The history of the British Dental Association Benevolent Fund: the post-war period - Part 4.
The final of these four papers charting the history of the British Dental Association Benevolent Fund ('the Charity') will examine the period from 1948 to the present, with attention given to the wider socio-economic environment. The Charity over this period has proved to be remarkably resilient and able to adapt structurally and technically to various challenges in the post-war period. Possible futures for the Charity will be examined and this paper will argue that the history of the Benevolent Fund suggests the way for dentistry in the UK to return to being a stable profession: a return to full self-regulation.

The primary objective of this study is to explore the application of Islamic accounting principles within the context of the nahusanamang custom. Employing qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach, the research delves into the interpretation of Islamic accounting concepts within nahusanamang. Through this investigation, several key elements emerge, shedding light on the significance of nahusanamang within Islamic accounting frameworks. Nahusanamang, within the purview of Islamic accounting, encompasses various facets including assets, liabilities, temporary shirkah funds, equity, receipts and expenses (encompassing profits and losses), cash flow, zakat funds, and benevolent funds. These interpretations are deeply rooted in the traditions prevalent within the community, illustrating the integration of Sharia principles into the accounting practices associated with nahusanamang. The traditional understanding of nahusanamang within Islamic accounting underscores its broader role beyond mere financial transactions. It embodies religious values, fostering familial and social bonds while alleviating the burdens of individuals with pressing needs, known as sahibul hajat. This research underscores the significance of incorporating Islamic principles into accounting practices, emphasizing the broader societal and ethical dimensions inherent in financial transactions. By contextualizing nahusanamang within Islamic accounting frameworks, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how religious values intersect with financial management practices within specific cultural contexts. Ultimately, the findings of this study provide valuable insights for practitioners and scholars alike, highlighting the importance of aligning accounting practices with religious and cultural values to ensure ethical and socially responsible financial management within diverse communities.

Diaspora-led philanthropy is a new and less understood phenomenon in the debate on the diaspora-development nexus. This chapter critically interrogates the logic underpinning the assumption of clear-cut, assured relationships between diasporas and their countries of origin through a case study of the South African diaspora in Ontario. It chronicles the convoluted conditions involved in the “making” and “unmaking” of the South African diaspora that have profoundly affected the creation and longevity of diaspora-based groups and, in turn, determined the philanthropic practices of groups and individuals. Through this analysis, a case is advanced for a deeper, more nuanced, engagement with the unacknowledged background and powerful social, political and economic relationships involved in the diaspora-development bond. The chapter shows how fraught relations with South Africa and other South Africans have divided the location and beneficiaries of charitable giving, with some of the largest, most conspicuous donations by the wealthiest South African immigrants being directed to Canadian institutions and social causes. The dominant character of charitable work in South Africa therefore tends to reproduce the traditional format of philanthropy in which key dedicated individuals, rather than social groups, are the main drivers of altruism and social giving.

Promoting Mental Well-being in Rugby League Communities
Rugby League Cares (RLC) was created in 2012 to bring together the UK rugby league family of charities—the Rugby League Foundation, Benevolent Fund and Heritage Trust—and acts as umbrella and coordinator for a network of local club-based Foundations. Its mission is to enhance and enrich people’s lives through the power and positive influence of rugby league—working with local communities to help people lead a more positive and healthy life through the delivery of high-quality sports, educational, employment, heritage and health-based activities. In recognition of the fact that men are significantly less likely to seek support for mental health problems, or to receive a diagnosis of stress, anxiety or depression (particularly in more deprived communities associated with rugby league), RLC and local Foundations, with financial support from Sport Relief, established a Mental Well-being Programme to: Create and deliver projects for ‘at-risk’ groups to improve mental well-being Raise awareness of the services available and promote pathways for those in need Build relationships between Foundations, their local communities and partners—particularly local NHS and expert charities Increase capacity within clubs, giving staff more confidence and knowledge about mental health issues Generate new knowledge of how sport and clubs can reach and positively influence local communities, which could be shared throughout rugby league and more widely
