Better Behavioral Description for Dynamic Semantic Web Services Collaboration

Semantic Web Services are the key technology providing services for the users' convenience in the semantic web environment. Many companies in various fields are researching and developing languages for constructing Semantic Web Services such as DAML-S, WSDL, X-LANG and BPEL4WS. DAML-S is a method that accesses the existing Web Service method from a semantic web environment. However, the current Semantic Web Services Discovery System does not provide sufficient processing of quality factors (performance, accessibility, availability, reliability and transaction) nor reliable and accurate service results desired by the user through a UDDi search method. The present study analyzes the disadvantages of the current web services and suggests a Semantic Web Services Discovery System based on QoS applying semantic web technologies as a solution to the problems. The suggested system provides a UDDi and DAML-S based discovery engine to allow efficient web service discovery and composition.

Main challenges to the current semantic web service technologies are exponential continuous growth in the number of services on the Internet, syntax based discovery, lack of common agreed upon semantic service standards and heterogeneity of ontologies. In this paper, a service discovery approach independent of semantic service description models is proposed to solve the challenges of the current web service discovery. The idea is to combine principles from machine learning, data mining, statistical techniques and measures of semantic relatedness to make the semantic web service discovery process more intelligent, efficient and effective. The proposed approach exploits the use of semantic as well as syntactic information present within the service description profiles. Our approach is unique in terms of its application to any web service description language and the use of Omiotis measure of semantic relatedness for service discovery. The proposed approach has been implemented on OWL-S based service descriptions profiles and is able to find semantic relationship between the services which were otherwise discarded by the OWL-MX matchmaker. Current Semantic Web Services research investigates how to dynamically discover assemble and invoke Web services. Despite many research efforts, Semantic Web Services are still not fully recognized in industry. One important reason is the dissevered description layers of syntax and semantics. In other words, semantics is only useful for a service broker to discover services whereas service requesters still need to invoke services based on syntactic descriptions. In this paper, we view semantics from another angle to reform the Web service framework completely (even for input messages and output messages during invocation) by using only RDF and Linked Open Data. We introduce Autonomous Matchmaking Web Services in which Web services are brokering themselves to notify the service registry whether they are suitable to the requesters. This framework is designated to more efficiently work for dynamically assembling services at run time in a massively distributed environment.

The Web, as we know it, is a collection of human readable pages that are virtually unintelligible to computer programs. For that reason, it has been called the “eyeball” Web. While the Web emerged as a World Wide repository of digitized information, by and large, the very same information is not available for automatic computation. In recent years two parallel efforts emerged that have the potential of overcoming this paradox: the first effort is the Semantic Web which provides the tools for the explicit markup of the content of Web pages; the second effort is the development of Web Services which results in a Web where programs act as independent agents to become the producers and consumers of information and enable automation of business transactions.In this talk I will focus on research that attempts to bridge the gap between the Web as we know it, the Semantic Web and Web services. Under this approach, I propose the vision of Web services as autonomous goal-directed agents which select other agents to interact with, and flexibly negotiate their interaction model, acting at times in client server mode, or at other times in peer to peer mode. The resulting Web services, that I call Autonomous Semantic Web services, utilize ontologies and semantically annotated Web pages to automate the fulfillment of tasks and transactions with other Web agents. In particular, Autonomous Semantic Web services use the Semantic Web to support capability based discovery and interoperation at run time. A first step towards this vision is the development of formal languages and inference mechanisms for representing and reasoning with core concepts of Web services. DAML-S (the Darpa Agent Markup Language for Services) is the first attempt to define such a language. I will give a brief overview of DAML-S and its relations with the Semantic Web and Web services. In addition, I will provide concrete examples of computational models of how DAML-S can be viewed as the first step in bridging the gap between the Semantic Web and current proposed industry standards for Web services. Web services (WS) are manually mediated with phases such as discovery, selection, composition and invocation. WS uses syntactic description available in WSDL, which are human understandable. WS discovery and selection is made through keyword matching that produces unrelated WS, which raises the problem of finding the exact WS. To overcome this issue the search can be made to produce related web services semantically for which WS should present as semantic web service (SWS). For this human understandable description should be changed into machine understandable description. In the current Web the availability of WS is more populated than SWS, which is described in OWL-S. There is a need for transformation from WS into SWS and this paper proposes a framework for conversion. The WSDL document has two types such as simple and complex. During this conversion simple type remains unchanged, because of attribute element names and complex type contains elements values that are converted into OWL-S. The conversion is implemented and evaluated. The result outperforms the similar conversion method.

The emerging concept of semantic Web services aims at more sophisticated Web Service technologies: on basis of semantic description frameworks, intelligent mechanisms are envisioned for discovery, composition, and contracting of Web services. The tutorial explains the current state of the art in semantic Web services on basis of the Web service modeling ontology WSMO and related initiatives. Commencing from the vision and arising challenges for semantic Web services, the tutorial in detail explains the specifications of recent frameworks for semantic Web services and presents the Web service execution environment WSMX as the WSMO reference implementation. The tutorial consists of three main sections that subsequently provide a complete overview of semantic Web services and the latest status of WSMO. The tutorial addresses academic as well as industrial researches and developers that are working with Web services and are interested in semantic Web services.

Web service is a technological solution for software interoperability that supports the seamless integration of diverse applications. In the vision of web service architecture, web services are described by the Web Service Description Language (WSDL), discovered through Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) and communicate by the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). Such a divination has never been fully accomplished yet. Although it was criticized that WSDL only has a syntactic definition of web services, but was not semantic, prior initiatives in semantic web services did not establish a correct methodology to resolve the problem. This paper examines the distinction and relationship between the syntactic and semantic definitions for web services that characterize different purposes in service computation. Further, this paper proposes that the semantics of web service are neutral and independent from the service interface definition, data types and platform. Such a conclusion can be a universal law in software engineering and service computing. Several use cases in the GIScience application are examined in this paper, while the formalization of geospatial services needs to be constructed by the GIScience community towards a comprehensive ontology of the conceptual definitions and relationships for geospatial computation. Advancements in semantic web services research will happen in domain science applications.

Semantic Web Service technology provides a strong support for automation software development based on Web service. By analyzing the existing description models and methods of semantic Web service, a Semantic Web Service Description Model (WSDM4S) and its formal description based on SHOIN+(D) are proposed, which attempt to offer an effective model for description, publication, discovery, composition, and execution of Web services based on semantic description. And a Semantic Web Service Description Language (WSDL4S) based on XML is designed to support the WSDM4S. Based on WSDL4S, Web Services could be packaged into basic semantic unit of semantic software development.

Description logic is used as the formal theoretical foundation of semantic web services, the paper analyzed description language of Semantic Web Services OWL-S, WSDL-S, WSML and SWSL. Give a formal definition of description about semantic web services, further Web services is interpreted with the semantic of description logic. The satisfiability and subsumption in description logic can be applied to inferring semantic web services. For further research semantic annotation of web services, relation between web services and services, reasoning problems for semantic web services, our work was important and fundamental.

An weighted ontology-based semantic similarity algorithm for web service

The Web Services technology failed to meet its promises of fully automating the communication between applications. It necessitated human intervention in the selection and invocation of the most appropriate web service. The Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) and the Web Service Modeling eXecution environment (WSMX) are two initiatives claiming to be supporting the Semantic Web Services technology, which promises the automation of the whole communication process including these two steps. The paper tested validity of the initiatives' claim by using them to develop a Semantic Web Service (SWS) for accessing the publications of the German University in Cairo (GUC). The results showed that the initiatives were able to meet the Semantic Web Services' promises and automate the selection and the invocation of the most matching Web Service.

Through providing an execution environment for semantic web services, SWSF (Semantic Web Service Framework) can facilitate automatic web service delivery, discovery, selection, invoking, composition and interoperation. However, each of those ongoing approaches does not satisfy all basic requirements of SWSF, e.g. OWL-S (Ontology Language of Web Service) does not offer the mechanism for automatic web service tasks' execution and WSMO can not describe the composition of web services in a structural way yet. So, in order to provide a fully- fledged SWSF, we present the ISCF (Integrated Service Composition Framework) which is based on the OAA (Open Agent Architecture ). We describe the technical characters and design objectives of ISCF from global and detailed view. Comparing with other SWSFs, ISCF has more extensible and autonomous distributed architecture, and has more complete and effective web service automatization. In addition, ISCF provide some useful tools to help users design semantic web services and manage ISCF system.

Semantic Web Services (SWS) aim at the automated discovery, selection and orchestration of Web services based on comprehensive, machine-interpretable semantic descriptions. The latter are, in principle, deployed by multiple possible actors (i.e., service providers and service consumers); thus, a high level of heterogeneity between distinct SWS annotations is expected. Therefore, mediation between concurrent semantic representations of services is a key requirement to fully implement the SWS vision. In this paper, the authors argue that “semantic-level mediation” is necessary to identify semantic similarities across distinct SWS representations. The authors formalize and implement a mediation approach based on “Mediation Spaces” (MS), which enables the implicit representation of semantic similarities among distinct SWS descriptions. As a result, given a specific SWS approach and the proposed MS, a general purpose algorithm is implemented to empower SWS selection with the automatic computation of semantic similarities between a given SWS request and a set of SWS offers. A prototypical application illustrates the approach and highlights the benefits w.r.t. current mediation approaches.

A key problem of the Web service is how to evaluate the reputation of the Web service. When the multiple attributive decision-making problem bases on the incomplete attribute weight and determinate attribute value, a new grey relation analysis method is proposed to solve the problem of evaluating the reputation about semantic Web service. According to the fundamental principle of the grey relation analysis method, this method gives the calculating procedure to solve the problem of evaluating the reputation when the attribute weight of semantic Web service is incomplete. The core of the method is building and solving a single-purpose linear programming model and an optimum model of optimal membership degree. An instance is described in the paper to illustrate that the grey relation analysis method is a good method to resolve the problem of evaluating reputation when a semantic Web service has incomplete attribute weight. the simulation results of experiment shows that, compared with the traditional evaluating method which use blurring operators, the new method increases precision ratio and recall ratio of web services.

Driven by maturing Web service technologies and the wide acceptance of the service-oriented architecture paradigm, the software industrys traditional business models and strategies have begun to change: software vendors are turning into service providers. In addition, in the Web service market, a multitude of small and highly specialized providers offer modular services of almost any kind and economic value is created through the interplay of various distributed service providers that jointly contribute to form individualized and integrated solutions.
