Promising Practices in US Sponsoring Institutions to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Graduate Medical Education.
Background Best practices to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the biomedical workforce remain poorly understood. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education launched the Barbara Ross-Lee, DO, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion award for sponsoring institutions to celebrate efforts to improve DEI in graduate medical education (GME). Objective To identify themes in practices used by award applicants to improve DEI efforts at their institutions, using a qualitative design. Methods This qualitative study employed an exploratory, inductive approach and constant comparative method to analyze award applications from 2 submission cycles (2020, 2021). Data analysis involved the use of a preliminary codebook of 29 program applications used in a previous study, which was modified and expanded, to perform a subsequent analysis of 12 sponsoring institution applications. Seven adjudication sessions were conducted to ensure coding consistency and resolve disagreements, resulting in the identification of final themes. Results Institutions' approaches to advancing DEI resulted from work within 5 themes and 10 subthemes. The themes encompassed organizational commitment (policies that reflect DEI mission), data infrastructure (tracking recruitment, retention, and inclusion efforts), community connection (service-learning opportunities), diverse team engagement (coproduction with residents), and systematic strategies for DEI support throughout the educational continuum. Consistent across themes was the importance of collaboration, avoiding silos, and the need for a comprehensive longitudinal approach to DEI to achieve a diverse GME workforce. Conclusions This qualitative study identified 5 themes that can inform and guide sponsoring institutions in promoting DEI.

Profile/Analysis of the Section 603 Program/Applicants
The Education Amendments of 1976 authorized the Citizen Education for Cultural Understanding Program under Section 603 of Title VI of the National Defense Education Act, as amended. Not until the fall of 1978, however, did there appear to be any significant support for the funding of the program; but by the time an appropriation was visible in early spring 1979, the interest level across the country appeared exceptionally high. Then in response to publicity of the program and the wide dissemination of over 10,000 application booklets in April and May 1979, the Office of Education (Division of International Education of the Bureau of Higher and Continuing Education) received 473 applications for grant awards in June 1979, from every state but Alaska, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Wyoming. In September 1979 public announcement was made of 39 grant awards in this the first year of the program commencing October 1, 1979 and funded for one year. For the second cycle, 466 applications were submitted in February 1980. There are likely to be 36 grant awards for 1980, totaling $2 million, bringing the total number of projects for the first two years to 75 and the total federal outlay to $4 million.

This paper reports on a survey of UK members of the Institute of Physics selected on the basis of an expected research association to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) during the years 1995 and 1996. The survey assesses the EPSRC's ‘college’ system for research evaluation from the perspective of members of the EPSRC's colleges and from those researchers who have only seen the system from the outside. Insights into the workings of a college-based peer-review system are gained, particularly in regard to referee expertise and the most effective provision of information to prioritisation committees who must award or decline applications formally based on referee opinion of an applicant's submission.
