The integration of immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (XR) is rapidly transforming education across various disciplines. This paper aims to synthesize current research on their applications, outcomes, and future directions in shaping modern learning. These technologies enhance multi-sensory experiences, improving information perception and learning efficiency beyond traditional methods. Studies consistently show enhanced academic achievement and learning performance; for example, Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) classrooms lead to statistically significant improvements in student post-test scores and better memory recall. A crucial impact is the increase in student motivation and engagement, with students reporting higher interest and enjoyment when learning with IVR. Immersive tools like Oculus maximize learning, particularly in anatomy, by enabling better understanding and visualization. They also offer safe platforms for realistic simulations, facilitate distance education and can even reduce cognitive load by providing visualized knowledge organization. The methodologies employed to evaluate these effects include quantitative analyses, gaze-based attention networks, surveys and systematic reviews. The evolving Metaverse further promises future highly interactive learning experiences. This paper provides a comprehensive and critical examination of how immersive technologies are currently being utilized in educational settings, to evaluate their pedagogical effectiveness, and to identify emerging trends and challenges that will shape their future development and implementation in learning environments.
