Can You Fast Forward Creativity?

The speed of packet forwarding is crucial for the overall transmission performance of network devices. A large number of studies have proposed an acceleration scheme for network traffic processing, which requires not only efficient routing lookup algorithms, but also high-performance architecture and forwarding control architecture. This paper proposes a fast packet forwarding framework based on the existing kernel to achieve the processing of network traffic acceleration. When the router receives the first packet of the same stream, it saves the content to be forwarded to the new fast forwarding table. In this process, it builds a database. The generated fast forwarding table can be used to guide packet forwarding. Once hit, it can directly extract the next hop information in the table, To guide the forwarding of messages. Experiments have shown that for frequently arriving traffic, it can be directly forwarded through a fast forwarding path. The performance testing experimental results show that building a fast forwarding framework and selecting appropriate routing lookup algorithms can directly forward packets that hit the table entry content when facing a large number of flows, greatly improving the forwarding efficiency.

Our new out-of-order processor simulatol; FastSim, uses two innovations to speed up simulation 8--15 times (vs. Wisconsin SimpleScalar) with no loss in simulation accuracy. First, FastSim uses speculative direct-execution to accelerate the functional emulation of speculatively executed program code. Second, it uses a variation on memoization---a well-known technique in programming language implementation---to cache microarchitecture states and the resulting simulator actions, and then "fast forwards" the simulation the next time a cached state is reached. Fast-forwarding accelerates simulation by an order of magnitude, while producing exactly the same, cycle-accurate result as conventional simulation.

Did you enjoy <em> 1864 </em> (2014)? I sure did. That's because I watched it on fast-forward. I am not sure I should admit this on a forum dedicated to all things television and I am slightly embarrassed. But more of my red ears of shame later. <em> 1864 </em> is not the only programme through which I tend to zoom. <em> Downton Abbey </em> (2010-2014) got the fast-forward treatment.

Life in the modernist era not only moved, it sped. As automobiles, airplanes, and high-speed industrial machinery proliferated at the turn of the twentieth century, a fascination with speed influenced artists - from Moscow to Manhattan - working in a variety of media. Russian avant-garde literary, visual, and cinematic artists were among those striving to elevate the ordinary physical concept of speed into a source of inspiration and generate new possibilities for everyday existence. Although modernism arrived somewhat late in Russia, the increased tempo of life at the start of the twentieth century provided Russia's avant-garde artists with an infusion of creative dynamism and crucial momentum for revolutionary experimentation. In Fast Forward Tim Harte presents a detailed examination of the images and concepts of speed that permeated Russian modernist poetry, visual arts, and cinema. His study illustrates how a wide variety of experimental artistic tendencies of the day - such as 'rayism' in poetry and painting, the effort to create a 'transrational' language (zaum') in verse, and movements seemingly as divergent as neo-primitivism and constructivism - all relied on notions of speed or dynamism to create at least part of their effects. Fast Forward reveals how the Russian avant-garde's race to establish a new artistic and social reality over a twenty-year span reflected an ambitious metaphysical vision that corresponded closely to the nation's rapidly changing social parameters. The embrace of speed after the 1917 Revolution, however, paradoxically hastened the movement's demise. By the late 1920s, under a variety of historical pressures, avant-garde artistic forms morphed into those more compatible with the political agenda of the Russian state. Experimentation became politically suspect and abstractionism gave way to orthodox realism, ultimately ushering in the socialist realism and aesthetic conformism of the Stalin years.

In general, video-based learning contains rich media information, but displaying an entire video linearly is time-consuming. As an alternative, video summarization techniques extract important content provides short but informative fragments. In this paper, a video learning platform (KVSUM: Keyword-based Video Summarization) is presented that integrates image processing, text summarization, and keyword extraction techniques. Without human annotators, the learning platform can process an input video and transform it into online learning materials automatically. The video frames are first split from a given video while the transcription is used to generate the text summary and keywords. In the current study, the video surrogates are composed of extracted keywords, text and video summaries, and video frames. In other words, KVSUM is able to provide both visual and verbal surrogates. In order to validate the effect of surrogates in the KVSUM, a comparison with another video surrogate, the fast forward (FF), to evaluate learners' comprehension to video contents. Sixty undergraduate students took part in examining two different video surrogates. The experimental results show that KVSUM had a more positive effect than FF in comprehension to videos. In terms of system usage and satisfaction, KVSUM is significantly more attractive than FF to learners.

A hardware-assisted design, dubbed cache-oriented multistage structure (COMS), is proposed for fast packet forwarding. COMS incorporates small on-chip cache memory in its constituent switching elements (SEs) for a parallel router to interconnect its line cards (LCs) and forwarding engines (FEs, where table lookups are performed). Each lookup result in COMS is cached in a series of SEs between the FE (which performs the lookup) and the LC (where the lookup request originates). The cached lookup results fulfill subsequent lookup requests for identical addresses immediately without resorting to FEs for (time-consuming) lookups, thus reducing the mean lookup time tremendously. COMS calls for partitioning the set of prefixes in a routing table into subsets (of roughly equal sizes) so that each subset involves only a small fraction of the table for one FE. This leads to a substantial savings of SRAM required in each FE to hold its forwarding table, and the total savings of SRAM in a parallel router far exceeds the amount of SRAM employed in all SE's of COMS combined. A COMS-based router of size 16 exhibits over 10 times faster mean packet forwarding than its compatible router without caching nor table partitioning. The worst case lookup time in COMS depends on the matching algorithm employed in FE's and can often be shorter than that in a compatible router. With its ability to forward packets swiftly, COMS is ideally suitable for the new generation of parallel routers.

In this paper, a fast forward solver based on Finite Element Method (FEM) and databases of unflawed field information is newly developed for the rapid computation of Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) signals for Nondestructive Testing (NDT) of Metallic Foam to reduce the computer resources necessary for this 3D FEM analysis. Through comparing numerical results of present method with those of a full FEM code, it is demonstrated that the proposed fast scheme can significantly decrease the computer resources but with same accuracy.

As the most critical network element on the user plane of the 5G core network, UPF (User Plan Function) carries important functions such as user data processing and forwarding. The performance of UPF has a great impact on the delay, bandwidth, jitter and other indicators of the entire system. Therefore, we need high-performance UPF with efficient data processing and forwarding capabilities. In order to achieve highperformance UPF, we will optimize the performance of UPF from three aspects. First of all, on the UPF architecture, we decoupled the UPF into two parts: the control sub-module and the forwarding sub-module. Secondly, in order to achieve the high throughput design requirements of the user plane, we used the DPDK (Data Plan Development Kit) solution to replace the Linux kernel network protocol stack forwarding mode. Finally, in order to realize the fast-forwarding processing operation of the message, we designed a fast matching and forwarding module based on the traditional message matching and forwarding rules to achieve efficient indexing and matching. Through the optimization of the above three parts, our pure soft UPF solution has a single machine measured performance of up to 40Gbps, which is easy to expand and deploy and meet the needs of different scenarios in the industry.

The Helios 1 (H1) and Helios 2 (H2) spacecraft measured the solar winds at a distance between ∼0.3 and 1.0 au from the Sun. With increasing heliocentric distance (r h), the plasma speed is found to increase at ∼34–40 km s−1 au−1 and the density exhibits a sharper fall () compared to the magnetic field magnitude () and the temperature (). Using all available solar wind plasma and magnetic field measurements, we identified 68 and 39 fast interplanetary shocks encountered by H1 and H2, respectively. The overwhelming majority (85%) of the shocks are found to be driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). While the two spacecraft encountered more than 73 solar wind high-speed streams (HSSs), only ∼22% had shocks at the boundaries of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) formed by the HSSs. All of the ICME shocks were found to be fast forward (FF) shocks; only four of the CIR shocks were fast reverse shocks. Among all ICME FF shocks (CIR FF shocks), 60% (75%) are quasi-perpendicular with shock normal angles (θ Bn) ≥ 45° relative to the upstream ambient magnetic field, and 40% (25%) are quasi-parallel (θ Bn < 45°). No radial dependences were found in FF shock normal angle and speed. The FF shock Mach number (M ms), magnetic field, and plasma compression ratios are found to increase with increasing r h at the rates of 0.72, 0.89, and 0.98 au−1, respectively. On average, ICME FF shocks are found to be considerably faster (∼20%) and stronger (with ∼28% higher M ms) than CIR FF shocks.

when multiple virtual routers in identic logic network cohabit a shared router platform of physical network, this paper proposes an Interiorly Fast Forwarding Technique (IFFT) based on study of Open Shortest Past First (OSPF) and investigation in generation of FIB.This technique is proved in which reducing delay is the yardstick of solving fast forwarding among multiple virtual routers. Its purpose is to eliminate the hops of packet forwarding and to advance the speed of packet transmitting.Meanwhile, this technique enhances network robustness by reducing network loss ratio that caused by single point of failure.

ObjectiveIn this commentary I respond to points raised in the commentary by Mushak [Ad hoc and fast forward: the science and control of hormesis growth and development. Environ Health Perspect 117:1333–1338 (2009)], which principally concerns studies by me and my colleagues concerning the frequency of hormesis in toxicology.DiscussionIn this commentary I demonstrate that Mushak’s analysis contains critical statistical errors and misunderstandings of statistical concepts that invalidate its conclusions concerning the frequency of hormesis in the toxicologic literature.ConclusionsIn his commentary Mushak offers no significant new conceptual insights, and his key technical criticisms of hormesis frequency findings are unfounded.

Trotterization-based, iterative approaches to quantum simulation (QS) are restricted to simulation times less than the coherence time of the quantum computer (QC), which limits their utility in the near term. Here, we present a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm, called variational fast forwarding (VFF), for decreasing the quantum circuit depth of QSs. VFF seeks an approximate diagonalization of a short-time simulation to enable longer-time simulations using a constant number of gates. Our error analysis provides two results: (1) the simulation error of VFF scales at worst linearly in the fast-forwarded simulation time, and (2) our cost function’s operational meaning as an upper bound on average-case simulation error provides a natural termination condition for VFF. We implement VFF for the Hubbard, Ising, and Heisenberg models on a simulator. In addition, we implement VFF on Rigetti’s QC to demonstrate simulation beyond the coherence time. Finally, we show how to estimate energy eigenvalues using VFF.
