Automated Storage and Retrieval System Simulation and Optimization Based on Flexsim

In recent years, the competitive pressure on manufacturing companies shifted them from mass production to mass customization to produce large variety of products. It is a great challenge for companies nowadays to produce customized mixed flow mode of production to meet customized demand on time. Due to large variety of products, the storage system to deliver variety of products to production lines influences on the timely production of variety of products, as investigated from by simulation study of an inefficient storage system of a real Company, in the current research. Therefore, current research proposed a slotting optimization model with mixed model sequence to assemble in consideration of the final flow lines to optimize whole automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) and distribution system in the case company. Current research is aimed to minimize vertical height of centre of gravity of AS/RS and total time spent for taking the materials out from the AS/RS simultaneously. Genetic algorithm is adopted to solve the proposed problem and computational result shows significant improvement in stability and efficiency of AS/RS as compared to the existing method used in the case company.

This paper presents a simulation model framework for unit-load automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) able to cope with most of the features found in industrial settings like, for example, multiple aisles, non aisle-captive cranes or double-deep unit-load AS/RS. Although these features characterize most of the industrial applications, they have been simply neglected by most of the previously published research oriented papers, which explains at least partially the low impact of the research output in practice. To help mitigating this drawback, this paper first presents an up-to-date chronological literature survey, which includes works that use any form of simulation in the modeling process. It then proposes an Object-Oriented Simulation Model for unit-load AS/RS developed with a purely generic mindset. In this model, the physical design decisions are separated from the operational decisions, which makes it possible, first, to obtain a better understanding of AS/RS dynamics and, second, to increase the model's flexibility and generality, thus allowing many interesting scenarios to be represented. In particular, the simulation modeling framework has been used to develop a simulator and to conduct a preliminary study on a multi-aisle AS/RS.

Travel time models for automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are used to define average travel times during storage/retrieval operations in an AS/RS. With an increasing depth of AS/RS racks, storage goods are stored in front of each other. This can lead to relocation operations of blocking goods causing higher travel times. This paper derives analytically and presents four travel time models for multi-deep AS/RS following four storage allocation strategies. Two models handle random strategies, one minimises the variance of storage channel fillings and the fourth maximises this variance. Evaluation and comparison of different models is followed by a discrete event simulation to verify these models. It is shown that the minimal variance strategy achieves the lowest relocation numbers and also the lowest total travel times, the random strategies perform between the minimal and maximal variance strategy.

Performance analysis of a large man-machine system such as an Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) is a complex problem. Several approaches exist for carrying out such investigations. Frequently, a combination of these techniques is utilized. This paper presents a combinatorial approach to evaluating the performance of a mini-load system, with computer simulation as the primary tool of investigation.

Automated warehouses are critical to modern supply chains. One type of automation is the automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS), which improves efficiency, reduces operational costs, and enhances inventory control. Among several optimisation problems in AS/RS, this paper focuses on the order sequencing problem (OSP) in a multi-level shuttle system, which involves finding the optimal sequence of a given number of picking orders to minimise the makespan. Because the objective function of the OSP is difficult to formulate mathematically, stochastic simulation is often used for evaluation, despite its potentially high computational cost. To address this challenge, a neural network-based metamodel (or surrogate model) is proposed to approximate the objective function. The predictive capabilities of recurrent neural networks (RNN), long short-term memory networks (LSTM), and gated recurrent units (GRU) were evaluated, with GRU identified as the most effective in predicting the makespan required to complete the order set. The GRU model was then embedded into an improved particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm designed to solve the OSP. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the GRU-based PSO approach, showing competitive performance against established methods such as first-in-first-out, random search, multi-start simulated annealing, genetic algorithm, and standard PSO. • Order sequencing problem in automated storage and retrieval systems. • Evaluation of recurrent neural network-based metamodels to predict the makespan. • Computational performance comparison with a discrete event simulation model. • Integration of the best metamodel with a metaheuristic to solve the problem. • Comparison of the proposed metaheuristic with state-of-the-art approaches.

본 논문은 물류 정보시스템과 관련된 자동입출고 시스템의 실행 및 최적화에 관한 것이다. 논문은 우선 문헌연구와 이에 따른 사례연구를 제시하고 있다. 사례연구에서는 기업의 프로세스를 분석한 다음 자동입출고 시스템의 실행 및 활용에 대해 조사하였다. 물류정보시스템은 글로벌 환경에서 경쟁력을 유지하기 위해 주요한 구성요소이며 사례연구에서의 기업은 효율적인 물리적 배분관리에 적용하였다. 자동입출고시스템은 저장공간을 극대화하고 생산성 증가, 정확성을 증가시키는 것으로 판명되고 특히 비좁은 통로와 높은 저장선반의 경우 효과적임을 보여주었다. This work focuses on the implementation and optimization of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS) which is associated with Logistics Information System(LIS). We survey literature and present a case study for the optimization of Logistics System. In the case study, we examine the adaptation and implementation of AS/RS after we analyzed the processes of the company. Logistics Information System is an important component to keep up with the competitive advantage in the global business environments. The company in the case applies LIS to its efficient physical distribution management. AS/RS leads to some benefits; maximized storage space, increased productivity, reduced labor costs and human error, and improved accuracy. AS/RS is found especially effective when working with narrow aisles and extremely high racks.

System investment decision has a very crucial role in any company aiming for efficient manufacturing. Multi-criteria decision making process is required to select the best among the alternatives. In this study, fuzzy AHP and fuzzy TOPSIS methods are used in a two-step methodology to select the suitable automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) so as to satisfy the expectations of the company. Eleven criteria are used in fuzzy AHP to calculate the criteria weights. These weights are then used in fuzzy TOPSIS to rank three AS/RS alternatives. The proposed model is used for selecting the right AS/RS in one of the leading consumer electronics company of Turkey.

Laboratory sample storage and retrieval is a time-consuming necessity/problem for many clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories, especially when samples must be stored at −20 or −70°C. In many cases, the volume of samples to be stored and the records to be kept become difficult and frequently impossible. The installation of an automatic storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) utilizing bar code technology to maintain the sample database is a practical solution for many laboratories. Upfront planning and clear definition of objectives and constraints is primary for the conceptual and final design of the system. One major pharmaceutical research facility utilized this approach to successfully install their AS/RS. The system consisted of five basic components: Environmental chamber to maintain a good robot work area. Freezer cabinets consisting of pull out drawers. Track-mounted robot. Input and output conveyors. Interface PC system for communication between the robot controller and the host–server database. Scientists normally input their requirements in the afternoon theday before the samples are required, allowing the AS/RS to build and store racks for delivery the next morning. The host–server database receives the request, and tasks are broken down into actions and fed to the robot controller for execution. As each action is completed, it is reported back to the interface PC, and status registers are continuously updated. The AS/RS is tireless, precise, and a work producer that can eliminate one of the problems for laboratories. Sample locations are known, samples are always available upon demand, and accurate record keeping provides laboratory storage quality assurance. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A survey of literature on automated storage and retrieval systems

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are essential to the logistics system. The cost of this transportation can be reduced by improving the operation efficiency of AS/RS and decreasing the time required for in and out of warehouse orders. However, a bottleneck exists in the automated warehouse’s transportation capability and the sizeable occupied area. Therefore, the four-way shuttle-based storage system with stacker and four-way shuttle cars as a scheduling tool can increase the land utilization rate and reduce the time of input and output tasks. Meanwhile, the improved grey wolf optimizer and greedy algorithm are used to optimize the process of determining the location-allocation and delivery vehicle scheduling. The simulation shows that the optimization algorithm increases the shelf utilization rate and reduces time consumption by 28% and 17% respectively contrasting initial results. The advantages of an optimization algorithm can be fully reflected compared with the results of random scheduling.

To reduce material handling costs, distribution centers purchase automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). It is often the case that the capacity of the AS/RS is insufficient to store all items. The distribution center must then decide which items to assign to the AS/RS and in what quantities they will be stored. In this paper, we develop a heuristic procedure to solve this problem. A priori and a posteriori tests of the data for the optimality of this heuristic procedure are provided. The proposed procedure is testedwith data gathered fr oma naval supply center.

In this paper we present a methodology to evaluate policies for automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) in warehouses. It is composed by four steps: (1) formal definition of the physical AS/RS and descriptive modeling on a simulation framework; (2) model validation and finding of potential bottlenecks by the statistical analysis of data logs; (3) definition of operational optimization policies to mitigate such bottlenecks; (4) evaluation of the policies using the simulation tool through key performance indicators (KPI). In particular, we take into consideration a unit-load AS/RS, we present a new simulation model combining discrete events and agent based paradigms. We consider an industrial test case, focusing on scheduling policies that exploit mathematical optimization, and we evaluate the effects of our approach on real world data. Experiments prove the effectiveness of our methodology.

Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are used in warehouse expansions for companies of all sizes, often within an existing facility. A recent AS/RS installation in the Heinrich Reissdorf brewery in Cologne, Germany, added 33% more storage space to the already automated warehouse, without disruption to the warehousing system that was in place. This paper provides a case study example of an AS/RS installation.

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) have been widely used in warehousing systems to speed up load movements and save storage space. ASRS is an integrated system that is equipped with a controller and arm for the collection and storage of goods. This paper discusses the results of developing a system for taking and storing goods for various loads. The prototype element consists of a mechanism for retrieving, placing and application for data collection into the database. In this research, the design and development of ASRS was carried out to be applied in the storage of products of various sizes which is suitable for small size industries. The development process includes investigating features that have been developed in the ASRS, operating procedures, hardware selection and software development in accordance with the mechanism designed. Numerical control which moves the carrier element with high resolution is applied to be able to place the load in a changing position. Development and testing is carried out to ensure the performance of the tool runs well and the data storage that includes the identification and size of the load can be recorded properly.

Lean manufacturing is the backbone of any industry striving for high productivity. Die shop management is a critical function in the manufacturing of inserts. The top punch, bottom punch, die, and core rod decide the shape, size, and quality of the cutting tools. It is important to know the condition, availability of tools, and other details about the components in the press toolbox. This project is carried out in an industry where these tools are currently stored in a manual storage rack. This type of storage and retrieval method is time consuming and undesirable. Therefore, the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) approach is used,which is an alternative solution for optimizing the storage and retrieval method, and directly effects the production. ASRSs are warehousing frameworks that are utilized for the storage and recovery of items in both the distribution and production environments. Most of the checked-on models and arrangement strategies are used in ASRS to reduce wastage of time. The objective is to change an undesirable manual storing and retrieval method to a convenient ASRS system. This project intends to improve speed and accuracy, and hence prove to be a sound and economical process.
