BOUNDED CONVERGENCE THEOREMS

In a recent paper, F. Bombal and P. Cembranos showed that if E is a Banach space such that E* is separable, then C(Q, E), the Banach space of continuous functions from a compact Hausdorff space Q to E, has the Dieudonne property. They asked whether or not the result is still true if one only assumes that E does not contain a copy of l1. In this paper we give a positive answer to their question. As a corollary we show that if E is a subspace of an order continuous Banach lattice, then E has the Dieudonne property if and only if C(Q, E) has the same property. If E is a Banach space and Q is a compact Hausdorff space, then C(Q, E) will stand for the Banach space of the E-valued continuous functions on Q under the supremum norm. A Banach space E is said to have the Dieudonne property if for every Banach space F, any bounded linear operator T: E -> F that transforms weakly Cauchy sequences into weakly convergent sequences is weakly compact. In [3] F. Bombal and P. Cembranos showed that if E is a Banach space such that E* is separable, then C(Q, E) has the Dieudonne property and they asked whether the same result is true when replacing the assumption that E* is separable by supposing only that 11 does not embed in E. In this paper we give a positive answer to their question. Recall that a topological space (X, -y) is said to be Polish if it is homeomorphic to a separable complete metric space and it is said to be analytic if it is the continuous image of a Polish space. A subset A of a topological space (X, y) is said to be coanalytic if its complement (X\A, y) is analytic. Finally A is said to be PCA if it is the continuous image of a coanalytic space. The notations and terminology used and not defined can be found in [5, 8, or 10]. In the proof of Lemma 3 we need the following two results. THEOREM 1 (M. SREBRNY [9]). Let X and Y be two analytic spaces and let F be a multivalued function from X to the subsets of Y, such that its graph is PCA and for which one can prove that for every x c X, F(x) :8 0 using only the axioms of ZFC. Let K be a compact Hausdorff space and let E be a Banach space. We denote by C(K, E) the Banach space of all E-valued continuous functions defined on K, endowed with the supremum norm. We study in this paper Banach-Saks operators defined on C(K, E) spaces. We characterize these operators for a large class of compacts K (the scattered ones), or for a large class of Banach spaces E (the superreflexive ones). We also show by some examples that our theorems can not be extended directly.

In this note an analytic representation is given for continuous linear operators from C ( X ) C(X) into a linear normed space Y where C ( X ) C(X) is the space of continuous functions on [0, 1] with values in a linear normed space X.

This chapter is about metric spaces, an abstract generalization of the real line that allows discussion of open and closed sets, limits, convergence, continuity, and similar properties. The usual distance function for the real line becomes an example of a metric. The other notions are defined in terms of the metric. The advantage of the generalization is that proofs of certain properties of the real line immediately go over to all other examples. Section 1 gives the definition of metric space and open set, and it lists a number of important examples, including Euclidean spaces and certain spaces of functions. Sections 2 through 4 develop properties of open and closed sets, continuity, and convergence of sequences that are simple generalizations of known facts about $\mathbb{R}$. Section 5 shows how a subset of a metric space can be made into a metric space so that the restriction of a continuous function from the whole space to the subset remains continuous. It also shows that three natural metrics for the product of two metric spaces lead to the same open sets, continuous functions, and convergent sequences. Section 6 shows that any metric space is “Hausdorff,” “regular,” and “normal,” and it goes on to exhibit three different countability hypotheses about a metric space as equivalent. A metric space with these properties is called “separable.” Section 7 concerns compactness and completeness. A metric space is defined to be “compact” if every open cover has a finite subcover. This property is equivalent to the condition that every sequence has a convergent subsequence. The Heine–Borel Theorem says that the compact sets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are exactly the closed bounded sets. A number of the results early in Chapter I that were proved by the Bolzano–Weierstrass Theorem in the context of the real line are seen to extend to any compact metric space. A metric space is “complete” if every Cauchy sequence is convergent. A metric space is compact if and only if it is complete and “totally bounded.” Section 8 concerns connectedness, which is an abstraction of the property of an interval of the line that accounts for the Intermediate Value Theorem. Section 9 proves a fundamental result known as the Baire Category Theorem. A sample consequence of the theorem is that the pointwise limit of a sequence of continuous complex-valued functions on a complete metric space must have points where it is continuous. Section 10 studies the spaces of real-valued and complex-valued continuous functions on a compact metric space. A generalization of Ascoli's Theorem from the setting of Chapter I provides a characterization of compact sets in either of these spaces of continuous functions. A generalization of the Weierstrass Approximation Theorem, known as the Stone–Weierstrass Theorem, gives sufficient conditions for a subalgebra of either of these spaces of continuous functions to be dense. One consequence is that these spaces of continuous functions are separable. Section 11 constructs the “completion” of a metric space out of Cauchy sequences in the given space. The result is a complete metric space and a distance-preserving map of the given metric space into the completion such that the image is dense.

On continuous selections for metric projections in spaces of continuous functions

Let K be a compact Hausdorff space and let )~ be a probability measure on K. We denote by Lo(K,2) the space of all Borel functions f:K--*N with the topology of convergence in measure. Lo(K, 2) is an F-space (complete metric topological vector space) if, as usual, we identify functions equal almost everywhere. Spaces of the type Lo(K,2 ) are probably the most studied examples of non-locally convex topological vector spaces. In spite of their bad reputation there is some evidence that they are in fact rather well-behaved spaces. Thus for a general topological vector space X it is often very useful to be able to produce nontrivial linear operators T:X--*Lo(K,2 ), in the same way as linear functionals facilitate the theory of locally convex spaces. We shall say that a point xeX is pathological it wherever T:X-*Lo(K, 2) is a continuous linear operator then Tx=O. X is pathological if every xsX is pathological. Note that if X is separable then it suffices in the definition to take K =(0, 1) with Lebesgue measure. The first example of a pathological F-space was given in 1973 by Christensen and Herer [3]. A more natural example is the space Lp/Hp where 0 < p < 1 (see [1, 5]). However the Christensen-Herer example also showed the connection with pathological submeasures. We recall that if d is an algebra of subsets of some abstract set L then a submeasure 4~:d--,lR is a map satisfying ~b(A)<_~b(AwB)<d~(A)+O(B) and th(O) = 0. 4~ is said to be pathological (see [3, 11]) if whenever 2 : d ~ N is a (finitelyadditive) measure with 0 <)~(A) < th(A) (At d ) then )~0. Now if S(~) denotes the space of all simple d-measurable functions f:L~IR, then S(~) can be topologized by the topology of convergence in @measure (functions differing only on a set of @measure zero are identified). Function-space compactifications of function spaces

This chapter pursues three lines of investigation in the subject of functional analysis—one involving smooth functions and distributions, one involving fixed-point theorems, and one involving spectral theory.Section 1 introduces topological vector spaces. These are real or complex vector spaces with a Hausdorff topology in which addition and scalar multiplication are continuous. Examples include normed linear spaces, spaces given by a separating family of countably many seminorms, and weak and weak-star topologies in the context of Banach spaces. Various general properties of topological vector spaces are proved, and it is proved that the quotient of a topological vector space by a closed vector subspace is Hausdorff and is therefore a topological vector space.Section 2 introduces a topology on the space C∞(U) of smooth functions on an open subset of ℝN. The support of a continuous linear functional on C∞(U) is defined and shown to be a compact subset of U. Accordingly, the continuous linear functionals are called distributions of compact support.Section 3 studies weak and weak-star topologies in more detail. The main result is Alaoglu’s Theorem, which says that the closed unit ball in the weak-star topology on the dual of a normed linear space is compact. In an earlier chapter a preliminary form of this theorem was used to construct elements in a dual space as limits of weak-star convergent subsequences.Section 4 follows Alaoglu’s Theorem along a particular path, giving what amounts to a first example of the Gelfand theory of Banach algebras. The relevant theorem, known as the Stone Representation Theorem, says that conjugate-closed uniformly closed subalgebras containing the constants in B(S) are isomorphic via a norm-preserving algebra isomorphism to the space of all continuous functions on some compact Hausdorff space. The compact space in question is the space of multiplicative linear functionals on the subalgebra, and the proof of compactness uses Alaoglu’s Theorem.Sections 5–6 return to the lines of study toward distributions and fixed-point theorems. Section 5 studies the relationship between convexity and the existence of separating linear functionals. The main theorem makes use of the Hahn-Banach Theorem. Section 6 introduces locally convex topological vector spaces. Application of the basic separation theorem from the previous section shows the existence of many continuous linear functionals on such a space.Section 7 specializes to the line of study via smooth functions and distributions. The topic is the introduction of a certain locally convex topology on the space C ∞com (U) of smooth functions of compact support on U. This is best characterized by a universal mapping property introduced in the section.Sections 8–9 pursue locally convex spaces along the other line of study that split off in Section 5. Section 8 gives the Krein-Milman Theorem, which asserts the existence of a supply of extreme points for any nonempty compact convex set in a locally convex topological vector space. Section 9 relates compact convex sets to the subject of fixed-point theorems.Section 10 takes up the abstract theory of Banach algebras, with particular attention to commutative C* algebras with identity. Three examples are the algebras characterized by the Stone Representation Theorem, any L∞ space, and any adjoint-closed commutative Banach algebra consisting of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space and containing the identity.Section 11 continues the investigation of the last of the examples in the previous section and derives the Spectral Theorem for bounded self-adjoint operators and certain related families of operators. Powerful applications follow from a functional calculus implied by the Spectral Theorem. If H is a linear subspace of C(X) which separates the points of X and contains the constant functions, then it is well known that there exists a smallest closed subset of X, called the Silov boundary of X relative to H and denoted by OHX, with the property that each hCH attains its maximum value on afHX. A point xeX is called an H-extremal point if the only positive linear functional u on C(X) such that u(h) = h(x) for all hCH is the evaluation functional 4. where O.,(f) =f(x) for all fE C(X). The set of H-extremal points of X is called the Choquet boundary of X relative to H and will be denoted by VHX. H. Bauer has shown [1, 2.1 ] that the Choquet boundary of X relative to H is nonempty and the Silov boundary of X relative to H is equal to the closure of the Choquet boundary. Bauer has also introduced (see [1 ]) an abstract Dirichlet problem for the above setting. If S:DHX is closed and xCX, then MS denotes the set of positive linear functionals u on C(S) such that u(h I S) =h(x) for all hCH. MS is always nonempty. The measures in MX'HX are called the H-harmonic measures belonging to x. A function f in C(X) is said to be H-harmonic if for every xEX and every u M we have u(f) =f(x). The set of H-harmonic functions is denoted by H. The Dirichlet problem is said to be solvable for X relative to H if 1^ j aHX = c(aHX). The Dirichlet problem is solvable if and only if to each x in X belongs exactly one H-harmonic measure (see [1, Satz 9]). Let X1, X2 be compact Hausdorff spaces and H1, H2 separating linear subspaces of C(X1), C(X2) respectively, which contain the constant functions. Equipped with the usual product topology, the cartesian product X1 X X2 is a compact Hausdorff space. Let K_1, K_2 be compact Hausdorff spaces and E_1, E_2 be Banach spaces not containing a copy of c_0. We establish lower estimates of the Banach–Mazur distance between the spaces of continuous functions {mathcal {C}}(K_1, E_1) and {mathcal {C}}(K_2, E_2) based on the ordinals ht(K_1), ht(K_2), which are new even for the case of spaces of real-valued functions on ordinal intervals. As a corollary we deduce that {mathcal {C}}(K_1, E_1) and {mathcal {C}}(K_2, E_2) are not isomorphic if ht(K_1) is substantially different from ht(K_2).

On the universal completion of pointfree function spaces

UDC 513.88 It the article we study sublinear functionals that are defined on the space of Bochner integrable functions and possess the properties of decomposition and scalar compactness. We give an integral representation for the functionals. Such functionals are used in proving theorems on existence of continuous selections for a family of lower semicontinuous multivalued mappings with decomposable closed nonconvex values in the space of Bochner integrable functions. Norm or numerical radius attaining polynomials on C(K)

The main purpose of this work is to study some infinite combinatorics applications in spaces of continuous functions, defined in Hausdorff compact spaces. Using infinite combinatorics in Boolean algebras, through Stone duality, we obtain a compact Hausdorff space. With certain properties in Boolean algebras it is possible to analyze analytic properties in the space of continuous functions defined in such space. Specifically, we analyze the Grothendieck property.
