Automated Educational Course Metadata Generation Based on Semantics Discovery

The Second International Workshop on Trends in Functional Programming in Education, TFPIE 2013, was held on May 13, 2013 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA. The goal of TFPIE is to gather researchers, professors, teachers, and all professionals interested in functional programming in education. Submissions were vetted by the TFPIE 2013 program committee using prevailing academic standards. The 2 articles in this volume were selected for publication as the result of this process. Tobin-Hochstadt and Van Horn report on their solution to the difficult transition between the first semester course in functional programming (using languages, programming environment, etc. intended for teaching) to the second semester course in object-oriented programming (with a production-oriented language, environment, etc.). Finding that this confusing circumstance made the key concepts hard to grasp for students, the authors present and evaluate a new introduction to the second semester course, based on the environment and languages the students used before, that focusses on key object-oriented concepts. Caldwell lays out an education narrative that focusses on reasoning about programs, using structural induction principles. He argues that more such formal reasoning should get more emphasis in programming education and demonstrates the feasibility thereof by reporting on his experiences using this narrative in the functional programming course at the University of Wyoming.

This paper argues that the current education system needs a rational and radical change from the objective of materialistic education to humanistic education. Hence, incorporation of human values education (AICTE, 2017) in the modern education system particularly in higher education including both technical and non-technical streams becomes the fulcrum point of this paper. A critical analysis on the Gen Z learners’ aversive mindset towards the current learning routines and education system is presented for discussion. As a remedial approach, a bunch of refreshing rough and ready but pragmatic learning strategies are advocated to nurture them both with human values and employability skills. Even in the scientific/digital era, it is noted with big concern that this civilized nation irrationally exercises discrimination and disparity across the globe. As a remedial action, the teaching fraternity should impart human values education without any compromises because the creation of a better world is only in the hands of rational teachers and compassionate Gen Z students. Finally, this paper places the following question for the perusal of the whole academia, “Which is essential to prepare the Gen Z to stand against all types of discrimination and live a harmonious life: a balanced curriculum inclusive of human values/moral values and competitive skills or a restricted curriculum imparting only technical knowledge and competitive skills excluding human values/moral values?”.

To impart this art: The development of graduate surgical education in the United States

Under the current educational system, students have long been harmed by the "educational pattern" with "high pressure" and the "standard" question and answer system, which result in both physical and mental distortion of varying degrees, and many educational problems.Although educational departments have adopted various measures to solve the above problems, the effects are less than satisfactory.Based on the in-depth analysis on Taoism educational concept of "wordless teaching", this paper explores the great wisdoms in Taoism, analyzes the underlying reasons of the disadvantages of current education, and provides the implementation of "wordless teaching" with self-examination, elicitation and general benefits, hoping to play a role of radically reform in value judgment, and thus resolving the numerous problems in the current education to a certain extent.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-enabled virtual laboratories provide an online learning experience with the aid of computer-based instructional materials (animation, simulation, and remote-trigger experiments) for improving the active learning process. The project reported on in this chapter was set up in order to enhance university and college education, which is now becoming an advanced training environment for solving the geographical, social, and economic challenges faced in the interdisciplinary field of science education, especially in India. In order to study the role of biotechnology virtual laboratories in the current education system, a pedagogical survey, via workshops and online feedback, was carried out among several student and teacher groups of different Indian universities. This chapter reports how virtual labs in biotechnology can be used to improve teaching and learning experiences in an easy and understandable way with user interaction and how such tools serve to effectively reduce the problems of laboratory education especially in remote areas. The results obtained from user-feedback analysis suggest the use of virtual labs as a recommended component in blended education in large classroom scenarios for enhancing autonomous learning process and as an alternative to enhance lab education in geographically remote and economically challenged institutes.

There is currently no universally accepted core collection of competencies or medical education material for medical students. Individual medical schools create their own competencies and set of educational material using a variety of approaches. What has resulted is a medical education system wherein medical students are trained without any burden of proof that they are indeed competent in agreed upon areas of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors befit of a graduating medical student. In fact, the only uniform assurance a member of the public in the United States can have for a graduating allopathic medical student is that the student has successfully passed USMLE Step 1 and 2 by correctly answering a rumored 55–65% of questions correctly (yes, that is an F) and that they have maintained at least a “C” average or “Pass” equivalent in all of their medical school courses. This article discusses these inadequacies within the current medical education system, and the need to standardize the competencies and curricula for all medical schools through a narrative disclosing this author's experience with trying to initiate such a movement at his own medical school.

An understanding of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and educative materials has been critical to our teaching programs in illumination engineering. We will discuss the PCK basis of a number of innovative curriculum efforts at the National Optical Astronomy and how we develop “educative materials” that improve educator content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and contextual knowledge. We also describe the process and team approach required to create these “educative materials.” The foundation of our work at NOAO were two previous projects at the NASA Classroom of the Future. These projects created educative curricular materials with sophisticated science content integrated with a deep, authentic understanding of science process. Additional curricula with these attributes were developed at NOAO for the NSF-sponsored Hands-On Optics project (SPIE, OSA, and NOAO), for the citizen science project Globe at Night (NOAO), and for the Quality Lighting Teaching Kits (NOAO, International Astronomical Union, OSA Foundation, SPIE, CIE, and the International Dark Sky Association). These projects all strove to create educative instructional materials that can enhance the pedagogical content knowledge of educators.

Educational needs as perceived by faculty, private practitioners, and residents

In the current modern education system, there is an inter-scientific integration of general didactics with pedagogical special remedial work. Regarding the development of children's speech, this integration requires changes in the organizational structure of the general education process and becomes its systematizing factor which introduces innovations in learning technology. For the effective solution of this problem in teaching and education of a junior schoolchild with bilingualism it is necessary to introduce these innovative methods into the field of speech development. For this very reason in the 1990s, many scientists began working out specific technologies for the development of speech of junior schoolchildren. In a number of studies it has been noted that the main trend characterizing the image of modern education is integration of general educational and innovative areas in education. Integration is the most important means of education of children with speech difficulties: it modifies the organizational structure of the general educational process, and being a systematizing factor it performs a specific function in changing the learning technologies. Appraising the significance of this process it is necessary to notice that the integration introduces its own innovations. The technology of speech influence as a whole is a complex educational process with a new set of its own structural components, with extraordinary specifics, and moreover, it has definite prospects for further development. The practice guidelines we have examined do not limit the study of new technological solutions in creating our own model of the development of speech as a didactic system. The highlighting of other structural components is of great interest.

Our current educational system places the onus on individual professions to create large-scale change within the field of child maltreatment. Historically, each profession has expended significant time and resources to personally create and traverse their own pathway in addressing the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. The siloed structure of our current educational system inherently limits our collective vision and impact toward a safer future for children. Our greatest collective failing has been the failure to effectively shift the focus across professional disciplines from post-maltreatment intervention to that of primary prevention. Our vision for breaking down educational silos begins at the undergraduate level, continues throughout the graduate and post-graduate progression, and culminates in professional leadership training and mentorship. We are convinced that this multi-tiered educational approach will create the necessary foundation to support a collaborative approach to the design, dissemination, and implementation of a new era of within- and cross-systems best practices in child abuse prevention. Our paper will focus on the creation of the EndCAN Academy to serve as the unifying leader in this vision.

According to the survey it was found that the current education system focuses more on rote learning of subjects which is leading to the poor quality of education system, but to fill the handed to professional work environment and application oriented. To build this requirement gap, freshers are to be passed through a foundation on training programmer by employees for few months before they come on the job. For long term sustainable outcome, current Indian education system is to be more application oriented. Around the world, employers, educators, policymakers, training organizations and others have recognized the critical importance of tackling the skills gap. The main key characteristics for the teaching and learning across the various fields of i.e. general, academic, vocational and technical, should incorporate various strategies, which wholly depends on learning environment, teaching methods of learners and various supporting factors. In order to increase the economy of the country and to solve the skills gap, it is very much important that higher education (Professional and Technical) should be allowed to increase access and completion, and evolve with career opportunities. These strategies are determined partly on subject matter to be taught and partly by the nature of learners developing reciprocity and cooperation. Through the research paper, researcher want to attempt to find solution in analyzing the role of higher education in bridging the skill gap and other related factors on professional institutes of Jaipur by drawing certain conclusion confronting a problem.

El movimiento estudiantil chileno combina masivas manifestaciones contra el actual sistema educativo con una propuesta de un nuevo proyecto, concitando el apoyo mayoritario de la ciudadanía. Los conservadores defienden el sistema actual, basado en la concepción neoliberal de Hayek y Friedman, instaurada durante la dictadura de Pinochet y perfeccionada en el período postautoritario. Los dirigentes estudiantiles y los sectores críticos luchan por una educación pública gratuita y de calidad, y por el fin del lucro en la educación privada. Esta postura articula el republicanismo de la historia nacional con el de las tradiciones europeas libertarias.

This article introduces the process carried out for creating two Learning Objects (LOs) linked to the operation of inserting an element into a vector, in Pascal. It starts with the motivation to attend a concrete educational need in relation to the learning of the topic in initial Programming courses. To this end, the development of complementary educational materials is proposed. The decision to create LOs is mainly based on the reutilization and autonomy features offered by LOs, which set them apart from other educational materials types. To create the LOs, the CROA Methodology is used. Finally, a first evaluation of the LOs in which educators are involved is carried out.

The Ministry of Education and Culture responded by issuing a policy of learningfrom home, through online learning, the current education system must be ready tomake the leap to transform online learning for all students. E-learning is a distancelearning process whose implementation is supported by computers and internettechnology, so that the learning process can be carried out at any time without ameeting between lecturers and students. From the explanation above, a study wasconducted that measured the Level of Satisfaction of E-learning Students at Indo GlobalMandiri University using the End User Computing Sastification (EUCS) method. Thisresearch will analyze the level of student satisfaction using the E-learning web whichhas an important role in higher education. Analysis of the level of satisfaction usingEUCS is expected to be a measuring tool for the success of a system The model of EndUser Computing Satisfication (EUSC) was developed by Doll & Torkzadeh. EUCS is amethod that can be used to measure the level of satisfaction of users of a system, bycomparing expectations and reality of a system. Evaluation using the EUCS model ismore focused on end user satisfaction with technological aspects. The dimensions inEnd User Computing Satisfaction (EUCS) according to Doll & Torkzadeh are five, namelycontent (Content), accuracy (Accuracy), form (Format).From the results of dataprocessing that has been done previously, it can be concluded in this study that theresults of quantitative analysis on the variable respondents who strongly agree (SS) are80.0%, who agree 20.0% so it can be concluded that user satisfaction with theperformance of e-learning students of Indo Global Mandiri University, Faculty ofInformatics Engineering is very satisfied.

This study utilizes life history analysis to explore the class reproduction process among migrant youths in Beijing, the capital city of China. Eight migrant youths were interviewed about their life histories using a life-line interview methodology. Results showed that these migrant youths could be classified into four groups based on their residential location and the duration of their residence in Beijing, each representing distinctive characteristics. Limited family educational background, poor quality of school education and unstable community environment were common experiences among the youths. In addition, the hukou system and other social policies that restricted education opportunities for these migrant youths contributed to the class reproduction process. Thus, the current education system, family background and social policy all adversely affect the opportunities of migrant youths to choose different life paths from their parents. This article then offers suggestions for changes in policy formulation and social services to improve social mobility for migrant youths.
