Big Data from Management Perspective

Competency matters. Social media, customer transactions, mobile sensors, and feedback contents are all piled up with data. This might be unstructured and complex data in voluminous quantity, often called Big Data. However, if this Big Data is managed, it might bring competency for organizations. This chapter introduces the must-know concepts and materials for organizational managers who face Big Data. Through the chapter, Big Data is defined and its emergence over the time is reviewed. The four Vs model in Big Data literature and its link to a banking system is analyzed. The chapter concludes by making a managerial awareness concerning ethical issues in Big Data. This is of high priority in public sectors as data relies for every individual in the society.

Addressing the policy challenges and opportunities of “Big data”

Due to the reasons such as the rapid growth and spread of network services, mobile devices, and online users on the Internet leading to a remarkable increase in the amount of data. Almost every industry is trying to cope with this huge data. Big data phenomenon has begun to gain importance. However, it is not only very difficult to store big data and analyse them with traditional applications, but also it has challenging privacy and security problems. For this reason, this paper discusses the big data, its ecosystem, concerns on big data and presents comparative view of big data privacy and security approaches in literature in terms of infrastructure, application, and data. By grouping these applications an overall perspective of security and privacy issues in big data is suggested.

An Overview of Security and Privacy Issues in Big Data

The volume of data in the world is growing very fast and generated from verity of sources like social media, sensors airline industry or scientific data in different formats. Biggest challenge is how to infer meaningful insights from such a varietyful and big data along with concern of data storage and management of fast growing data. The size of the databases used in today’s enterprises has been growing at exponential rates day by day. Hence, industries requirement to quickly process and analyze the big data volumes for business decision making and customer insights has also grown exponentially. Data pouring from various sources may be can be structured or unstructured in nature. Structured data refers to a relatively well-organized information, which can be further inserted into traditional RDBMS. As Traditional RDBMS are efficient and easy queries by simple, straightforward search algorithms or SQL queries. In contrast to structured data, unstructured data can be considered as information, which does not, comes in a pre-defined data format, well organized data storage model, or cannot be stored well into relational tables. It is assumed to be fastest growing type of data, e.g. image, sensors data, web chats, social networking messaging data, video, documents, log files, and email data. There are many techniques and software available, which can process and provide efficient storage of unstructured data and help organization to perform analytics on unstructured data. Unstructured data does not well-organized and not stored in predefined manner e.g. logs, web chats. The variety and on ordered nature of data makes storage methods and structure makes execution a time and resource-consuming affair. Advancement into technology has open floodgates to push huge volume of unstructured type of data. Multimedia data is one of the example of unstructured big data, which spans all over the Internet. This needs high execution capability to extract useful information. Rapid processing of multimedia data such as video is important for e.g. criminal investigations, surveillance monitoring, news analysis, sports analytics domain, emotion extraction, etc. Hence, analysis of multimedia data in minimum timeframe is one of the latest research areas. Therefore, we have researched techniques for analyzing unstructured data to extract meaningful information hidden in the big data. In addition, we will describe about various techniques and software used to Manage, process unstructured big data in efficient manner, and increases the performance of complexity analysis.

The collection of user data online has seen enormous growth in recent years. Consumers have benefitted from the growth through an increase in free or heavily subsidized services, better quality offerings, and rapid innovation. At the same time, the debate about Big Data, and what it really means for consumers and competition, has grown louder. Many have focused on whether Big Data even presents an antitrust issue, and whether and how harms resulting from Big Data should be analyzed and remedied under the antitrust laws. The academic literature, however, has somewhat lagged behind the debate, and a closer inspection of existing scholarly works reveals a dearth of thorough study of the issue. Commentators generally split into two camps: one in favor of more proactive antitrust enforcement in the Big Data realm, and one opposing such intervention, considering antitrust inappropriate for regulation of Big Data. The academic case for the former has not, as yet, been fully developed, and is relatively light at present. Meanwhile, policy-focused work by academics practitioners in this arena suggests that antitrust intervention in Big Data would be premature and misguided, especially considering the myriad pro-competitive benefits offered by Big Data.In this handbook chapter, we review the scholarly work on the implications of Big Data on competition, and consider the potential role of antitrust in the regulation of Big Data. Part I provides an overview of current, scarce, academic literature specifically addressing the role of antitrust in Big Data issues. Parts II and III delve into the policy issues surrounding Big Data and whether it poses a risk to competition that warrants antitrust intervention. Part II details the ways in which Big Data may prove pro-competitive while Part III reviews and critiques the suggested potential harms to competition from Big Data. Part IV discusses the suitability of antitrust as the institutional choice for Big Data issues, and Part V concludes that, at present, antitrust is ill suited as the institutional choice. This conclusion is further born by the fact that thus far there have been no cases in the United States or Europe that have found Big Data itself to be a basis for a theory of harm on antitrust grounds for mergers or conduct cases. Further, the scholarly case for such harm has not yet been adequately established.

Social media is being employed to build support for social, economic, and political justice (Selander et al. 2016; Vaast et al. 2014) in movements such as occupy Wall Street, violence against women's movement and global sustainability movement. These movements have used social media in ways that goes beyond simple communications. As social media allows people to produce and share user generated content, they enable a certain set of affordances of these technologies (Bharati et al 2015; Bharati et al 2014). The social media affordances, available to both collective and individual actors, translate into capabilities afforded to social movements (Tufecki 2014). Research on connective action has examined the effects of digital action repertoires on interaction and engagement such as in the Tea Party and Occupy movements (Agarwal et al. 2014; Selander et al. 2016). Social media can also facilitate mobilization of movement and participation by new volunteers and oftentimes provides a transnational character by diffusing actions beyond the virtual (Van Laer and Van Aelst 2010). Conversation, an essential part of social movements, shapes “social life by altering individual and collective understandings, by creating and transforming social ties, by generating cultural materials that are then available for subsequent social interchange, and by establishing, obliterating, or shifting commitments on the part of participants&x201D; (Tilly 2002, p. 122). In a personal interaction that involves repeated organized interactions between individuals, typically, leads to shared values and trust. The role of social media technologies in furthering this conversation has to be studied and its' influence on social movement ascertained. A few scholars have started to investigate social media affordances and capabilities, especially focused on discourse, during contentious collective action. Still the research has been limited to studying mechanisms of participation, development of a sense of collective identity, creation of community, and framing of political discourse (Farrell 2012; Garrett 2006). Social media data on social movements can involve impersonal “like&x201D; and “share&x201D; to more engaged conversations. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube offer a wide communicative and discourse reach in networks with text, image, audio, and video data. This social media based big data, consisting mostly of unstructured data, comes in the form of social media posts, digital pictures and videos. The symposium will discuss how formal organizational structures and practices might be integrated with social media capabilities to reinforce and enhance social movement organizations as leaders in social change movements. It will explore the characteristics of social media discourse and assess the dynamics of social movements and, subsequent, impact on real-world protests. The symposium will also demonstrate how discourse analysis can be applied visually in order to understand communication patterns. The panel symposium will focus on theoretical and methodological challenges of social media analytics, big data and social movements. Panelists will engage the audience in an interactive discussion on: 1) Theoretical challenges: a. How and why are social movement recruitment and engagement mechanisms being impacted as a result of social media? b. How do we advance theory on social media and social movements when we are overwhelmed with social media based big data? c. What approach should we undertake if big data analysis contradicts most theories on social media and social movements? d. How do we address the issue of generalizability of social media and social movement research when data collection was limited to one social media platform, albeit involving big data? 2) Methodological challenges: a. What methodological approaches have worked in the analysis of social media, big data and social movements? b. How can discourse analysis be applied visually in order to understand communication patterns evident in social media-based big data? c. How can we employ social media analytics to investigate image and video data? d. What combinations of qualitative and quantitative methodologies be employed for big data and social media analytics in the context of social movements? e. What are the limitations of quantitative data analysis techniques, such as structural equation modeling, because of an extremely large sample size? f. What are the limitations of qualitative data analysis techniques as they become extremely labor intensive and, maybe even, impractical because of big data?

Ethical Issues in Big Data

The purpose of this research is to analyze big data structure and various objects in big data industry based on ecological perspective. Big data is rapidly emerging as a highly valuable resource to secure competitiveness of enterprise and government. Accordingly, the main issues in big data are to find ways of creating economic value and solving various problems. However big data is not systematically organized, and hard to utilize as it constantly expands to related industry such as telecommunications, finance and manufacturing. Under this circumstance, it is crucial to understand range of big data industry and to which stakeholders are related. The ecological approach is useful to understand comprehensive industry structure. Therefore this study aims at confirming big data structure and finding issues from interaction among objects. Results of this study show main framework of big data ecosystem including relationship among object elements composing of the ecosystem. This study has significance as an initial study on big data ecosystem. The results of the study can be useful guidelines to the government for making systemized big data ecosystem and the entrepreneur who is considering launching big data business.

Chapter 16 - Big Data Analytics and Social Media in Disaster Management

The thesis concerns the use of big data in Official Statistics; the aim is to bring some new experimental studies into the big data literature. In particular, the purpose is to evaluate if and how big data could be used in Official Statistics. Only a few experiments exists on the use of big data for statistical purposes; it is a challenge task and a lot of experimentation is needed to find out evidence and solutions to use big data for statistical purposes. The analysis performed in the thesis goes into two different directions: 1. combining a traditional data source with a big data source to verify the potential of the latter to replicate official results; 2. analyzing a big data source per se and then trying to combine with an Official Statistics source to identify common patterns. The thesis initially proposes a literature review of definitions of big data and experiments, in particular concerning the use of the new sources combined with traditional data sources. Then, three original studies have been performed: the first two concern mobility in Lombardy region using mobile phone data. They both refer to the same issue (mobility patterns), but they differ in the traditional data source used: Origin/Destination matrix in the first case, an integrated version of the O/D matrix in the second. The objective of these two studies is trying to put in a unique interpretative framework one traditional statistical source and one typical kind of big data in order to evaluate some informative potentialities of this approach. In particular, we wanted to check if the two sources show common patterns, to evaluate future uses of the big data source in Official Statistics. The third study shows the pilot that was carried out during the traineeship I had the opportunity to attend at Eurostat, in collaboration with the Task Force Big Data. It concerns the use of Wikipedia, free online encyclopedia, for Tourism Statistics. The aim is to evaluate the use of Wikipedia page views as a source of information for the identification of factors that drive tourism to an area and whether it is possible to predict tourism flows using these data. A final chapter proposes conclusions and future remarks on the use of big data in Official Statistics. Two of the studies (the first on mobility patterns and the one on Wikipedia) have been or are being published, in a shorter and revised version. The three experiments show some potential in the use of big data in Official Statistics. The study needs more in-depth analysis, many more experiments and considerations will be necessary before we can achieve some definitive and convincing approaches.

BackgroundThe field of “Big Health,” which encompasses the integration of big data in healthcare, has seen rapid development in recent years. As big data technologies continue to transform healthcare, understanding emerging trends and key advancements within the field is essential.MethodsWe retrieved and filtered articles and reviews related to big data analytics in health research from the Web of Science Core Collection, including SCI Expanded and SSCI, covering the period from 2009 to 2024. Bibliometric and co-citation analyses were conducted using VOSviewer and CiteSpace.ResultsA total of 13,609 papers were analyzed, including 10,702 original research and 2,907 reviews. Co-occurrence word analysis identified six key research areas: (1) the application of big data analytics in health decision-making; (2) challenges in the technological management of health and medical big data; (3) integration of machine learning with health monitoring; (4) privacy and ethical issues in health and medical big data; (5) data integration in precision medicine; and (6) the use of big data in disease management and risk assessment. The co-word burst analysis results indicate that topics such as personalized medicine, decision support, and data protection experienced significant growth between 2015 and 2020. With the advancement of big data technologies, research hotspots have gradually expanded from basic data analysis to more complex application areas, such as the digital transformation of healthcare, digital health strategies, and smart health cities.ConclusionThis study highlights the growing impact of big data analytics in healthcare, emphasizing its role in decision-making, disease management, and precision medicine. As digital transformation in healthcare advances, addressing challenges in data integration, privacy, and machine learning integration will be crucial for maximizing the potential of big data technologies in improving health outcomes.

Big data is a valuable asset for organisation as it analyses and help to understand the customers, changes within their business environment, market analysis and future trends. The big data is multifaceted (different data types and versatile), and mostly exists in unstructured formats. The extraction of value from this data is challenging. The usability and productivity of this multifaceted unstructured data is greatly compromised. A number of factors and associated reasons affect the usability of unstructured big data. The present research work investigates these factors and associated reasons behind the usability issues of multifaceted unstructured big data. The identification of these factors contribute to develop solutions to reduce the lack of usability of highly unstructured big data. A detailed study of existing literature followed by survey questionnaire has been conducted to identify the factors and their reasons. Descriptive statistics has been used to analyse and interpret the data and results.

Big social data and digital technologies create tremendous opportunities but raise questions and concerns on ethical data usage and sharing. Moreover, big social data plays a vital role in Thailand's 20‐year national strategy to turn Thailand into a developed nation by 2037, especially on security and human capital development strategies. Nonetheless, the progress in big social data must go hand‐in‐hand with ethical standards. To date, there are no universal ethical criteria for big social data sharing and governance. This study investigates the ethical issues of big data in social media. It maps big social data to workable ethical theories. The model of big social data sharing factors was proposed. Using Thailand as a case study, the exploratory study examined the digital behaviors and moral perceptions of the millennials' big social data sharing through 71 in‐depth interviews. The results revealed a strong pattern toward “ethical consequentialism” among the Thai millennials. Examining these findings fosters the formation of big social data ethics from the views of the data generators. This study has attempted to contribute to scholarship in the growing body of work on appropriate ethical guidelines for big social data sharing and help Thailand achieve its national strategy.

Big data is a term that is used to describe data that is high volume, high velocity, and/or high variety; requires new technologies and techniques to capture, store, and analyze it; and is used to enhance decision making, provide insight and discovery, and support and optimize processes. With regard to the definition of big data, IBM Company uses volume, velocity, variety, value and veracity as 5Vs to summarize the concept of big data. There are different types of big data, for example, structured, semi-structured and un-structured data. The contents of big data can be text data, audio data, video data and still image and it indicates that the big data may have diverse data types as well as data qualities. Big data has variety of sources such as healthcare center, commercial system, industries, social media, telecommunication, transportation, sensor machines and others. In this paper, I reviewed three the most security challenging perspectives and I studied lack of concentrations in these areas by most research works. To confirm security in the big data platforms, it is critical to ascertain the data rendering points and their security techniques to safeguard the data in this pacing digital world. Then I envisage directions for the future research. In this paper, I have reviewed the big data sources and its security issues in the three directions such as data at rest, data at communication and data in process/use.
