Although the digital economy has become a new driving force for development worldwide, it is still unclear how digital economy development affects green total factor energy efficiency (GTFEE). Using panel data from 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2018, this study empirically analyzes the effect of digital economy development on GTFEE by adopting a dynamic panel model, a mediation effect model, a dynamic threshold panel model, and a spatial Durbin model. The empirical results show that digital economy development has a significantly negative direct effect on GTFEE. The digital economy can impact GTFEE by the mechanisms of electrification, hollowing out of industrial scale, and hollowing out of industrial efficiency. Neither innovation nor environmental regulations significantly change this negative impact. The dynamic threshold panel model shows a nonlinear relationship between digital economy development and GTFEE, which indicates that the effect of digital economy development on GTFEE significantly inverts from negative to positive as the digital economy develops. In addition, GTFEE has a significantly positive spatial correlation, and the digital economy has a positive spatial spillover effect on GTFEE.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a key factor in accelerating the growth and development of the digital economy across various countries.By facilitating technology transfer, improving digital infrastructure, and enhancing local workforce skills, FDI contributes to the formation of advanced digital ecosystems. In today's competitive environment, where countries are striving to attract FDI, they are implementing policies and incentives to draw foreign investors into critical sectors of the digital economy, such as information and communication technology. This study aims to evaluate the spatial impact of FDI, financial deepening, trade openness, government size, and economic growth on digital economy development in MENA countries from 2000 to 2023.To conduct statistical tests, we employ the dynamic spatial panel model using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) with the two-step Arellano-Bover/Blundell-Bond estimator. The results indicate that the first lag of the dependent variable has a positive effect (0.83) on digital economy development, meaning that the digital economy's growth in the current period is dependent on its development in the previous year. The first spatial lag is also positive and significant (0.005), demonstrating a positive spatial dependence among MENA countries. This suggests that an increase in digital economy development in one country positively affects neighboring countries, leading to spillover effects.Furthermore, according to technology transfer theory, FDI can introduce advanced technologies to the host country, which contributes to digital economy development in the region with a coefficient of 0.07.Additionally, financial deepening, economic growth, government size, and trade openness all have a positive and direct impact on digital economy development, with economic growth having the smallest estimated coefficient and trade openness having the largest.

The development of the digital economy radiates to national ecological protection and resource utilization, holding the key to haze governance. However, as the largest developing country, the impact of China's digital economy on haze pollution has received little attention. Based on the panel data of 275 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2018, this paper studies the impact and mechanism of digital economy development on haze pollution. The results of fixed effect model show that the development of digital economy has a significant negative impact on urban haze pollution in China. The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the development of digital economy has a more significant inhibitory effect on the haze pollution of resource-based cities, non-resource-based cities, eastern cities, and large cities. The quasi-natural experimental results show that the establishment of the "national big data comprehensive experimental area" is conducive to haze pollution control, which proves the conclusion that the digital economy can significantly reduce haze pollution. The development of digital economy can significantly reduce haze pollution by promoting technological innovation and optimizing resource allocation.

Digitalisation is a modern social and economic reality. The search for efficient pathways to move towards high-quality digital communities’ sustainable development constitutes the scope of current urban research worldwide. Given the need to move towards sustainable urban digitalisation, investigation of its critical influencing factors deserves special attention. However, quantitative empirical studies that avoid subjective judgement on the drivers of sustainable urban digitalisation are lacking. The purpose of this study is to fill this knowledge gap by outlining and quantifying the key factors affecting the sustainable development of the urban digital economy through entropy-TOPSIS modelling. The study takes China’s provinces and cities as an example due to China’s success in digital economy development. It is proposed to use the complex four-dimensional (scientific and technological innovation, economic growth, social development, information infrastructure) system involving 16 sub-indices to measure urban digital economy sustainability. Applying data from 31 Chinese provinces and cities for 2016-2019 and the entropy-TOPSIS model, the development of the technological innovations was found to be the most impacting factor on the urban digital economy sustainability path. The R&D staff engagement and expenditures, goods export and import, and e-commerce sales fuel the urban digital economy sustainability the most, while the number of students, public financial expenditures, and unemployment are the least significant. Results show that the urban digital economy is more a business-driven process than pushed by authorities. The gap between Chinese regions’ digital economy development was identified. This could be explained by the prevalence of conventional industries in several areas and the low level of their digitalisation and indicates the need to enhance interregional cooperation and partnership to promote sustainable development of the country under the digital economy paradigm. Despite China’s context, this research contributes to further science and policy development in this field globally, covering the role of talents, innovations, business R&D investments, interregional cooperation, and multiscale partnership in the promotion of urban digitalisation conducive to sustainability ideas

This paper examines the correlation between digital economy development and green technology innovation, aiming to clarify the influence of digital economy development on green technology innovation. Based on the data of China's digital economy development and enterprise green technology innovation from 2012 to 2022, a fixed effect model is established to assess the influence of digital economy development level on enterprise green technology innovation. The findings indicate that the level of the digital economy exerts a significant positive impact on enterprise green technology innovation, with macro-level digital economy development enhancing micro-level enterprise green technology innovation. Additionally, R&D investment serves as a positive mediating factor in the relationship between the digital economy and enterprise green innovation. Compared with the western region, the digital economy in the eastern region exerts the most significant influence on green technology innovation. Consequently, the subsequent recommendations are proposed to enhance the development of digital economic infrastructure and refine the allocation of R&D expenditure.

This study investigates the impact of rural digital economy development on agricultural carbon emission efficiency, aiming to elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms and pathways through which digital technology enables low-carbon transformation in agriculture, thereby contributing to the achievement of agricultural carbon neutrality goals. Based on provincial-level panel data from China spanning 2011 to 2022, this study examines the relationship between the rural digital economy and agricultural carbon emission efficiency, along with its underlying mechanisms, using bidirectional fixed effects models, mediation effect analysis, and Spatial Durbin Models. The results indicate the following: (1) A significant N-shaped-curve relationship exists between rural digital economy development and agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Specifically, agricultural carbon emission efficiency exhibits a three-phase trajectory of “increase, decrease, and renewed increase” as the rural digital economy advances, ultimately driving a sustained improvement in efficiency. (2) Industrial integration acts as a critical mediating mechanism. Rural digital economy development accelerates the formation of the N-shaped curve by promoting the integration between agriculture and other sectors. (3) Spatial spillover effects significantly influence agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Due to geographical proximity, regional diffusion, learning, and demonstration effects, local agricultural carbon emission efficiency fluctuates with changes in neighboring regions’ digital economy development levels. (4) The relationship between rural digital economy development and agricultural carbon emission efficiency exhibits a significant inverted N-shaped pattern in regions with higher marketization levels, planting-dominated areas of southeast China, and digital economy demonstration zones. Further analysis reveals that within rural digital economy development, production digitalization and circulation digitalization demonstrate a more pronounced inverted N-shaped relationship with agricultural carbon emission efficiency. This study proposes strategic recommendations to maximize the positive impact of the rural digital economy on agricultural carbon emission efficiency, unlock its spatially differentiated contribution potential, identify and leverage inflection points of the N-shaped relationship between digital economy development and emission efficiency, and implement tailored policy portfolios—ultimately facilitating agriculture’s green and low-carbon transition.
