Material Efficiency and Energy Use
The present research investigates the potential for reducing the environmental impacts of structural systems through a more efficient use of materials. The main objective of this research is to explore and to develop a holistic and integrated methodology that utilises Building Information Modelling's (BIM) capabilities combined with structural analysis and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as well as a two-staged structural optimisation solver that achieves efficient and environmentally responsible steel design solutions. The implemented workflow utilises Autodesk Revit-BIM, Tally-LCA and Autodesk Robot-Structural Analysis. RobOpt is the plug-in that has been established using the Application Programming Interface (API) of Robot and the .NET framework of C?, and it inherits several structural functionalities based on Robot Finite Element Method (FEM) engine. The proposed RobOpt application can be accessed via a graphic user interface (GUI) within the Robot software. The developed BIM-enabled optimisation methodology could be utilised as a design tool to inform early stage structural design solutions. A prototypical steel framed structural system under certain loads has been explored. The resulting bespoke I-beam sections from the custom genetic algorithm (GA) optimisation demonstrate that significant savings-up to 21%-can be achieved in all tested environmental indicators when compared to the standard UK catalogue of steel sections. Considering all, the proposed framework constitutes a useful and an intuitive workflow, which aims to quantify the environmental savings of structural systems by utilising, advanced computational analysis and common construction techniques.

Attitude control of a flexible triangular truss in space
Large structures are being considered for future missions in space. They will make efficient use of material and hence are likely to be quite flexible. Flexible structures are distributed parameter systems with infinite-dimensional discrete spectra. They are often approximated by using a finite number of modes. When this is done, using finite element methods, many more elements must be used than the number of modes required, to ensure acceptable accuracy in the required modes. In this paper, we derive an infinite dimensional model for a planar flexible structure, an equilateral triangular truss. Exact poles (natural frequencies) and zeros are determined for transfer functions from control torques to local attitude angles, and simple control logic is given that stabilizes the attitude and all the vibration modes.

Dynamic Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is an emerging form of business process automation technology that utilizes software robots or artificial intelligence (AI) workers. Unlike traditional workflow automation tools, where a software developer creates routine actions to automate a task and connect to the backend system using internal application programming interfaces (APIs) or dedicated scripting language. In simple terms, RPA systems observe users performing tasks within an application's graphical user interface (GUI) to create a list of actions, and then automate these tasks by replicating them directly within the GUI. This approach can reduce the complexity of automation implementation in products that may not have been designed for this purpose.

Heuristic Urban-scale Life Cycle Assessment of Districts to Determine Their Carbon Footprints
The decarbonisation goals for the building sector require the large-scale determination of buildings' carbon footprints. For this purpose, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is generally used as a methodology to determine the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of individual buildings and districts. LCA tends to be granular, requiring a large amount of data and time. This work introduces Teco, an enrichment framework for heuristically determining the carbon footprints of districts using City Geography Markup Language (CityGML) Level of Detail (LoD) 2 building models along with a few manual input parameters. In this paper, a use case demonstrates the necessity for refinements of available archetypes and user input for an accurate calculation of the GWP. Key Innovations • An extended data framework for Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) based on data in City Geography Markup Language (CityGML), combining materials with physical properties relevant for Building Energy Performance Simulation (BEPS) and Global Warming Potential (GWP) determination. • Heuristic approach to determine district-scale Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) with fewer input parameters. • Developed framework Teco, prospectively, provides an efficient method for district Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) by providing a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and an input functionality of publicly available CityGML building models.
Read moreA software platform for nanoscale device simulation and visualization
NanoFEM platform is a new research environment based on the finite element method (FEM) for Technology CAD (TCAD) simulation and visualization of nanoscale devices, such as MOSFET transistors. The simulation in NanoFEM platform is based on solving partial differential equations corresponding to physical processes in modelled devices. A user or developer can provide these equations in a variational form format, and can define solver modules based on a FEM library with ability of automatic generation of finite elements and finite element forms. Solver modules can define fields for simulation and visualization and boundary conditions. Simple boundary conditions and material properties can also be specified directly in the graphical user interface. Geometry for the solved case can be defined either in graphical user interface or using Python scripting. Quality tetrahedral meshes necessary for FEM simulations are generated automatically. Visualization and post-processing is available in graphical user interface. We present some of related major existing solutions, namely open source geometry editors, mesh generators, computation libraries and visualization tools for FEM. We discuss major software components of the NanoFEM platform, i.e. Salome Platform and DOLFIN/FEniCS. We present an example simulation and visualization in NanoFEM platform. This is a simulation of the Poisson's equation on a 3D structure consisting of several geometry groups and materials forming a FinFET transistor with a mesh consisting of hundreds of thousands tetrahedrons. Because NanoFEM platform consists almost entirely of open source software components, others could eventually build similar solutions including, but not limited to TCAD device simulations after reading and reviewing the NanoFEM platform design and components.

In this paper the essence of the concept of circular economy was determined. The processes of transition to a circular economy are analyzed, as a result of which three levels are distinguished: efficient use of materials; product life extention; smart production and use of products. The connection between the circular economy and sustainable development was implemented. The main business models of the circular economy are considered: Resources recovery, Sharing platforms, Product life extension, Product as a service, Circular suppliers. Strategies and tools of circular economy are developed. The world experience of waste utilization is considered.

Materials and energy accounting
Materials and energy accounting and reporting is a subset of environmental management accounting and reporting, which is a subset of sustainability accounting and reporting. Use and availability of materials and energy are of such high sustainability and economic relevance that specialised accounting has been developed to assist management in dealing with emissions and waste as well as the limited supply of natural resources. International standards, such as ISO 14051 Material Flow Coast Accounting and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems, aim to improve awareness of the importance and the efficient use of materials and energy in business. Physical and monetary information about materials and energy use can then be provided to stakeholders for the purpose of accountability. Challenges include determining the role of accountants in this space and choosing between different standards available. A second challenge is that materials and energy accounting can be designed with specific management tasks in mind, but external reporting of the information remains subject to management discretion over different cost allocation systems. Finally, is the issue of how to transform materials and energy management at the business level towards achieving broader goals such as keeping within planetary boundaries and accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Cyclic Loading Test for Composite Walls with U-Shaped Steel Boundary Elements
A steel–concrete composite wall with boundary elements of steel U-section was developed for high structural performance and efficient use of materials. Cyclic lateral loading tests were performed on the proposed walls to investigate the flexural and shear performances. The test parameters included the failure mode of specimens, type of boundary reinforcement, sectional area of steel U-sections, horizontal web reinforcement ratio, and wall thickness. In the flexural yielding specimens, the flexural strengths of the proposed walls were equivalent to those of conventional reinforced concrete (RC) walls with boundary elements of vertical rebars, even though the yield strength of steel plates was 24% less than that of rebars. Further, the use of steel U-sections increased displacement ductility and energy dissipation, providing lateral confinement to the boundary concrete and restraining shear cracking and sliding. In the shear failure-mode specimens, the use of steel U-sections increased the diagonal tension-shear strength of walls. Thus, the shear strength of the composite walls was greater than that of conventional RC walls. The existing design method of JGJ 138 reasonably predicted the shear strength of the proposed composite walls, considering the contribution of boundary steel U-sections.
Read moreVariability in component systems
It has been proposed within the hypothesis of the previous essay that considerations of material properties, performance criteria and formal configurations are best considered as interdependent in order to develop a more effective component application. A comprehensive approach such as this is intended to allow for a more efficient use of material as it will not be conventionally applied to address generic and global application criteria, but instead more effectively related to variable and local concerns This essay documents a specific example in which a comprehensive understanding of material and performance related strategies define opportunities and limitations inherent within the formal configuration of the component design
