Algology and protistology at the German University in Prague in the inter-war period, II. Ernst Georg Pringsheim and Institute for Plant Physiology The study focuses on the life and work of Ernst Georg Pringsheim and his co-workers Viktor Czurda and Felix Mainx at the German University in Prague. In the years 1923–1938 E. G. Pringsheim was the director of the Institute of Plant Physiology at the Faculty of Science. Present study recapitulates Pringsheim′s career and shows how his studies established cultivation of microalgae and protists as one of the main research tools in this field. Besides the studies on cultivation, the present study also deals with Pringsheim′s studies on vascular plant development and his views on evolution of microorganisms. Finally, the study analyses the research of V. Czurda, F. Mainx and E. G. Pringsheim focused on sexual phenomena in microorganisms, including their controversy with Max Hartmann concerning the nature and substance of sexual reproduction.

DB. GUSTAV ORTNER, of the Institut für Radiumforschung, Vienna, writes in connexion with the paragraph on the future of Czechoslovakia in NATURE of October 8, p. 637, that it gives an inadequate idea of the historical development of the universities in Czechoslovakia. He continues, “the University of Prague [was] founded by the German Emperor Karl IV in 1348 and so is the most ancient German university. It was only in the course of the nineteenth century that lectures in Czech were given and in 1882 an independent Czech University was separated off from it. In 1920 the ancient name of 'Karls-Universität' of the German University was transferred to the Czech University....” Obviously it was not possible to go into details in a brief paragraph, but the facts were correctly given. It is true that Charles IV (Karl in German, Karel in Czech) was not only king of Bohemia but Holy Roman Emperor as well, yet it was as king of Bohemia that he founded the University of Prague, and the 560th anniversary of his death was celebrated there on November 27. The Czech character of the University was emphasized by his son, Wenceslas IV, in a special decree in 1409. The University of Vienna dates from 1364, and that of Leipzig from 1409, having been founded in Saxony as a challenge to Prague at a time when Czech was used as well as Latin, which was naturally the main literary language there as everywhere at that time. Thus, the University of Prague is the oldest in Central Europe, but by its foundation it cannot be considered a German university. From 1620 until 1882 it was styled the Charles-Ferdinand University. Afterwards Prague had two universities, the Charles (Czech) and the Ferdinand, or now simply, German University. Another correspondent refers at length to a number of distinguished Prague biologists and the mathematician, Bolzano, not mentioned in the further article, in NATURE of November 26, p. 942.

Algology and protistology at the German University in Prague in the inter-war period, I. Adolf Pascher and his legacy The study focuses on the life and work of Adolf Pascher, one of the most prominent phycologists and protistologists of the 20th century. Almost for his entire life Pascher worked at the German University in Prague. Since 1933 he was the director of the Botanical Institute and Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science. Present study illustrates Pascher’s career and shows that his studies was largely based in application of Haeckels biogenetic rule to microorganisms and algae. Finally, Pascher’s work and life in times of the Third Reich, as well as later significance of his studies are discussed.

A new palaeodictyopteroid (Megasecoptera: Brodiopteridae) from the Early Pennsylvanian of northern China reveals unique morphological traits and intra-specific variability. Alcheringa 39, XXX–XXX. ISSN 0311-5518Evaluation of abundant insect fossils from the Early Pennsylvanian (Namurian) Tupo Formation of northern China (Xiaheyan locality, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region) enabled description of a new megasecopteran, i.e., Brodioptera sinensis sp. nov. and emendation of Brodiopteridae. Brodioptera sinensis is defined principally on wing venation characters and darkly pigmented wing apices, but a few have hyaline wing membranes possibly reflecting freshly emerged imagoes or subimagoes without fully developed coloration. The large assemblage of 54 specimens enabled documentation of intra-specific variability in wing venation. In addition, the new species reveals the detailed morphology of the haustellate mouthparts with conspicuous elongated stylets, and external copulatory organs that, previously, were poorly documented or unknown. The male and female external genitalia are similar to members of Protohymenidae (Megasecoptera) and Asthenohymenidae (Diaphanopterodea). Brodioptera sinensis is related to Brodioptera stricklani and Brodioptera cumberlandensis both known from localities in Euramerica suggesting faunal exchange occurred during the Bashkirian. Moreover, based on our analysis of veinal characters and re-examination of the holotype of Sylvohymen pintoi Brauckmann known from Namurian of Hagen-Vorhalle (Germany), we propose transferring this taxon to Brodiopteridae as Brodioptera pintoi comb. nov. On July 5th passed away academician professor Jana Zvarova, one of pioneers and one of most influential Medical informatics scientist and expert in Europe and in the world. Professor Jana Zvarova was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After graduating in mathematics in 1965 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague she has been working with several faculties of Charles University in Prague. She completed external doctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Albert Perez, member of IFIP. He brought her attention to the field of Medical informatics and opened the contacts with founders of IMIA. Jana Zvárová founded the Medical informatics section of the Czech Society of biomedical engineering and Medical informatics in the year 1978. The same year, she received Ph.D. scientific degree at Charles University in Prague. She passed the habilitation at Charles University in 1991 and she was nominated by the president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel as Full Professor at Charles University in Prague in 1999. She reached the highest Czech scientific degree, Doctor of Sciences in 1999 at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Thie article briefly characterizes presentations of PhD students in electroanalytical chemistry at this cross-border seminar organized jointly by Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague and the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Chemo- and Biosensors of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Regensburg. On the basis of these presentation new trends in resent electroanalytical chemistry are discussed together with their application in different natural sciences and with their combination with different separation and spectrometric methods. Aims: The aim of this poster is to chronologically describe the past thirty years of the field of Applied Physical Activity at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University in Prague and to place the emergence of the field in its historical context. Method: The research method used was historical with the application of methods and techniques inherent to historiography, especially the analysis of historical sources and the use of auxiliary historical sciences and archives, including those that archive documents from research or materials from the field of applied physical education at Charles University. In this theoretical work, available historical publications such as monographs, articles, and internal publications of Charles University, mainly from the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, were used to map more than thirty years of the history of the field. As part of the data collection, interviews were also conducted with former and current teachers of the field, the study department and the Vice Dean for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. Result: Applied physical activity is a kinanthropological discipline dealing with the organisation of physical activity programmes for people with specific needs. At the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University, a discipline with this focus was opened in 1992 under the name Physical and Occupational Education for the Disabled. This poster presents the development and key milestones of the field of Adapted Physical Activities (APA) at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University over the last thirty years, and offers an overview of the different periods of the field, setting the emergence of the field in its historical context. In the more than 30 years since its inception, the field has undergone a number of changes leading to the creation of the current field of Adapted Physical Education and sport for persons with special needs in the Department of Health Physical Education and Sports Medicine fakulty of Physical Education and Sport Charles University in Prague Czech Republic. Prokop, J., Roques, P. & Nel, A., 2014. New non-holometabolous insects from the Pennsylvanian of the Avion locality in Pas-de-Calais, France (Insecta: ‘Exopterygota’). Alcheringa 38, 155–169. ISSN 0311–5518.New palaeopteran and neopteran insects are described from Moscovian impression fossils of the Pas-de-Calais Basin in northern France. Spilaptera splendens sp. nov. (Palaeodictyoptera) is based on new forewing venation characters including a well-developed anal bar in the form of a cuticular reinforcement extending from the anal area to the radial stem, a feature previously unknown in this genus. This character was also confirmed after re-examination of S. libelluloides. The discovery of a wing part with a large anal fan supports the presence of a gigantic palaeodictyopteran that can be assigned to Homoiopteridae. Based on a petiolate wing, Jacquesoudardia magnifica gen. et sp. nov. represents a small damselfly-like odonatopteran that was probably predatory on small arthropods and coexisted with larger meganeurid species such as Gallotupus oudardi from the same locality. The discovery of Paolia sp. (Paoliidae), known previously from the Bashkirian of Indiana (USA) and South Limbourg (the Netherlands), extends the distribution and stratigraphic range of the genus. Characterized by a short ScP, Aviogramma gracilis gen. et sp. nov. is the second member of Caloneurodea from the Pas-de-Calais Basin after Pruvostiella lecomtei (Pruvost). Aviocladus pectinatus gen. et sp. nov. and Aviohapaloptera bethouxi gen. et sp. nov. are both assigned to Archaeorthoptera. Aviocladus pectinatus, a member of Cnemidolestodea, preserves a venation pattern that allows restoration of Tococladus to Archaeorthoptera. Aviohapaloptera has strongly similar venation to Hapaloptera, known from Mazon Creek (USA), in bearing a pectinate CuPb, CuA+CuPa with few posterior branches, a narrow costal area and radial posterior (RP) with few branches. In addition, we restore Narkeminidae stat. rest. and separate it from Proedischiidae. After 1882, the development of the University of Prague and its division reflected the situation of Czech and German society in the Czech Lands. While German Studies at the German university of Prague since 1882, when the University of Prague was divided into two autonomous – German and Czech – institutions, continued its pedagogical and scientific activities, it was necessary to establish German studies at the Czech university of Prague. Despite the progressive specialization of German Studies in German language and literature and the following internal differentiation of German Studies into older and newer German language and literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, great attention was traditionally paid to the older German language and literature in the curriculum of German Studies. The teaching here focused mainly on the analysis and interpretation of Gothic, Old and Middle High German texts from a linguistic and literary point of view. After 1900, the content of diachronic courses changed for German Germanists in favor of prehistory, dialectology and onomastics, and for Czech Germanists it was directed towards German-Czech language contacts, especially in the lexicon. These changes in the teaching profile and scholarly area were related not only to the development of German Studies, but also to social changes, especially in the 1930s and 1940s.

The German University in Prague was founded in 1348 by the German Emperor Karl IV. However, it was not until 1808 that an eye clinic was established there, by Johann Nepomuk Fischer; the clinic was incorporated into the university in 1820. Fischer retired in 1847 and was succeeded by Ferdinand Arlt, though not as professor in ordinary. Fortunately, the chair in Prague was offered to Arlt before he had definitively accepted a call to Leipzig. During the period 1856 to 1883 Ferdinand Ritter von Arlt held the chair of ophthalmology in Vienna, an ophthalmic center of high repute. One of his most famous pupils was Albrecht von Graefe, of Berlin. Josef von Hasner directed the Prague Eye Clinic from 1856 to 1883, followed by Hubert Sattler (1886-1891). Isidor Schnabel was professor in Prague from 1891 to 1895, before going to Vienna. His successor, Wilhelm Paul Czermak, directed the Prague Eye Clinic from 1895 to 1906. He was followed by Isidor Schnabel's most outstanding pupil, Anton Elschnig, a Styrian by birth, who held the chair from 1907 to 1933. Under Elschnig's guidance the Prague University Eye Clinic reached a high international standard. Professor Elschnig retired in 1933 and died in Vienna in 1939 following a street accident. Elschnig's successor was his former assistant Jaroslav Kubik; he had to relinquish the chair after the Germans occupied Czechoslovakia because his wife was Jewish.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
