Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) tools have been available to the architect in practically useful form for a close to a century. It has evolved from being a complicated simulation tool available to mainframe computers and used exclusively by experts working on special “CAAD projects” to being accessible to any interested individual on a personal computer. CAAD plays a vital role on the profession and academia of architecture in recent years. The aim of this study is to provide a reflective perspective of the current architecture education on CAAD in the Department of Architecture in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). It compares the method of architecture design education in the department of architecture in KNUST to other methods architecture design education of other universities. It examines the various benefits of incorporating CAAD into the curriculum and looks at the various shortfalls limiting the full exploitation of CAAD into the design curriculum of architecture education also the role CAAD the design process from conceptual to final product is examined. Survey questionnaires were distributed to students in the Department of Architecture and CAAD tutors interviewed to ascertain the level of impact of CAAD in the department. It was realized that the level of integration of CAAD with the design studio is low and transition from traditional drafting methods to the modern methods of using computers in design is not clearly established, thus recommendations were made to rectify the situation.

With the development of China's national economy and the improvement of science and technology, the design level of domestic architectural engineering has been continuously improved, especially the combination of computer-aided architectural design and BIM technology, which has been highly valued by all sectors of society. The application of BIM technology in computer aided architectural design provides an important auxiliary role for the innovation and development of the construction industry, and is another revolution in architectural design. With the popularization of Internet information technology, digital technology has become an important force to promote economic development. The birth of BIM technology provides a new impetus for the development of the construction industry. Compared with the traditional design mode, computer-aided architectural design has the advantages of more efficient, more convenient and more accurate. This paper makes a brief analysis of BIM Technology and its application advantages, expounds the application function of BIM Technology in computer-aided architectural design, aiming to improve the application level of BIM | technology and promote the effect of computer-aided architectural design.

The presence of both visible and hidden digital resources in daily life is overwhelming and their presence continues to grow exponentially. It is surprising how little the impact of this evolution is questioned, especially in education. Reflecting on past experiences of this subject to learn for the future seems rarely to be done, and the sheer fact that a digital method exists is often seen as sufficient justification for its use. Are these the perceptions of serious misgivings or isolated views that circulate in the educational world and beyond? We would suggest that the eCAADe (Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe) and its conferences provide the ideal forum to provide answers in this debate. For the first conference in what is to be the next quarter century of the existence of eCAADe, a theme was chosen that could easily include all aspects of this debate: ARCHITECTURE ‘in computro’ , Integrating methods and techniques It seems a bit vulgar to use a dog-Latin phrase ‘in computro’ for such a serious matter but at least it now has a place between ‘in vivo’ and ‘in vitro’. For more than 25 years CAAD has been available, and has been more and more successfully used in research and commercial architectural practice. In education, which by definition should prepare students for the future, the constantly evolving CAAD metaphor is provoking a challenge to cope with the ever expanding scope of related topics. It is not surprising that this has led to differing opinions as to how CAAD should be taught. Questions such as how advanced research results can be incorporated in teaching, or if the Internet is provoking self-education by students, are in striking contrast with the more fundamental issues such as the discussion on analogue versus digital design methods. Is CAAD a part of design teaching or is it its logical successor in a global E-topia? Although the E of education is a prominent factor in the ‘raison d’être’ of the organisation, the papers presented at this conference illustrate that eCAADe is open to all other relevant contributions in the area of computer-aided architectural design. It will be a fortunate coincidence that this exchange of knowledge and opinions on such state-of-the-art subjects, will be hosted by the The Higher Institute of Architectural Sciences, Henry van de Velde, located in the historical buildings of the Royal Academy of Fine Art established since the founding of the academy in 1662.

Robots are gaining popularity in architecture. Snøhetta has recently purchased their own industrial robot, becoming one of the first architectural offices to adopt robot technology. As more and more architects are exposed to robotic fabrication, the need for easy interoperability, integration into architectural design tools and general accessibility will increase. Architects are discovering that industrial robots are much more than kinematic machines for stacking bricks, welding or milling - they are highly multifunctional and can be used for a huge variety of tasks. However, industry standard software does not provide easy solutions for allowing direct robot control right from CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) systems. In this paper we will discuss existing methods of programming industrial robots, published architectural results (Gramazio and Kohler 2008) and the design of a new user interface that allows intuitive control of parametric designs and customized robotic mass production, by integrating CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) functions into CAAD.

The subject of this paper is the research that aims at efficiency improvement of acquisition of 3D building models from digital images for Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). The results do not only apply to CAAD, but to all applications where polyhedral objects are involved. The research is concentrated on the integration of a priori geometric object information in the modeling process. Parallelism and perpendicularity are examples of the a priori information to be used. This information leads to geometric constraints in the mathematical model. This model can be formulated using condition equations with observations only. The advantage is that the adjustment does not include object parameters and the geometric constraints can be incorporated in the model sequentially. As with the use of observation equations statistical testing can be applied to verify the constraints. For the initial values of orientation parameters of the images we use a direct solution based on a priori object information as well. For this method only two sets of (coplanar) parallel lines in object space are required. The paper concentrates on the mathematical model with image lines as the main type of observations. Advantages as well as disadvantages of a mathematical model with only condition equations are discussed. The parametrization of the object model plays a major role in this discussion.

The computing resources of an organization or project team were often spread across many different platforms and in different locations. Recently, there has been a growing interest in distributed CAAD (Computer-Aided Architectural Design) integration due to the needs of direct collaboration among project participants. The potential for the integration of information is expected to have a tremendous impact on architecture and the construction industry. The aim of this research is to provide a new paradigm for a CAAD system by combining research on integrated CAAD applications with recent collaboration technologies. To accomplish this research objective, the proposed system has been designed and a prototype implemented to produce enough guidelines to foster interest in the development of future CAAD systems on the Internet. To this end, two different scopes of implementation are evaluated: first, global architecture and the functionality of a distributed CAAD system; and, second, the association of an architectural application to the system.

Architectural Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a basic course for architectural engineering majors in vocational colleges. The integration of competition into teaching will not only help stimulate the students’ enthusiasm, but also help them improve their professional skills. However, there are still some problems in the teaching of Architectural CAD. Therefore, teachers must continuously optimize the integration of competition content into Architectural CAD classes through various strategies, so as to give full play to the value of competition content in classes. We explored and analyzed the problems in the integration of competition content into Architectural CAD classes, and proposed specific strategies, in hopes of improving the quality of Architectural CAD teaching.

Over the past years, computational methods based on deep learning—that is, machine learning with multilayered neural networks—have become state-of-the-art in main research areas in computer-aided architectural design (CAAD). To understand current trends of CAAD with deep learning, to situate them in a broader historical context, and to identify future research challenges, this article presents a systematic review of publications that apply neural networks to CAAD problems. Research papers employing neural networks were collected, in particular, from CumInCad a major open-access repository of the CAAD community and categorized into different types of research problems. Upon analyzing the distribution of the papers in these categories, namely, the composition of research subjects, data types, and neural network models, this article suggests and discusses several historical and technical trends. Moreover, it identifies that the publications analyzed typically provide limited access to important research components used as part of their deep learning methods. The article points out the importance of sharing training experiments and data, of describing the dataset, dataset parameters, dataset samples, model, learning parameters, and learning results to support reproducibility. It proposes a guideline that aims at increasing the quality and availability of CAAD research with machine learning.

This paper investigates new design methods, showing the experimental use of new digital tools, CNC-techniques and technologies so as to expand the definition of contemporary architecture.This investigation of new technologies extends the traditional practice of architectural design to include issues of design, multimedia, programming, control systems and fabrication by using computer controlled machines.The main teaching and research focus of the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture (MAS), Specialization in Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), Prof. Dr. Ludger Hovestadt, is the computer based architectural design and its automated production.The aim of our research and teaching project is to achieve a close connection between design and production by embedding the "digital chain" in the whole process.The digital chain is a design and production sequence with no analogue steps; the process offers high flexibility in terms of design and production.The use of new digital tools in architecture extends the profession beyond traditional design.

The introduction of physically-based description and simulation methods to issues of building performance (i.e., acoustic, visual, and air quality; thermal comfort, cost, and long-term system integrity) began in the early 1960s as one of the first examples of computer-aided design in architecture. Since that time, the development of commercially-available computer-aided design systems has largely been oriented towards the visualization and representation of the geometry of buildings, while the development of building performance applications has been concerned with approaches to mathematical and physics-based modeling for predictive purposes.

Oracles, draughtsmen, and agents: the nature of knowledge and creativity in design and the role of IT

The paper describes a new procedure of design management and the results of its application to architectural design in an exercise developed in a didactic context. The procedure requires the participation of all “actors” (i.e. designers, experts, clients, users, etc.) involved in the design process and which contribute, directly or indirectly, to obtain the result. By generating and developing alternative design solutions, this procedure allows the exploration of a region of the performances space which is generally more vast than that explored by the traditional designer.

With the development trend of current economy and the rapid development of computer technology, intelligence is more and more widely applied in the construction industry. According to the actual situation of current society, this paper makes a brief introduction of building information model. Taking its application status at home and abroad and existing problems into consideration, as far as the development of the current field. The paper frames structure and simulates the interface with the help of computer-aided analyzing tools. Itapplies the computer intelligence factor analyzing method and gets the factors that influence the building information model are: the expected results, human intervention, promoting conditions, adoption intention, the ability to use technology and educational background variables. Then, through model testing, we got the direct link with strong degree between the expected results and adoption intention, human intervention and adoption intention, the expected results and the ability to use technology, promoting conditions and educational background variables. This paper analyzes the factors and the relations of building information model. Is has a certain economic value and practical significance. It can solve the existing problems in practical construction industry and lays a foundation for other related building software.

We present UnityRev: An open-source software package that enables a workflow designed to facilitate a real-time bi-directional and synchronous exchange of Building Information Modelling (BIM) data, by creating a direct link between a BIM authoring platform (i.e. Autodesk Revit) and a game engine (i.e. Unity 3D). Although previous works have explored the integration of BIM with game engines, the currently available tools are limited to a non-synchronous or uni-directional exchange of BIM data, and they do not address specific design issues required to make a BIM authoring platform and game engine compatible (i.e. parametric modelling). This paper describes our software which consists of a compact overview of the system, including design decisions, implementation details, and system capabilities. Two example applications are presented as concept demonstrators to -10795864108000showcase practical collaborative use-case scenarios between BIM authoring platforms and game engines which were not previously achievable without a real-time bi-directional workflow. This work will expand future Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) research, and more specifically, Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) based BIM development and integration, by providing new possibilities and bridging the gap between BIM authoring platforms and game engines. The application of the system as demonstrated in the paper for real-time lighting performance simulation contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Architectural design knowledge which may take the form of constraints and how it can be incorporated into the solid modeling process is explored and discussed. This theoretical exploration leads to an illustration of a Rinctional general purpose three-dimensional solid modeler which utilizes design knowledge as constraints upon the interactive solid modeling process. From this illustration, it is shown that the incorporation of constraints into ComputerAided Architectural Design can effectively assist in the early stages of the design process. A prototypical application is presented which provides an example in which the definition and implementation of specific design knowledge constrains or characterizes the generative and interactive behavior of user definable threedimensional entities. The basis of this work lies in the ability to create a design space, or building envelope, and to allow the interactive modeling of conceptual elements within, and constrained to, that design space, including the realistic interaction between the entities themselves.
