Abstract

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is abundant in the nervous system. NCAM plays a pivotal role in brain development, synaptic plasticity, and learning and memory processes, as well as regeneration. Alternative splicing of the NCAM single gene gives rise to three major NCAM isoforms termed NCAM-180, NCAM-140, and NCAM-120, named according to their molecular weights. The composition of NCAM isoforms as well as their posttranslational modification change during development. This review summarizes our knowledge on NCAM biosynthesis, focusing on the mechanisms of alternative splicing, biosynthesis, posttranslational modifications, and expression of NCAM in different organs during development.KeywordsNCAMBiosynthesisAlternative splicingPosttranslational modificationsDevelopment
