many years (especially in surveillance) there existed a selection of approaches to derive the silhouette of the moving subject, an example silhouette extraction from the image of Fig. 4.1(a) is shown in Fig. 4.1(b). What was then needed was approaches to process the sequence of silhouettes so as to derive a gait signature — a set of numbers to represent a subject’s identity. A selection of signatures is shown in Fig. 4.1(c) which are displayed in a 3-dimensional space for visualization purposes only (the signature usually has more dimensions than this). These signatures represent ten of walking subjects with four instances of each subject. In this case the signatures derived from the four instances mostly cluster well, representing a good recognition rate. Accordingly, the target of the early approaches was to process video data of the form of Fig. 4.1(a) to obtain silhouettes of the form of Fig. 4.1(b) so as to derive signatures for recognition performance analysis. This common procedure is indicated in a variety of settings in urology. Its general indication is to relieve obstruction of the ureter. This can be caused by a variety of conditions. Obstruction by a calculus, ureteral stricture, extrinsic compression, and ureteropelvic junction obstruction are just a sample of the conditions this procedure can be employed in. In addition, double-J stents (Figure 29.1) can be placed before other pelvic surgeries to aid in identifying the ureter, though simple ureteral catheters can be used for this as well. Finally, double-J stents can be placed after other reconstructive urologic procedures such as ureteral reimplant, pyeloplasty, or partial nephrectomy. Here we will describe the basic technique employed in placing the double-J stent (double pigtail ended stent on both ends). Open image in new window Figure 29.1. A half-inch 32-gauge needle (Air-Tite Products) minimizes injection discomfort. In the periorbital areas we inject in an oblique manner to the skin to lessen the chance of deep injections or even injury should a patient suddenly move. Pinching upward or gently rubbing the adjacent skin during injection minimizes patient discomfort by distracting the patient during the injection and “confusing” the sensory sensation of the injection (Figure 95.1). We recommend premarking the areas to be injected, and utilizing bright lighting and wearing magnification to avoid injury to eyelid vessels. We seldom use topical anesthetics, and some suggest a reduced duration of effect in patients treated with topical anesthetic prior to injection.1 We inject into the subcutaneous tissue planes to avoid the underlying muscle and neurovascular structures. This reduces patient discomfort and lessens the risks of bruising and deep dissemination. In general the injections can be given obliquely or perpendicular to the skin, but in the orbicularis areas it is critical to inject at as flat an angle as possible because of the thinness of the eyelid skin and to point away from the eye. It is also helpful when injecting the lower orbicularis areas to put the skin on stretch, which helps with placing the Botox in the subcutaneous plane. Botox must be avoided in the central upper eyelid to prevent ptosis and over the inferior oblique in the lower eyelid to avoid diplopia. Fluid-technical units are used to correct deformations of bending structures, because of the necessary high forces. A microchip structure packed with protein A-coated microspheres (see Figure 1) was used for selective sample clean up and preconcentration. Because it finds and measures noncooperative targets, radar motivates various countering actions. Motorists might want to deprive the highway patrolman of information about their speed. Certainly, nations want to deny other nations all kinds of information, particularly in times of tension or war. An obvious way of denying radar information is to disrupt the very small amounts of received signal with spurious energy—either actively, by radiating energy in the radar’s frequency band (called “jamming” or “active ECM”), or passively, by dispensing various extraneous objects (called “passive ECM”). Both classes of ECM are aimed at obscuring the target or confusing or misdirecting the radar or its operator. In the United States military a culture has arisen which is based upon the development of ECM and responses to it (called “electronic counter-countermeasures,” ECCM). All types of electronic transmissions, not just radar, are involved. A national professional society, called the Association of Old Crows, thrives. Iron-sulfur proteins are present in virtually all living organisms. Their function is to transfer electrons to various partners. They have iron and sulfur in their chromophore and rather low molecular weights (5 to 25 kDa). They usually have the same ratio of iron to sulfur except for rubredoxin which has only one iron ligated by four cysteine residues. Several cluster classes have been identified in iron-sulfur proteins, including [1Fe], [2Fe-2S], [4Fe-4S], and [3Fe-4S] types (Figure 1). Some iron-sulfur proteins contain more than one cluster of a given type or of different types. [2Fe-2S] ferredoxins contain two high-spin ferric ions that are antiferromagnetically coupled resulting a total spin number of zero in the oxidized state; thus they are EPR1 silent. Population of higher electronic states, however, makes the cluster paramagnetic at room temperature (and at all temperature studied by NMR). Upon reduction, one of the two ferric ions (Fe3+) is changed to a ferrous ion (Fe2+), and the other remains ferric. Reduced [2Fe-2S] ferredoxins have a total spin number of one-half and produce an EPR signal. [4Fe-4S] cluster types have three possible oxidation states: 3Fe3+-Fe2+, 2Fe3+-2Fe2+, and Fe3+-3Fe2+. Typically in iron-sulfur proteins, only two of the three states are easily accessible: the first two as in high-potential iron-sulfur proteins (HiPIPs) or the last two as in [4Fe-4S] ferredoxins. We have recently investigated three different [2Fe-2S] ferredoxins by NMR spectroscopy: Anabaena 7120 vegetative ferredoxin, Anabacna 7120 heterocyst ferredoxin, and human placental ferredoxin. The first two are plant-type ferredoxins from a cyanobacterium, and the last is vertebrate-type ferredoxin. Open image in new window Figure 1. In the paper the computer simulation model of the trabecular bone surface adaptation is presented. The base of algorithm formulation was the bone remodeling phenomenon leading to optimization of the trabecular network in the bone [1] ruled by the the strain energy density. In contrast to approaches used so far, the system proposed in this study mimics the real 3-dimensional bone geometry evolution, where not only the volumetric Finite Element Method mesh, but also the surface of trabecular network is controlled during the simulation. The computer system assumptions were presented on the ICTAM Congress last year [2]. In contrary to other voxel models, the remodeling phenomenon is simulated exactly on the analyzed structure without recalling the voxels. Adaptation to the mechanical stimula-tion results in adaptation of the surface position in the virtual space. Conducting electrons in inorganic and organic matter interact with vibrating ions. If phonon frequencies are sufficiently low, the local deformation of ions, caused by the electron itself, creates a potential well, which traps the electron even in a perfect crystal lattice. This self-trapping phenomenon was predicted by Landau [1]. It was studied in greater detail by Pekar [2], Frohlich [3], Feynman [4], Rashba [5], Devreese [6], and other authors in the effective mass approximation for the electron placed in a continuous polarizible medium, which leads to a so-called large or continuous polaron. Large-polaron wave functions and corresponding lattice distortions spread over many lattice constants (see Fig. 8.1). The trapping is never complete in the perfect lattice. Due to finite phonon frequencies, ion polarizations follow polaron motion if the motion is sufficiently slow. Hence, large polarons with a low kinetic energy propagate through the lattice as free electrons but with an enhanced effective mass. Open image in new window FIGURE 8.1.
