A modern approach to graduate flight dynamics, stability, and control courses
Analysis of algorithms is a part of computing curriculums throughout the world in both undergraduate and graduate levels. However, students in general find this topic to be difficult subject due its theoretical and mathematical nature. This paper presents BiGO, a tool to support the students to understand and learn to analyze the time complexity of algorithms in rigorous manner. BiGO has four main features: i. it enables students to encode any given primitive recursive function with a specific scripting language in order to ii. automatically compute the upper bounds of the script and to, iii. visualize the behavior of the upper bounds in comparison to the most commonly occurring time complexity classes and, iv. view how long it takes for a computer to process the algorithm based on the different input values. This paper outlines the pedagogical goals of the tool and the system implementation architecture. Furthermore, we discuss future developmental plans for the tool and an evaluation within undergraduate and graduate level courses such as Data structures and algorithms and Design and analysis of algorithms.

The Brinkmanship Game: Bargaining Under the Mutual Risk of Escalation
This article describes a simple two-player game which illustrates basic concepts of brinkmanship, to include calculations of probability and expected outcomes, and risk-taking profiles. The game befits a single 50-minute class period with introduction, gameplay, and discussion. The game can supplement the study of conflict from classic Cold War case studies of crisis bargaining, to arms control, or negotiating international protocols for global climate change such as the Paris Agreement. The Brinkmanship Game was developed for the seventh week of a 10-week graduate course called Game Theory and Decisionmaking: Exploring Strategic Situations. The course features a flipped classroom with class time devoted to experimentation, gameplay, and discussion of readings and games; lectures are online. The Brinkmanship Game would be appropriate for students in any advanced undergraduate or graduate level course in international relations, security studies, negotiation, or game theory. The Brinkmanship Game provides an active learning opportunity that can be valuable for encouraging students to come to their own understanding of concepts of mutual risk-taking. The authors have found the game to be effective in the classroom and hope it may prove valuable to those searching for ways to motivate students and to help them learn.

Read moreThe Baldrige Award Framework for Teaching Total Quality Management
The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award established in 1987 has undergone many revisions and has evolved into what may safely be called the American model of total quality management. Today, there is a common language, a set of core concepts, and an accepted model of one of the most important management innovations of this century. The Baldrige Award guidelines can effectively be used for teaching TQM concepts in both undergraduate and graduate level courses as well as in company-wide management training programs. This article examines the Baldrige model and how it can be used to teach TQM effectively.
Read moreMulti-motor controller as an educational tool
Mastering concepts on power electronics and motor drives can be very challenging for many students. In order to deliver the concepts successfully hardware based learning tools are frequently used in undergraduate and graduate level courses. But most of these tools fall below expectations due to their complexity, lack of functionality or cost. This paper presents a learning tool on motor drives which addresses most of these issues. This proposed learning tool has the capability to deliver effective learning experiences on different types of motors discussed in advanced driving courses. The learning tool comes with user software which provides additional functionalities, such as the ability to manipulate closed loop variables, monitor real time speed variation, control firing patterns, log data and program the motor speed variation. The proposed learning tool is ideal to be incorporated in lab sessions to deliver important concepts in motor drives effectively and efficiently.
Read moreMorocco's Novatis Group: diaper manufacturing in a developing country
Subject area This case tackles the diaper industry in a developing country and can be applied to three different undergraduate or graduate level courses, including Marketing Management, Strategic Management, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. The case describes the industry, the manufacturing process, along with detailed information about Novatis Group's business and functions and the overall improving economic environment in Morocco. Study level/applicability The Novatis Group case has several objectives that can be applied to three different courses within undergraduate and graduate studies including Marketing Management, Strategic Management, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. Case overview The case focuses on Novatis Group, a diaper manufacturing company located in Morocco which competes against multinational companies (MNCs) such as Procter and Gamble and Kimberly Clark in order to satisfy the rising diaper needs of the country. Morocco is a developing country that is strengthening its manufacturing industries. The rising economic conditions have given way to a growing middle class and an increased demand for disposable baby diapers. Novatis uses two distribution channels for the diapers: the multi-tiered distribution channel and the streamlined (straight to retailer) channel. Novatis Group is producing diapers at full capacity; still demand has exceeded supply. Expected learning outcomes Students will understand the business processes in a developing country and how a small, local company can compete against large MNCs. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available, please consult your Librarian to access.

Read moreIntelligence Analysis Fundamentals
There are a limited number of intelligence analysis books available on the market. Intelligence Analysis Fundamentals is an introductory, accessible text for college level undergraduate and graduate level courses. While the principles outlined in the book largely follow military intelligence terminology and practice, concepts are presented to correlate with intelligence gathering and analysis performed in law enforcement, homeland security, and corporate and business security roles. Most of the existing texts on intelligence gathering and analysis focus on specific types of intelligence such as ‘target centric’ intelligence, and many of these, detail information from a position of prior knowledge. In other words, they are most valuable to the consumer who has a working-level knowledge of the subject. The book is general enough in nature that a lay student—interested in pursuing a career in intelligence, Homeland Security, or other related areas of law enforcement—will benefit from it. No prior knowledge of intelligence analysis, functions, or operations is assumed. Chapters illustrate methods and techniques that, over the years, have consistently demonstrate results, superior to those achieved with other means. Chapters describe such analytical methods that are most widely used in the intelligence community and serve as recognized standards and benchmarks in the practice of intelligence analysis. All techniques have been selected for inclusion for their specific application to homeland security, criminal investigations, and intelligence operations. Uses numerous hands-on activities—that can easily be modified by instructors to be more or less challenging depending on the course level—to reinforce concepts As current and active members of the intelligence community, the authors draw on their decades of experience in intelligence to offer real-world examples to illustrate concepts All methodologies reflect the latest trends in the intelligence communities assessment, analysis, and reporting processes with all presented being open source, non-classified information As such, the non-sensitive information presented is appropriate—and methods applicable—for use for education and training overseas and internationally Military-style collection and analysis methods are the primary ones presented, but all are directly correlated intelligence to current concepts, functions and practices within Homeland Security and the law communities Covers the counterterrorism environment where joint operations and investigative efforts combine military, private sector, and law enforcement action and information sharing The book will be a welcome addition to the body of literature available and a widely used reference for professionals and students alike.
