Attitudes Toward Community Service Among Higher Health Sciences Students

ABSTRACTThere have been few studies comparing the attitudes towards healthcare teams between different universities. This study analysed the differences in attitudes towards healthcare teams between health science students at Gunma University, Japan, which implements a comprehensive interprofessional education (IPE) programme, and Kanazawa University, a similar national university. Study populations were first- and third-year students at the Gunma University School of Health Sciences and the Kanazawa University School of Health Sciences. The present study was performed just after the IPE and multi-professional education subjects at Gunma University in the first term of the 2012 academic year. The first-year students were different cohort from the third-year students. The modified Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS) was used to measure attitudes towards healthcare teams. The overall mean score on the modified ATHCTS of students at Gunma University was significantly higher than that of those at Kanazawa University. In both first- and third-year students, the regression factor score of “patient-centred care” was significantly higher at Gunma University than at Kanazawa University. Based on the present study, it can be stated that IPE may foster the value of collaborative practice (CP) among health science students.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the attitudes towards physician–pharmacist collaboration among pharmacy students in order to develop an interprofessional education (IPE) opportunity through integrating cooperative learning (CL) into a team-based student-supported community service event. The study also aimed to assess the change in students’ attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration after participation in the event. A bilingual version of the Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician–Pharmacist Collaboration (SATP2C) in English and Chinese was completed by pharmacy students enrolled in Wuhan University of Science and Technology, China. Sixty-four students (32 pharmacy students and 32 medical students) in the third year of their degree volunteered to participate in the IPE opportunity for community-based diabetes and hypertension self-management education. We found the mean score of SATP2C among 235 Chinese pharmacy students was 51.44. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.90. Our key finding was a significant increase in positive attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration after participation in the IPE activity. These data suggest that there is an opportunity to deliver IPE in Chinese pharmacy education. It appears that the integration of CL into an interprofessional team-based community service offers a useful approach for IPE.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the increase in students' Attitudes toward Science by using the Discovery Learning model on the topic of ecology and biodiversity. The method used in this research is the pre-experimental method with One Group Pretests-Posttests. The research instrument used in this study is the Arabic-Speaking Students Attitudes toward Science Survey (ASSASS) questionnaire. This research was conducted in one of the schools in Bandung City with a total of 30 research subjects in class VII, consisting of 12 boys and 18 girls. This study's results indicate a significant increase in Attitude Toward Science of students with an average pretest of 53% and posttest of 70%, which is indicated by a total N-Gain score of 0.30 (sufficient). The N-Gain score on the attitude toward science and science learning indicator is 0.27 (low), the Unfavorable outlook indicator is 0.29 (low), the Control belief indicator is 0.26 (low), and the Behavioral belief indicator is 0.32 (sufficient). The Intention indicator is 0.37 (sufficient). Based on the results of this study, the implementation of the Discovery Learning model can be an alternative learning model in improving students' attitudes toward Science.

This study examines the attitudes of students in Medical and Health Sciences faculties in Turkey toward Syrians and identifies the factors shaping these attitudes. 465 students were included in the cross-sectional study. Data were collected via an online survey form, which included demographic questions and the Attitudes Towards Syrians Scale. The survey included demographic questions and the Attitudes Toward Syrians Scale. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and linear regression analysis were employed for data analysis. Age was negatively correlated with discrimination scores (r=-0.203, p < 0.001), suggesting that older students exhibited lower levels of discrimination. Students with negative experiences involving Syrians had significantly higher discrimination scores (p < 0.001). Those perceiving fewer cultural similarities also had higher discrimination scores (p < 0.001). Faculty differences were significant, with Health Sciences students displaying higher discrimination scores than medical students (p = 0.008). Among departments, Emergency and Disaster Management students reported the highest levels of discrimination (p < 0.001). Age, cultural perceptions, and personal experiences influence students' attitudes toward Syrians. Cultural awareness programs and opportunities for positive interactions may help reduce discrimination, particularly among younger students and those with limited cultural engagement. These findings emphasize the importance of inclusive education policies in fostering social cohesion within healthcare settings.

Background: Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) have become a significant global concern due to their devastating impact on women, men, and infants. For instance, more than one million new cases of STDs are reported daily worldwide, with the majority being asymptomatic. Therefore, understanding the knowledge and attitudes toward these infections is essential. Objective: To assess the knowledge and attitudes toward STDs among undergraduates at KIU, Sri Lanka. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 390 undergraduates at KIU, and the ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Review Committee of KIU (KIU/ERC/2021/202). Data were collected using a pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire consisting of 48 items. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 using descriptive statistics. For the total knowledge score, a score below 90 was considered poor, 90-106 was categorized as moderate, and 106-154 as good. In the attitude section, scores below 20 indicated a poor attitude, 20-22 indicated a moderate attitude, and 22-24 indicated a good attitude. Results: Of the participants, 68% (n=265) were female, 75% (n=294) were aged 21-25, and 46% (n=180) were Buddhists. Most of the participants (85%, n=332) were single, studied biology (70%, n=273) and were in health sciences (74%, n=287). Additionally, 65% (n=252) were unemployed, with 57% (n=222) in other jobs. The primary sources of STD knowledge were school (77%, n=299), internet (75%, n=292), and social media (71%, n=278). Among the 390 participants, 34% (n=133) demonstrated good knowledge, while 44% (n=171) showed good attitudes toward STDs. Conclusion: Undergraduates of KIU showed a good level of knowledge and attitudes toward STDs. However, the results emphasize the need for targeted educational interventions, particularly for non-health science students, for more comprehensive STD awareness and safer sexual practices.

ABSTRACTIn order to provide dying individuals with the necessary care, firstly nurses and nursing students should be aware of their own emotions regarding death. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between death anxiety and attitudes toward the care of dying patient in nursing students. This study planned as a descriptive was carried out 376 students who were educated in the first, second, third and fourth grades of the nursing department of faculty of health sciences of a university in Turkey. Data were collected with ‘Death Anxiety Scale’ and ‘Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD-Form B)’. The students’ mean score on the death anxiety scale was 32.98 ± 15.01 and their mean score on the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale was 105.09 ± 9.42. The level of death anxiety is different in gender and the classes. Also, it is inversely related to the attitude toward the care of the dying patients. It is important to reduce death anxiety in order to increase positive attitudes toward the care of the dying patient.

We examined the effects of a gerontology course and an intergenerational service-learning project for people with dementia (PWD) on three dimensions of students' attitudes including attitudes toward older people, community service for older people, and working with PWD. Data consisted of a combination of pretest/posttest survey and review of journals that students maintained during the service-learning project. Results indicated that students who completed the gerontology course, and those who completed both the course and the service-learning project, reported significantly more positive attitudes toward older adults, whereas students in the course only had significantly less positive attitudes about working with PWD, and those in the other courses (sociology) showed no change in their attitudes. Students' journals are replete with reports of the satisfaction they derived from their experiences. The findings highlight opportunities and challenges that should be considered in future intergenerational service-learning programs and gerontological education.

The aims of this paper were to predict membership to a group of attitude of acceptance or ambiguity-rejection toward homosexuality, and describe the attitude levels. The Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay men (ATLG) scale was applied to a non-probability sample of 239 single heterosexual men. All of them were students of health sciences. 15% expressed rejection (including 4% extreme) based on the ATLG total score. Rejection toward gay men (28% including 7% extreme) was higher than toward lesbians (9% including 2.5% extreme). Not having homosexual friends and having adscription to Christian or Catholic religions were significant predictors of belonging to the group with an ambiguity-rejection attitude. It is concluded that the percentage of rejection toward homosexuality is significant. For this reason it is encouraged to implement workshops for promoting an acceptance attitude, and consider these risk variables in their design.

Active learning is an important shift in pedagogical paradigms in recent decades. Previous studies establish many benefits from this learning strategy. However, an implementation is challenging. This study aimed to clarify an explanation of the benefits and challenges of active learning from various educational field students’ perspectives. This study was conducted in a general education course at Chulalongkorn University. Underpinning with a mixed-method study, 22 undergraduates were interviewed in a focus group study. Results were analyzed with deductive thematic analysis and contributed to 23 items in close-ended questionnaires for a cross-sectional quantitative survey study. Notably, 222 undergraduates revealed their attitude toward active learning including benefits and challenges. Quantitative data were analyzed with analytical statistics including the Mann-Whitney U test, and these results are supported by thick descriptions derived from the qualitative data. This study revealed students’ attitude in benefits of active learning dividing into cognitive domain, student efficacy, and 21st century skills, and also challenges of active learning in teachers, students, and pedagogical aspects. Health science undergraduates tended to agree that active learning exposure enhances effective active learning than non-health science undergraduates (U = 2843, p = 0.029). An educational theory is also discussed with these results, and an educational implication to achieve an effective learning strategy is presented in this study.

This study demonstrated that a less scientific worldview predicted health science (HS) students' positive attitude towards complementary-alternative medicine (CAM), independently of important background characteristics as gender, pre-college science immersion, age, and type of HS education of the students. A total of 473 students in their final 3rd year of education in the health sciences (nursing, physiotherapy, social educator, and radiography) participated in teh study, which was based on a questionnaire consisting of items mapping student background characteristics and their attitudes towards worldview reflecting statements in constructs. The results showed that large fractions of the HS students were positive towards the use of CAM treatments. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that 24 % of the total variance in HS students' positive attitude towards the use of CAM than the HS students' background characteristics alone, which accounted for only 2 % of the total variance. HS students' Paranormal beliefs, and their Willingness to include CAM in HS education were the most important predictors. The study results suggest stronger emphasis on teaching about epistemologies in HS educations.

Globalization and increasing international mobility intensify the importance of intercultural competencies in public trust professions. Previous research indicates that cultural intelligence and multicultural personality are crucial in intercultural interactions. The aim of this study was to assess the level of cultural intelligence, multicultural personality traits, and perceptions of cultural differences among students of social sciences, medical sciences, and health sciences. In Poland, the scale of cross-border contacts continues to grow, creating an educational challenge in preparing future professionals for work in multicultural environments. The study employed a proprietary questionnaire along with the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and the short version of the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ SF-40). A total of 102 students from a large university in southern Poland participated in the study. The findings revealed that social science students demonstrated significantly higher levels of cultural intelligence compared to students of medical and health sciences. Cultural intelligence was positively correlated with cultural empathy, open-mindedness, social initiative, and emotional stability. To date, no studies in Poland have addressed this issue. The results highlight the need to design educational programs that foster intercultural competencies while considering the specific professional roles and differences in student preparation.

Background: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into academic environments has been on the rise to enhance research productivity and improve the quality of academic writing. Despite the growing interest in this area, empirical evidence on the measurable impact of AI-based training on academic writing skills remains limited. The aim of this community service activity was to enhance the participants' academic writing skills through a structured AI-assisted training program. Methods: This community service program was conducted over a three-day period in May 2025 at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. A total of 30 university students volunteered to participate in this study. The community service program comprised five stages: preparation, socialization, training implementation, and evaluation. The training methods included socialization, counseling, workshops, and hands-on practicums focusing on AI-based academic writing. The evaluation was executed employing a pretest–posttest design, in which a writing rubric was used to assess the participants’ academic writing skills. Results: The analysis indicated a significant improvement in writing performance following the AI-based training. The mean pretest score was recorded at 65.3 (SD = 7.5), while the posttest mean reached 81.2 (SD = 6.8). The paired-sample t-test highlighted a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores (t = 8.24, df = 29, p &lt; 0.001). Conclusion: The AI-based academic writing training implemented through this community service program effectively enhanced the participants’ writing skills. This program demonstrates that AI-assisted training can be an effective model for strengthening academic writing competence in community service initiatives.

Background: Human papilloma virus is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection globally. It is a well-established cause of cervical cancer and about 75% of sexually active women and men will acquire this infection at some time in life. This study assessed the risk perception of human papilloma virus infection and its vaccine uptake among university students in Jos, Plateau State Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey conducted among 300 university students who were selected using a multistage sampling technique. A semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to assess risk perception and vaccine uptake. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23. Associations between independent and dependent variables were determined using χ2 test while binary logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with risk perception, with significant value set at &lt; 0.05. Results: Respondents’ awareness of human papilloma virus infection and the vaccine was 148 (49.3%) and 62(20.7%) respectively. Ninety four (31.3%) students had good risk perception of the infection while 206 (68.7%) had poor perception. Three (1.0%) students had taken the vaccine with no statistically significant difference between health and social science students (p = 0.05). Health science students had 3 times better risk perception than social science students (OR = 3.42, 95% CI = 2.03 - 5.77; P&lt; 0.001). Conclusion: Human papilloma virus infection risk perception and vaccine uptake were poor among Jos University students. There is a need to improve the vaccine uptake through awareness creation and advocacy in Nigeria.

Aim: To compare levels of future anxiety, sleep quality, and quality of life between Health Sciences and Literature faculty students, and to examine the relationships among these variables. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 200 undergraduates (100 from each faculty) at a Turkish public university. Future anxiety was measured with Zaleski’s Future Anxiety Scale; sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); and quality of life with the SF-36 survey. Independent t-tests and chi-square tests assessed group differences, and Pearson correlations evaluated associations among anxiety, sleep, and quality of life. Results: Health Sciences students had better overall sleep quality (lower PSQI global scores, p = 0.007) and lower future anxiety (p = 0.03) than Literature students. They also scored higher on most quality of life domains (social functioning, mental health, vitality, etc., p &lt; 0.05 each). No significant group differences were found in physical functioning or emotional role scores. Overall, poorer sleep quality correlated with higher future anxiety (r = 0.28, p &lt; 0.01) and lower quality of life (r = –0.36, p &lt; 0.01). Future anxiety was also inversely correlated with quality of life (r = –0.21, p &lt; 0.05). Conclusion: Students in fields with less certain career prospects experience greater future anxiety, worse sleep, and lower quality of life than those in fields with more defined career paths. University-level interventions- such as career counseling, stress management, and sleep education- are recommended to mitigate future anxiety and improve student well-being.
