Automorphic Forms and Galois Representations

Cohomology of Drinfeld Modular Varieties provides an introduction, in two volumes, both to this subject and to the Langlands correspondence for function fields. These varieties are the analogues for function fields of the Shimura varieties over number fields. The Langlands correspondence is a conjectured link between automorphic forms and Galois representations over a global field. By analogy with the number-theoretic case, one expects to establish the conjecture for function fields by studying the cohomology of Drinfeld modular varieties, which has been done by Drinfeld himself for the rank two case. This second volume is concerned with the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, and with the proof in some cases of the Rmamanujan-Petersson conjecture and the global Langlands conjecture for function fields. It is based on graduate courses taught by the author, who uses techniques which are extensions of those used to study Shimura varieties. Though the author considers only the simpler case of function rather than number fields, many important features of the number field case can be illustrated. Several appendices on background material keep the work reasonably self-contained. It is the first book on this subject and will be of much interest to all researchers in algebraic number theory and representation theory.

These are the notes of a five-lecture course presented at the Computations with Modular Forms summer school, aimed at graduate students in number theory and related areas. Sections 1–4 give a sketch of the theory of reductive algebraic groups over Q, and of Gross’s purely algebraic definition of automorphic forms in the special case when G(R) is compact. Sections 5–9 describe how these automorphic forms can be explicitly computed, concentrating on the case of definite unitary groups; and Sects. 10 and 11 describe how to relate the results of these computations to Galois representations, and present some examples where the corresponding Galois representations can be identified, giving illustrations of various instances of Langlands’ functoriality conjectures.KeywordsModular FormAlgebraic GroupReductive GroupCompact SubgroupAutomorphic FormThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Through basic research in mathematics, the NTT Institute for Fundamental Mathematics aims to enrich the "fountain of knowledge" that nourishes science and technology.In this article, we first provide an overview of the research being carried out at the Institute then introduce the Institute's core research areas: number theory, especially arithmetic dynamics; algebraic and arithmetic geometry; and representation theory and automorphic forms.

This paper starts by introducing a bi-periodic summation formula for automorphic forms on a group G(E), with periods by a subgroup G(F), where E/F is a quadratic extension of number fields. The split case, where E = F ⊕ F, is that of the standard trace formula. Then it introduces a notion of stable bi-conjugacy, and stabilizes the geometric side of the bi-period summation formula. Thus weighted sums in the stable bi-conjugacy class are expressed in terms of stable bi-orbital integrals. These stable integrals are on the same endoscopic groups H which occur in the case of standard conjugacy.The spectral side of the bi-period summation formula involves periods, namely integrals over the group of F-adele points of G, of cusp forms on the group of E-adele points on the group G. Our stabilization suggests that such cusp forms—with non vanishing periods—and the resulting bi-period distributions associated to “periodic” automorphic forms, are related to analogous bi-period distributions associated to “periodic” automorphic forms on the endoscopic symmetric spaces H(E)/H(F). This offers a sharpening of the theory of liftings, where periods play a key role.The stabilization depends on the “fundamental lemma”, which conjectures that the unit elements of the Hecke algebras on G and H have matching orbital integrals. Even in stating this conjecture, one needs to introduce a “transfer factor”. A generalization of the standard transfer factor to the bi-periodic case is introduced. The generalization depends on a new definition of the factors even in the standard case.Finally, the fundamental lemma is verified for SL(2).

Elementary Methods in Number Theory begins with first course in number for students with no previous knowledge of the subject. The main topics are divisibility, prime numbers, and congruences. There is also an introduction to Fourier analysis on finite abelian groups, and a discussion on the abc conjecture and its consequences in elementary number theory. In the second and third parts of the book, deep results in number theory are proved using only elementary methods. Part II is about multiplicative number theory, and includes two of the most famous results in mathematics: the Erdos-Selberg elementary proof of the prime number theorem, and Dirichlets theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions. Part III is an introduction to three classical topics in additive number theory: Warings problems for polynomials, Liouvilles method to determine the number of representations of an integer as the sum of an even number of squares, and the asymptotics of partition functions. Melvyn B. Nathanson is Professor of Mathematics at the City University of New York (Lehman College and the Graduate Center). He is the author of the two other graduate texts: Additive Number Theory: The Classical Bases and Additive Number Theory: Inverse Problems and the Geometry of Sumsets.

We extend the methods of Wiles and of Taylor and Wiles from GL 2 to higher rank unitary groups and establish the automorphy of suitable conjugate self-dual, regular (de Rham with distinct Hodge-Tate numbers), minimally ramified, l -adic lifts of certain automorphic mod l Galois representations of any dimension. We also make a conjecture about the structure of mod l automorphic forms on definite unitary groups, which would generalise a lemma of Ihara for GL 2 . Following Wiles' method we show that this conjecture implies that our automorphy lifting theorem could be extended to cover lifts that are not minimally ramified.

Automorphic forms and galois representations: Volume 1

In the Langlands program over number fields, automorphic representations and Galois representations are placed into correspondence, using the cohomology of Shimura varieties as an intermediary. Over a function field, the appropriate intermediary is a moduli space of shtukas. We review the shtukas and introduce their local analogues, which play a similar role in the Langlands program over a p p -adic field. Along the way we construct the Fargues-Fontaine curve and discuss perfectoid spaces and diamonds. This survey may be seen as preparatory for the contribution of Fargues-Scholze.

Let p≥5 be a prime. If an irreducible component of the spectrum of the ‘big’ ordinary Hecke algebra does not have complex multiplication, under mild assumptions, we prove that the image of its mod p Galois representation contains an open subgroup of for the canonical “weight” variable T. This fact appears to be deep, as it is almost equivalent to the vanishing of the μ-invariant of the Kubota–Leopoldt p-adic L-function and the anticyclotomic Katz p-adic L-function. Another key ingredient of the proof is the anticyclotomic main conjecture proven by Rubin/Mazur–Tilouine.

We study the intimate interactions between the theory of p-adic Galois representations and the structure of pro-p Galois groups. In particular, information passes in both directions. Algebraic geometry, for instance in the guise of elliptic curves and modular forms, yields naturally occurring Galois representations, whereas on the other side, co-homological techniques and variants on class field theory tell us about the generators and relations of the pro-p Galois groups. In the case of pro-p extensions ramified at (primes above) p, this combination works together rather well to elucidate the structure of the set of Galois representations. In the case of pro-p extensions unramified at p,both sides are poorly understood, but there is the fundamental conjecture of Fontaine—Mazur claiming that such representations should have finite image (since algebraic geometry can produce no others). This has very interesting consequences for the corresponding pro-p Galois groups, possibly producing a new family of just-infinite pro-p groups.

Over the past few years the arithmetic Langlands program has found applications in two quite different problems that arise in string physics. The first of these is concerned with the fundamental problem of deriving the geometry of spacetime from the worldsheet dynamics, leading to a realization of the notion of an emergent spacetime in string theory. The second problem is concerned with the idea of using automorphic black holes as probes of spacetime. In this article both of these applications of the Langlands program are described.

The geometry. of numbers can be traced back at least to Lagrange [1773], who proved important results about quadratic forms in two variables. The proofs as well as the formulations of results were purely arithmetic. Reviewing a book of Seeber [1831B] on ternary quadratic forms, Gauß [1831] introduced for the first time geometric methods. Geometric methods were predominant in the work of Dirichlet [1850]. On the other hand Hermite [1850] and Korkine and Zolotareff [1872], [1873], [1877] gave arithmetic proofs for their results on quadratic forms in more than three variables. Finally Minkowski [1891] noticed that a simple geometric argument which he used to give a new proof of a theorem of Hermite could be adapted to much more general situations. Then Minkowski [1896B], [7B], [11B] started a systematic study of geometric methods in number theory and called this new branch of number theory geometry of numbers. Many results and most concepts of modern geometry of numbers have their origin in the work of Minkowski. After Minkowski many eminent mathematicians made contributions to this field. In order to avoid controversies I will not mention any of them. Geometry of numbers is closely related to other branches of number theory such as algebraic number theory and Diophantine approximation. A flourishing offspring is discrete geometry, developed mainly by Fejes Tóth and his school.

The prime numbers play a central role in the theory of numbers. We show that Fermat’s theorem on primes may be proved using symmetry properties of Ising-spin configurations; and that similarly this may be extended to certain composite numbers. Our method of proof suggests a ’’physical’’ interpretation of the primes.

In the 2012–13 academic year, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, hosted programs in Commutative Algebra (Fall 2012 and Spring 2013) and Noncommutative Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory (Spring 2013). There have been many significant developments in these fields in recent years; what is more, the boundary between them has become increasingly blurred. This was apparent during the MSRI program, where there were a number of joint seminars on subjects of common interest: birational geometry, D-modules, invariant theory, matrix factorizations, noncommutative resolutions, singularity categories, support varieties, and tilting theory, to name a few. These volumes reflect the lively interaction between the subjects witnessed at MSRI. The Introductory Workshops and Connections for Women Workshops for the two programs included lecture series by experts in the field. The volumes include a number of survey articles based on these lectures, along with expository articles and research papers by participants of the programs. Volume 2 focuses on the most recent research.

<p>The goal of this thesis is to study non-commutative deformation rings of representations of algebras. The main motivation is to provide a generalization of the deformation theory over commutative local rings studied by B. Mazur, M. Schlessinger and others. The latter deformation theory has played an important role in number theory, and in particular in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.</p> <p>The thesis is divided into two parts.</p> <p>In the first part, <em>A</em> is an arbitrary λ-algebra for a complete local commutative Noetherian ring λ with residue field <em>k</em>. A category Ĉ is defined whose objects are complete local λ-algebras <em>R</em> with residue field <em>k</em> such that <em>R</em> is a quotient ring of a power series algebra over λ in finitely many non-commuting variables. If <em>V</em> is a finite dimensional <em>k</em>-vector space that is also a left <em>A</em>-module and that satisfies a natural finiteness condition, it is proved that <em>V</em> has a so-called versal deformation ring <em>R(A,V)</em>. More precisely, <em>R(A,V)</em> is an object in Ĉ such that the isomorphism class of every lift of <em>V</em> over an object <em>R</em> in Ĉ arises from a morphism α : <em>R(A,V)</em>→ <em>R</em> in Ĉ and α is unique if <em>R</em> is the ring of dual numbers <em>k</em>[ϵ].</p> <p>In the second part, two particular examples of λ, <em>A</em> and <em>V</em> are studied and the versal deformation ring <em>R(A,V)</em> is determined in each of these cases. In the first example, λ=<em>k</em>, <em>A</em> is a series of non-commutative <em>k</em>-algebras depending on a parameter <em>r≥2</em>, and <em>V</em> is a particular quotient module of <em>A</em>; it is shown that <em>R(A,V)</em> is isomorphic to <em>A</em>. The second example builds on the first example when <em>r=2</em> and uses that, if additionally the characteristic of <em>k</em> is 2, then <em>A</em> is isomorphic to the group ring <em>k[D<sub>8</sub>]</em> of a dihedral group <em>D<sub>8</sub></em> of order 8.</p> <p>It is shown that if <em>k</em> is perfect and <em>W</em> is the ring of infinite Witt vectors over <em>k</em>, then <em>R(W[D<sub>8</sub>],V)</em> is isomorphic to <em>W[D<sub>8</sub>]</em>.</p>
