Capturing Structural Complexity of Innovation Diffusion through System Dynamics

The long-standing use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides has created habits and dependency among farmers. Inorganic materials have become commonplace and it seems as if there are no other options to use as farming inputs. Basically, synthetic-based agricultural production materials can damage the environment and potentially harm farmers. Most farmers in the Subak Wengaya Betan Farmers Group have switched from using inorganic materials to organic ones up to now. This should serve as an example of how farmers in Subak Wengaya Betan can adopt organic farming innovations. This research aims to analyze the diffusion process of organic agricultural communication innovations as an effort to mitigate climate change in the Subak Wengaya Betan Farmers Group, Bali Province. The main process in qualitative research was chosen to obtain in-depth results through the data collection stage using interviews, observations, and other documentation to gather detailed information as data collection techniques. The results of this study indicate that effective steps that can be accepted by farmers to transition to organic farming include the development of a social system closely tied to local wisdom, along with the active participation of customary or village officials who possess and earn the trust of the community. The fundamental ways of building innovativeness of the economy are the creation and diffusion of innovation, the latter of which is the dispersal of new technological, organizational, marketing solutions as well as knowledge among imitator enterprises, and copycats (the ‘spillover effect’). Important determinants of innovation diffusion include the inflow of foreign capital (in the form of FDI) and foreign trade. Few empirical studies exist that attempt to explain the sources of innovation diffusion in the Polish economy applying quantitative tools used in contemporary statistics and econometrics. The existing research gap makes it difficult to reliably assess the actual cause-and-effect relationships between spillover processes and macroeconomic variables. This article sought to determine the nature and strength of the impact of investment specialisation (and investment attractiveness) as well as industry export specialisation on the phenomenon of penetration of innovation in the Polish processing industry. The occurrence of innovation diffusion and its dynamics were investigated using the logistic function econometric model. To study the impact of the specialisation, according to FDI located in Poland, and specialization of export on the process of innovation diffusion, dynamic models of error correction estimated for selected industrial processing industries were used. The obtained results allowed to answer the questions: in which industries has innovation diffusion occurred, in which was it the fastest, and to what extent was it the effect of investment attractiveness, and to what degree of the export specialization of the industry?

Open Data is a public information disclosure instrument based on information technology that is a solution for increasing requirement of data and public information. Jakarta Provincial Government is the first province, which has implemented it to improve user data access, as well as efficiency and effectiveness of data supply management. Since it is launched in 2015 until early 2017, only 56 out of 362 organizations in Jakarta Provincial Government are actively adding sets of data into the data portal of such program. This research aims to determine the diffusion process of innovation and the obstacles in the program. It uses qualitative descriptive method to describe the problem and explore the solution in detail. Then the results showed that the process of diffusion of program innovation prioritizes communication channels through interpersonal communication in groups or individuals. The decision-making process of innovation by SKPD/UKPD under Jakarta Provincial Government aims to take an attitude towards innovation can be outlined into several stages, namely knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation and confirmation. Further, the innovation obstacles found are some form of resistance against innovation in the form of habitual adopter factors that are difficult to change in the implementation process and distortion of messages on personal factors in the form of constraints on the use of information technology language that is difficult to understand

Abstract. Information technology (IT) innovation research examines the organizational and technological factors that determine IT adoption and diffusion, including firm size and scope, technological competency and expected benefits. We extend the literature by focusing on information requirements as a driver of IT innovation adoption and diffusion. Our framework of IT innovation diffusion incorporates three industry‐level sources of information requirements: process complexity, clock speed and supply chain complexity. We apply the framework to US manufacturing industries using aggregate data of internet‐based innovations and qualitative analysis of two industries: wood products and beverage manufacturing. Results show systematic patterns supporting the basic thesis of the information processing paradigm: higher IT innovation diffusion in industries with higher information processing requirements; the salience of downstream industry structure in the adoption of interorganizational systems; and the role of the location of information intensity in the supply chain in determining IT adoption and diffusion. Our study provides a new explanation for why certain industries were early and deep adopters of internet‐based innovations while others were not: variation in information processing requirements.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to address the gap in knowledge by exploring the role of customers and vendors in diffusion of modern equipment technologies into the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachTo address the need to consider both vendors and customers in the innovation diffusion process and the need for in-depth cross-sectional studies, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 147 participants including 85 vendors and 62 customers of modern construction technologies at company, project and operational levels in Australia and North America. Thematic analysis and an analytic hierarchy process illustrate the critical role of both customers and vendors in the diffusion process of modern equipment technologies.FindingsA new conceptual model is presented which classifies modern equipment technology customers into four categories: visionaries (group I); innovators (group II); pragmatists (group III); and conservatives (group IV) based on the way in which they interact with vendors in the innovation diffusion process. The results also reveal that there is a significant emotional/affective aspect of innovation diffusion decisions which has not been recognised in previous research.Originality/valueThe major contribution of this study is that it analyses the role of both vendors and customers in the equipment technology diffusion process at three different levels (strategic, project and operational) in large corporations and small-to-medium-sized businesses. The findings not only advance construction innovation research beyond traditional linear models of innovation, but also provide new knowledge which enable customers and vendors to interact more effectively in the diffusion of new construction equipment technologies.

SummaryThe innovation diffusion process in China has varied impacts on different players in the industrial system, which can in turn either facilitate or impede theeffects of innovation diffusion. Bringing not only growth possibilities to the newcomers but also high risks to the established players, the diffusion process might encounter with huge resistance in a highly regulated system, which is also called market failure. Based on intensive case studies in China’s communication sector, the paper argues that the structures of the innovation supply system will greatly influence the innovation diffusion process. Policy-makers must leverage policy design and intervention to achieve expected strategic objectives. Therefore, proper policy intervention could become the trigger to launch and facilitate diffusion of emerging innovations in such a large developing country as China.

Innovation and knowledge diffusion in megaprojects is one of the most complicated issues in project management. Compared with conventional projects, megaprojects typically entail large-scale investments, long construction periods, and conflicting stakeholder interests, which result in a distinctive pattern of innovation diffusion. However, traditional investigation of innovation diffusion relies on subjective feedback from experts and frequently neglects inter-organizational knowledge creation, which frequently emerges in megaprojects. Therefore, this study adopted project network theory and modeled innovation diffusion in megaprojects as intra- and inter-organizational learning processes. In addition, system dynamics and fuzzy systems were combined to interpret experts’ subject options as quantitative coefficients of the project network model. This integrated model will assist in developing an insightful understanding of the mechanisms of innovation diffusion in megaprojects. Three typical network structures, namely, a traditional megaproject procurement organization (TMO), the environ megaproject organization (EMO), and an integrated megaproject organization (IMO), were examined under six management scenarios to verify the proposed analytic paradigm. Assessment of project network productivity suggested that the projectivity of the TMO was insensitive to technical and administrative innovations, the EMO could achieve substantial improvement from technical innovations, and the IMO trended incompatibly with administrative innovations. Thus, industry practitioners and project managers can design and reform agile project coordination by using the proposed quantitative model to encourage innovation adoption and reduce productivity loss at the start of newly established collaborations.

To investigate the mechanism of employee acceptance of digital intelligence technology under technological innovation change in megaproject organisations, this study clarifies the mechanism of technological innovation diffusion in Chinese megaproject contexts. By constructing a multi-layer dynamic theoretical model of megaproject employee acceptance research, the study explores the interaction effects of multiple factors at the organisational level in the innovation diffusion process and the mechanisms of employees’ willingness to accept digital intelligence technologies. The results show that: the organisational level has a greater influence on the pre- and mid-term diffusion of innovation; the technological level gradually increases its influence on employees’ individual acceptance at the stage of innovation awareness formation; and the environmental level helps form the initial acceptance attitude. The individual level in the later stages of innovation diffusion strongly influences employees’ acceptance. The different types of megaprojects moderate the organisational model, while the interference effect of the innovation type of digital intelligence technology is not significant. The innovation of the study lies in analyzing the mechanism of innovation diffusion in the context of megaprojects along the path of innovation diffusion and exploring the interplay between organisational and individual dimensions on individual employees’ willingness to accept.

The focus of this research is the diffusion process of innovation in the Serang Regency Tourism Information System (SIMPARTA). Innovation diffusion is the process by which innovation is communicated through specific channels over time in social systems. Diffusion is needed to produce an easy approach so that people or individuals understand and use the innovations that have been carried out by the government. Serang Regency has a very large area with various natural tourism potentials, ranging from beach tourism to mountain tourism. However, tourism in Serang Regency still does not provide great interest for domestic and foreign tourists to visit. To attract domestic and foreign tourists, the Serang Regency Government made an application called SIMPARTA. SIMPARTA Serang Regency is a web-based application in the form of a tourist directory. One of the purposes of using the SIMPARTA application is as a vehicle to develop the tourism industry in Serang Regency. With this application, it is expected that domestic and foreign tourists will know various tourism and culinary places in Serang Regency, so that the number of tourist visitors in Serang Regency increases. Innovation is not only born to exist but how this innovation is understood, used and ultimately has a positive impact. For this reason, the process of diffusion of innovation is needed.

The model presented in this paper integrates two distinct components of the demand for durable goods: adoptions and replacements. The adoption of a new product is modeled as an innovation diffusion process, using price and population as exogenous variables. Adopters are expected to eventually replace their old units of the product, with a probability which depends on the age of the owned unit, and other random factors such as overload, style‐changes etc.It is shovn that the integration of adoption and replacement demand components in our model yields quality sales forecasts, not only under conditions where detailed data on replacement sales is available, but also when the forecaster's access is limited to total sales data and educated guesses on certain elements of the replacement process.

Dago Pojok is an area located on Dago Pojok Street, Coblong district, Bandung, West Java. In this area, there is a village which is full of arts both the decoration and the citizens‟ activities. Because of its unique, this village is called “Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok”. In the past, this village was one of a troubled region because of motorcycle gang existed there. In 2003, a community called Taboo Community came to Dago Pojok for making art training to its citizens. The arts are mural, painting, wall decoration, statue, photography, traditional music instruments, and traditional games. In making this paper, the data are collected by interview to the initiator of “Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok” direct observation, and studies from articles in several media. The data were analyzed by referring to the theories of innovation diffusion, social exchange, social learning, and organizational communication. “Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok” has already successfully in changing, from a troubled area became a tourism destination that still in development in Bandung. Many tourists, both domestic and foreign come to see the unique of this village, participate in arts programs and stay in citizens‟ house. These activities support the citizens to start a business and grow in economics. This paper discusses how „Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok‟ has developed by its creativity. This paper also explain Taboo community profile, the activities of Dago Pojok, Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok development, innovation diffusion process, social exchange and social learning process, community based tourism in Dago Pojok, and Dago Pojok programs. The explanation will reveal how communication between the citizens, organizers of “Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok”, and Taboo Community became a key factor that made the village people understand the importance of area developing, so Dago Pojok which was a common village became a creative village that get a lot of attention. Modeling the effects of variable external influences and demographic processes on innovation diffusion

Modeling and simulation of technological innovation diffusion of high-performance construction materials in transportation engineering

The influence of peer effects on the diffusion of innovations has been extensively studied. However, the underlying mechanisms of peer effects are generally understudied. Gaps in this knowledge could lead to misestimation of peer effects and inefficient interventions. This study examined the role of three types of specific peer effects -- information effect, experience effect, and externality effect -- in the adoption of innovation in rural China. By referring to the diffusion process of a rural innovation, we developed a simulation model that incorporated multiple peer effects on a multiplex network. The model allowed us to estimate the influence of each specific effect and to investigate the interplay of the positive and negative directions of the effects. The main results of simulated experiments were the following: (1) a negative information effect in the system caused the diffusion of innovation to vary around a middle-level rate, which resulted in a fluctuating diffusion curve rather than a commonly found S-shaped one; (2) in the case of full diffusion, experience effect significantly shaped the diffusion process at an earlier stage, while externality effect mattered more at a later stage; and (3) network properties (i.e., connectivity, transitivity, and network distance) provided indirect influence on diffusion through specific peer effects. Overall, our study illustrated the need to understand specific underlying causal mechanisms when studying peer effects. Simulation studies provide an effective approach to generate such understanding.

Thanks to smartphone penetration, one technological revolution has spawned the creation of countless mobile innovations, including mobile banking which allows users to manage their finances from their mobile device. Knowing what drives the rate of mobile banking adoption can help financial institutions target and convert non-users and improve their overall customer experience. This thesis highlights the relevance of mobile banking through the theoretical framework of Everett Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations and explores potential drivers of mobile banking adoption. Results from the survey reveal the demographic and attitudinal characteristics of mobile banking users who are at least 18 years of age and reside in the United States.
