Abstract This paper presents the central finite‐dimensionalH∞filter for nonlinear polynomial systems, which is suboptimal for a given threshold γ with respect to a modified Bolza–Meyer quadratic criterion including the attenuation control term with the opposite sign. In contrast to the previously obtained results, the paper reduces the originalH∞filtering problem to the corresponding optimalH2filtering problem, using the technique proposed in (IEEE Trans. Automat. Control1989;34:831–847). The paper presents the central suboptimalH∞filter for the general case of nonlinear polynomial systems based on the optimalH2filter given in (Int. J. Robust Nonlinear Control2006;16:287–298). The central suboptimalH∞filter is also derived in a closed finite‐dimensional form for third (and less) degree polynomial system states. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify performance of the designed central suboptimal filter for nonlinear polynomial systems against the central suboptimalH∞filter available for the corresponding linearized system. Multilayer Operability Framework for Process Design, Intensification, and Modularization of Nonlinear Energy Systems
An optimization-based multilayer operability framework is introduced for the process design of nonlinear energy systems that are challenged by complexity and highly constrained environments. In the first layer of this framework, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)-based iterative algorithm considers the minimization of the footprint and the achievement of process intensification targets. Then, in the second layer, an operability analysis is performed to incorporate into the approach key features for optimality and feasibility, accounting for the system operation with changeable input conditions. The outcome of the framework consists of a set of modular designs, considering the aspects of both size and process operability. For this study, the nonlinear system is represented by multiple linearized models, resulting in low computational expense and efficient quantification of operability regions. The developed framework is applied to a membrane reactor for direct methane aromatization conversion to hyd...
Read moreA linear approach to generalized minimum variance controller design for MIMO nonlinear systems
Designing minimum variance controllers (MVC) for nonlinear systems is confronted with many difficulties. The methods which are able to identify MIMO nonlinear systems are scarce, and linear models are not accurate in modeling nonlinear systems. In this paper, Vector ARX (VARX) models are proposed for designing MVC and generalized minimum variance controller (GMVC) for linear and nonlinear systems, and the accuracy of these models in approximating the nonlinear MIMO system is studied. However, the VARX is a linear model. It is shown that this model can identify some kinds of nonlinear systems with any desired accuracy. Therefore, the controller designed by the VARX is accurate, even for these nonlinear systems. The proposed controller is tested on a both linear system and a nonlinear four-tank benchmark process. In spite of the simplicity of designing GMVCs for the VARX models, the results show that the proposed method is accurate and implementable.

Read moreRobust Mini-Max regulator for uncertain nonlinear polynomial systems
In this paper, we present a solution to the problem of the quadratic Mini-Max regulator for polynomial uncertain systems. The main characteristic of this type of problems is that the parameters describing the dynamic of the nonlinear plant depend on a vector of unknown parameters, which belongs to a finite parametric set, and the solution is given in terms of the worst case scenario. That is to say, the result of the application of a certain control input (in terms of the cost function value) is associated with the worst or least favorable value of the unknown parameter. Based on the general necessary conditions for mini-max optimality, a closed form for the control is provided, which makes use of a p-linear form tensor representation of the polynomial system. In its turn, this allows one to present the solution in a way similar to the so called Riccati technique. The final control is shown to be a convex combination (with some weights) of the optimal controls for each fixed parameter of the polynomial system. A numerical example for the robust regulation of the well-known Duffing equation which represents a typical (and challenging to control) nonlinear polynomial system is presented, to show the effectiveness of our approach.
Read moreAnalysis of Nonlinear Discrete Time Active Control System with Boring Chatter
In this work we study the design and analysis for nonlinear discrete time active control system with boring charter. It is shown that most analysis result for continuous time nonlinear system can be extended to the discrete time case. In previous studies, a method of nonlinear Model Following Control System (MFCS) was proposed by Okubo (1985). In this study, the method of nonlinear MFCS will be extended to nonlinear discrete time system with boring charter. Nonlinear systems which are dealt in this study have the property of norm constraints ║ƒ (v (k))║≤α + β║v (k)║γ , where α≥0, β≥0, 0≤γ≤1. When 0≤γ<1. It is easy to extend the method to discrete time systems. But in the case γ = 1 discrete time systems, the proof becomes difficult. In this case, a new criterion is proposed to ensure that internal states are stable. We expect that this method will provide a useful tool in areas related to stability analysis and design for nonlinear discrete time systems as well.
Read moreZero dynamics of sampled-data models for nonlinear systems
One of the approaches to sampled-data controller design for nonlinear continuous-time systems consists of obtaining an appropriate model and then proceeding to design a controller for the model. Then, it is important to derive a good approximate sampled-data model because the exact sampled- data model for nonlinear systems is often unavailable to the controller designers. Recently, Yuz and Goodwin have proposed an accurate sampled-data model which includes extra zero dynamics, so-called the sampling zero dynamics, corresponding to the relative degree of the continuous-time nonlinear system. This paper shows that a more accurate sampled-data model is required for a controlled Van der Pol system with the relative degree two. The reason is that the closed-loop system becomes unstable when a controller design method based on cancellation of the zero dynamics is applied, and the phenomenon seems related to the instability of the sampling zero dynamics of the more accurate sampled-data model. Further, this paper derives a more accurate model than that of Yuz and Goodwin for continuous-time nonlinear systems with the relative degree two, and presents a condition which assures the stability of the sampling zero dynamics of the obtained model.

GLOBAL TANGENCY AND TRANSVERSALITY OF PERIODIC FLOWS AND CHAOS IN A PERIODICALLY FORCED, DAMPED DUFFING OSCILLATOR
This paper presents how to apply a newly developed general theory for the global transversality and tangency of flows in n-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems to a 2-D nonlinear dynamical system (i.e. a periodically forced, damped Duffing oscillator). The global tangency and transversality of the periodic and chaotic motions to the separatrix for such a nonlinear system are discussed to help us understand the complexity of chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems. This paper presents the concept that the global transversality and tangency to the separatrix are independent of the Melnikov function (or the energy increment). Chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems makes the exact energy increment quantity to be chaotic no matter if the nonlinear dynamical systems have separatrices or not. The simple zero of the Melnikov function cannot be used to simply determine the existence of chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems. Through this paper, the expectation is that, from now on, one can use the alternative aspect to look into the complexity of chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems. Therefore, in this paper, the analytical conditions for global transversality and tangency of 2-D nonlinear dynamical systems are presented. The first integral quantity increment (i.e. the energy increment) for a certain time interval is achieved for periodic flows and chaos in the 2-D nonlinear dynamical systems. Under the perturbation assumptions and convergent conditions, the Melnikov function is recovered from the first integral quantity increment. A periodically forced, damped Duffing oscillator with a separatrix is investigated as a sampled problem. The corresponding analytical conditions for the global transversality and tangency to the separatrix are obtained and verified by numerical simulations. The switching planes and the corresponding local and global mappings are defined on the separatrix. The mapping structures are developed for local and global periodic flows passing through the separatrix. The mapping structures of global chaos in the damped Duffing oscillator are also discussed. Bifurcation scenarios of the damped Duffing oscillator are presented through the traditional Poincaré mapping section and the switching planes. The first integral quantity increment (i.e. L-function) is presented to observe the periodicity of flows. In addition, the global tangency of periodic flows in such an oscillator is measured by the G-function and G(1)-function, and is verified by numerical simulations. The first integral quantity increment of periodic flows is zero for their complete periodic cycles. Numerical simulations of chaos in such a Duffing oscillator are carried out through the Poincaré mapping sections. The conservative energy distribution, G-function and L-function along the displacement of Poincaré mapping points are presented to observe the complexity of chaos. The first integral quantity increment (i.e. L-function) of chaotic flows at the Poincaré mapping points is nonzero and chaotic. The switching planes of chaos are presented on the separatrix for a better understanding of the global transversality to the separatrix. The switching point distribution on the separatrix is presented and the switching G-function on the separatrix is given to show the global transversality of chaos on the separatrix. The analytical conditions are obtained from the new theory rather than the Melnikov method. The new conditions for the global transversality and tangency are more accurate and independent of the small parameters.

This paper deals with the problem of static output feedback controller design for nonlinear polynomial systems using an iterative sums of squares (SOS) approach. The proposed nonlinear feedback control scheme is developed to provide the semi-global exponential stability of the controlled system using Lyapunov theory with polynomial functions. Finally illustrative examples are given to validate the proposed approach.
Read moreLogistic nonlinear convergence rate for subtle difference identification in seismic data
Summary Geological subtle difference identification poses great challenge to seismic interpretation. Although some effective seismic attributes (e.g. instantaneous amplitude, instantaneous phase, instantaneous frequency, coherence etc.) have been developed to map changes in seismic data, subtle changes in detail are still difficult to be distinguished by these methods. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the better attribute with far greater detail than these conventional ones. Unlike most seismic attributes based on linear theory, logistic nonlinear convergence rate attribute we proposed in this paper generated from a nonlinear system - logistic equation. Logistic equation is a famous polynomial nonlinear iterative dynamical system which is often cited as a chaos producer. However, few works pay attention to nonlinear convergence of the equation. This paper just focused on this part and discussed application of logistic nonlinear convergence. Method experiments demonstrated that logistic nonlinear convergence rate can be conducive to magnify subtle differences. And the case study in Tarim illustrated that our method did be sensitive to subtle differences between reservoirs and its geological background in seismic responses, and can well delineate the distribution of reservoirs

Nonlinear Characteristic Output Spectrum
A systematic frequency domain method for nonlinear analysis, design and estimation of nonlinear systems is established based on the discussions in the previous chapters. Firstly, this method allows accurate determination of the linear and nonlinear components in system output spectrum of a given nonlinear system described by NDE, NARX or NBO (nonlinear block-oriented) models, with some simulation or experiment data. These output spectrum components can then be used for system identification or nonlinear analysis for different purposes such as fault detection etc. Secondly, the OFRF discussed before is expressed into a much improved polynomial function, referred to here as nonlinear characteristic output spectrum (nCOS) function, which is an explicit expression for the relationship between nonlinear output spectrum and system characteristic parameters of interest including nonlinear parameters, frequency variable, and input excitation magnitude (not just nonlinear parameters as that in Chaps. 7 and 8 ) with a more generic parametric structure. With the accurate determination of system output spectrum components in the previous step, the nCOS function can therefore be accurately determined up to any high orders, with less simulation trials and computation cost compared with a pure simulation based study or traditional theoretical computation. These results can provide a useful approach for qualitative and quantitative analysis and design of nonlinear dynamics in the frequency domain.
