Abstract

This chapter overviews the theory of Big Gods and the contrasting views of researchers concerning this theory. It then argues for the advantages of shifting the weight of research from linear and causal models regarding the appearance of Big Gods, social complexity, and prosociality, to multivariant approaches that think in terms self-organizing dynamic systems that give rise to functional assemblage of co-evolving cultural traits that are mutually reinforcing.
