Abstract

Analysis of variance studies have shown that pre-course (pretest) attitudinal differences exist between eventual student users and non-users of a non-mandatory resource room, in a traditionally taught, lecture/lab introductory college geology course. Higher (more positive) attitudes were seen within the eventual user group. Posttest studies have shown that the eventual users of the resource room maintained their pretest attitudes, but that attitudes of eventual non-users dropped significantly below even their pretest levels. The same types of analyses were also performed on data from students taking a non-traditional “coursette” approach, described in an earlier paper (Dunn and Carpenter, 1979). Again attitudes were measured before and after the course, on both eventual student users and non-users of the resource room. Both groups maintained their pretest attitudes, which, numerically, were identical to the attitudes of the traditional class users of the resource room. A voluntarily used resource room, th...
