Violence committed by teenagers is a complex and varied phenomenon; one form of violence often committed by teenagers is bullying. If bullying continues to occur, it will result in a decrease in trust and all aspects of the personal social life of the victim. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of bibliotherapy using electronic publications in increasing the self-confidence of adolescent victims of bullying. This type of research is quantitative research with an experimental research type. The population in this study comprised vocational school students who were victims of bullying at school, totaling 67 students. The technique used to determine the sample is cluster random sampling. The number of samples in this study was 14 students. The methods used to collect data are observation and questionnaires. The instrument used to collect data was a questionnaire sheet. The data analysis technique in this research uses quantitative statistical analysis. Hypothesis testing uses Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test data analysis. The research results are as follows: First, bibliotherapy using electronic publications effectively increases the self-confidence of teenagers who are victims of bullying in the experimental group. Second, bibliotherapy without electronic publications is effective in increasing the self-confidence of teenagers who are victims of bullying in the control group. Third, bibliotherapy using electronic publications is more effective in increasing the self-confidence of teenagers who are victims of bullying than bibliotherapy without using electronic publications. The implication of this research is that the application of Bibliotherapy by utilizing Electronic Publications can increase the self-confidence of adolescent victims of bullying.

From the Era of Print to the Reality of Electronic Publishing

This paper focuses on academic, scientific publishing, as a form of documentation and communication of scientific findings in the changing world of converging information and communication technologies. It assesses the current state of technologies and forms of publishing electronically, and future trends and possibilities. This is linked to a discussion of the nature of the publishing industry, its form in relation to economic issues in demand and supply within publishing and specifically electronic publishing in this area. The paper suggests that the recent policy document from the European Commission, Strategic Developments for the European Publishing Industry towards the Year 2000 may present a number of difficulties for the scientific publishing industry. This strategy outlines a number of possibilities for increasing the extent of electronic publishing. These possibilities conflict with the particular situation of scientific publishers, which are generally small businesses with limited resources and expertise, and without the financial stability to be able to set up or initiate electronic publishing. The analysis of the policy suggests that the publishing industry and its representatives may need to work more closely with small publishers, so that the infrastructure may be developed to overcome these problems for these exciting new technologies, and methods of utilising them for electronic publishing, exchange of information and communication, to be fully utilised.

We describe changes that are occurring in electronic publishing as a result of the emergence of networked computing. Networks facilitate the exchange of information, but the changes will be far more profound than a simple substitution of media. As new capabilities and new challenges arise, there are corresponding new services that must be developed or else electronic publishing will not meet the needs of the public. After discussing these services, we describe architectures that call be used to implement them. These architectures respond to the issues of performance, scalability, security, and economics that must be addressed before electronic publishing will blossom. We illustrate how current architectures support existing services, enhancements offered by multi-tier servers, and extensions of these architectures to more symmetric models such as the broker model. Many of these concepts are being pursued by the IBM Digital Library family of products.

Using the results from a publishers&apos survey conducted in June 1999 of the Association of American University Presses, Jennifer Siler creates a baseline record of university presses' current involvement in electronic publishing. Scholarly publishers launch electronic publishing projects for a variety of purposes, such as marketing and discussion tools for clothbound books, teaching and research tools for specialized markets, the timeliness of the electronic form (including the ability to update the material with relative ease), and the capability of on-demand printing. Other scholarly publishers prefer not to participate in forms of electronic publishing because of the need for specially trained staff, the additional cost of the technology and labour, a perceived limited market, and, in some cases, a lack of appropriate product for the electronic form. Siler argues that, given the rapid changes in technology and the developing trend towards electronic dissemination of research, publishers will have to be prepared to provide their markets with the markets' format of choice. Siler concludes that the book will nevertheless survive the new technology as it has in the past.

Thanks to open access and the likes of Blurb, Issuu, Scribd, Kindle Direct Publishing, iBooks Author and AAAAARG.org , publishing a book is something nearly everyone can do today in a matter of minutes. Yet what is most interesting about electronic publishing is not so much that bringing out a book is becoming more like blogging or vanity publication, with authority and certification provided as much by an author’s reputation or readership, or the number of times a text is visited, downloaded, cited, referenced, linked to, blogged about, tagged, bookmarked, ranked, rated or ‘liked’, as it is by conventional peer-review or the prestige of the press. All of those criteria still rest upon and retain fairly conventional notions of the book, the author, publication and so on. Far more interesting is the way certain developments in electronic publishing contain at least the potential for us to perceive the book as something that is not completely fixed, stable and unified, with definite limits and clear material edges, but as liquid and living, open to being continually and collaboratively written, edited, annotated, critiqued, updated, shared, supplemented, revised, re-ordered, reiterated and reimagined. So much so that, as some have indeed suggested, perhaps soon we will no longer call such things books at all, e- or otherwise. On the other hand, perhaps ‘book’ is as good a name as any since – as examples as apparently different as the Bible and Shakespeare’s First Folio show – books, historically, have always been liquid and living: electronic publishing has simply helped make us more aware of the fact.

There is currently a general air of euphoria concerning the potential for electronic publishing on CD‐ROM and over the Internet. Yet many publishers are proceeding cautiously and are supplementing their print products with CD‐ROM or online full text products. Most publishers view the future for electronic publishing as uncertain, not because they can not see the potential of the technology, but because they are unsure of the extent of acceptance of electronic information products in the marketplace.

Many knowledge-based organizations are expanding their publishing efforts to include electronic publishing. This article gives evidence of this move and discusses the factors that have been instrumental in promoting electronic publishing. The importance of information stucture and adherence to open standards are emphasized as critical components of digital document management systems. The development and use of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) are discussed along with their strengths and weaknesses as tools of electronic publishing. An emerging alternative, Extensible Markup Language (XML), is described as having features that may reduce some of the impediments to producing and managing documents digitally.

The advent of electronic documents and the consequent creation of digital libraries—vast repositories of electronic information—has a profound impact on how we produce, organize, store, retrieve and consume information. All of these activities have been dictated to the present by the technologies used to share information. A change in the underlying technology, namely, the move from paper to electronic documents, offers a unique opportunity to revolutionize how information is archived and disseminated. This paper will focus on a specific aspect of the opportunities opened up by electronic publishing on the NII—the ability to present information in multiple modalities and thereby free it from any single presentation medium. Traditional printed communication relies on a passive intermediary, paper, for the exchange of information between the author and reader. Ideas put down on paper come back to life only when perused by the reader. Electronic publishing is mediated by a computer, an agent capable of processing the information. As a consequence, the ideas expressed by an author need no longer be bound to any single “display” form; nor does it require human intervention to translate the information from one displayed form to another. Electronic information can be processed and displayed in a manner best suited to each individual‘s needs. Thus, the advent of electronic documents makes information available in more than its visual form—electronic information can now be display-independent. Traditionally, an electronic document has been viewed simply as digitally representing (or the means towards producing) the printed page. Instead, we view the electronic document as the basic entity that represents information; we allow the information to be rendered in different ways—on paper, spoken, processed in different ways by a computer, etc. This change of viewpoint has allowed us to develop ASTER (Audio System For Technical Readings) a computing system that audio formats electronic documents to produce audio documents. ASTER can speak both literary texts and highly technical documents that contain complex mathematics. Moreover, the listener can ask to have parts of a document repeated in different ways: a document has many different spoken views. The adequacy of the audio rendering depends on how well the electronic document captures the essential internal structure of the information. In this paper, we discuss capturing structure and give guidelines for authors to follow to ensure that their documents exhibit structure adequately. In the context of the NII, the digital libraries of the future can be viewed as large information servers that allow multiple clients to access and display information in a format chosen by the user. By obviating the need to move physical media, e.g., printed paper or recorded tapes, the NII enables the ready dissemination of multimodal renderings of information.

David Brailsford is the John Dunford Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, UK. In 1986 he co-founded the Computer Science department and he was appointed to the Dunford chair in 1990. He served as Head of Department from 1990 to 1998. Since 1982 his research interests have focused on digital documents and on document engineering. He was General Chair for the first of the biennial "EP" conferences, which was held in Nottingham in 1986. This conference series then transformed into the annual, ACM-sponsored, Document Engineering Symposium from 2001 onwards. He has been on the program committee for these conferences since 1986 and he served as Program Chair for DocEng2006. In 1988 he founded the Wiley journal "Electronic Publishing" which he edited for 10 years. Arising from this journal John Wiley Ltd funded a long-running research project, at Nottingham, on the automated internal hyperlinking of journals in PDF format. This led to a further collaboration with Wendy Hall, at the University of Southampton, on the more general hyperlinking of journal articles in a variety of formats. David has collaborated with Adobe Systems Inc. on digital document research for more than 20 years. His research group became the first UK beta test site for Adobe Acrobat in 1992 and, over the years, six of his graduate students have supplemented their research training by undertaking summer internships at Adobe. Most of the joint research has centered around structured document components in PDF but more recently interest has turned to the possibilities for rich media documents in Adobe's AIR. Since 2003 his Document Engineering Research Group has also collaborated with HP Laboratories on research topics ranging from XSLT transformations through to Variable Data Printing and eBooks.
