Berkeley Lectures on p-adic Geometry

We prove several results about moduli spaces of p-divisible groups such as Rapoport–Zink spaces. Our main goal is to prove that Rapoport–Zink spaces at infinite level carry a natural structure as a perfectoid space, and to give a description purely in terms of padic Hodge theory of these spaces. This allows us to formulate and prove duality isomorphisms between basic Rapoport–Zink spaces at infinite level in general. Moreover, we identify the image of the period morphism, reproving results of Faltings, [Fal10]. For this, we give a general classification of p-divisible groups over OC , where C is an algebraically closed complete extension of Qp, in the spirit of Riemann’s classification of complex abelian varieties. Another key ingredient is a full faithfulness result for the Dieudonne module functor for p-divisible groups over semiperfect rings (i.e. rings on which the Frobenius is surjective).

A p-adic Simpson correspondence

The concept of weights on the cohomology of algebraic varieties was initiated by fundamental ideas and work of A. Grothendieck and P. Deligne. It is deeply connected with the concept of motives and appeared first on the singular cohomology as the weights of (possibly mixed) Hodge structures and on the etale cohomology as the weights of eigenvalues of Frobenius. But weights also appear on algebraic fundamental groups and in p-adic Hodge theory, where they become only visible after applying the comparison functors of Fontaine. After rehearsing various versions of weights, we explain some more recent applications of weights, e.g. to Hasse principles and the computation of motivic cohomology, and discuss some open questions.

Judy Auerbach is Vice President, Public Policy at the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), where she is responsible for developing, leading, and managing the activities of amfAR’s Public Policy Office in Washington, D.C. These activities include advocating for sound, science-based HIV/AIDS policy and protecting the rights of people infected with HIV and those at risk of infection. Prior to coming to amfAR, Dr. Auerbach served as the Director of the Behavioral and Social Science Program and as the HIV Prevention Science Coordinator in the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During 1998, while on a detail from the OAR, Dr. Auerbach served as Assistant Director for Social and Behavioral Sciences in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Prior to going to the NIH, Dr. Auerbach was a Senior Program Office at the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences, where she was Study Director for the Committee on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues in AIDS Research. Dr. Auerbach began her policy work in Washington in 1988 as an AAAS Congressional Science Fellow, sponsored by the Society for Research in Child Development, when she worked on child, family, and health policy issues in the office of Representative Pat Schroeder. From 1989 to 1990, she served as Director of the Institute for the Study of Women and Men at the University of Southern California. She then returned to Washington and served as Associate Director for Government Affairs at the Consortium of Social Science Associations. Dr. Auerbach received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1986, and taught sociology at Widener University and the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to a number of articles and book chapters, she is the author of the book, In the Business of Child Care: Employer Initiatives and Working Women (Praeger, 1988).

We show that a system of r quadratic forms over a 𝔭-adic field in at least 4r+1 variables will have a non-trivial zero as soon as the cardinality of the residue field is large enough. In contrast, the Ax–Kochen theorem [J. Ax and S. Kochen, Diophantine problems over local fields. I, Amer. J. Math. 87 (1965), 605–630] requires the characteristic to be large in terms of the degree of the field over ℚp. The proofs use a 𝔭-adic minimization technique, together with counting arguments over the residue class field, based on considerations from algebraic geometry.

The excellent article by Peter M. Vitousek et al . ([25 July, p. 495][1]) states: “The human population is concentrated near coasts—about 60% within 100 km [kilometers]… .” This assertion comes from a recent World Resources Institute report ([1][2], p. 254): “An estimated 60 percent of the global population lives within roughly 100 kilometers of the shore.” This statement comes from a 1990 book ([2][3], p. 7): “Probably 60 percent of humanity, or nearly 3 billion people, live on or within 100 km of a sea coast.” The author of the latter book, Don Hinrichsen, an environmental journalist, informed one of us (J.E.C.) ([3][4]) that this statement was his “own assessment based on extensive back-of-the-envelope estimates using the best available data at the time.” More recently, Hinrichsen reported ([4][5], p. 39): “Nearly two-thirds of the world's people make their homes within 150 kilometers of the shore.” To our knowledge, the first public digital map of the world's human population appeared in 1995 ([5][6]). The data are freely available on the World Wide Web ([6][7]). These data make it possible to obtain more precise estimates of coastal populations as of 1994. As part of larger research programs, two groups with interests in the interactions between the earth sciences and the social sciences have independently co-registered the global digital population map on digital maps of coastlines. Using the digital World Vector Shoreline ([7][8]), two of us (C.S. and J.E.C.) estimate that approximately 37% (2.07 billion) of the 1994 population (5.62 billion) lived within 100 km of a coastline, and approximately 44% (2.45 billion) within 150 km of a coastline. These percentages are lower than those of Hinrichsen. In addition, C.S. and J.E.C. estimate that 49% of the 1994 population lived within 200 km of a coastline, and 66% within 400 km. Using the boundaries (compounded from various sources) provided by the gridded population of the world ([6][7]) and a different algorithm for computing distance to coastline, three of us (A.M., J.G., and J.S.) estimate that 37% lived within 100 km of a coastline. This estimate agrees with that of C.S. and J.E.C. Both groups anticipate that these estimates could be refined by the use of better data and methods. While our estimates of coastal population size are considerably smaller than Hinrichsen's, we agree that very large numbers of people affect and are affected by coastal zones. 1. The distinguished historian of higher education Sheldon Rothblatt, author of such fine books as The Modern University and Its Discontents: The Fate of Newman's Legacies in Britain and America (Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, 1997) and Education's Abiding Moral Dilemma: Merit and Worth in the Cross-Atlantic Democracies, 1800-2006 (Oxford, England: Symposium Books, 2007), has recently published this edited volume on Clark Kerr and his times. Kerr was perhaps the most famous American academic leader of the 20th century due to his role as author of the California Master Plan for Higher Education. This plan coordinated student admissions for the University of California, the California State University, and the state's community colleges, promising a place in one of the three systems to every state resident who wanted to engage in postsecondary studies. Kerr also was the author of very influential writings, including The Uses of the University (1963/rpt., Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2001), a work in which he offered a poignant view of the problems facing this increasingly complex institution, which he called the "multiversity." In this interesting volume, which includes a foreword by former Brown University President Vartan Gregorian, Rothblatt and his co-authors reflect on Kerr's ideas and career. In particular, the volume focuses on the impact of Kerr's most notable achievement, the California Master Plan for Higher Education, on university systems in other states and countries. In Chapter 1, Rothblatt addresses Kerr's dramatic dismissal from the presidency of the UC system when Ronald Reagan became governor of California. Rothblatt notes that Kerr had a large wall display of newspaper cartoons about this episode in his home. This anecdote sets the tone for the rest of the chapter and the book, which presents Kerr as a forward-looking and courageous thinker, whose twin pursuits of quality and equality were expressed in the master plan, which "rode into the world on a wave of hope" (p. 25). In Chapter 2, Arthur Levine chronicles Kerr's adventures as chair of the Carnegie Commission and Council, a job that was offered to him, and which he accepted, within twenty-four hours of his dismissal from the UC presidency. Levine highlights Kerr's most important accomplishments in this position, including the impact that his report about affirmative action had on the Supreme Court's 1978 landmark decision in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, allowing consideration of race as a "plus" factor in the college admissions process. In Chapter 3, Patrick M. Callan examines the master plan, a solution crafted more than 50 years ago, which he thinks has contributed to today's difficulties because of its rigidity. According to Callan, California is a much bigger and far more complex state than it was in 1960, and it needs to expand and improve educational opportunities for its diverse population. Chapter 4, by David W. Breneman and Paul E. Ligenfelter, reviews the influence of the master plan on other states around the country, concluding that its direct impact was limited. While its structure was not copied by other states, however, the master plan inspired them to conduct their own strategic thinking, an activity that was also encouraged by the Carnegie Commission and Council led by Kerr. Chapter 5, by Michael Shattock, Chapter 6, by Guy Neave, and Chapter 7, by Thorsten Nybom, offer an overview of the reception of the master plan in Europe. While studied and admired, the master plan was not replicated, due to the very different circumstances and philosophies prevalent in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, and other European countries, which have modified their systems of higher education a number of times since 1960, while the master plan has remained unchanged. Truman’s up and dressed by six, eager to get to work at eight, which they do, Churchill, “woolly and verbose,” Stalin not: “Let’s divide the German fleet.” Churchill: “Weapons of war are horrible things.” “If Mr. Churchill wishes, he can sink his share,” said Uncle Joe–– (Truman tried that genial Uncle Joe only once on the Generalissimo. No go.) Back to business dividing up the globe into hemispheres of influence. Lunch. And Truman went upstairs to take a nap. When he came down, a message was waiting: “Little Boy born, as husky as his big brother.” That was code that the first atomic bomb had exploded at Alamogordo (“Fat Poplar Tree”). Uncle Joe didn’t seem to care at all. Why would he? Fuchs, his mole, [End Page 588] had been there to tell him all he needed to know. The War Is Dead! Long Live the Cold War! Stalin said in his head. And news that Churchill had gone down in his election flew from London straight and sharp as an arrow through the window to stick, quivering, in the conference table, bearing Aneurin Bevan, a wide man, and Clement Attlee, a narrow, on its shaft. Both of them were “sourpusses,” Truman wrote to Margaret, his singing daughter. At the same time, over Tokyo, leaflets dictating terms for Japan’s unconditional surrender fluttered down like early autumn leaves from a plum tree: melancholy haiku. Prime Minister Suzuki ignored what he read. He would kill it with silence, he said, leaving Truman to break the silence: Hiroshima––Boom! Nagasaki––Boom! The world war would be over. What a nap! Funny how much can happen while you sleep. Goodbyes Their thirteenth session was the last. Poland had been sliced up, and the rest occupied by the Soviets were theirs, for keeps de facto, for forty-four years [End Page 589] before their leases ran out. The Big Three parted.
