Adaptive beamforming for binary phase shift keying communication systems
In present days, there has been a race among the communication systems in different schemes and generations. Gradually the transmission rate of data is increasing tremendously and breaking the previous generation's record. Now people are thinking of transmitting data beyond imagination. Using multiple antennas both at transmitter and receiver side, MIMO wireless technology efficiently provides very high spectral efficiency, boost the data transmission rate, enhance link reliability and improve system coverage. While transmitting data over mobile radio channels at high bit rates, the impulse response of the channel can be extended over a lot of symbol periods, leading fading and Inter-symbol interference (lSI). Equalizers are used to minimize Fading and interference effects. The analysis of the paper is studying the performance of Minimum mean square error method in terms of BER for MIMO (2×2) and (3×3) wireless channels. Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation technique was used in Rayleigh flat fading channel. Simulating in MATLAB results show that Minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers is good for noise free channel and is successful in removing ISI. Successive interference method with optimal ordering outperforms the MMSE however a few problems arise because of iterative nature of the algorithm.

Filtered Multitone Modulation Underwater Acoustic Communications Using Low-Complexity Channel-Estimation-Based MMSE Turbo Equalization
Filtered multitone (FMT) modulation divides the communication band into several subbands to shorten the span of symbols affected by multipath in underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. However, there is still intersymbol interference (ISI) in each subband of FMT modulation degrading communication performance. Therefore, ISI suppression techniques must be applied to FMT modulation UWA communications. The suppression performance of traditional adaptive equalization methods often exploited in FMT modulation UWA communications is limited when the effect of ISI spans tens of symbols or large constellation sizes are used. Turbo equalization consisting of adaptive equalization and channel decoding can improve equalization performance through information exchanging and iterative processes. To overcome the shortcoming of traditional minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization and effectively suppress the ISI with relatively low computation complexity, an FMT modulation UWA communication using low-complexity channel-estimation-based (CE-based) MMSE turbo equalization is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, turbo equalization is first exploited to suppress the ISI in FMT modulation UWA communications, and the equalizer coefficients of turbo equalization are adjusted using the low-complexity CE-based MMSE algorithm. The proposed method is analyzed in theory and verified by simulation analysis and real data collected in the experiment carried out in a pool with multipath propagation. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better communication performance with a higher bit rate than the FMT modulation UWA communication using traditional MMSE adaptive equalization.

Visible light communication (VLC) has been proposed as a promising way for next generation wireless communication networks to mitigate the scarcity of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum, and has consequently attracted much attention. This paper introduces a single-input single-output (SISO) VLC system under the joint effects of statistical random channel and signal-dependent shot noise (SDSN). Moreover, it estimates the channel of the considered system using maximum likelihood (ML), least square (LS), linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE), maximum posteriori probability (MAP) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimators. Furthermore, a Bayesian Cramér-Rao lower bound (BCRLB) is derived for the proposed system and it is compared to the mean square error (MSE) of the proposed estimators. The problem of unknown SDSN factor, <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\zeta ^{2}$</tex-math></inline-formula> , at the receiver side is discussed and two solutions are investigated. The receiver of a VLC system under SDSN and random channel gain <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$h$</tex-math></inline-formula> is designed and its BER is studied. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation results of the proposed estimators, which show the dramatic effect of the SDSN on the considered system, are provided. In particular, the presence of noise variance, as well as the SDSN factor, causes an increase in the MSE of the system, while increasing the power reinforces the system performance.

We generalize the multiuser (CDMA spread spectrum) communication systems to the fading environments. We first extend Verdu's (1986) conventional optimum receiver to Rayleigh-fading environments and then evaluate its performance. Having no knowledge of the received power at the receiving end, we therefore need an estimator to efficiently estimate the received signal strength of each user in fading environments. A linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) unbiased estimator is proposed to attain this goal. By using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) Bayesian estimation, we further propose the LMMSE bit estimator for efficient demodulation. Its performance is close to the optimum multiuser receiver but with a much simpler polynomial complexity. To further reduce the complexity, we extend the LMMSE estimator to the sequential LMMSE estimator. In sequential estimation, we do not need to implement the matched filter banks and to perform the matrix inversion when estimating. In addition, it converges after approximately 2k iterations, where k is the number of users. With this fast convergence property and the simple structure, the sequential LMMSE estimator provides an attractive alternative to the implementation of a multiuser system.

The paper proposes a receiver scheme for multicarrier-CDMA (MC-CDMA) that while not making use of the well known technique of guard interval is able to combat the effects of intersymbol as well as intercarrier interference (ISI, ICI). This is achieved by means of an adaptive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) fractionally spaced (FS) decision feedback equaliser (DFE) receiver scheme performing joint detection (JD). The forward section of the equaliser is designed to operate at a fractional rate, while the feedback section is symbol spaced. The analysis and design of the MIMO FS/DFE scheme is made for the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. In this context, the steady state behaviour is analysed and the receivers performance are computed by means of the residual mean square error (MSE). Using Gaussian approximation an expression of the bit error rate (BER) for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation is derived for both the down link (DL) and up link (UL) communication scenarios.

In orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, it is generally assumed that the channel response is static in an OFDM symbol period. However, the assumption does not hold in high-mobility environments. As a result, intercarrier interference (ICI) is induced and the system performance is degraded. A simple remedy for this problem is the application of the zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizers. Unfortunately, the direct ZF method requires the inversion of an NxN ICI matrix, where N is the number of subcarriers. When N is large, the computational complexity can become prohibitively high. As for the direct MMSE method, in addition to an NxN matrix inverse, it requires an extra NxN matrix multiplication, making the required computational complexity higher compared to the direct ZF method. In this dissertation, we first propose a low-complexity ZF method to solve the problem in single-input-single-output (SISO) OFDM systems. The main idea is to explore the special structure inherent in the ICI matrix and to apply Newton's iteration for matrix inversion. With our formulation, fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) can be used in the iterative process, reducing the complexity from O(N^3) to O(Nlog_2 N) . Also, the required number of the iteration is typically one or two. We also analyze the convergence behavior of the proposed method and derive the theoretical output signal-to-interference-noise-ratio (SINR). For the MMSE method, we first reformulate the MMSE solution in a way that the extra matrix multiplication can be avoided. Similar to the ZF method, we then exploit the structure of the ICI matrix and apply Newton's iteration to reduce the complexity of the matrix inversion. For a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM system, the required complexity of the ZF and MMSE methods becomes more intractable. We then manage to extend the proposed ZF and MMSE methods for SISO-OFDM systems to MIMO-OFDM systems. It turns out that the computational complexity can be reduced even more significantly. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed methods is almost as good as that of the direct ZF and MMSE methods, while the required computational complexity is reduced dramatically. Finally, we explore the application of the proposed methods in mobility-induced ICI mitigation for OFDM multiple access (OFDMA) systems, and in carrier frequency offset (CFO) induced ICI mitigation for OFDMA uplink systems. As that in OFDM systems, the proposed methods can reduce the required computational complexity, effectively.

Enhanced genetic algorithms (GA) applied in space-time block coded (STBC) multiuser detection (MUD) systems in Rayleigh flat-fading channels are reported in this paper. Firstly, an improved objective function, which is designed to help speed up the search for the optimal solution, is introduced. Secondly, a decorrelating detector (DD) and a minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector have been added to the GA STBC MUD receiver to create the seed chromosome in the initial population. This operation has improved the receiver performance further because some signal information has been intentionally embedded in the initial population. Simulation results show that the receiver employing the improved objective function and the DD or MMSE detector can converge faster with the same bit error rate (BER) performance than the receiver with the initial population chosen randomly. The total signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement contributed by these two modifications can reach 4 dB. Hence the proposed GA receiver is a promising solution of the STBC MUD problem.
Read moreEfficient detection technique in a MIMO system using the received signal compensation algorithm
In this article, we address the problem of improving the performance of linear detection techniques to satisfy the growing demand for bandwidth for multiuser multimedia applications. Specifically, the technical performance of linear detection in spatial multiplexing should be improved, followed by the reception of the downlink signal. This article proposes a coupling of the algorithm for power compensation of received signals between zero forcing (ZF) and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) associated with the technique of successive interference cancellation (SIC) and a sorting system (Sort) without increasing complexity. Thus, we propose the assumptions of coupling and performance evaluation. The results were obtained for three configurations of multiple input multiple output antennas with binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation via MATLAB 2020 software. The results showed that the use of ZF-SIC-Sort or MMSE-SIC-Sort in combination with the algorithm for compensating for the power of the received signals was a better compromise between the bit error rate (BER) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The proposed method yields better performance for an SNR of approximately 0 dB and a BER ; this approach has potential for future use in new generation networks.
Read moreEnhanced lattice reduction algorithm for detection and precoding of MIMO systems with perfect CSI
Multi input multi output (MIMO) system with the multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver is the emerging technology in the modern wireless system. MIMO systems are well adopted due to its high spectral efficiency and high data rates. For the detection of MIMO systems, a powerful technique called Lattice Reduction (LR) algorithm are used to obtain the better orthogonality in the channel matrices and is aided with the linear and low complexity detectors such as Zero forcing(ZF) and Minimum mean square error (MMSE) for the reduction in complexity. In this paper we propose a new algorithm called Enhanced lattice reduction algorithm to improve the error performance for the linear detectors with the lesser complexity and also it is aided with the non linear precoding called Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) in the presence of channel state information (CSI). Lattice reduction aided with THP improves the performance linearly. BER performance of the proposed algorithm is determined and it is compared with the other LR aided algorithms in the literature.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can achieve high data-rate and high capacity transmission. In MIMO systems, the scheme that weight substreams based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion at the transmitter using feedback channel state information (CSI) achieves good performance (denoted hereafter as MMSE precoder). However, if the optimum number of substreams is not selected based on CSI and methods for reducing the performance degradation due to feedback delay is not used, MMSE precoder cannot achieve the full performance possible. In this paper, we propose an MMSE precoder with mode selection for MIMO systems, which selects both the number of substreams and the modulation scheme for each substream to minimize the average BER at a fixed rate. We evaluate the BER of the proposed MMSE precoder with two methods for reducing performance degradation due to feedback delay, channel prediction and receive weight robust to feedback delay. We also evaluate the BER of the proposed MMSE precoder with the method that combines channel prediction with receive weight robust to feedback delay. Simulation results show that the BER of the proposed MMSE precoder is improved compared to that of the conventional MMSE precoder using the fixed number of substreams. We also show that the method that combines channel prediction with receive weight robust to feedback delay can achieve good BER even when the large feedback delay exists.
Read moreA novel tunable-complexity turbo-soft detector for high-throughput HDSL applications over ISI channels with crosstalk
We present a novel iterative (turbo) receiver with tunable complexity for reliable detection of (uncoded) payload data transmitted over long intersymbol interference (ISI) channels affected by crosstalk, as those typically encountered in emerging HDSL2 services standardized by ANSI T1.418 recommendation. The proposed receiver combines in an original way "minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation principle," "turbo-processing principle" and "crosstalk-prediction principle" for achieving both suboptimal maximum a posteriori probability channel equalization and reliable soft-mitigation of ISI tail plus crosstalk. More in detail, according to the turbo-processing principle, at each iteration suitable extrinsic information is extracted from the equalizing and interference-canceling modules and used as "a priori information" for the next iteration. Several simulation results on typical HDSL-like test-loops confirm the superiority of the proposed turbo-detector (TD) over current solutions based on conventional MMSE decision-feedback equalizers and precoders (such as the Tomlinson-Harashima precoder). The numerical tests also point out that performance of the presented TD on typical high bit-rate digital subscriber lines (HDSL) is not limited by error-floor phenomena, even at error-probabilities below 10/sup -7/.
Read moreTheoretical Derivation of Minimum Mean Square Error of RBF Based Equalizer
In this paper, the minimum mean square error (MSE) convergence of the RBF equalizer is evaluated and compared with the linear equalizer based on the theoretical minimum MSE. The basic idea of comparing these two equalizers comes from the fact that the relationship between the hidden and output layers in the RBF equalizer is also linear. As extensive studies of this research, various channel models are selected, which include linearly separable channel, slightly distorted channel, and severely distorted channel models. The theoretical minimum MSE for both RBF and linear equalizers were computed, compared and the sensitivity of minimum MSE due to RBF center spreads was analyzed.

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), Fourier Transform (FT) is used as a modulation technique. To avoid inter-symbol interference (ISI) in OFDM by a time dispersive channel, a cyclic prefix (CP) is used which also reduces its spectral efficiency. wavelet packet transform (WPT) as a modulation scheme has been proposed for wireless communication. In this paper, WPT based OFDM is presented and proposed using minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. Equalization is a major factor in wavelets. MMSE is proposed for wavelet based OFDM (WOFDM) based on WPT and compared with zero forcing equalizer (ZFE). The performance is measured for arbitrary magnitude finite impulse response (FIR) channels in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and impulse noise. Simulation results show a clear improvement in bit error rate (BER) for MMSE over ZFE equalization technique in the presence of noise.

An introduction of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) to distributed antenna-based small-cell networks is considered a promising approach toward 5G mobile networks to enhance the sum throughput. However, the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the channel frequency-selectivity, the inter-antenna interference (IAI), and the inter-user interference (IUI) degrade the MU-MIMO downlink throughput. This paper proposes two joint transmit-and-receive (Tx/Rx) filtering schemes (called BD-SVD and MMSE-SVD) for MU-MIMO downlinks using single-carrier (SC) transmission and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. In BD-SVD, IUI is removed by block diagonalization (BD) at the transmitter side, and then, the equivalent channel after BD is transformed into IAI-free eigenmodes using singular value decomposition (SVD). On the other hand, in MMSE-SVD, BD is not used and the channel is directly transformed into eigenmodes. IUI and IAI are suppressed by a minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based precoding at the transmitter assuming that each receiver does eigenmode reception. Furthermore, in the case of SC downlink, ISI is suppressed by applying MMSE-based Tx power allocation (PA) and Rx frequency-domain equalization (FDE) to each eigenmode. Numerical results show that BD-SVD and MMSE-SVD achieve a higher sum throughput than conventional MMSE precoding.
Read moreEqualizers for multi-user detection in code division multiple access mobile radio systems
In code division multiple access (CDMA) systems transmitting over time-varying multipath channels, both intersymbol interference (ISI) and multiple access interference (MAI) arise. The conventional suboptimum receiver consisting of a bank of matched filters is often inefficient because interference is treated as noise. The optimum multi-user detector is too complex to be implemented at present. Four suboptimum detection techniques based on zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization with and without decision feedback (DF) are presented and compared. They combat both ISI and MAI. The computational complexity of all four equalizers is essentially the same and they are independent of the size of the data symbol alphabet. It is shown that all four equalizers considerably outperform the conventional receiver. The MMSE equalizers are superior to the corresponding ZF equalizers. Furthermore, the equalizers with DF perform better than the corresponding equalizers without DF. An algorithm termed channel sorting is introduced to reduce the impairing effect of error propagation on the equalizers with DF. >
